The Barksdales of Albemarle County were the descendents of William the Conqueror and the royal families of Europe through the marriage of their ancestor Nathaniel to Dorothy Wodhull. The descendents of Nelson’s half brother Jonathan Barksdale and his son Nathan Barksdale have a triple shot of royal blood, through their marriage of the Roger girls.

Nelson Barksdale, was the Proctor of Central College which became the University of VA. He was extremely wealthy, and powerful, all of the land which Central College sat upon he either owned or was under his control. He was a known associate of Thomas Jefferson. He owned the Plantation, Brook Hill. He was a very large slave holder, and large property owner, tobacco plantations. He was the son of William Barksdale, and William's second wife. He also owned the Eagle's Nest travern at one time. He was considered the family banker.

Frank Barksdale was the father of Joe Barksdale who married Mary Swanson of Murray County. Yes, Frank died in 1925 in Texas. His father was named Ralph Barksdale, born in VA, lived in Bradley County, TN, and died in Whitfield County, GA. All of the people you listed below have passed away to include Locke. Ezert was my grandfather. His son JE, Joseph Ezert Barksdale Jr., is alive and well living south of Atlanta. His daughter Ruth, is alive and is living in Nashville, TN. His other sons, Billy and Mike, are alive and well living in Alabama. Another one of his daughters, Mary is living in Homewood, AL, and my mother, Margo, is living in Sylacauga, AL. Malcolm Jr. is living in NE GA, and some of the time in FL. Locke I believe had three children, maybe more. I know two of them are alive and well living in GA. There is a reunion (Swansons/Barksdale) every year in Chatsworth, labor day weekend, at Fort Mountain. There are not many left. I have a family chart, it does not have all the information that you are looking for but it does trace the family back to William I via Dorothy Wodhull, and Rogers.

Hezekiah Barksdale married Amyrillus, (Ammorilous on her tombstone), in 1882. She was Hezekiah's second wife. She was born July 6, 1842 and died July 29, 1884. They had two children. D.A. Barksdale born August 2, 1882 and died March 23, 1885. The other child was born and died in 1883. I'm not sure if the child died in child birth or shortly after. I can't find a name or sex of the child. I have that Hezekiah married Louisa (Eliza) May in 1885. I'm not sure of the marriage date either. Their first born child was John Collier,my great grandfather, who was born July 15, 1885. I hope this information helps. It's all I have for now.

My great great grandfather was Hezekiah Barksdale. I cannot find his 2nd marriage date to Ammorilous Morgan. Do you know it? I have conflicting info on the death dates of Ammorilous and her child. (I only know of one child- b. 21 Aug 1882/3 d. 23 March 1885) Do you know birth and death dates for another child? My gggrandmother was Eliza May. She and Hezekiah were married 31 Aug 1884 and I have Ammorilous dying 29 July 1884(that means he married Eliza 1 month after 2nd wife's death?) Any info would be most appreciated!

I have that William Barksdale married to Nancy Long does have a son named Andrew Jackson Barksdale. William's parents were Jeffrey Barksdale and Phoebe Brantley. As far as I know, no one has discovered any records to prove who Jeffrey's father is but most people assume Collier Barksdale.

I believe you are looking for John Collier Barksdale. He married Edna Mae Scooley 22 Nov 1908 in Hopewell, Arkansas. His date of birth is 15 July 1885 and death date is 11 Aug 1964. He was a farmer. They called him Dee. His father was Hezkiah Tiggs Barksdale (5 Mar 1836- 10 Aug 1901)and his mother was Eliza Louisa May (21 Apr 1860 - 7 Sep 1932). Hezekiah died when John Collier was only 16 years old. Eliza Louisa May was his third wife. He married her in May of 1885. His first wife was Roberta Hatley. They had 3 children. His second wife was Armyrillus Morgan. They had 2 children, one of which died at 2 days old and the other which died at the age of 2 1/2 years old. Then he married Eliza Louisa May and had 7 children with her. I have more info if you need it.

Nelson Lewis Barksdale was my great, great grandfather. He was the first procter at the Univ. of Virginia working directly with Thomas Jefferson. He was in charge of hiring workman and acquiring material for the construction in 1819. His date of birth was about 1790. His employment started in 1818 when he was elected by the board of governors at the then new Univ. of Va. On the board were two former American Presidents, Jefferson and Madison.

His son,my great grandfather, Orlando Barksdale was born in 1821,my grandfather John Thomas Austin Barksdale was born in 1849 and father,Nelson L. Barksdale, the last of a family of 9 was born in 1903.

Debbie - It's been a while since researching. I am currently trying to get a copy of a portriat of Dudley and Sally from another Dudley sibling line, Thomas (b1870).

The trail does get pretty cold pre- Dudley.

Was your William born in 1855-6? The 1860 census show him as William Hood 5 yrs old?

This is pretty much the information that I have already thus far about NAT. G. BARSDALE of Panola County, Texas and possible ATLAS M. GRANT Family connections:

There is a postmaster listing in Texas that has his name spelled as Nathan G. Barksdale.

