On the 1930 Census for Bakersfield, CA, Stella, Dan & Everett Barksdale are listed with their Mother Jessie and Stepfather Lewis Miller.....I am related to the Lewis Miller. Trying to determine if Lewis and Jessie had children of their own; Lewis' cause of death.

Also, family sources stated Lewis and Jessie helped raise Lewis' sister child - Floyd Green. Trying to determine if Floyd ever married and when he died (thought to have died during WWII).

Any help would greatly appreciated.

Debbie Horine
dlhorine@att.net

I did find the below posted on Rootsweb posted by Jacqueline Bower posted 24 Oct 1998, I hope this helps.

This is a partial letter written by James Monroe Hill in his later years, dictated to his daughter, Lucy Hill. THe first part of the letter is missing, therefore I do not know precisely to whom it was written except by the context below, nor the exact date. It appears it was written to a cousin, one of the children of his Uncle Allen Hill. The two pages of the letter that survive offer some genealogical
information. The letter begins on page 2:
"...altar. Indeed it is frequently said by others, there isn't a more lovable old lady in Austin. She says that I am a better old man than I was when she married me. She desires to send you my photo, taken in August last. The health of both of us, considering our advanced age, is
remarkably good, with the exception of my having had pneumonia in the early part of this year which left me quite feeble, and also weakened the optic nerves to the extent tht I am now unable to see but very little, and therefore can not have the pleasure and satisfaction it
would give me to write to you with my own hand. I have two living sisters and two brothers. My youngest brother,
John C. C. Hill, now living in Monterey, Mexico, was captured at the Battle of Mier when a boy of 14 years of age, and has spent most of his life in the Republic of Mexico. His only daughter, Mrs. Dawe, a widow, has been living in Austin the past three years with her two young
daughters who are attending school here as they desired to be educated in the English language. I mention this as they are making their home with us, we having turned over to them the spare rooms we had, in which they do light housekeeping. So you know our entire household.

Grandfather's name was Isaac Hill, but I can not recall Grandmother's given name. They had nine sons, I think, three daughters. I cannot distinctly remember the names of the latter. Their sons names were; Benjamin, Isaac, Harry, John, Allen, Asa, Larry, Whitmel, and one more.

Grandfather lived in the little town of Hillsboro, Ga, which place was named for him, but earlier than I am able to remember he removed from Ga. to Tennessee and settled in the Cumberland Mountains, taking Uncle Benjamin and others of his family with him. I can recall when Uncle Ben would return sometimes with two of his brothers from Tennessee
to Georgia with large droves of hogs and slaughter them at my father's home place three miles from Hillsboro. Uncle John, (Benj. Harvey's father), then lived one and a half miles from Hillsboro where Ben and I attended the same Academy together and were chums.

My father's name was Asa, and my mother's, before her marriage was Elizabeth Barksdale.

I do not remember ever having seen my Uncle Allen Hill, your father, but know of him well, and of his fame as a Baptist minister. I was surprised to learn that your mother was a sister of Aunt Sally, Cousin Ben Hill's mother, who was an intimate friend and associate of my mother. I have a copy of an old picture of her given me by her son, Isaac Lafayette Hill some years before his death, which I prize highly. You ask the names of Benj. Harvey's parents. His father's name was John Hill and he married Miss Sarah Parham.
Since you may possible not have a copy of the "Life, Speeches and Writings" of Senator Benj. H.Hill of Ga., written and compiled by his son, Benj. H. Hill, Jr., I will insert in this some copies extracts from the opening chapter concerning the early life of Cousin Ben. Aunt Mary
Ann Tucker was the great aunt mentioned who helped to defray his college expenses. My Mother often talked of "Aunt Tucker", as she called her. At seventeen Benj. Harvey was ready for college, and he preferred the
University of Georgia at Athens. To use his own language in giving an account of this period of his life to a friend; "A family consultant was held. My mother insisted on my going. She has always had what was called her patch, which was near the house, and was cultivated by her house servants when not needed at housework. This patch had always been my mother's pin money, amounting from $50 to $100. My mother said she would contribute this to my college expenses and would make my clothes at home besides. An old aunt of my mother's, who lived in a small house in my father's yard and had some means - small - and no children, agreed to contribute as much more. My father agreed to add the balance, and I promised that all my college expenses of every kind should not exceed $300 per annum. I promised my mother I would take first honor in my class. I redeemed this promise." And thus these two noble women opened the door of opportunity to genius. They were repaid with love, honor, and fame.

I did not personally know your Uncle Anderson Parham, but think it probably that his son may have been a class-mate of my son, Dr. Homer B. Hill, in the New Orleans Medical College some years ago, as he spoke of having a class mate there, a most excellent young man, by the name of F.W. Parham.

I shall now close with the assurance I feel gratified that you made known to me our relationship through the medium of your letter.

