My grandpa's name was Robert Archie Byerly but for different sections of his life he called himself Robert Archie Barley - we have found he has had several families that did not know about each other. We just met my half uncle for the first time this fall. Robert Archie Barley was burried in Thomasville, N.C.

Re Robert and Joseph Barley

Both of these men were in East Texas by 1834 or so, as all the children were listed as TX born. My grandfather's mother was Emily Elizabeth Barley Crawford, daughter of Robert and Emily Barley. They were living with Joseph one year but I think that was because their mother Emily Delaney went to OK to be with her folks.

Have you heard anything about them being of Indian Origin? I hate to use that because I got a real hateful email from an authentic paper American Native Indian because I used the word "violent". Well, I think scalping is violent and not only Indians but others did that. Besides, since my mom has more Native origin blood than my dad, I guess I could say I was violent.

Emily or "Betty" as Jesse Blackston Crawford called her was dying and Jesse kept telling her not yet, wait for me. He died 3 days later. Now he was a violent man, though my dad was a mind mannered man, but his mom wasn't. And my mom could get a little riled if she had too. So violent runs in us Texans. We were Texans before Texas was Texas.
Adiene

As you will see there was a problem of parent Robert or Joseph. Della, another researcher found them in Polk Co and then they were listed in Angelina Co TX with Joseph. To tell you the truth, I still get this mixed up in my mind. You know that old stubborn as a Missouri mule attitude, no offense, just a saying, well, this Barley family is one hard one to trace and my aunt told me that she lived with her brother and all I really got from her was the name "Kit" which turned out to be a nickname or so I'm told of one of the sons.

Hopefully, I'm on the trail to finding the facts. I do know that Emily went to OK after her husband's death and I was definitely told he was of, ah heck, he was an Indian as mom saw a picture of him in full native dress which some kinfolk has and won't tell us.
Adiene

Emily Delaney was the mother to my grandfather's mother, Emily Elizabeth Barley Crawford. She married Jesse Blackston Crawford, and my grandpa was Dewitt "Dee" Crawford.

I have access to ancestry now and have found so much info on them in just two or three days. I started researching in 1970 and ancestry.com now has a lot of data that was free to all as people posted their findings online.

Would love to talk to you. They lived on Crawford Creek in Angelina Co, TX which is in East Texas and though Mary wasn't listed on the census that I have she could be related.

Mom told me that Robert was American Native Indian and there's a large photo of him that she saw in full native wear. He was from TN and they came to Texas in 1834 or so which I believe is when the Trail of Tears (Cherokee)Event occurred. So far, I've not found proof but Emily went to OK to be with her people leaving her daughters Emily Elizabeth and Eliza who married a Tucker, here in East Texas. The Tucker's and Parker's were related and Quintan, the white chief that was stolen and so bad was from these Parkers.

That's why many people can't find their family if they stayed back east. These people came from TN to TX in about a year or two and it was then the Republic of Tecas (Mexico)
Adiene Crawford Humble

Mary Ann lived most of her life in Washington, Kansas, but had children living in Nebraska. It was taken in the early 1900s, probably 20s. Lundie Roche Dyer

Hi Betty, you may not remember me but we exchanged emails years ago.

My grandfather's father, Jesse Blackston Crawford, married Emily Elizabeth Barley, who was his second wife. There are several of us researching, several opinions, as well. My mom saw a picture of "Betty's" father and he was dressed what she described as Native American (Indian nation).

I've corresponded with several people and though his attire was described by my mother as what I took to be those trouser things with the loin cloth and headband. Now I did not see this picture but my mother did. It is said that after his death, his wife possibly Emily Delaney, went to OK to be with her people. Another daughter did marry a Tucker. They were listed with Robert in one of the census and with Joseph and Emily in Polk Co, TX in another census.

My Aunt Mae talked about "Kit" Barley who I believe may have been Robert's son (I've not researched this line very well)but she told me they lived out by our old site of the Paper mill.

Her father Robert is listed as an 'auctioneer'

Kind regards, Anne

Anne,
You seem to have access to a lot of sources I have not identified yet and have provided great information. The Liverpool Harry Barley looks suspiciously like Henry Owen Barley since his marriage record to Elvina Lillian lists his father's name as Samuel and a Photographer. Makes no mention of him being deceased but that could just be an oversight. My grandfather's father was also listed as Samuel but occupation as Master Mariner(deceased). With all the information compiled, I think your conclusion is probably correct Harry (Liverpool) and Harry Owen have a strong probability of being the same person. But my grandfather remains an enigma, I do have a photograph of him though :O).

Of course family history could also be confused because Henry Owen seems to have been well known to the local constabulary in Brisbane and they may have made the connection incorrectly to my grandfather and my grandmother's refusal to travel to Australia resulted in that never being proven one way or the other. So maybe my grandfather did perish at sea.

Thanks for your help,
Dave

Hi Anne,
I really appreciate all the help you are giving me , thanks. Trying to assimilate all the information you have given me and answer a few of your questions. I have located marriage record of Henry Barley to Elvina Lillian Evanson in 1891 in Toxeth Park Liverpool and Birth, Baptismal and Death information of their son William James Barley in 1894-1895 period. There is also a death record for Elvina in 1895 as well. In the marriage record Henry's father is recorded as Samuel but not deceased. The marriage record of Henry ( Harry) Barley to my grandmother shows Henry's father Samuel deceased and Henry as a widow.

