Hi Gail,

I am also descended from Alexander Barclay (b. 1759 Antrim IR) and Mary Ann Martin. I have found Alexander's parents to be James Barclay and Jean Lowery of Antrim, but can't get further back than that. If you have any further info on them I would greatly appreciate it!

Many thanks!

Clay (Barclay) Spurgeon

My Barkley ancestors originated in Scotland with the name of "Barkley," attested to by baptismal, marriage, and death records. From Scotland, they moved to Northern Ireland (Ulster) in the 17th century, and from there to North America in the early-to-mid 18th century, settling in Bucks County, Pennsylvania. At the beginning of the 19th century they moved west, to central Pennsylvania and then into northern Kentucky along the Ohio River. We find no evidence that there was any change in the spelling of "Barkley" since the
16th century, but I do not recall the official name of the Scottish clan, which may well have been an earlier variant of the Barkley name.

It looks like John C Barkley was the son of James and Margaret Barkley of North Mahoning, Indiana Co PA. He moved to Baltimore and became a rather prominent coffee merchant by 1880. About 1887 he moved to Wheeling WV where he died on March 31, 1900, but was brought back to Baltimore for burial. He was a veteran of the Civil War and one of the initial organizers of the old Northminster Presbyterian Church which stood on North St in Baltimore. I'm still digging, but I wanted to clarify my original posting with my findings. I'm hoping his Civil War pension file will tell me where he is buried in Baltimore.

I'm looking for the family of John C Barkley with ties to Baltimore MD where he is interred. He was born about 1843 in PA and died on 31 Mar 1900 in Wheeling, Ohio Co WV. He married Adelaide Milliken born about 1841 and they were the parents of four children: James M Barkley, Harry W Barkley, Annie C Barkley & Bessie Lee (Barkley) Wright. Aside from residing in Baltimore MD & Wheeling WV, there are references to them also living in Dayton OH, and possibly even Brookline MA. Although his death certificate says he was buried at Baltimore MD, I have not been successful in determining where, as I would like to find a date of death for his wife. Any help would be appreciated.
I have no father for John C Barkley. My only information source was the 1880 census for District 9, Baltimore MD, which states he was born in PA, and a quip from "Genealogical and Personal History of Western Pennsylvania", John W Jordan, which states: "Adelaide [Milliken], widow of John Barkley, resides with a daughter in Dayton, Ohio." This volume was published in 1915, so John C Barkley had died prior to its publication.

way back when, i believe that the original Barkley/Barclay/DeBerkley started in Scotland. when checking through the years there was, i think i remember, a William Barkley, a brother, moved to Dublin as a merchant, someware in the early 1700's. perhaps thats what you're looking for. the Barkley's i have came into Perth Amboy, New Jersey in the beginning of 'the New World' in 1684 from Aberdeen, Scotland in 1682. the one that moved to Dublin is as follows... you might want to check from there...
"The youngest child of Robert Barclay settled in Dublin and became the head of the Dublin branch of the Barclay's of Ury.
The descent of the Dublin branch of the Ury family as gathered from the public records in Dublin -- for the family records at Bury Hill afford scant information of those descendants of John Barclay who abjured the testimonis and faith of their fathers is as follows: (the Robert Barkley, the apologist)as the father was in connection with William Penn, Quakers)

John Barclay, the fourth son and youngest child of the apologist, was born at Ury,
20 August 1687 and died at Dublin 8 April 1751 and buried Corke Steet, Dublin,
11 April 1751. He married Margaret Wilson, 26 April 1709 and they had no children. He then married Anne Strettell in Dublin on 19 March 1713. She was born in Dublin, 23 December 1694. She was buried Corke Street, Dublin 21 February 1771 and daughter of Amos Strettell of Dublin, merchant and his wife Experience.

All the children of John Barclay and of Anne Barclay, his wife were born on 6 Eustace Street, Dublin.

Source: “The Barclay’s of New York” page 67 - by R. Burnham Moffat

hope this helps... if i had more i'd pass it along but have not followed this line...

Thanks for the info. The family story is that our Barkley line went to County Antrim about 1620 from Scotland. A William Hugh Barkley returned to Ireland in the early 1900's and found a stone house still standing built by a Lowrey Barkley. Lowrey was a prevalent name among my early ancestors.

My grandfather William James Barkley was born in Rashee,County Antrim northern Ireland in 1871. He married Annie O'malley, they moved to the UK where my father Thomas Charles Barkley and his older sister also called Annie were born in Leeds, Yorkshire around the early 1900's. I am the youngest of three brothers living on the east coast of yorkshire, England and a younger sister. My father T.C.Barkley told us we had relatives in the USA and Canada. I look forward to hearing from anyone with any connections.
Bud Barkley. btbarkley@yahoo.co.uk
