Further to the above, I have now got the 1911 census, and Edward was born in 1903 in Ilford so this could well be your relative.

Hope this helps! The census is now copied onto my tree if you would like to see it.

Andrea

Hi there

I know your message was posted some time ago and you may have found the answer to your question now - this is a long shot!

My grandmother was Lily Barker, born 1891 in Ilford. I have found her family on the 1901 census. There is no Edward on the census but my aunts remember Lily having a brother called Edward and Edward is a name that has been passed down in the family along with those of Lily's other brothers. Like I said it might be a long shot but if Edward was born after the 1901 census then its difficult to get a lead on him. I am hoping to get access to the 1911 census when I have some spare cash and this might answer the question!

I am having difficulty finding the family any further back also, I have Lily's father back as far as his birth in 1855 but I cant find him before that date.

Is this any help to you and maybe you may have some info to help me?

Looking for Barkers of Yorkshire England

I am looking for any information about the siblings and parents of William Barker born about 1821 in England. His marriage registration to Sarah Nellis in 1848 says he is living in Gristhorpe in the district of Scarboro and Sarah lived on William St. William's father is listed as John Barker, Labourer. William and Sarah arrived in Canada with two sons, Abraham and Robert sometime after 1850 and before 1852. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Hello Jean.

I hope you are having some success with your search. You mentioned the city of Sheffield in your query. The Barkers of sheffield are one of the oldest families in the district as are the Burkes, Sorbys, Bamforths and Staniforths. There are a lot of local landmarks named after these families, and many of the ancestors of these families are buried in the ancient Hill Top Chapel in Attercliffe nr Sheffield. There were Barkers living in Totley hall nr Sheffield and their coat of arms is based on the Iris flower. Don't go buying these fake arms that are often sold on the internet as not everybody who has this name is entitled to the arms. There is a pub in Totley called the Fleur De Lys and the emblem is, I believe, based on the Barkers coat of arms. I don't know whether this will e helpfull or not, but best of luck.

JB

He married Laura May Ruffcorn, date unknown, and had 6 daughters, one of whom is still living. He left the family in approximately 1926 while they were living in South Dakota. Story has it he was a well known farmer, liked the drink and liked to gamble. I am wondering what ever happened to him, if he remarried, when he died... any information would be appreciated.

Stephen E and Sylvester Barker

Ok, the more I find out about these two, the more I want to know. The Brothers Barker both served in a Missouri Regiment (the 21st infantry) but Sylvester enlisted in 1861, and then was mustered out for prolonged absence. Stephen joined a different company of the same regiment, but not until March of '64. Apparently, their wives were sisters,as they had the same last name (Holt) but in the 1880 census, "Sylvester" is living with Elizabeth, His brother's wife. Is this the basis of a ripping good historical novel? Or is there a prosaic explanation for this?
Patrick Moore

There were two Barker families in this area... a Henry Barker and John & Lucy Barker. It has been suspected that they were related. I descend from Henry's family and have had my dna typed. I am looking for a male Barker descendant from John & Lucy's line to have his dna tested, which will solve an age old question of relationship. If you are interested, please contact me, R.
Hi, I'm looking for James and Susan Barker (maybe married at Sandon, Chelmsford) Their four sons were born at Long Melford before they moved to Fowlmere, near Cambridge around 1820-30's. I'ts a long shot for me as I've hit the usual 'brick wall'. The sons names were:James Bapt:25.1.1791, George Bapt:9.7.1797, Thomas Bapt:27.9.1801, and John Bapt:20.11.1803 all at Long Melford. Susan was born around 1767/1771. Thank you. Pauline (pauline.a.barker@googlemail.com)

Hi, I'm new to this. Our Barkers came from Long Melford to Fowlmere which is near to yours? We have James and Susan (married Sandon, near Chelmsford.) Their Children were born Long Melford around 1800. One son, James had Susan who married Frederick Course and they went to Australia. Susan was born approx 1834. Maybe they went because of yours?
pauline.a.barker@googlemail.com

Hullo, I'm new to Computors and I am researching our line of the Barker Family. They came to Fowlmere near Cambridge after living in Long Melford. The only clue I have is Abbess Roothing/Roding as one member was noted as being baptised there. The information I have is:James Barker and his wife, Susan (she was born about 1767/1771 and died:1850 at Fowlmere)
Their children were born at Long Melford: James bapt:25.1.1795
George bapt:9.7.1797, Thomas bapt:27.9.1801 John bapt:20.11.1803
I think that James and Susan were married at Sandon, near Chelmsford.
My husband is descended from Thomas and his second wife, Ann Baker who were married in Fowlmere 26.12.1844. I am just clutching at straws and hope you don't mind me getting in touch with you? pauline.a.barker@googlemail.com
Re: James Barker, Miami policeman

Hello.