Appreciating the deed interest you have expressed, and with kindly greetings from my family and myself to your sister and yourself, and hoping to hear from you when convenient, I am,

Sincerely your cousin
James M. Hill
708 W. 19th St.
Austin, Texas"
Elizabeth Barksdale Hill had a son named James Monroe Hill, he fought in the 1836 Battle of San Jacinto in Texas. He was the President of the Texas Veterans Assn until his death in 1904. He wrote a lot of papers on his family and the history of the Battle of San Jacinto. His paper are at the Texas State Archives (Briscoe Center for American History)Box 2R37. Maybe your answers will be there. I am planning a trip to the archives in a couple of weeks and I will see if I have time to look in this archive box.

Thanks, James

Black Barksdale-Sullivan Families-Laurens South Carolina

I am looking for the descendants of Don Sullivan and Queen Barksdale and her parents, David Barksdale and Sarah/Sallie of Laurens, South Carolina. Following is some information I have found thus far.

Death Certificate for Queen B. Sullivan states that she was born in South Carolina on 7 June 1890 and died at 637 New Street in Knoxville, Tennessee at the age of 37 on 26 May 1928 from “Child Birth-Valvular Insufficiency.” Informant, husband Don Sullivan, lists her father as David Boskildle (b. SC) and Sallie (b. SC. Unknown maiden name) She was buried at Crest View Cemetery on 30 May 1928 (Death Certificate #11767)

Don Sullivan was born, depending on which census you use, between 1883 and 1887 in South Carolina. Family tradition has it that Don died in Knoxville, Tennessee circa 1962 and was buried by Reed Mortuary of Knoxville (Brian Winton)
1870 Laurens, South Carolina Census, page 150 shows a David Barksdale 28, Rachael 25, Preston 4, and Belmoth 2 (This may be the right David Barksdale with a different wife at this time. Preston shows up in the 1880 census as well. Need to find marriages for these folks)

1880 Laurens, South Carolina Census, page 90B, sheet #9 shows a David Barksdale 35, Sarah 27, Charles Barksdale 6 stepson, Ludy Barksdale 1 son, Preston Bill 13 stepson, John Glenn 5 mulatto stepson, Dora Barksdale 4 mulatto stepdaughter, Boss Barksdale 3 son, and Gane Watts 55 “other.” (Census says Sarah, who may be Sallie, had 17 children at the time, 10 living. This may be the David and Sallie Barksdale family. David and Sarah must have had previous marriages)

A death certificate for an A.B. Barksdale , who was born circa 1874 and died at the age of 69 on 14 November 1943 in Scuffletown, Laurens South Carolina, lists his parents as David Barksdale and Sarah Garlington. He was widowed and married to Laura Barksdale. A.B. was a farmer-Tenant and buried at Pleasant View (Death Certificate #870. Do not know if A.B. is related)

1900 Laurens, South Carolina Census, page 205A, sheet #9 shows David Barksdale 65 SC, SC, SC, (b. May 1835) Sallie 60 SC, SC, SC (b. April 1840) Thomas 17 (b. April 1883) Ida 13 (b. April 1887) Iaasac 12 (b. December 1888) Nannie 11 (b. June 1889) Rob 5 (b. October 1895) and Mamie 4 (b. June 1896) David and Sallie have been married 23 years, or since 1877 (Considering Queen’s death certificate and sister Ida Lou Sullivan Evan’s marriage record, I believe Nannie is Queen and this is her family. Queen’s death certificate lists her father as David Baskidle/Boskildle and mother as Sallie. Ida lists her mother as Queen Backsdale. I think there are transcription errors where the Baskidle/Boskilde and Barksdale name is concerned)

1900 Laurens, South Carolina Census, page 7, sheet B, family 130 shows Ludy Barksdale 30 (March 1870) Corrie 30 (Jan. 1870) Eveline 9 (Feb. 1891) John 3 (Jan. 1897) and Washington 2 (Feb. 1898) The next family 131 is Charles Barksdale 24 (May 1876) Lou 23 (June 1877) and Burgess 2 (March 1898) Family 129 shows an A.B. Barksdale 16 (Dec. 1883) servant in the Harley Franks household (I believe Ludy and Charles to be the same people found in the household of David Barksdale family in 1880)

1910 Laurens, South Carolina Census, page 17, family 277 shows a “Dare” Barksdale 70 SC, SC, SC, Marey 60 Africa, Africa, Mamie 15 daughter, Lee 17 son, A.C. Boyd 14 step grandson (I listed this family just in case the “Dare” is a transcription error and is actually Dave. I am not able to see the actual census. Also, there is a Mamie 4 with the David Barksdale family in 1900. Ages are off for Dare/Dave, but this is common)

