Barkley/Barclay/Barcley 1920s in Lawrence and Jackson Cos., AL

I am looking for the children of Bertha Spurgeon and Samuel Arther Barclay (Barkley/Barcley). Bertha died in 1924 in Lawrence Co., AL and some of her children went to live with her brother, Andrew Wann Spurgeon and his wife Ethel Louise Berry Spurgeon. Uncle Wann adopted at least one of the children-Howard who was born in 1923. My father told me that some of the girls also went to live with Uncle Wann. Some of the children were old enough to have been on their own when their mother died.

Sam died in 1949 and is buried in Scottsboro, Jackson Co., AL.

Children found in the 1910 and 1920 census were Clarence, born in c. 1905-1907; Bradford, born c. 1909; Katherine, born c. 1914; and Elsie born c. 1916. There is also a Ray that one of my cousins has listed, but we are not sure if he is another of the children or was born after 1920.

In 1930 Howard is found living in the household of Uncle Wann and it is notated that he was adopted. His last name is given as Spurgeon. I cannot find any of the other children in 1930 nor can I find Sam Barclay, so I am assuming that they were missed.

Does any have any info on this family? My livjng aunts don't know or don't remember very much about the family.

Thank you

Mona Spurgeon Herrin

Barkleys from Ireland in 1844

I have a pretty good tree of the descendants of John and Mary Barkley who imigrated to the United States on the Thomas P. Cope from Liverpool England. They started their journey from County Antrim, Ireland and landed in Philadelphia on 31 May 1844. They are now buried in Sullivan Co., MO in the Thomas Union Cemetery and I am descended from their son Samuel. Dau. Margaret married Nathaniel Jerome Webb. Besides Margaret and Samuel they had James, John m. Rebeca Owens, William m. Mariah Webb, Lowrey m. Elizabeth Class or Closs, Alexander m. Maie? Webster (dexcended from Noah Webster), Mary m. Edward Strophell or Shafbell and died May 13, 1910 in Los Angeles, CA and Matilda who died at one year old and is buried with them in MO. I'm interested in John and Mary's siblings and/or descendants. I will be happy to share my branch of the family tree with any of my relatives.

Manchester Motor, Dickinson County, Kansas, May 23, 1929, page 1:
McCready -- Barkley
A very pretty wedding took place at the country home of Mr. and Mrs. Frank McCready, southwest of Longford, at high noon, Saturday, May 18th, when their daughter, Reva, was united in marriage with Mr. Marion Crawford Barkley, of Wichita.
The ceremony was performed by Rev. Little Miss Geraldine Cherry, niece of the bride, was flower girl and Master Frankie McCready, a nephew, was the ring bearer.
The bride's dress was of white flat crepe and she carried a bouquet of pink and white roses, which was in accord with the decorations in the home.
Mrs. Barkley is a graduate of the Minneapolis high school and has taught several very successful terms of school at Bennington and Vine. By her cheerful disposition and charming personality she has made a host of friends, and will be very greatly missed in the Longford Sunday School, where she was a teacher in the Elementary department.
Mr. Barkley, also, is a graduate of the Minneapolis high school, attended K.S.A.C. and now holds the position of Inspector of material for the State Highway Commission.
The wedding was followed by a sumptous dinner.
Besides the immediate members of the family, those in attendance were Mrs. Ada Barkley and daughters, the Misses Marguerite and Mary, of Manhattan, mother and sisters of the bridegroom; Mr. and Mrs. Jas. Adee and two children, of Topeka; Mr. and Mrs. L. Kinion and Mr. and Mrs. Jas. Cherry and two children of Bennington; Mr. and Mrs. John McCready and two children, of Vine; Miss Pearl Heigele and Rev. and Mrs. G.W. Weidemier, of Longford.
Mr. and Mrs. Barkley left on Sunday for Wichita where they will be at home to their friends at 530 West Central Avenue.

I believe Catherine's mother, Margaret, lived with them. I am specifically looking for information on Catherine Arnold's parents. George is listed as being born in Ohio, though Catherine and her mother were born in VA. Any suggestions would be most appreciated!
Lena Rebecca Barkley

Hi :-

I am revising my query that has been posted here previously.

