Reuben Barker - married Martha McCauley

"Fasten your seat belts. It's going to be a bumpy night." -- Bette Davis

I'm trying to sort out two Reuben Barkers. Presumably, they were two different people. Other than marriages to two different Martha McCauleys, we have no other info on either of them.

#1: Married Martha McCauley in 1835, Marshall County, MS. Martha was born in 1818 in Franklin County, MS and died about 1890. We have no info on children of this marriage. Her parents were Samuel McCauley (1786 NC - 1849 MS) and Rebecca Burch (1793 KY - 1860 MS).

#2: Married Martha McCauley (no marriage info, but they were probably married in Mississippi). This Martha McCauley was born in 1846 in Mississippi. No info on children of this couple. Her parents were John Samuel McCauley (1822 MS - 1866 MS) and Elizabeth Barker (1828 SC - ?).

Martha #1 was sister to John Samuel McCauley (the father of Martha #2). Therefore, Martha #1 was the aunt of Martha #2. It also makes Elizabeth Barker (mother of Martha #2) the sister-in-law of Martha #1.

John Samuel McCauley (father of Martha #2) was the son of Samuel McCauley (father of Martha #1). Therefore, Samuel was the grandfather of Martha #2.

Are we confused yet? I need a map.

I do not know if or how the 2 Reuben Barkers were related to each other OR if Elizabeth Barker was related to the 2 Reubens.

Does anyone out there know anything about these Barkers?

William Oliver Barker and Elizabeth Dollar, South Carolina

Greetings,

I'm searching for the parents and/or siblings of my ggg-grandparents: William Oliver Barker and Elizabeth Dollar, both born about 1787 in SC. They were married in 1807 in SC. Their death dates and the birth/death dates of their children would also be helpful.

There must've been others, but I only know of 2 of their children:

Reuben Barker, born 1814, SC.
In 1836, he married Martha McCauley, born 1818 in Franklin County, MS. Martha was a daughter of Samuel McCauley and Rebecca Burch.

Elizabeth Barker, born 1828, SC.
In 1840, she married John Samuel McCauley, born 1822 in Franklin County, MS. John was a son of Samuel McCauley and Rebecca Burch. Elizabeth and John's son - Samuel Franklin - was my g-grandfather. He married Mary Catherine Armsworthy in 1889, Mt. Pleasant, Titus County, TX.

Also, would anyone out there happen to know whether Elizabeth Dollar was of Native American descent?

Thanks!
Kathy

Barker family from Essex, England

Would very much like to hear from anyone who has any knowledge of a family of Barkers from (I believe) Essex, England. My father was John George Barker and born in High Ongar, Essex in 1880. He was one of nine children and I don't know if all of the siblings remained in England. My father came to Canada (year unknown). His father's name was either George Edmund Barker or Edmund George Barker and he married Jane Susannah Wood about 1878. Thank you for all replies.

Moses Barker

I am looking for the father of Moses Barker who married Sarah "Sally" Steele. He was born around 1800 and died around 1863 in Monroe County, OH. Their children were born mostly in Monroe County, OH but many moved to Brown County, IN. Moses had the following siblings: Amos, Isaiah, John, Ezra, Elias, Elisha and maybe Lovica. Moses and Sarah's children were: Jesse, Elisha, John, Benjamin, Lyda Anne, Mary, Ezra, Susanna, Noah, James, George Washington, Alvin and Sarah Ann.

My mother and grandfather did a lot of work on this family line including traveling to Monroe county, looking at records, the old homestead, baptismal records, family registers, etc. Evidently there was a fire that destroyed some records.

Based on a conversation they had with a family friend in Monroe County, we think Moses came from England around 1820 but we have no evidence. From the same source we also think that Moses' father's name was Israel. Again, this is speculated.

I would very much like to get in touch with anyone working on this branch of the Barker family. I have a lot of information about everyone descended from Moses. I'd love to get beyond Moses!!

Thanks!

