Re: Edward Barnfield & Sarah Blackwell of Gloucestershire

I have a lot of information about Edward Barnfield. He was born 12 March 1748 in the parish of Minchinhampton, Gloucestershire (probably in the small town of Nailsworth, but not recorded as such since it wasn’t a parish at that time). He was the illegitimate child of Ann Barnfield. The father was almost certainly called Holliday, for Ann records the child’s name as Edward Holliday Barnfield in the parish register. I have found no other references thereafter to him as Edward Holliday Barnfield, only just plain Edward Holliday. Edward married Hester Archer on 25 July 1774 in the parish church in Horsley, Gloucestershire. (A few miles from his home in modern Nailsworth). At that time he was described as a weaver. He could not sign his name in the register. His father-in-law, Matthew Archer left a large property (Newmarket House & surrounding land) to Edward Barnfield & his wife on his death in 1784. She died 16 December 1789, leaving him quite a wealthy man. Edward re-married Sarah Blackwell, the daughter of a wealthy clothier and property owner, John ‘Gentleman’ Blackwell (1736-1824), six weeks later on 10 February 1790 in the parish church of Avening. By time he was able to sign his name and describes himself as a clothier.
A few years later he bought the neighbouring estate of Lot House and its surrounding land. The Gloucestershire Record Office has details of various property deals he was involved in – buying and selling properties. He died 11 April 1814, a wealthy man despite his inauspicious entry into this world. He had five children – Sarah, who married Thomas Gardner a grocer from Cainscross, near Stroud, Gloucestershire, Edward Blackwell Barnfield, who emigrated to the US, Phebe, who married Enos Dyer, Charlotte, who married Thomas Wall, Benjamin and who married Sarah Foxwell and had a butcher’s shop in Cheltenham.

I have a lot more information. If you interested please contact me at raymondcook97@yahoo.co.uk. If anyone knows more about Edward Barnfield, I would be interested to hear from them.

Raymond Cook
The information I have is that she did not marry. However, her sister Sarah married Edward Barnfield in 1790. I have quite a bit of information about them and their descendants, if you are interested.

I am trying to track Edward's Father and grandfather I think that his father could be William who married a Joyce Foxwell so probably a relation of Sarah Foxwell who married Edward and Sarah's son
My grandfather Allan Barnfield had a profdessional geneologist research the Barnfield family in the 1950's and I have lots of wills and entries in parish records back to 1500's but unfortunatley there are gaps and it is all out of order so I am trying to put it together. Therefore any information on the pre Edward line would help enormously as I can then track records through.

Thanks, I knew Edward had a 1st wife, but I never knew her name. And thanks for full dates, where I only had years. And the correction of Newmarket instead of Nailsworth for the 1797 Benjamin. I have two wives and 3 sons for Edward Foxwell Barnfield, but not their wives or descendants. I would like to share data if you are willing. I have lots of Blackwell cousins, but am not a Blackwell or Barnfield myself. I did come to the UK and visit Horsley, Nailsworth and Avening loking for Blackwell data, but unfortunately my time was very limited. Sarah BLACKWELL Barnfield's older brother, Enoch, was my gggm's step-father. You can reach me directly via capane "AT" verizon.net.

I have from WILLIAMS census data (Wilson Co., TN) a Georgie Etta WILLIAMS/SEAT (born abt 1862/1864 TN/IL; died 1947 TX) showing up as an orphan (1870 & 1880 US Census). Georgie Etta SEAT is my great grandmother. I am looking to track down her parents and past.

From a 1997 query found here http://www.tngenweb.org/wilson/queries/wilsar01.htm I have

"Jay L. Hallaron Sun Jul 27 12:36:04 1997
Researching Barn(s)fields that married in Wilson Co.
(1) Richard Barnsfield m. Ann Eliza WILLIAMS,
(2) Robert Barnsfield m. Telitha Ann SEATT,
(3) Ann Barnsfield m. William Thomas SEATT,
(4) Martha Barnsfield m. Hiram C WOODARD,
(5) William Barnsfield m. Mary MERCHANT,
(6) George Barnsfield m. Polly WILLIAMS,
(7) John Barnsfield m. Martha J JACKSON, and
(8) Louisa Barnsfield m. Joseph E LAIN.
Trying to identify the parents of Barnsfield spouses and parentage of several of the Barnsfields."