I continue to look for Lena (Laney) Rebecca BARKLEY. BUT I now believe her birth date should be 15 Jan 1825.
This is the date given in the 1901 census.
Therefore is she the daughter of Jacob Barkley & Catherine Strader??
I find that this Lena Rebecca is often given as b 15 Jan 1828 and baptized 17 Feb 1828. Could the 5 be read as an 8??
Now unless some one can tell me who Lena Rebecca daughter of Jacob & Catherine married --I would like to start assuming that she might be the one my Joseph S. AULT. m 5 Jan 1847. Witnesses to this marriage were Philip Ault (Joseph's brother) & Isaac Mills. Two of the sisters of Lena Rebecca Barkley dau of Jacob & Catherine Strader were married to Mills men.

The death registration for Lena Rebecca Barkley m Joseph S. Ault says she was 82 years old when she died in 1908==born 1826.

On her cemetery stone it says born 16 Aug 1826 BUT then the 1901 census says born 15 Jan 1825.

Confusing yes!! Frustrating --yes!!

Thanks
Patsy

I have recently acquired digital copies of the civil war era letters in the collection of Barkley Family Papers at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. They are mainly to and from members of the Josiah and Elizabeth Barkley family of Anderson Co., SC, but there are some extended family and friends included. Josiah's brother William Barkley of Cherokee Co., AL writes one letter with some great genealogical info on his kid's kids. Sons of Josiah's - J. B. O. "Neal", Martin, George, and Eliab were all in the Civil War and write home. Others writing or getting letters include: Jasper King, William Graynham or Traynham, Hugh Young Spence, Reuben Wilson, Daniel Dendy or Deney, A. Campbell, William Turner, J. M. Watson, William Willis Slatten, and Nancy Richardson. Countless others are mentioned. I have posted these letters to a page to share with anyone who has not seen them: http://www.seekyetruth.com/BarkleyLetters.html

I would love to correspond with any relatives. And please, if you know the identity of some of the non-Barkleys, please share with me and others. Also, if I have mis-transcribed something, please let me know. Some of those names are hard to read. Thanks!

Donna Spence

Hello - Haven't posted since 2/29/2000 and have found some information. The family name is BARTLEY but I was raised as BARKLEY. I'm looking for information on:

Nancy Bartley - my gggrandmother

Elizabeth S. Bartley - my ggrandmother b 1859 d 2/22/1936 and is buried in the old section of North Cemetery in Butler.

John Wlibur Bartley - my granfather b 2/20/1888 d 12/21/1958 and is buried in Greenlawn Burial Estates outside of Butler.

Esther Marie Bartley - probably sister to John. All I have is a copy of a Public School certificate of graduation from May 1914.

They lived at 801 North McKean Street in Butler - a few blocks down from the city library. It has been an empty lot for many years.

Thank you!!

Barkley genealogy from George or William born in Connecticut

I've traced the family line from Bergen and Hartford county Connecticut where George (b 1865) and William (b 1877) (brothers) were born and lived. Their father, George Barkley as born in Pennsylvania (abt 1835). Their mother, Magdalen, was born in Wurtemburg Germany (abt 1840). They also had another brother John (b 1866) and a sister Magdelena (Lena, b 1869). Their grandfather, also George Barkley (born abt 1810) was married to Hester, both from Ireland. Children were Sarah, George, Hester, Francis, and Robert according to 1850 census in Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, North Mulberry Ward. Any assistance with information prior to 1850 would be appreciated. Thanks.
Barkley Westmoreland County, Pa.

