Mamie Barnes, 1878-1904, Detroit/Cass City, Michigan

Who is Mamie Barnes???

Please read portions of article printed in Tri-County Chronicle, Cass City, Michigan, December 24, 1904 –

"Deadly Souvenir
A Navy Shell Does Deadly Work in a Peaceful Home.

Lifeless and horribly mutilated, the body of Mrs. Mamie Barnes, aged 26 years, was found Thursday noon across the threshhold of a doorway at the family home, 253 Pine street, Detroit.
A shell, containing a powerful explosive, which had been sent as a curio to Mrs. Barnes by her brother, Wm. Mayhu, a United States navy gunner stationed at Newport News, was the cause of her death, although murder was at first feared.
. . . At 9:30 o'clock neighbors heard the detonation of a terrific explosion. Rushing out of doors in their alarm they sought the cause, but failed to find it. The Barnes home, as well as others in the vicinity, was quiet . . .
A few minutes before 12 o’clock a passing milkman noticed smoke issuing from an open window of the Barnes home . . .
. . . The fire had evidently been smouldering for several hours, and was just gaining headway. Had the rescuing party been much later . . . and the two little children, one only a few months old and the other less than 3 years old, would probably have been killed also . . . “

Note that this occurred in Detroit but article is from Tri-County Chronicle. Many of my Barnes/Thompson/Hopps people came from and lived in the Tri-County area at this time, which probably accounts for the notice in this paper.

Mamie Mayhu Barnes – she may be one of the gaps in my tree. Mamie could be a nickname for Mable or ??

Please contact me direct, if you recognize this.
Thanks!
LibralLady@!aol.com

I find them 1900 and 1910 in ILL.

Children (ages 1900)
Adella Barnes 13
Alice Barnes 11

Adella may have been Myrtie Adella.

===
I am researching Adella Barnes Johnson, who married Ralph Grant (Sr.)

Name: Adella Barnes
Birth: 22 Apr 1887
Death: 16 Mar 1975 - Washington, Washington, PA
Spouse: Ralph Grant Johnson

Ralph G Johnson
19 Mar 1884 WashDC
22 Apr 1942 Washington, Washington, PA

Their children:
Marian Alice Johnson
16 Jan 1913
18 Mar 2004

Woodruff Barnes Johnson
19 Mar 1884
22 Apr 1942

Ralph Grant Johnson
9 Dec 1917
4 Aug 1974

--
Adella possibly had connection to a YWCA (girls) summer camp located near Claysville, Buffalo Twp, Washington Co PA.

I'm interested in getting more info about the ancestry of BARNES and of JOHNSON, and about the Camp. What made BARNES get to Washington Co PA and when did she meet Ralph? What made Ralph JOHNSON get to Washington Co PA? Who are Adella's grandparents?

Judy Florian

Note: This Adella appears on an Ancestry Tree, but the names / tree functions are broken today so I can't see the tree.

BARNES, Robert - hit by train in 1913 - Greene County, Illinois

Hi,
I am looking for information about a Robert Barnes who was hit by a train in 1913. I came across a Coroner's Hearing held at White Hall, Greene County, Illinois, dated 5 Oct 1913 for a Robert Barnes. The verdict was that he "came to his death by being struck by C&A train off a bridge at Seminary Creek 1 1/2 miles south of White Hall.
Any information (a newspaper article or an obit would be wonderful) would be greatly appreciated. Think this might be great-grandpa.
Thanks,
Cheryl BARNES Salvi

MY Victor's mother died shortly after giving birth. Father Henry/Thomas had (4) other children so neighbors offered to care for Victor. Then they moved away and family lost track of Victor til he was grown. The Victor named above was called Victor Barnes/adopted on the 1880 U.S. Census for Chase Twp., Lake County, MI.

According to one of my sources, this Victor kept the name Jamieson and his children were Ralph, Ira (Esa), Fern, Elton, and Deisy (Daisy?)

Joseph Barnes -- Lifetime Achievement Award recipient

This is not part of my ancestry, but I hope someone appreciates this article for theirs.

August 6, 2008

Joseph Barnes of Bendheim [Glass Manufacturer] received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Glass Guild (AGG), honoring his lifetime dedication to the stained glass industry. Joe’s career has spanned over 60 years, of which almost 40 are with Bendheim. He is the first recipient of the award now to be presented annually as the “Joe Barnes Lifetime Achievement Award.”