Actually, James O. Barker was *not* found dead in a fishing boat; he was shot and killed during a family argument, on Christmas Eve 1952, in Key Largo, by his son, James Duane Barker, my father, who was arrested, charged with his father's murder, but exonerated at trial in 1953.

Re the Oakes case, where you say the fingerprint incriminated the wrong person, that was not the issue at all. Captain Barker didn't follow proper forensic procedure when lifting the fingerprint, as he and his partner, Captain Eddie Melchen, having been summoned by the Duke Of Windsor to conduct the murder investigation, had inexplicably left their fingerprint camera back in Miami.

Furthermore, when Captain Barker lifted the print, the print was actually *removed* from its source, not left "in situ," as is common forensic practice. The lifted print, therefore, could not be substantiated as having come from where Captain Barker said it came from -- in Harry Oakes's bedroom. It was later alleged at trial that Captain Barker had actually, through subterfuge, acquired the fingerprint of Alfred de Marigny and then planted it in the Oakes bedroom, an allegation that was never proven but which contributed to the dismissal of the murder charge against Aldred de Marigny.

James O Barker was never the police chief of the Miami Police Department; he was a captain who occupied the position of Chief of Detectives.

Randy Banks, if James O. Barker was your grand uncle, then you and I are related. James Otto Barker is my grandfather. My father, James Duane Barker, died in 1983.

As they say, facts are stubborn things, and I have posted here simply to correct your inaccurate statements concerning James O. Barker, the manner of his death, and his involvement in the Oakes murder case.

BARKER FAMILY FROM NORTHOWRAM, YORKSHIRE.

Hi all! I’m just wondering if anyone is researching the following BARKER family: WILLIAM born 1803, Northowram (near Halifax, Yorkshire), his wife RACHEL BARKER (nee KERSHAW) born 1806, Northowram. Their children, as far as I can tell, include GEORGE (b. 1826), THOMAS (b. 1827), JAMES (b. 1831), HANNAH (b. 1833, my g g grandmother), ALFRED (b. 1835) and KERSHAW (b. 1845), all born Northowram.

Hannah married a Thomas GILL or ICKERINGILL in 1853 in Halifax.

I’d love to hear from anyone who has connections to these families. I've hit a brick wall with them, so would be grateful for any information whatsoever.

Cheers, Nikki Stern.
Lt. Col. Edward L. Barker, United States Marines, Retired, died August 4, 2009, after a prolonged illness in Temple, Texas. He was born on December 8, 1920, in Houston, Texas. He entered service from Crockett, Texas. He was 88 years old.

Barker was a veteran of the United States Marines and served in the South Pacific in WW II. In the Korean War in 1951-1952, he served with Marine Observation Squadron Six (VMO-6) and HMR-161.

In 1941, he left Texas A&M and volunteered for service in the Royal Canadian Air Force to become an enlisted flight instructor. Following Pearl Harbor, he was commissioned in the United States Marines after returning to the United States and trained as a Naval Aviator at Pensacola, Florida.

While in Canada, he met and later married Geraldine Beatrice Frances Brown of Regina, Saskatchewan, April 17, 1943, in Regina. They are survived by two sons, Edward L. Barker, Jr, and Harold R. Barker, of Dallas, Texas.

His last billet in the Marines was as Executive Officer of H&HS Squadron, MCAF, New River, North Carolina, in 1965.

In Korea, he was awarded the Silver Star for an attempted helicopter rescue of a downed Marine pilot on the Hill 851 - Hill 520 ridgeline at Heartbreak Ridge on October 7, 1951. He was also credited with the Air Medal w/8, Distinguished Flying Cross w/1, Navy Letter of Commendation w/V, Presidential Unit Citation, American Defense Service Medal, American Campaign Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal with w/3, Victory Medal WW II, China Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, United Nations Service Medal, Korean Service Medal w/3, and Korean Presidential Unit Citation.

In 1980, after a lifetime of total silence about his career, Lt. Col. Barker consented to talk for one hour with his youngest son, Harold R. Barker, about his military career. After that one hour, he refused to talk more and until his death remained silent.

That one hour conversation later resulted in the Korean War Veterans Memorial on the Mall in Washington, D.C., and the founding of the Korean War Project on the Internet.

According to his wishes, his ashes will be released over the Pacific Ocean off California.

The story of Lt. Colonel Barker’s heroism and influence in honoring all Korean War Veterans throughout the world can be found at:

www.koreanwar.org/html/chapter_one.html