My great grandmother was Alice Catherine Barkley, she married Emory Edgar Faight. Alice's parents were William and Isabella Isabelle? McCullough, Barkley. Alice had one sister, Anna. I don't know if she had any other siblings. I found them on the 1870 St. Clair Township, Westmoreland county Census, Alice was 3, Anna 1. I have a picture of Alice and Anna together. William, 27 and Isabella 24. William served in the Civil War, Company H, 54th Pa, Infantry. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

BARKLEYS & HOLTS - TN/MS/MO - Jowel? -

Below is information I have on this line - I'm trying to fill in some blanks - how and who and when the Barkleys and Holts, Dulins, Piggs and other local Wayne County families are connected to my Missouri Barkleys. I've traced my line (for sure) back to William M. Barkley of Wayne County; born 1827 in Wayne Co, died 1898 in Winona MO. His parents may have been John Locke Barkley and Elizabeth Bostic. Can't find anything about her except born in Alabama. John Locke may have been son of Samueal Anderson Barkley and Mary Locke, but have found lots of conflicting information about that. Any help appreciated.

Generation No. 1

1. JOWEL L.1 BARKLEY1 was born 1796 in NC, and died Aft. 02 Nov 1850 in Wayne Co TN. He married JANE UNKNOWN. Benjamin 24, William 23, Milly 20 and Elizabeth 14. This Elizabeth is probably the "Betsy", age 22, who lived with John & Dicy in the 1860 census. It is not known if these are also children of John L. Barkley. John's son William I. named one of his sons "Anderson Barkley" which was a Barkley family name, which would also support the probability that John was the son of John L.

Listed on Census: 02 Nov 1850, Dist 9 Wayne Co TN
Listed on Census: 28 Jun 1860, Dist 9 Cravens Mills Wayne Co TN
Listed on Census: 04 Aug 1870, Dist 11 Waynesboro Wayne Co TN

Children of JOHN BARKLEY and DICEY HOLT are:
i. Having obtained his information, he again entered the water for his return, but before his goal was reached, he was seized with cramps and drowned.

Source: http://www.army.mil/cmh-pg/moh1.htm

BURIAL INFORMATION

Location: San Antonio, Texas
Cemetery: San Antonio National Cemetery

Born: 1899 Laredo, TX

Died: 1918

Source, additional information and cemetery monument photo:

http://www.homeofheroes.com/gravesites/states/pages_af/barke...

Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_B._Barkley

Note: This is not my ancestry.
BARKLEY, JOHN LEWIS; Congressional Medal of Honor Recipient WW i

BARKLEY, JOHN L.

Rank and organization: Private First Class, U.S. Army, Company K, 4th Infantry, 3d Division. Place and date: Near Cunel, France, 7 October 1918. Entered service at: Blairstown, Mo. Born: 28 August 1895 Blairstown, Mo. G.O. No.: 44, W.D., 1919. Citation: Pfc. Barkley, who was stationed in an observation post half a kilometer from the German line, on his own initiative repaired a captured enemy machinegun and mounted it in a disabled French tank near his post. Shortly afterward, when the enemy launched a counterattack against our forces, Pfc. Barkley got into the tank, waited under the hostile barrage until the enemy line was abreast of him and then opened fire, completely breaking up the counterattack and killing and wounding a large number of the enemy. Five minutes later an enemy 77-millimeter gun opened fire on the tank pointblank. One shell struck the drive wheel of the tank, but this soldier nevertheless remained in the tank and after the barrage ceased broke up a second enemy counterattack, thereby enabling our forces to gain and hold Hill 25.

Source: http://www.army.mil/cmh-pg/moh1.htm

BURIAL INFORMATION

Location: Kansas City, Missouri

Cemetery: Forest Hills Cemetery

Born: 1895 Missouri

Died: 1966

Additional Information and cemetery monument photo:

http://www.homeofheroes.com/gravesites/states/pages_af/barkl...

Note: This is not my ancestry.

