Obit of James Barner 1909

From the Chatsworth Plaindealer
Chatsworth,Livingston,Illinois

JAMES BARNER
DECEMBER 3, 1909

The death of James Barner occurred at the home of his father-in-law, Daniel B. Puffer, on Maple street, between Fourth and Fifth streets, on Thursday afternoon shortly after two o'clock. He had been in feeble health for several years, being afflicted with a valvular heart trouble, which finally cause his death.
James Barner was born near Cullom, Ill. on October 26, 1872. His parents having died when he was a small boy, he was reared by Mrs. Amelia Conrad, who now resides the the southwest part of this city, but who then lived in the vicinity of Cullom.
James Barner was united in marriage with Miss Ella Puffer, of Chatsworth, on December 11, 1895. Four children were born to the union -- May, Flora, Bruce and Ruth -- the last being less than a year of age. In addition to the bereaved wife and children he is survived by three sisters and two brothers -- Mrs. T.H. Dewey, of Little Falls, Minn.; Miss Fannie Barner, of St. Paul; Mrs. John C. Beckman, of Rensselaer, Ind.; A.L. Barner, of Centralia, Wash.; William Barner, who reside near Cullom.
With the exception of a few years' residence in Iowa and in Fairbury, Mr. and Mrs. Barner have made their home in Chatsworth since their marriage. By his honest, straightforward manner, kindly disposition and quiet temperament, James Barner made many friends, by whom he will be greatly missed. He was a kind husband and devdoted father and the sympathy of the entire community is with the grief stricken wife and little children.
The funeral services will be held at the Chatsworth Baptist church on Saturday afternoon at one thirty o'clock and the interment will be at the Chatsworth cemetery. The remains may be viewed at the house only.

There is no John Barner related to Rashelle. I just met with the living siblings of Bill Sr. They say there is definitely no John Barner in our line, at least not their sibling.

BTW, we met a whole host of "other" Barners. They were from Iowa, and Colorado mostly. The next reunion is in Greensboro in '12. Hope you stay in touch.

I don't think the one Rachelle replied to is the same one you are looking for. Do you have any more details? This is my reply to her.

I am Anthony Pace, grandson of Rosa Barner, Aunt of William Sr. We are 2nd cousins, once-removed. I have an extensive tree, and do not have a John Barner listed as one of Sr's brothers. However I DO know that sometimes the lines aren't always straight. William's Parents were Nathan Barner and Ester Davis. Was there a different mom? If so, I can add them to the tree. William does have brothers and maybe a sister alive. I will contact the one I have email for and ask about John.

Mr regular email address is wsap7654@hotmail.com. Ironically, the ws stands for WSSU where I graduated. I didn't even know I had family in Winston all that time. I did talk to your Aunt Aldora on the phone a few years ago, but have still to meet her or any of the others. I also met Boyd Barner, Jr. in Greensboro about a year ago.

I also know that there is a reunion in Atlanta in early August.

I have the documents your interested in please contact me at bstone7@roadrunner.com. I do not frequent the ancestry bulletin board so I just happen on to your post again.

William Stone – Purchased 97 acres, Randolph County, NC Deed Book 2, page 204/204. William and Conway Stone granted 200 Acre, Randolph Co., NC Deed Bk. 3, pages 345/346. Grant is in William’s name but paid for by Conway in 1788. John Stone son of William and Hannah - 200 acre grant Randolph County, North Carolina, Deed Book 7 page 345. Close proximity to William and Hannah’s land. Conway Randolph Co., North Carolina, Deed Bk. 6, p. 185 John Stone - Randolph County North Carolina Deed Book 8, page 155. Conway Stone -Randolph County North Carolina Deed Book 8 page 197. There are more records related to Conway in Randolph.

Briefly the History is: William, Hannah, and Conway, their son, move to Randolph after the sale to Paul Starbuck in 1786. It appears William died there in circa 1788/89. He is not showing in the 1790 census. Conway does appear in the census and it looks like Hannah is in his household. John Stone sells his land in Stokes and moves to Randolph before Hannah's death circa 1793/94. Conway sold his own land in 1793 and sold William and Hannah’s land in 1794. It appears Conway and John worked the grant John had received. John returned to Stokes in 1797 and Conway stayed and farmed a 200 acre grant they shared in Randolph. In 1800 John sold the grant and Conway bought 100 acres of new land in Randolph. He lived there until about 1805. Then Conway sold all his holdings in Randolph. Conway in his RW pension mentioned Randolph County when I followed up his trail the above records could be found.