Barker family from Halifax, Yorkshire then Rochdale Lancashire, UK

Are there any descendents of the Barker family out there or am I the only one left?
Benjamin (b.1808 - Halifax, UK) married Hannah Hirst and had 8 children (Mary, John, Betty, Hannah, Ben (1842), William, Joseph and Mary Jane) - all born Halifax. My gt. grandfather Ben (1842) had 2 wives - Elizabeth Lingard then Eliza Wall. From his 1st marriage there were 6 children (Hannah, Arthur, John, Wlliam, Albert & Wright) - the last two born in Rochdale. (My grandfather Percival was also born Rochdale to his 2nd wife). I was told that two of the brothers emigrated to Canada and I know that one of their decendents was called Ben Barker who lived in Regina (he visited my father 30 years ago). Considering there are so many "Barker boys" I'm surprised I can't trace any of their descendents.
If there is anyone out there I would love to hear from you.
Regards, Sarah (nee Barker)
Hi,
My great great grandaparents Zadok (Zaock) Barker - born 1844 approx in Sheen, and Emma (nee Harrison born 1845 in Hulme End) lived in Staffordshire in the last half of the 19th century and early 20th century. They had 5 children Minnie, Eliza, Sarah, Zadock and Joseph), the fourth of which (Zadock - with or without the 'c' -was my great grandfather). I have addresses for them from Stockport and Cheadle from the 1881, 1891 and 1901 census' (though Zadock snr seems to have died before 1891) Any info in this family would be much appreciated, as I live in New Zealand.

Thanks,
Emma Pooley

I am seeking any info on this person.
Resine BARKER b 21 Dec 1776 West Springfield MA to Thomas and Silee Barker.
Rezina Barker m. Caleb BRADLEY Aug 20, 1798, Suffield CT.
Flavia, d [Caleb & Rezina] BRADLEY b Dec 16 1799. (She marries Joel RICE, moves to Ashtabula County, Ohio and dies 1829, I also believe another daughter marries Fayette JOHNSON).
Berina (I believe this is a miss read for Resina) BRADLEY, of Suffield,CT m. Isaac MORLEY, of Athens, PA, Apr 19, 1826. Isaac Morley dies one month later.
Rezina MORLEY is in the 1850 census in Ashtabula County, Ohio, age 75. No doubt on the spelling, it's readable.
Berina Morley (at least that is what the very worn marker appears to read)dies in 1852 in Ashtabula County Ohio. I believe that Rezina/Resine/Berina are one and the same person. Can anyone help me connect these dots?
Thanks

The Barker's are my brick wall. My grandmother was Ethel Clara Barker (1908-1996), her father was Eugene Harrison Barker (born Rome, GA) 1861-1944 (died in AR). His father was probably Joseph George Barker born June 8, 1808 (believe to be in GA) and died 1862. His second wife was my line, I believe her to be Sarah Francis born 1833, she also died 1862. I know nothing else of this family line. If anyone can help me I would greatly appreciate it!
Please respond to my post at texasladyx3@yahoo.com.
Thank you,
Joyce

Charles Edgar Barker

I need information from anyone who might be acquainted with or related to a Charles Edgar Barker, age 59, presently of Spokane, Washington, who also lived in Kennewick, Washington. His wife to my knowledge was a Carrie, who had a daughter Carrie Ann with granddaughters Cassandra and Terra; Charles' family included a daughter Barbara Jean (Bobbie) Realing (could be Williams), a Beverly, and a son Charles Edgar Barker. He also had siblings in the Oregon and California areas.

There is a tentative urgency in my daughter Heather's life, in which she has read a recent obituary in the TriCity Herald in Kennewick, WA for a Charles Edgar Barker, 59, who passed on November 2, 2000 from heart disease and was living in Spokane, Washington. She has asked me to help her with research to determine whether she has lost her natural father.

I am posting this message to ask for help from you folks, as we need to determine whether this Charles Edgar Barker is indeed the same man. Some of the names of the family members listed in the obituary appear familiar, although last names of the females now are different from those they had when Heather was a small babe.

For the sake of my daughter, please forward any information or suggestions in research you may have; it would be very much apreciated.

Thank you,

Jen

I have a few other photos of the children as well. These photos were included in the photos of Delia Belle (Edgell) Ritter that I inherited. The Edgells and Barkers are connected by marriage at some point, but I do not know who these individuals are or what the connection is.
Barkers of southern Arkansas
I'm looking for any information on Barker families in southern Arkansas. My grandfather's mother was Bendette C. Barker (b. February 1875 d. 1942, Louisiana).
She married John Wesley Avant (b. March 23, 1870, Calhoun County, AR) circa 1892 in Arkansas and moved with the Avant family to Winn Parish, Louisiana in 1920. She is buried with her husband at Mars Hill Cemetery in Winn Parish.
I'm guessing Bendette's parents and siblings lived in the vicinity of Calhoun or Dallas County, Arkansas, but this is speculation on my part. I know nothing else about her family. Can anyone help?
I'm searching for info on parents/siblings of Elizabeth Barker, born c. 1828 in (we think) South Carolina.

