Aaron O. Barney, 82, R. R. 2, Xenia, died Monday morning at the Fayetteville Memorial Hospital, Washington C. H.
He was a retired farmer and was born in Peebles June 20, 1885, son of Mose and Harriet Miller Barney, both deceased. His wife, Minnie Tolle Barney, died in 1965.
Surviving, one daughter, Mrs. Guy Pearl Wallen, Washington C. H.; a sister, Mrs. William Miller Medford; two brothers, Arthur, of Hillsboro, and Clifford, of Paradise, California, twelve grandchildren and fourteen great-grandchildren.
Funeral services Wednesday at 1 p.m. at the McColaugh Funeral Home in Xenia and burial in the Locust Grove cemetery.

Hi Cliff,

Excellent! I don't have all my notes in front of me right now but I have a few comments. As for Ambrose Cleveland, I have his mother's name as Keturah Briggs, not Deturah. As for the rest of your info on Mary Barney and Ambrose Cleveland, it looks like my info matches up, same for the Giles Barney info. I was unsure about son David for Giles and Mary, not awfully important but I will eventually look into that further.

Now, I do have what I believe is a correction. Sarah Hodges Lincoln (daughter of Nebediah Lincoln and Fanny Smith Cleveland) married Samuel Henry Chandler 10 Oct 1845 in Bristl Co., MA (Taunton or Attleborough) not in Bridgeport, CT. I've ran into a few people who also have the Bridgeport, CT location and I was wondering where that info came from. Sarah and Samuel Chandler are my ancestors. As for as I know, neither one of them ever lived in or near Bridgeport.

Samuel was the son of Benjamin Chandler and Mary Cobb, both of MA. I have that Samuel was born in Wrentham, MA in 1824. Sarah, I believe, was born in 1825 in Taunton, MA. Samuel and Sarah lived in MA until some point between 1853-1860 when they moved down to CT, first to Franklin then on to Norwich where their youngest son was born in 1860. I do have some vital record information from Norwich, CT stating this Samuel Henry Chandler (of MA) was married to Sarah H. Lincoln. These records have death info (1899, Norwich), etc.. Sarah died in 1906 in Norwich. Both are buried in Yantic Cemetery in Norwich.

I'd really love to know where the Bridgeport, CT info is from. Let me know if you have a reference for that. I'm not positive, but I believe there was another Samuel Henry Chandler, born about the same year who may have lived in the Bridgeport, CT area. As far as I know, this is NOT the Samuel who married Sarah Hodges Lincoln.

Genealogy of the Barney Family in America, p.164: 471. Mary Barney, daughter of Giles and Tabitha (Dring) Barney, was born in Newport, R.I.; died in Freetown, Mass. She married, January 6, 1778 at Newport, Ambrose Cleveland of Freetown, the ceremony being performed by the Rev. Gardner Thurston. Ambrose Cleveland was born in 1755 in Freetown; died in 1840, age 85 at Freetown. He was the son of Ambrose and Deturah (Briggs) Cleveland. He was a ship-builder; during the Revolution he remained a Loyalist and, with his father, went to St. John, New Brunswick until the war was over.

GBFA p.76: 170. Giles Barney, who seems to be the son of Israel and Mary (Dring) Barney, was born about 1725 at Newport, R.I.; died there about February 1783. He married, November 15, 1750 at Little Compton, R.I., Tabitha Dring, the ceremony being performed by the Rev. Jonathan Ellis. Tabitha Dring was born October 2, 1725 at Little Compton, the daughter of Thomas and Sarah (Searle) Dring, Jr. ... In 1763 Giles Barney bought property in Newport. In the 1774 Colonial Census, Giles Barney of Newport was head of a family consiting [consisting] of 2 males over 16, 3 females over 16 and 1 female under 16. His will, dated December 3, 1782, proved March 3, 1783 at Newport (Newport Wills, I-89) mentions his wife Tabitha, son Daniel, daughters Sarah Munro, Hannah Barney, and Mary Cleveland. No births recorded. His known children: Sarah, Daniel, Hannah, and Mary.

Giles Barney's will, dated 3 Dec 1782, proved 3 March 1783 at Newport, mentions wife, son Daniel, daughters Sarah Munro, Hannah Barney, Mary Cleveland; no births recorded.

According to "Little Compton Families," by Benjamin Franklin Wilbour (Little Compton, Newport Co., R.I., Little Compton Historical Society, 1985), p.245, there was another son, David Barney, b. abt 1760 in Rehoboth, Bristol Co., Mass. [WCB: But I don't believe it.]