Hello Barkleys et al:
I am trying to research my family tree and any facts/clues would be very much appreciated. Elza and Alice were my great grandparents, they lived not far from Chesterville, Ontario, closer to Dunbar. I believe their parents were Isaiah Barkley b. 1847 married 1867 to Edith McIntosh b. 1849, then maybe Andrew Barkley b. 1809 married 1834 to Magdalena (Lena or Lanny) Beckstead b. 1815, and one stretch further with Peter Barkley b. 1760 married 1789 to Delia ? b. 1757. The above took place in Williamsburg, with the exception of Peter Barkley's birth and marriage which took place in Albany, New York.
A lot of this information came from my grandmother and a lot from the net. I would love to hear from anyone who could confirm my findings or set me straight.
Thanks,
Donna

Need help in my search. My g-g-grandfather was Albert Thomas Barkley (6/14/1832-12/17/1904) he served in CSA 4th Florida Regiment - Company "I". He lived most of his life in Washington County Fla. and maybe Jackson County Florida. The story I heard from my grandfather was that Albert moved to Florida from either NC or KY as a young man and was married. The rest of the family
moved back (including his wife), but Albert stayed. In 1875 at age 43 he remarried to a much younger woman (Sarah L. Goodman who was originally from Alabama). They had one son James Henry Barkley (my g-grandfather).

I've never been able to make a connection back to NC or KY Barkley's. Any
help would be greatly appreciated.

Mary BARKLEY, George GORE, Robert TILFORD, Cyrill Joseph CAMPBELL

Looking for parents, siblings, and ancestors of Mary BARKLEY:
According to her death and burial records she was born December 15, 1854 in Detroit, Wayne County, Michigan. The oldest record I’ve found for her is the 1870 U.S. Census, City of Detroit; the household includes Robert TILFORD, age 58, born Scotland; Elizabeth TILFORD, age 46, born New York; Mary BARKLEY, age 15, born Michigan; and John BARKLEY, age 13, born Michigan. I suspect that Elizabeth TILFORD is the mother of Mary and John BARKLEY. Mary BARKLEY married first George GORE, 3 July 1872 in Detroit, Wayne County Michigan; witnesses Robert and Elizabeth TILFORD. George GORE was born ca. 1834 in New York. I have no record of how this marriage ended. Mary BARKLEY married second Cyrill Joseph CAMPBELL, 10 July 1878. She died 27 June 1923 in Detroit.
Any help appreciated—will share what information I have.

Gail Campbell Schulte
Barkley's

Actually no, none of the names except Samuel and I'm sure there are a million of them, too. My g/granddad, J.M. was married to Martha McClure, she was from Springplace, GA. But I believe that all of them are related in some way. For some reason the Barkley's weren't big talkers and it was always hard to get anything out of them. There was a family bible that had all the genealogy of our line in it but I was told that in 1932 (long before I was even born) there was a terrible tornado and the house blew away and the bible went with it. It would really be interesting if we could try and match up all of the Barkely's and see just where we all fit in with one another.

I'm very happy that you've pretty much figured it out so keep it up and hopefully it will all be fruitful.
Nedra

J. M. Barkley, 1840 Cherokee Co., Alabama

Can anyone tell me the full name of J. M. Barkley, listed on the 1840 Cherokee Co., AL census? I believe he may be the father of my Jasper Barkley. In 1840 he is listed as between 20 and 30 years of age. By 1850, he is gone and wife Ziltha is there with the kids. This is not Josiah M. Barkley, brother of William. Well, he might be a Josiah, but he is not THE Josiah that is the recipient of that letter sent by brother William on the Tennessee site that is mentioned here from time to time.

If anyone can tell me anything about this J.M., or James D. Barkley, who I suspect may be his father, I would really appreciate it. Actually, any info on the Barkleys in Cherokee Co., AL and previously of Pendleton (Anderson), South Carolina, would be of interest as I KNOW I am related to this bunch: I just can't figure out exactly where. Thank you!!

PUZZLER: John W. Barkley in Joplin, Jasper County, Missouri

I am trying to connect John W. to his roots and know nothing of his origins. He was the first husband of my great-grandaunt, Marian Tealie Underwood. They married in Joplin, Jasper County, Missouri, in December 1880 or 1881 (there is a slight discrepancy between two records which I am currently unraveling), and then he died in Socorro, New Mexico, in 1884, leaving a widow and child in Joplin. His remains were transported to Illinois for burial. His widow remarried a few years later; she and the boy moved to Sioux City, Iowa, with the new husband.