“Joe’s love of people and deeply rooted work ethic have made him a great asset to Bendheim and the stained glass industry,” said Robert Jayson, President of Bendheim. “Joe is known to be the first man in to work and one of the last to leave; one of the few who can always be relied upon to do the job, no matter what the task. I cannot imagine how many thousands of people he has helped with color selection, substitutions, shipping questions or just “how-to” advice. From assisting visitors to our warehouse to answering a telephone call, Joe has always been there to help.”

Joe Barnes himself smiles as he reflects on his lifelong journey in the field. “I got in the glass business by accident, and I never thought I would stay in it for so long,” he admits.

After World War II, Joe found his first glass job at Leo Popper’s importers of specialty glass, almost by accident. He spent years learning the business under Popper’s guidance. In 1969, Popper closed its doors, and Barnes brought his skills to Bendheim.

Joe Barnes started out at Bendheim with a variety of jobs, including customer service, glass selection, cutting, and delivery. He is still actively involved in the company’s stained glass division, and has many loyal customers to date.

“I love working with glass,” Barnes explains. ”It has charm, beauty and so many design possibilities, there is so much you can do with it. The other great part of this job is working with people. I enjoy talking to them and helping them choose their glass.”

Joe has seen Bendheim grow from a small family-owned business to a national specialty glass company with five divisions, over 100 employees, facilities on both coasts, and a New York City showroom. As the company has evolved, Joe’s commitment to work has not diminished: With his children grown up, Bendheim is as much a part of his life as ever.

“I do not want to retire. I love the family-like friendliness and connection with people here. I do not think such atmosphere exists in companies any more. This job is my life.”
Jesse Barnes married Mary (?) and died in 1848.

Dennis Barnes died between 1850 and 1860 in Benton County, Tennessee. His son, William Barnes, married Sarah Wyatt on 14 January 1827 in Humphreys County, Tennessee and made their home in the part of that county that became Benton County, Tennessee in 1836. She was a daughter of James and Ellendor Wyatt, who also came from South Carolina. His wife Sarah died 25 April 1863. She was a daughter of James A. and Ellendor Wyatt of South Carolina. Ellendor Wyatt last appeared in the home of William Barnes during the 1850 census of the Second Civil District, Benton County.

William James Barnes, son of Rev. William and Sarah Barnes, also became a Methodist Minister and inherited his fathers Bible. He married Martha Brown on 3 September 1862. Martha Brown was born 8 November 1839, died 19 November 1871 and buried in an unmarked grave at the Palestine Methodist Cemetery.

William James and Martha Barns had issue:

1.

I pretty new to family research, but been on a bit of a role. Got back to me gt gt grandad. Found his death cerificate but there is no record of him on any cencus before 1891. I know where he was born in 1852 (i think!) and died in 1896 but there is no record of his marriage either. Feeling very fustrated. Also i would love to know how to search via street names as i have a few addresses to check, but i can't.

Hello, I am starting to look for a Barnes family and hope someone here might know more about them:
1850 Roanoke Co., VA. running a hotel:
Sarah BARNES 36, and her children
Elizabeth 18, Jackson, 16, Mary 14, Edward 12, John 10, Georgiana 8 (whom I believe is my ancestor...later married James Burke of Covington, VA.), William B 6. It looks as if the father MAY be Aaron BARNES. I found an Aaron BARNES 1840 Southampton Co., VA. Hoping I might be on the right track, but would appreciate any help I can get.
Obituary for George A. Thomas, 1863, Hopkinton, Rhode Island

I need help finding a community newspaper or gazette where a death notice, obituary, funeral service or obsequies, memorial or burial service may have been reported. The time will be about April or May, 1863. The place for the funeral or memorial service may have been at Hopkinton, Washington County, Rhode Island, or Westerly, Washington County, Rhode Island. The burial service would have been at River Bend Cemetery, Westerly, Rhode Island. The person of interest is Private George A. Thomas, a Union soldier in the US Civil War serving with Company A, Seventh Regiment, Rhode Island Volunteers. Private George A. Thomas died on active duty April 14, 1863 in an Army hospital, Baltimore, Maryland. His body was transported “home” most likely to Hopkinton, Rhode Island where his wife, Lucy Kenyon, and two children resided. His body was buried in River Bend Cemetery, Westerly, Rhode Island, in the Barnes plot. Any assistance will be appreciated.