I believe he was probably a son of Nathan Barksdale & Elizabeth Rodgers. (They had at least 7? children: Jenny, Ralph, Jonathan C., Parmenas C., Mary C., Lucy Ann, & Nathan George.)

And he may have been 3rd cousins of HARRISON BARKESDALE (who was perhaps a son of William Barksdale & Nancy Lester of Halifax, VA. then family removed to Smyrna, Rutherford,,TN.

In 1840 census a HARRISON BARKESDALE was living in Holmes, MS. near WILLIAM GRANT. This William Grant was b. abt 1805 in Montgomery, TN.

And Nat. G. Barsdale might have been 3rd cousins once removed of THOM. W. BARKSDALE of Montgomery, TN. (was this Thomas a son of Dr. John BARKSDALE & Hannah Cary WATKINS of Halifax, VA.?)

Nathan G. Barsdale married Eliza Barber in 1848, Panola, Texas

Does anyone have anykind of info about these families?

I am related to ATLAS MATTHIAS GRANT, who is listed in NAT. G. BARSDALE [BARKSDALE] household of the 1860 census.

I am trying to figure out who ATLAS M. GRANT's grand-parents were.

His father and mother were MATTHEW GRANT & CAROLINE BULLARD.

Matthew Grant was born in Virginia, moved west through the American frontier, had son "Atlas M. " near Lookout Mountain, TN. in Dec 1839, had at least 7 children, and then a final move to PANOLA, TEXAS cir 1845-1855.

Daughters,Frances(1896),Carrie(1889) and Chloe (1891)Adkins.Frances married a Richard Ashby in Dearborn co.,In.
Do these names ring any bells?I am searching Richard Ashby and his wife/wives?I need info for Frances...are we connected?
Any help would be appreciated.

I would like to find any information on Higuson Barksdale. He is listed on the 1850 Federal Census as follows:

Higuson Borkdale 40 (From Georgia, b. 1810)
Sally Barksdale (also called Sarah) 40 (From South Carolina, b. 1810)
Susan 14
Marion 12
Ann 11
Houstan 8
Almeda 5
James 2 (James may also be called Isam)

I am descended from his son Charley Greek born abt. 1852. Higuson is not listed with the family on the 1860 census so he appears to have died bet. 1852-60.

While the 1850 census lists his birthplace as Georgia, his sons later list it as South Carolina. Higuson may be misspelled and it could be a variation; such as Higgason or Hickerson. I would like to find out who Higuson's parents were and where he was from.

Senator Samuel Taliaferro Rayburn is my 2nd Cousin 2 Times Removed. I descend from Lucinda Amos's sister Temperance Amos. I know there is an Adkins/Atkins connection via some pictures in an old album I inherited. I will have to pull the album to review as I have quite a few Adkins/Atkins in my database already to find which one immediately.

I have even more Taliaferro's as they are collateral kin. I don't have the Samuel Taliaferro you list as husband of the aunt though to connect to those I already have.

my father name was William Barksdale I know very little about him for he died in the 1950s,he married Gladys Edmond daughter of Rev. Earl Edmond of Blue Rock Holiness Church I remember hearing that he had brothers named Uncles Cass, Gene, Harvey and Pat. Jeffrey Barksdale Hancock Co, GA

I am trying to find descendants of Jeffrey Barksdale who died in Hancock Co, GA in 1832. My ancestor is Hannah Barksdale Long Jones, his daughter. I am trying to find record proof that she is Jeffrey's daughter. I would appreciate any records anyone has that would establish any of his children since I have a lot of circumstantial proof linking Jeffrey with William, Hannah, John, Daniel and Elizabeth (married Hill and moved to TX). Other daughters were Mary (married McKindley) and Caroline (married Underwood)and possibly, Sarah who married Micajah Pickard.

I realize this is a way older post, but I am finally finding my link to Dudley Barksdale, reason being that I couldn't trace consistently, since he was not married to Sally Hood. Their son William Henry Barksdale, is my gg grandfather. And I have not much info or pictures, the indian part of Sally Hood's ancestry would explain alot. I would love to see a picture of the portrait of her. If anyone else is related to this line please let me know.

Vincent B LOWE was the child of Thomas and Sarah LOWE of Georgia. Sarah was a Barksdale. When Thomas died, abt 1800, Stith Barksdale and Sally Low were temporary administrators. In 1806, Vincent, orphan of Thomas Low, choosed Stith Barksdale guardian. Does anyone have this Stith Barksdale in their records? I want to know how he is related to Sarah and any other information about him. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Hi, Kelly. Frank Barksdale can be found in Texas, McLennan, Co.. He died 1925 there. One of his children, Willie (Wm., Bill) Barksdale m. willie Mae Hilliard. These are my wife's g. parents. I THINK Frank was b. 1840 Tn. and Wilie in Ga. Frank m. twice. The 2nd was Martha Randolph. Family history has it that the Randolphs raised Elson and Willie but I am not convinced at this point in time. Bob Taylor. re: Franklin, Frank Barksdale.