I am writing a book on the Stones call the "Chronicle of Thomas Stone of Hamilton Parish". It is going to change William Stones history in NC and Virginia rather radically. It is very well sourced. At one time William and Hannah lived in Fauquier. His father was Thomas Stone of Hamilton Parish. His brothers were Thomas Stone who married Mary Butler and John who married Mildruge Corder. John Stone lived Fauquier until 1775 and then in Laurens County South Carolina until his death in 1800. He never lived in Surry or Stokes. This is proven in great detail in the book with deeds and other types of records.

I am working with Jean stone Hall author of the Stones of Stokes and she was interested in the Barner family. Your brick wall is coming down. – Bill Stone
It has been quite awhile since I've looked over the information I transcribed from copies of documents I secured at the NC Archives; and quickly reviewing the information, it appears that the land information I secured was from Stokes County, not the surrounding counties. I'd be most interested in the documentation you have for the land transactions mentioned in your posting and any further information you might have on these particular families. The Stone family in particular has been a brick wall of mine!

I wanted to compliment your work on the Stone and Banner Line. I did find one minor error.

William and Hannah Stone sold there property in 1785. They moved to Randolph County NC. They bought 96 acres there and got a 200 acre grant in William's name but it was signed for by Conway Stone his son in 1788. Conway sold the it 1791. In the meantime it appears John Stone moved there in 1792. He recieved a grant in Randolph in 1792. Conway kept the original homestead until 1793. He then sold it and moved onto the land of his brother John. John and Conway held that land until 1800. However John got another grant in Stokes for 200 acres in 1796. John Stone was married to Bethsy Curry.

In 1907 with the aid of Mrs. Evans, Rev. Spruce, a Holiness Methodist minister of Wilson Co., Texas built home for her and up to 19 others. It was operated as a school with outside students welcome.
Joe:

In surfing around in my research, I came across this post. I am a great grandson of Robert H. Barner, also. My line is through Lalla Dewdrop Barner Bryant(1892-1961), wife of R.A. Bryant. I was raised in Fordyce and visited with all the Barners in Ramsey. Spent many a afternoon in Uncle Forrest Barner's feed store and Aunt Annie would give me ice cream when we visited her and Uncle Maurice.

I realize this is an old post so I am going to try to send a regular email to the old address.

Harry Short
Pea Ridge, AR
leeshrt@yahoo.com

BARNER/BERNER

It has been a while since I posted on my Barner/Berner families so I thought I would give it another try.

I am looking for any connections of JOSHUA BARNER born 1803 in Cobleskill, Schoharie, New York. I believe his father's name was GEORGE BERNER/BARNER and his grandfather's name was CONRAD BERNER/BARNER from Switzerland. It seems that they changed their name due to some type of family feud. He, JOSHUA BARNER, was married to SARAH CAROLINE WENTWORTH b. September 04, 1828 in Ancram, Columbia, New York.

They had four children that I know of: LEVI BARNER b. 1832, MARY BARNER b. 1835, EVA BARNER b. 1837 and HENRY WENTWORTH BARNER, my great-grandfather, b. 1839 in Cobleskill, Schoharie, New York. He d. May 1920. Henry was married to RACHEL FRANCES WATKINS b. 1845 in Cobelskill, Schoharie, New York.

HARRY WENTWORTH BARNER b. 1875 married RACHEL FRANCES WATKINS b. 1845. They had three children: PIERCE BARNER, NEAL BARNER and FRANCES BARNER.

I believe some of them may have relocated to Grundy County, Illinois or Van Buren County, MI later in their lives but we are not sure. I would appreciate any help anyone can give me.
Gratefully,
Earlene
Hi! I thought I would take another look at your message from 10/06. I discovered that the Clint Barner that I was looking for was your ggrandmother Hattie's father. Do you think that any of your cousins would have any information on who Hattie's grandparents might be or where they might have come from? I know that Clint's father was born in North Carolina and Clint had one brother - Celustus Dee Barner. If you find out anything, please email me at lakeviewrv@hesenergy.net. Thanks!!
Lynn

I would appreciate any information that you may have on the families in Ozark County. This is for my own family records, I have not published any trees online.
Do you know any of the names of the spouses or children/grandchildren? Feel free to write me directly. Thanks, Joyce

Sorry to take so long - lots of things going on. My ggrandmother Hattie Barner married Isaac Hedrick Reagor. She was born in 1880 and died in 1949. Isaac Hedrick Reagor was born June 1873 and died in 1945. They are both buried in Salem Cemetery near Rutherford, TN. They had one son Maurice Reagor. I believe Hattie had brothers Lon, Carl and one called Kipp don't know - that might have been a nickname. Possibly more siblings that's all I remember my Mom talking about. I would love any info you might share.

Thanks!
