I've been trying to reply to this post for about a week, with no luck. This is a "test" reply. If anyone wants info on this query, then email me at WCBarney@aol.com.

So, OK, it accepted this "test" reply. Let me try to post my original reply:

George May's information came from me. I have never said that Naomi Barney's maiden name WAS Rutherford, just that it MAY HAVE BEEN Rutherford because a couple of her grandchildren had the middle name Rutherford.

I now believe that Naomi's maiden name was Taylor. This Naomi (Taylor) Barney was born in 1774 in N.J. (Re. 1850 census)

Will of Elias Taylor dated 28 July 1798, recorded in Orange County Surrogate's Office, Goshen, NY. ... I appoint Caleb Taylor and John Barney Executors. ... Naomy my daughter and John Barney to have the use of that land and the care of my son Samuel if they continue in this part of the Country. ...

I believe that John Barney, Naomi's husband, was that John Barney, b. 1 Oct 1770 of Clifton Springs, Ontario Co., N.Y., the son of Benjamin and Amy (Conklin) Barney of Sudbury, Middlesex Co., Mass.

Howard Wilburn Barney, great-grandson of Thomas Marion Barney, Sr., says that the Barney family came to Greenup Co., Kentucky in flat boats on the Ohio River in 1818. His wife was named Naomi, and is found on the 1850 census of District #2, Greenup Co., Kentucky living with her son, Thomas Marion Barney, Sr. On that census, Naomi is age 76, born in New Jersey. The 1820 Federal census of Greenup Co., Kentucky lists: John Barney; 1 male aged 45 and up; 2 males aged 26 - 44; 2 males aged less than 10; 1 female aged 45 and up; 1 female aged 26 - 44; 2 females aged 10 - 15; 1 female aged less than 10.

"The History of Greenup Co ., Kentucky," by Biggs and MacKay [p. 117] starts the history of the Greenup County Barney family as follows: "Three brothers, Thomas, Squire, and Benjamin Barney, resided in Greenup County before 1823. They settled on Tygart and Shultz Creeks. Thomas married Barbara Shaffer. He died in 1851 and his wife in 1873. Squire married Rebecca Douglas January 22, 1822. Court records, dated July 29, 1838, mention heirs of Squire Barney, deceased, as being Elizabeth Ann, Martha Ann, Sarah Ann, Benjamin Franklin, and Amy Barney Nichols. Benjamin, the third brother, married Sitha, daughter of James and Jane Greenslate, June 3, 1827."

The two Barney girls, Clarissa and Elizabeth, who married the Woolslayer brothers, COULD HAVE BEEN the daughters of John and Naomi (Taylor) Barney. This Naomi was living with her son Thomas Marion Barney in 1850; might well have been the same Naomi Barney living next to the Woolslayers in Allegheny Co., Pa. in 1840. I have one (anecdotal) source that says Clarissa, daughter of John Barney, was born in Covington, Ky. in 1812.

Clarissa married John Woolslare in Pittsburgh on Dec. 25th, 1835. [Re. Alan Farneth (afarn3@hotmail.com)(4/9/2000)]

Posted on GenForum.com by Gerard Fallon (gerardfallon@comcast.net) (9/23/2005): Looking for information on Elizabeth Barney Woolslayer. The family has very little to go on. She is buried in the Beulah Prebyterian Church Cemetery in Churchill, PA. Her gravestone apparently only states the following: Mrs. Elizabeth Woolslayer - died July 14, 1857 - Aged 49 years. But family lore has it that her maiden name was Barney and that she was the daughter of John R (possibly Robert) Barney and that she/they may have been from NY. [WCB: But Allegheny Cemetery in Pittsburgh (FindaGrave Memorial #33499507; Plot: Section: 31, Lot: 143, Grave: 1) has that she d. 3 Sep 1854 in Pittsburgh].