I can't believe you got back to me so quickly. I am a descendant of Mary Barney and Ambrose Cleveland. Not only was I interested in the ancestors of Giles Barney, I am extremely interested in any information you may have on his daughter Mary. I lack documentation/verification when it comes to her. I do have that she died sometime after 1807 in Freetown, MA. Mary Barney and Ambrose Cleveland had a number of children, including Fanny Smith Cleveland (1803-1880) who married Nedabiah Lincoln (1782-1843) of Taunton, MA. From that point down, I have a lot of documentation down to present day descendants.

I had not known about any Mayflower links in my tree before I began looking into Mary Barney. The Mayflower Society confirmed all ancestors from Tabitha Dring back to Thomas Rogers and John Alden/Priscilla Mullins of the Mayflower. Mary Barney who married Ambrose Cleveland was the 'weakest link' in my tree, for I was not positive she was the same Mary Barney, daughter of Giles and Tabitha.

You did not mention a David Barney, born abt. 1760 in Rehoboth, MA. I have him as a son of Giles and Tabitha. Not sure where I obtained that info since I do not have all my notes in front of me at this time.

In the meantime, I will go over the info you posted and see if I have any other questions, comments, etc.. I have nothing to add at this point unless you are interested in descendants of Mary Barney and Ambrose Cleveland.

I'm searching for the parents of Giles BARNEY born abt. 1725 in Newport, Rhode Island. He married Tabitha DRING on 15 Nov 1750 in Little Compton, RI. He died Feb 1783 (probably) in Newport, RI. Giles and Tabitha seem to have had at least 4 children, Sarah, Hannah, Mary and David. Daughter Mary (b. abt. 1757 in Newport) may have married Ambrose CLEVELAND (1755-1840) of Freetown, MA.

I'm a bit confused when it comes to descendants of Jacob BARNEY and I'm trying to figure out if Giles is a descendant. His father may have been Israel BARNEY, a descendant of Jacob's, and possible husband of a Mary DRING.

If anyone can provide info on Giles or his possible father Israel Barney please let me know. Israel may have been a son of Israel, who may have been a son of Jacob.

Vashti Aldrich was living with the family of Mary Ann (Compton) Carlton on the 1850 census of Wabash Co., Ill., aged 12. On her marriage certificate her mother is listed as Mary Ann Compton and her father as "Aldrich." Mary Ann Compton Carlton was the daughter of John Compton and Jane (Barney) Compton; Jane (Barney) Compton was the daughter of Capt. William and Jerusha (Jefferson) Barney -- i.e., the sister of Vashti Barney who md. Jonathan Aldrich.

I do have a copy of the marriage entry in the books at Randolph county, Illinois. Thank you. My husband and I went there and found it but it didn't give us any further information. I would be interested though in anything you have on descendants. I have not been able to piece together the link between Vashti Aldrich, my husband's ancestor and Vashti Barney Aldrich. I presume she must be her grandmother but have nothing to link the two other than the name. My assumption is that her mother was not married as I have no record of an Aldrich son born to Vashti Barney Aldrich. I'm holding my breath!!!

Looking for information about my g-g-grandfather, Charles Barney, b. Sept 1821, in Ohio or Michigan.

He may have served in the 24th Michigan Regiment (Company E), but I cannot verify that.

He married Helene Marcoux, b. April 1864, Quebec, Canada, (date and place of marriage unknown) and had two children, Helen M., b. 24 June 1883, Evansville, Indiana, and Charles N. Barney, b. November 1886, Woonsocket, Rhode Island.

In the 1900 U.S. Census, Charles was living in Woonsocket, RI, with his family, and worked as a nightwatchman. I cannot find any further information about him and have checked both the Rhode Island and Massachusetts State Archives for death records (after the 1900 census), but have not had any success.

If anyone has any information about Charles Barney, I would greatly appreciate it.

Notes for EDWARD BERNIER/BARNEY:
On 4-10-1925 Edward was sentened to 20 years to life for the murder and second dregree murder of his wife and
infant daughter. Following an argument with his wife, he struck her and set fire to their aparment above a garage,
in Fort Covington, with a kerosene lantern. The wife and child died from the burn injuries they sustained.
On 4-19-1935 Edward was take from prison to Bomay to visit his father, William Barney, who was critically ill.
Two other young daughters survive.