Family history says that Harry Barley and Harriet Barley ( nee Ponsford) had a daughter who died very young, so it could have been Gladys.
The information you found on Martha Barley and her Mother looks dubious since if it is the same person, the relocation to Toxeth Park, Liverpool does not show Henry as a resident and he was only 12 at the time. An Arthur Barley at 4 would be a mystery since she would have been a widow but who knows?

The 1871 census data is interesting although it does not list Samuel, as a seafaring person he would have been at sea a lot. Same seems to apply for Henry in later life.

To sum it all up it appears we have a Henry Barley and a Henry Owen Barley that seem to be very coincidentally moving in the same time frame with a lot of circumstantial evidence that ties them as one but not that direct link. The Henry Barley in Liverpool could also be the same person or a third person.
Isn't this a lot of fun!!!!
I do thank you for your help on this, I plan to talk with some of my family in the UK to see if anyone has any information on the Owen christian name, funny enough my cousin has a son called Owen Barley and I have a grandson called Owen. Weird if true.
Many Thanks Dave

Good Morning,
Thanks for the extra information, difficult to pin down when he was last in Wales, last official date was 1899, being a seaman he obviously was away from home a lot and he does not show up in the 1901 census data through his wife does. My mother was born in 1910 so he must have been around then but she passed away in 2001 and again family history indicates he was missing while my mother was a young girl. Certainly the 1918 marriage of Henry Owen Barley in Queensland seems to fit as does the fact that his father is reported as Samuel, which is the same name as appears on his marriage certificate to my grandmother. Interestingly, this marriage certificate indicates he was a widower at the time of this marriage. This opens up another potential connection to a Harry Barley , a seaman who married Elvina Lillain Evanson in Liverpool in 1901 and had a son William James who died in his first year followed by the death of his wife several months after that. It is a interesting puzzle. Thank you so much for responding with addition information
Dave

Thanks for the follow up and the additional information, If this is the same Harry Barley as my grandfather, he married Harriet Ponsford in 1899 in Newport Wales ( I have the marriage certificate listing his father as Samuel). They had four children that survived, Arthur, Reginald, Ivy ( my mother) and Violet. He vanished while my mother was very young and family history indicates he was shipwrecked off the Great Barrier Reef and drowned. Again family history says he bigamous remarried and when asked to traveled to Australia to testify my grand mother refused.
My problem is that he was never known by the name Owen and I have difficulty making the direct connection. But you have given me a whole lot of fresh information that helps. Thank you, and anything else you can dig up let me know.
Dave

Does anybody know of a connection between the Barleys of southern Virginia (Halifax and/or Pittsylvania Counties) and the Barleys of northern Virginia (Frederick County) from the period of the late 1700s and early 1800s? Does someone know of one or more Barleys who moved from one location to the other? My ancestor was David Barley and I know of one by that name who in 1800 registered to vote in Halifax county and another by that name who married late in 1800 in Frederick County to Sarah Bostion and who apparently appears there on the 1810 census. I have also seen information of John Barleys (perhaps a relation to my ancestor David) who lived in both counties during that era. If someone knows any information about any David Barley in Virginia during the late 1700s and early 1800s, I'd greatly appreciate it. I believe my ancestor David had a total of five children, John (abt. 1802), Mary (abt. 1804), George (abt. 1807), Elizabeth (abt. 1809), all of whom were born in Virginia, and their youngest brother David (1812), my ancestor, who was born in Pennsylvania. The family moved around 1811 to Butler County, Pennsylvania and all but David Jr. died there -- David Sr. in the 1840s, his wife in the 1830s and four of their children betwen 1879 and 1888. David Jr. moved with his wife Margaret (Lutz) Barley first to Scioto County, OH and later to McLeod County, Minnesota.

Re: David Barley - Butler Co., PA

I believe that David Barley Jr. had several older siblings: John (1802), Mary (1804), George (1807) and Elizabeth (1810) who were born in Virginia, but moved with their parents David Sr. and ???? (perhaps Sarah Bostion) before David Jr. was born in 1812 to Muddy Creek Township, Butler County, Pennsylvania. The portion of Muddy Creek township on which they lived later became part of Franklin township in the 1840s and part of Brady township in 1854. After David Jr. and his wife Margaret (Lutz) Barley moved with their children to Ohio, his siblings continued to operate the family farm. I think that maybe the Butler County neighbors of the Barleys, Daniel and Christena Lutz, may have been the parents of Margaret (Margaretha), all of whom migrated from Hesse Darmstadt, Germany in 1832.

Hi Lauren

The website is amazing and I wonder if it was okay if I showed my mum. She will be so thrilled to see pictures of part of her mums family. I notice you haven't got one daughter of Albert Jacob Barley and Alice Skinner. My nan was Ivy Barley born in 1910 in Woolwich who married an Albert Edward Drew.

Keep in touch

Wendi

I can't tell you how thrilled I am to hear from you! I've been looking for you :-)
I knew there had to be some descendants from Albert Jacob out there somewhere!
William is my great granddad which makes us cousins. I've also found & met a descendant from their sister Eliza - he lives in Sussex.
So please fill me in on all the details of Albert's line! In my research I've identified 7 children of Albert with his two wives. My great-uncle Will married Albert's eldest
daughter Ethel (1st cousins!) so there are additional connections there. Please email me directly laurenbrockman at comcast dot net. Also, if you've not seen a picture of your gg-grandmother, see my website for Ellen/Eleanor (Whiteman) Barley's picture. http://fearncombe-hyde.rootsweb.com/FamilyRelations-p/
Write soon!