Bob Doughty, Seattle, Washington
Louisa Barnes / Laver

Researching Laver history and I am having some trouble finding information on Louisa Barnes (GGGM) who is listed on Henry Wiliam Laver/Harriet Grace Johnson marriage Cert. in 1900 as being Henry's mother. She is also listed on his death certificate. I am guessing that she was born approx 1850. Henry William states on marriage cert. that he was born in Windsor.Victoria Australia - don't know if she was born in Australia though. Have searched for Birth Cert. on Henry William and cannot find one - thinking this would help me with the name Louisa. I can find a certificate around the right date for a William Harry with a "Lucilla" Barnes being the mother - am not sure if Louisa & Lucilla are the same person. Have searched for birth certificate on Louisa Barnes with no luck. If anyone has information relating to the above it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Ros

My name is Barbara Bretthauer Marquez Froyland.

My Barnes Family connection follows:

Me>
Clifford H. Bretthauer m. Rose Elizabeth Bryan (my mother), daughter of
John Nathan Bryan and Elberta O'Berry, daughter of
James Franklin O'Berry and Elizabeth Waller Barnes, Florida, daughter of
Laura Kate Niblack and James Alpheus Barnes, Florida, son of
Elizabeth Jane ?? and Benjamin Barnes (born 1804/5), Darlington, SC, son of
Unknown and Jesse (Jr?) Barnes (b. abt 1765) NC, son of
Orpha Fort and Jesse (Sr?)Barnes (b. abt 1738 Edgecombe County NC)

I have documentation on this line back through the Florida Barnes families, but would very much appreciate information about Benjamin Barnes' father Jesse and back. I inherited many old Barnes (and Bryan) photos and correspondence between Elizabeth Waller Barnes and her sister and niece - from the 1920s and 1930s. Elizabeth Waller Barnes O'Berry (d. 1946)also had an interest in genealogy...she left handwritten lists of Barnes' family births, marriages and deaths of her parents, siblings and children.

Thank you for any information you will share regarding this Barnes' family.

Barbara
bfroyland@comcast.net

William Francis Barnes

We believe that my great grandfather, William Francis Barnes, was born in Brooklyn New York on 31 Jul 1873. According to his Death Certificate (issued in Sydney New South Wales, Australia after his death on the 16th of January 1959), his parents were James Barnes (a master baker, born 1849) & Anna Maria Eberhardt. We know nothing about these people, other than their names, and have been unable to find anything at all using the Ancestry Search facility.

I've had no success in obtaining a birth certificate for William, which I'm sure would assist in providing his parents' details.

I hope someone out there can help me!

Barnes Family

Hi
I'm researching Barnes too. I know my GGG Grandfather Alexander born 1796, was from Kilmore which at one time was in either Down or Monaghan depending on where and when borders were moved. He married a Jane Forsyth born c 1801 in Ireland before moving to Yorkshire, England sometime in the early 1820's. Before moving there they had a son William Warner Barnes who joined the Army in Yorkshire and went out to New Zealand to fight in the Maori Wars. He stayed there and married a girl he met on the ship out.
I believe I may have found Jane Forsyth's parents as they were named in the Baptism records for the children she had with Alexander. They were John and Susannah Forsyth and the only couple I can find on the NET emigrated to Pennsylvania. The Latter Day Saints 'Family Search' site shows a family with 4 children emigrating in the late 1700 early 1800's and they even show a daughter Jane born at the same time as my Jane but, stating that she was born in the USA. I hoping that whoever added that record on the LDS site got it wrong. I think that the remaining family emigrated to the States but that Jane married and came to England. That's why I'm writing, as my Alexander Barnes family may have emigrated to the USA at the same time.
My information ends with Alexander so I can't give you any info on the Barnes family in Ireland before he was born. However, if you think he may be one of your Barnes ancestors too then I am more than happy to give you information on his decendants.
Happy hunting
Sandra

William Barnes and Mary Marietta German

I'm looking to continue backwards with my Barnes family line. The farthest back I have now is:

William Barnes
b. 1735
Georges Creek, Allegany County, Maryland
d. 1824
Tygarts Valley, Marion County, West Virginia

Married ABT 1762 in
George`s Creek, Alleghany, Virginia, USA to:

Mary Marietta German
b. 1742
Marion County, West Virginia
d. 1815
Monongalia County, Virginia

Does anyone know either of these two's parents? I know this Barnes family is well reseacrhed downwards (descendants), but I've never come across anything farther back than this William and Mary Barnes. I would like to track down the Barnes back to their "home" country (Barnes sounds English), can anyone help me out?