In c.1840, he became the first wife of John Samuel McCauley. They were probably married in Marshall County, Mississippi.

John Samuel McCauley had 9 children that we know of, some of these might be by his 2nd wife:

James H., Samuel Franklin, Martha, John Wade, Sarah A., George, Narcissus A., William Lafette, and Benjamin. As far as we can tell, all of the children were born in Mississippi, except George, who was born in Marshall, Texas.

Presumably, Elizabeth Barker died before 1853, because John Samuel married Hyrsa Jones on May 18, 1853.

John Samuel was my great-grandfather.

Looking for Proof that Obediah Barker who married Sarah Cochrane was the son of Thomas and Martha Truax Barker

Hi,

I'm looking for any solid evidence that Obediah Barker who married Sarah Cochrane in Greene County, Indiana in 1834 was the son of Thomas Barker and Martha Truax.

I've searched the web and found many family trees listed that Obediah T. Barker who was born in 1792/3 and died 1849 in New Orleans, LA who was the son of Thomas Barker and Martha Traux and that he married Sarah Cochran and had children: John, Eliza, Elizabeth, Nancy and Tilman.

However, I through my research I think that the Obediah who married Sarah Cochran was not the Obediah who's parents were Thomas Barker and Martha Truax.

Reasons being in 1850 census record for Taylor Township, Greene County, Indiana there is an Obediah Barker born about 1793 in Kentucky married to a Mary. They have children of their own. The names and dates correspond with earilier census records (1830 & 1840).

There are two Obediah Barkers living in Greene County, Indiana in 1840. One Obediah Barker is between the ages of 40 and 50. Making him born around 1790 and 1800.

The other Obediah Barker is between the ages of 20 and 30, with 1 female between the ages of 20 and 30. With 1 son under 5 and 2 girls under 5.

In the 1850 census we find a Sarah Barker age 34. (Would have been 24 in 1840) with 5 children. 1 son named John aged 14 (would have been 4 years old in 1840) and one daughter named Eliza age 12 (would have been 2 in 1840) which makes it more likely that this family fit in with the Obediah in 1840 who was between 20 and 30.

So once again, is there any solid proof that Obediah Barker who married Sarah Cochran was the son of Thomas Barker and Martha Truax and not a grandson or some other relation?

Also does anyone know if Thomas and Martha might have had a son named John Barker?

Anyone know where the name "Tilman" comes from?

BARKER - John & Samuel (1780 - 1892)

John Barker was born in Enfield, Middlesex, England abt. 1814 but we can find no record of his life until, at the age of 49 he married for the second time. His marriage certificate tells of his marriage to Rebecca Meredith a 19 year old in Monmouthshire, S.Wales in 1863. John is described on that certificate as a Widower and it also records his father, Samuel, as a Cheesemonger (deceased). Where did he live?
John & Rebecca went on to have 7 children, Thomas John, Cecelia Rose, Alice Mary, Florence Selia, Ira James, Tamar Rebecca & Mabel Eveline. He lived the remainder of his life in Llanhilleth, Monmouthshire, initially as an iron worker but becoming associated with the railways where he seemed to progress to the status of signalman He eventually died in 1892.
We can find no trace of his birth, his early life, his first marriage, the loss of his first wife, his early occupation or what took him to S.Wales and how he met Rebecca.
With 7 children, and at least one of them had 7 children, there must be plenty of descendants some of whom may know some of the answers and be able to overcome the brickwall which I seem to have hit. I’d be grateful for any help.
Thomas William Barker

I am trying to find out what happened to my great great uncle, Thomas William Barker born in St John in the Vale Greystoke Cumberland in 1888.

His parents were Robert Barker 1857 - 1895 & Jane Milburn 1865 - 1893. Roberts parents were Robert Barker 1831 - 1888 & Margaret Stockdale 1836 - 1895.

Thomas & his sister Margaret were both orphaned in 1895 with the sudden death of their father, Margaret was adopted by John and Marjory Greenhow of Keswick in the Lake District, and it seems that Thomas went to live with his grandmother Margaret Stockdale for a couple of months until her death in April 1895.
Thomas was then sent to live at the Mullers Orphanage in Bristol. I have visited Muller House in Bristol and was given access to Thomas Williams records. There were letters from a Mr J.W. Williams of 47, Station Road, Keswick the first dated April 23rd 1895. In this first letter he told of "two young ones" who had been orphaned and how "there was naught to become of them except the workhouse" He asked if it were gods will that they be allowed to come to and be brought up at the orphanage in the way of god.