1910 Dials, Laurens South Carolina Census, family #115 shows Don Sullivan 23 SC, SC, SC, Queen Sullivan 21 (b. 1889 SC as were parents) Rufus 4, Harlee 3, Sallie M. 2, and Claud (female) 8 months.
Greeneville, South Carolina, Fairview Death Records show that Charlie Barksdale was born circa 1880 and died at the age of 37 on 11 May 1917 of “Pulmonary Tuberculosis” in Greeneville, Township of Fairview. He was married to Lou Barksdale and was a farm hand. Informant, wife Lou of Fountain Inn, SC, states that Charlie’s father was Dav Barksdale and mother was Rachael Simpson. All three were born in Laurens, South Carolina and he was buried at Mount Carmel (Death Certificate #8687. I believe this is the Charles Barksdale (stepson) found in the David and Sarah Barksdale household in 1880. In 1870 David Barksdale is married to Rachael. Charlie is in the 1900 Laurens, South Carolina census with his wife Lou and children)
1920 Laurens South Carolina Census, sheet 13 shows Don Sullivan 37, Queen Sullivan 31 (b. 1889 SC) Rufus 14, Arlee (Harley) 13, Sallie Mae 12, Claudia L. 10, Ford 8, Ida Lou 7, Call (?) 5, No (?) 3, and Floyd 2 (This family also includes James Henry Sullivan and Eugene “Jeep” Sullivan. This family apparently came to Knoxville between 1920 and 1928, the time of Queen’s death)

Sarah Ann Sullivan was born 7 December 1921 and passed away in Frankfort, Kentucky on 1 December 2009. She married Robert Gilkey. She is a daughter to Don Sullivan and Queen Barksdale. She was most likely born in South Carolina.

1930 Knoxville, Knox County Tennessee Census, sheet 28A, family #313 shows Harley Sullivan 23 (b. 1907 SC) wife Rheba L. 19 TN, Ford 18 SC, Collard 15 SC, and James 6 SC (Ford, Collard, and James are brothers to Harley)
1930 Louisville, Jefferson County Kentucky Census, sheet 5B, family #85 lists Rufus Sullivan 24 SC, SC, SC, Carrie 23 TN, SC, SC, Rufus 1 TN, Robert 0 Ky, Paul 1 SC (brother to Rufus) and Ida L. Sullivan 17 SC (sister to Rufus)

Indiana Marriage Records #00556 shows a marriage between Ida Lou Sullivan and Clem Evans in Jeffersonville, Clark County Indiana on 21 June 1947. The bride’s parents were Don Sullivan and Queen Backsdale. Ida Lou was born in Knoxville, Tennessee on 14 December 1914 and resided in Louisville, Kentucky. Clem Evans was born in Alabama on 26 December 1912 and his parents were William Evans and Ada Woods.

Dial, Laurens South Caolina Death Records show an Albert Phelps who was born circa 1939 and died at the age of 1 on 22 October 1940. His father was J.Y. Phelps and his mother was Sallie Mae Sullivan of Laurens, South Carolina. They lived in Gray Court, South Carolina where Albert was buried (This may be Sallie Mae Sullivan, sister to Ford, Rufus, Ida Lou, etc)

Social Security Death Index lists Ford Sullivan, born 27 July 1911 and died in Knoxville, Tennessee in December 1983.
Claudia L. Sullivan was born in Laurens, South Carolina on 23 August circa 1910-13 and died at the Knox General Hospital of “Pneumonia-Influenza” at the age of “about 24” on 20 January 1937. She resided at 605 New Street and was divorced from Albert Samson/Sawson. Her father, Don Sullivan, lists her mother as Queen Bastell/Bostell and Claudia’s burial place as Crest View Cemetery. A.R. Whesley & Sons (?) listed as the undertaker (Death Certificate #1129)
My line was James Hamilton Barksdale I do not know where he came from but he was the father of Mary Josephine Barksdale Hall (great grandmother),Mirinda Barksdale Yielding and a brother W.A. Barksdale. They all lived at one time at Halltown outside of Red Bay Alabama. I have found very little on them. Was told there was Cherokee in this line but I have never been able to find anything past James Hamilton Barksdale nothing about his wife the mother of the above children or where they came from. Was told North Carolina but have found no proof.

We are researching the same people. Carrie Crews Ragland married a preacher. I will have to look up his name because I have went blank while typing. She lived to be about 100 years old. She was light skinned with solid white hair. She had a brother named Ernest and maybe a white father. I was trying research Millie Crews but she didnt turn up in the census until she was about 66 years old.

Well, not exactly, according to my family. Charles Henry Miller More was the father of our Grandfather, Harland Marion More. Charles Henry married Sarah Catherine Myers -- SHE was Cherokee.

The confusion comes, I think, because Harland married a woman named Sara Miller. HER father was John Buchanan Miller; her mother was Essie Stoner. So, we have two Saras, and several Millers, but on different sides of my grandfather's and grandmother's families.

Sara MILLER's mother was Bridget Bedelia CUSACK from County Clare, Ireland; her father was Emmanuel Jacob STONER from Pennsylvania. After that, I've lost track.

My grandfather used the name Eddie Eugene Williams, born 1886 in Ovid, Michigan, & also may have used the name Eugene E. Haynes, born 1887 in Michigan. Eugene E. Haynes & Oagle Barksdale married in Nevada Co., Arkansas in 1934. Ed. E. Williams married Oagle Aline Barksdale in Marion Co., Florida in 1942. When my parents had contact with my grandfather, his wife Oagle was with him. They were living in Arkansas in 1952.

Does anyone know Oagle? Or, my grandfather? Any assistance will be greatly appreciated.
