Hi - I got an alert. The website sounds great. How's it coming? Do you need any help/info?

Check this out, by the way, for the site. Toby has a bad back, and has been seeing a doctor in NYC for a few years. It turns out that his wife is Leslie Barkin (now Leslie Bachrach), who is also the office manager. We just found out recently. I think she's the daugher of Libby Barkin (I have no idea who that is). She told Toby that her family drifted away from the rest of us because her mother was not too fond of someone on our side. She seems very nice, however.

Also, did you know that Hyde shoes are making a comeback?

Hi David,

Since my grandmother's name does not appear on either the New York or Canadian immigration records, I've decided to try and contact the head Rabbi of Latvia you mentioned. Would you mind giving me a clue as to how I find him.

I have, since last writing you, made one actual connectiion with my paternal grandfather's family - what appears to be a branch in Aiken, South Carolina. My paternal ggm had a niece that is probably the grandmother of the Aiken ladies I've contacted. Waiting for confirmation.

Although, they would be relatives, they are not ancestors so the search continues for the family Barkin. Have written to an elderly Barkin gentleman in Milwaukee - his photo bore a startling resemblance to my gm!

Hope your search is going well.

Thank you for the Riga assistance.

Sharon

She must have washed clothe sin it!

I have not done research in Salt Lake. I have done alot in teh NY Public Library, through Jewishgen.org. and personnel study.
Thank you David - the information will be useful. Somewhere in my memory bank I recall my mother mentioning that grandma was from (or lived in Riga). My uncle tells me that she was from Lepey/Leypel. She came to the US and married a cousin - Kaminoff (spelled with an 'i'). The Kaminoff family was from the Vitebsk area. My grandmother told me they washed clothes in the river - maybe it was the Dzvna.

Have you been to the Family Resource Center in Salt Lake Center? Wonder if it is worth a visit.

I appreciate your input - thanks again.

Sharon

Dear Sharon:

The name barkin or barcan or bar cohen was known in the area near vitebsk. In the book by Alex beider on jewish surnames in russia, he lists several towns in that area in which the name appeared. the name barkin was a transliterati of the original, which means "son of a cohen". My family comes from Polotsk, also in Vitebsk province. the head rabbi of latvia at present in nathan Barkan, who lives in Riga. he might be able to answer more questions for you. the name barcan also is a latvian non-jewish name in the latvian area. Please write more if you have more questions.

david barcan

You are welcome. Didn't realize there were so many different Barkins. Imagined they had all come from the same village.

Yes, definitely starting when grandparents were still alive would have been helpful. I'm enjoying the search. Good luck!

Thanks so much for your reply - I have been very busy with other things and haven'thad much time for answering e-mail. I wish that I had been more inclined to do this research when my grandfather was still alive because I'm sure that he could have supplied some key names, place names, dates, etc. Most of the guides to family research are geared to families with 6 or 7 generations in this country where records are fairly easy to come by. I would have thought that the Soviet regime would have at least kept good records of the citizens, but I have received little help from the current government in my inquiries. To answer your question, all of the siblings of my grandfather,Sidney, came to the Boston area when they emigrated - why? I don't know. The sisters married local Jewish men: the Benjaminsons and the Silvers and the families spread to New Hampshire and New York. One brother, Morris, moved to California and Sidney moved to Texas. I haven't heard of any of our branch in N.C. Thanks again for your reply - let's keep each other informed of new discoveries.
Best Regards,
Tim Barkin

Had been told that my grandmother, Mame Barkin was from Lepel/Vitebsk area but having had no luck in finding Barkins in that area, I remembered my Mother once mentioned that my grandmother had come from Riga. At the time thought she must be confused. But perhaps they went to Riga? From what i know my grandmother came to the US in 1912 - to NY. From what I know, there were already Barkins here - not sure if only NY. There are also Barkins in Aiken, South Carolina associated with the Wolf family. I have no leads yet. If any of this is part of your research, please let me know. Thanks.

It's interesting about the Latvian connection. My grandmother, Mame Barkin arrived in NY c. 1912, from I believed was Lepel (near Vitubsk). However, I have not found any Barkins from Lepel. My mother once mentioned that grandma came from Riga - perhaps the Barkins went to Riga? Do you have Barkin family in New York, or Aiken, South Carolina, where I am told they are or became, part of the Wolf family. I too am searching not only for those left behind, but those that came to the U.S. My grandmother was the daughter of Barnus, and one of three sisters, the only one to emigrate. However, there were Barkin family members already in the U.S. There is also a relationship with the Kaminoff family.

Please let me know if any of this may be part of your search. Thank you.

My grandfather,Sidney Barkin, is the key to my search. He and several of his siblings emigrated from Latvia. They all had English-sounding first names such as Morris, Lily and Rose. I know that Barkin is not a Latvian name - either Russian or it could be Belarussian like yours. I am interested in the ones that stayed behind and for whom we have no records. If you have anything helpful, I would be most grateful.

Tim Barkin

Thanks for your response to my inquiry. My grandfather, Sidney, had several brothers and sisters who emigrated with him. Like him, they all had strangely English-sounding first names. There was a sister named Rose and one named Lily and there may have been a Sara as well. Rose and Lily did live in the area you mentioned, actually, Waltham, Mass. The information that I really need is from the previous generation, most of which never left Latvia. Barkin is a Russian name so I don't know if there are very deep roots in Latvia, either. Thanks again and write if you should find anything else of interest.

Tim barkin

greetings. i am doing family research. the name barcan/barkin/barken can mean two things in hebrew: bar cohen, or child of a cohen, which would be written with a hebrew bet resh caf nun, or a thorn from the work barkahn in hebrew - bet resh koof nun. bar cohens are known to come from what is now latvia and belorus. my family came from a town named polotask in belorus. please respond if you are interested to pursue the history and possible family link.

david barcan