I did a search on Socorro County, New Mexico, and came up with a Barkley family living in 1870 on the census; that same family is living in Jackson County, Missouri, in 1880. John's obit says he went to Socorro "in company with a brother" for his health, so it could be this Orlando G. Barkley family living upstate since Orlando's wife was born in Illinois.

I did find a John W. Barkley biography in Gentry County, Missouri, on this board, but a different wife who died much later, so I don't know that it's him.

I hope someone will be able to restore this dear young man to his family!

Thanks,
Christy

Trying to locate the old Barkley correspondence, Alabama to South Carolina, 1800's

I have seen the letter referenced on the Tennessee site under Alabama - Cherokee Co. - letters. I do believe I am related to these Barkleys, but I am having a hard time figuring out exactly how. A while back a Robby Barkley wrote me telling me that he had this letter and others in his collection and that he did recall my Jasper Barkley mentioned. He was going on a trip and would email me upon his return. I have never heard from him again, although I have emailed again a few times. I have seen other posts of his to other queries. The author shows to be Mary Barkley, but he signs his posts Robby Barkley. Does anyone have transcriptions of any of these letters? Besides the one on the Tennesee website, I mean. I just know the secret to my link to this family is there. Has anyone else corresponded with Robby about these or about the family connections?

I have recently come to the conclusion that J. M. Barkley may be the father of my Jasper. This J. M. would have been born between 1810 and 1820, but was dead by the 1850 census in Cherokee Co., Alabama. His wife is Ziltha, I believe, or at least that is what it looks like in the 1850 census, but he is no longer there. I can only assume he was born in SC, maybe in the Pendleton/Anderson Co. area, as were all the others, but I have no proof and don't know his name, other than the initials. This would NOT be the Josiah M. who was still in Anderson Co., SC in 1849. So little to go on. I just KNOW someone out there has that tidbit of information that will help me find my connections. Please write!! Thank you!!

Jasper Barkley 1800's Alabama ? Kentucky ?

For some time I have been searching for info on the parents of my orphaned great-grandfather Willie Jasper Spence, but had only a surname of Barkley. I now have more info and would LOVE to hear from anyone who has a link or any possible leads to this family.

I have spoken to an elderly Barkley cousin who remembers Will's parents to be John Spence and Pearl Barkley (daughter of Oscar Barkley and Minnie Ferguson). Oscar is the son of Jasper Barkley and Mary or Martha ? My Will was born in Alabama in 1885, and then later orphaned, so I'm looking for Pearl Barkley, her father Oscar Barkley, and grandfather Jasper Barkley, some time in the 1800's, for a time in Alabama, but possibly from Kentucky originally.

It seems to me I've received correspondence from someone in the past on a Jasper Barkley, but at the time, I didn't have the name and couldn't find the connection, but now I can't locate that correspondence. PLEASE let me hear from anyone with any possible leads or connections. Thanks so much!

I posted this on a different board than I have before, but it looks as if it goes to several boards, so if it reaches a board where this is a duplicate post, I apologize.

Donna Spence
Barkley, Martin, Wayne Co Tennessee

I am searching this line of Barkleys in Cypress Inn area of Wayne County TN. I have the following:

1. William A? Barkley b 1830 Cypress Inn Wayne Co TN
m. Hannah Martin b. Unk Cypress Inn Wayne Co TN, dau. of Henry Martin and Nancy Hayes, both born in Wayne Co TN.

2. John William Barkley b. 10 Feb 1867 Cypress Inn Wayne Co TN; d 3 Nov 1900 Winona Shannon Co MO; m. Nora E. Harder, b 11 Jun 1874 Winona Shannon Co MO, dau of Judge Thomas A Harder and Louisa Rucker.

Family tradition is that William A (Bill) Barkley came to Missouri in the 1850s. His friend or relative, Loss Cooper, was with him, and others, and they all settled in Shannon County Missouri.

In later years some descendants visited Cypress Inn and met cousins, Alan and Jimmie Barkley and an older woman (I believe Alan's wife) who has since died. The story they told is that when Bill left TN they never heard from him again.

I would like to know who Bill's parents/siblings were, anything at all.