My "Nettie Jane WILLIAMS" married a "Thomas SEATT" in 1859, Wilson County, Tennessee, please see attached *.jpg file. Nettie J WILLIAMS had a sister Eliza A WILLIAMS (1850 US Census).

My current assumption is that there was a 'tragedy' in one of the WILLIAMS sisters marriages that resulted in Georgia Etta WILLIAMS/SEAT becoming an orphan.

QUESTION: Is there a Barn(s)field researcher that has any information of this collection of families in Wilson Co., TN circa 1860 that could clarify what I have found to-date?

SamuelKey-at-comcast.net

I am trying to find information on my Great Grandfather Richard George Barnfield, the only information on them come from my Granfather's birth certificate (William John Barnfield)from 1907. Richard is listed as a Coal Miner, they lived at Bodwys Ysaradyfodws Pontypridd Wales. The only marriage between a Margret Morgan and Richard Barnfield I can find is in Cheltenham in 1905, I know miners must have moved about but I need some good links to find Margret and Richard in the 1901 census. Any help would be appreciated.

I'm not related to Sarah or Edward, but there is a connection. As you probably know, Sarah had an older brother, Enoch Blackwell who came to the US with his children and a number of his siblings in 1804.
My 3rd ggm was Sarah Lugg (1771 - 1867), Enoch's 2nd wife. My ggm, Ann Clinch (1804 - 1872), her mother, and father, Thomas Clinch, apparently came over from Bristol to Philadelphia on the same ship, and presumably knew each other back in Avening. Sarah Lugg m. Enoch 2nd and has 2 children, Mary Blackwell (1806 - 1863) and Enoch Blackwell (1814 - 1884). Ann and Mary married Campbell brothers, nephews of Sarah Lugg's 3rd husband, John Campbell (1761/61 - 1854). Campbell reunions were held in Nelson, Tioga Co., PA (and have resumed). Lots of Blackwells, including those from Morris Twp., in Tioga Co, PA, and from Bradford Co., PA came to them. As did lots of Luggs. I've met many desc. and have been in touch with a number of researchers of these families. I'm putting up a website with the minutes and programs from the old reunions and trying to figure out who all the attendees were. I already have lots of Blackwells in my database, but am hoping for more info.
A couple of years ago I took a trip to Gloucestershire. Loved the church in Avening. I also stopped in Horsley, Shortwood and Nailsworth looking for things that might be of interest to my Blackwell cousins or researchers. Didn't have time to research much, but did get photos.
Please contact me at bill.thompson@wtassoc.com I would appreciate some Barnfield data, and may have something you would like. Happy to share.

I have found Eugenia on the 1881 census in Lambeth, her surname has been spelt as Bamfield, in 1891 Eugenia is using her 2nd name Alice and is at her fathers Inn in Somerton Somerset, in 1901 (using Eugenia) she is employed as a servant in Hastings, I have searched for a marriage or death for Eugenia up to 1925 but am unable to find anything or perhaps overlooked the information. I would appreciate any info if this name rings any bells. Many Thanks Wendy.

Does anyone have a William Barnfield, I have no idea the area he came from. He married in London, England in 1867 to Lucy Holman. Lucy died the following year, so William could have remarried. William worked as a servant/butler in London and Beaulieu, Hampshire. Any info appreciated.

Edward Barnfield & Sarah Blackwell are my 3 x great grandparents. I am descended from Benjamin Barnfield (b1797 Nailsworth Glos d1877 Cheltenham Glos UK) who was a brother of the Edward B (Blackwell) Barnfield you mention, who emigrated to the US. There were also 3 sisters and my brother is in contact with a descendant of one of them (in UK). Where do you fit in?