Thomas was admited to the infant department of the orphanage on 24th May 1895.
He lived at the orphanage for seven years and was sent in 1902 at the age of fourteen to become an apprentice hairdresser to a Mr William Eaton Slee?, [a believer] Clock Toilet Saloon, Main Street, Pembroke, West Wales.

I know that my grandfather William John Halsall tried to find his mothers brother for her when he worked at a Manchester newspaper and was succesfull. There was a visit before ww2 and Thomas had a daughter Dorothy.

Any help or information would be much appreciated. I intend to write about Thomas & Margaret, but would need any living relatives permission.
Mystery Woman Julia Ann Barker of Kentucky, b Sep 1837

Found living as a servant in the 1860 census of Owsley Co, KY in the Joseph Spencer family. Son, John D Spencer is living next door with a new wife--just married. This is August. In October Joseph Barker was born to Julia. I can't find either Julia or Joseph Barker until 1900 for Joseph and 1910 for Julia living with Joseph and family listed under the name of Barker. Nothing for Julia after that.

The only Julia BARKER I have found born in Kentucky at the right time is the daughter of Greenup BARKER from Campbell County, but she married Thomas DE MOSS. There is a Julia A, born 1837 married to John R HOBBS of Owsley Co, KY in 1870. They had been married a little over 2 years. They had children George, William, and Susan. John R died before 1879 and Julia A HOBBS married William P LACY. They had children Emma and James. William died in 1894. She is listed with 6 children, 5 living in 1900. This works if Susan died before 1900.

I just found a tree of someone who also has Julia Ann Barker as the 2nd wife of John R HOBBS, but nothing further on her.

Am I on the right track here? Since Julia cannot be found under BARKER in 1850, was she a BRYANT/BRIANT as other records show? If so, who was her first husband and what became of him? Did he leave her because of Joseph BARKER? Some trees show Joseph's father as being John SPENCER, son of Joseph SPENCER. Some show Joseph SPENCER. She DID name him Joseph, after all. Does anyone have any primary documents for Julia Ann that show parentage or marriages? When did she die? It's hard to believe that she cannot be traced, owing to the large number of descendants (and possible descendants) she had.

There is a William BARKER, age 26, barkeeper, with two children living in Owsley Co, KY in 1860 without a wife. I can't find him or the children in 1870. Who is he and did he die in the war? What happened to the children? Could he be the husband of Julia?

If Julia's last name is BRYANT/BRIANT is her father Moses BRIANT, 1850 Surry Co, NC? He is in Poweshiek Co, IA in 1860.

Lots of questions--lets get some dialog going!

Looking for info on this Barker family. I descend from Rebecca's parents Alexander Summers 1778-1847 and Mary Ann Vinagar 1776-1832. These Summers migrated from MD to Monongalia Co, VA (WV)around 1800.

From census, appears Benjamin Barker was married to Unknown prior to Rebecca and had several children with first wife who died before 1846.
Elizabeth Barker wife of Lyman Morrell

I am looking for information one of our ancestors. What I have uncovered to date is below. Responses may be sent to andyharner@aol.com.
Thank you,
-Andy Harner

Elizabeth Barker, b. 1861 in IL, d. after 1881 in IL? Married Lyman Morrell bef. 1881. Mother of Ralph, b. 1881, Charles Wesley, & Ollie Morrell.

I believe she appears in the 1880 census for Buckhorn Twp., Brown Co., IL in the household of Elmer Morrell. There she is listed after Lyman (Loyman), who is identified as a grandson. Lizzie is shown as a grandchild at age 19. She is listed just before Charlie, age 1 who I suspect is her son with Lyman.

Her birth state is difficult to read but could be an abbreviation for Missouri. The birth state for both her parents is listed as Indiana.
I am trying to locate information on my grandmother whom I believe to be Edith Irene Barker who lived at 149 gleadsall Road Sheffield around 1916. She gave birth to a son, Frank Brownlow on the 17th June 1916 and her name only was listed on the birth certificate and the fathers name was blank. I do know that the father was Frank Brownlow Senior. I am the grand daughter of Frank Brownlow Senior and daughter of Frank Brownlow Junior - I have only just found out that Edith Barker was in fact my grandmother and would dearly love some information on her.

I am trying to find confirmation that a Charles barker born abt 1775 in Granville, North Carolina, was the son of Ambrose barker. Also Charles had a son John born in 1811 married to susannah Byler. I can document the before and after but I cannot connect these two. I see lots of trees with his name but no documentation, sources or links to the Ambrose and John.
PLease........someone help me.
thanks you,
Linda