Notes for EDWARD BERNIER/BARNEY:
On 4-10-1925 Edward was sentened to 20 years to life for the murder and second dregree murder of his wife and
infant daughter. Following an argument with his wife, he struck her and set fire to their aparment above a garage,
in Fort Covington, with a kerosene lantern. The wife and child died from the burn injuries they sustained.
On 4-19-1935 Edward was take from prison to Bomay to visit his father, William Barney, who was critically ill.
Two other young daughters survive.

Donald William Barney 1924 - 2008 Son of Earl & Ruth Barney of Northville, New York Don Barney, owner of Barney's Family Restaurant (1979-1993), died suddenly on April 12, 2008. He was also a member of Chef's de Cuisine. Don proudly served in the Navy during World War II and Korea. His mother had to sign his enlistment since he was only 17 at the time, it was very soon after December 7, 1941. He served on the USS Butner and the USS Whetstone. He was a member of the Long Beach Optimist Club for many years and served as Lt. Governor. He was on the Advisory Board of the Bixby Knolls PBIA. Don was very active in community services and was on the Police Chief's Advisory Committee following the Long Beach civil unrests and was on the Board of Directors of the Long Beach Transit for 8 years and was also involved in local politics for many years. Don leaves behind his wife of over 60 years, Mary Barney; and his son, Don Jr. (Cathy) of Huntington Beach; daughter, Kathy (Bob) Simpson of Lakewood; and his adoring grandchildren, Ronnie and David Williams, Michael (Mary) and Jeffrey (Kamerin) Barney, Robbie (Ashlie) Simpson; and his one and only grandaughter, Katie Simpson; and great grandchildren, Meagan, CJ and Makayla Barney and Kylie Williams. He also leaves behind his beloved brothers, Bill and Clarence Gagne; and sister, Clara Capadiferro; and many nieces and nephews in upstate New York, Northville, where he had many fond memories and would visit there as often as he could. Don was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Sadie and brother, Charles, all of New York. Mrs. Minnie Barney, 76, a former Adams County resident died at the Duke Rest Home, Bowersville, Ohio, on Thursday of last week after an extended illness.

Surviving are her husband, A. O. Barney and a daughter, Mrs. Pearl Wallen, both of Xenia; six brothers, Carey, Herman and John Tolle, of Peebles; Jesse, of New Burlington, Dorsey of Waverly; and Charles of Rarden; two sisters, Mrs. Vina George of Wilmington and Mrs. Millie Barney of Lynchburg.

Funeral services were conducted Sunday at 2:00 p.m. at the Wylie Funeral Home, Sinking Springs, with Rev. D. C. Disbennet in charge and burial made in the Locust Grove Cemetery.

She was married to a physician with the improbable name of John Babst Blake. (It was probably meant to be Baptist, not Babst.) In 1920, they lived in Boston, MA with their 6 children, the eldest of whom was just 19. She and Babst must have married late since they were each 54 yrs. old in 1920.
According to her passport application in 1922, she had traveled to Europe in 1906 and 1910. I also found that she and her husband traveled to Europe in 1932.

I have an original carte de visite photograph of “Belle Barney”, which I’d like to get back to descendants or family members. Photo was taken in Fredericksburg (Spotsylvania Co.) VA, and she looks to be about age 18.

I found Belle with her parents in the 1870 census of Huguenot (Powhatan Co.) VA and in 1880, in Spotsylvania Co., VA. In 1870, she was 2 and in 1880, she was 11. Parent’s name in 1870 look to be Jas. N. Barney (age 51) and wife Nannie D. (52). In 1880, names appear to be Joseph M. (age 61) and wife Ann S. (42).

My ggg grandparents were Lewis Barney and Mary ? from Canada. I will try to make contact. I am interested in Moses
Barney and am searching for his father. In the 1870
federal census he is shown living with 50 year old Adaline
Barney. Moses at the time was 13 with a sister Lucinda
age 16 and another brother Aaron age 15. Any info on
Moses or his family would be appreciated..

Col. Benjamin Barney

I ran across a typed, hand bound family tree book that was published in 1967, and includes a picture of Col. Benjamin Barney. This book states that he was born on Sept. 4, 1795, in Berkshire, Mass. The first of his ancestry in America, in the paternal line was William Barney, about 250 years ago, from Ireland. From this book, I cannot tell if it was 250 years before the Col. was born, or 250 years before the book was written.

Does anyone have any information on the ancestry of Col. Benjamin Barney? Any help is appreciated.
