POW/MIA Korean War BARNHART

I am searching for the family of a soldier who was killed in the Korea War. When he entered service he gave York County, Pennsylvania as his home of record.

Soldier: DALE GERALD BARNHART
Born: 1927
Date of loss:September 7, 1951 KIA
US52074074
L Co 35th Inf Rgt, 25th Inf Division

When the Korean War ended the enemy never returned or accounted for over 8,000 of our servicemen. They died in their hands. That was over 50 years ago. Since that time DNA has been perfected and also they are recovering remains in North Korea. Our government is obligated to return those remains to the proper family. DNA samples have been obtained from most of the families of these missing soldiers. For various reasons some families have not been located.

When the remains are recovered and identified they will be returned to the family for proper burial. I am just an old (76 years) Combat Veteran out of the Korean War and thankful that I did return. I consider this a very noble cause and I hope that you can help in some way to find this family. For more information on the project you may go to http://www.jpac.pacom.mil/. My part in the program is to match up the lost families with the proper agency.

I will be grateful for any assistance in locating this family.

Harold Davis
40th Infantry Division
Korea ’52-‘53
910-791-2333
hgdavis@bellsouth.net
I have not been able to find any information on Sarah, and not much on Dewitt. Marriage, death, birth....nada.
Interestingly, I did find a Dewitt Castle with a very similar date of birth living in a rooming house much later in life.
My Barnharts originated in Germany and settled in Union County, PA for a while; eventually going west to Ohio and Illinois. I am a descendant of Johan "Matthias" Bernhardt who married Anna Margaretha Bugel and they had six children. The spelling of the last name changed with their children who were: Lorentz, Matthias, William Henry, Magdelena, Margaret and George...all born in PA but died in Ohio. I have a pretty good file on them and their wives and siblings that I'd be more than happy to share. My great grandmother was Nora Xenia Barnhart who was born in 1880 in Illinois. Her parents were Franklin Stewart Barnhart and Julia Ann Smith. I'm looking to connect with anyone who thinks they might be connected to this family. Feel free to email me anytime.

Julius A. Barnhardt Burial Place

I am looking for the burial place and any other information on the
following person. If anyone has any cemetery records from the
Civil War and would take the time to check them, I would greatly
appreciate it. Particularly old hospital records from that time
since on his muster rolls it states "place, date and cause of death not
reported", but further on it states he died "at hospital time unknown".
So I have been checking any mention of old hospital records that
I can find in the hopes of finding out more about him. He is the
brother of my great, great grandfather.

Here is what I know about him.

Julius A. Barnhardt
born: ??/??/1843 (Rowan Co., N..C. ??)
the son of John S. Barnhardt and Delilah (Delia) Duke

died: before 1/1/1864 (where ??)
buried: ??

Wounded at Sharpsburg, MD 9/17/1862.
(Could his death been war injury related??)

Julius enlisted into Co. G, 6th Regiment N.C. State Troops in
Rowan County, N.C. at age 19, 7/9/1862. Wounded at Sharpsburg, MD
on 9/17/1862. Company muster roll dated 11-12/1862 states that
he was "absent sick since 12/26/1862". Died prior to 1/1/1864.
Place, date and cause of death not reported, however according
to muster rolls in the Rowan Co., N.C. library he died
"at hospital time unknown". Efforts to find out which hospital
Julius was in and thus possibly move closer to finding out where
he is buried have so far proved unfruitful!

If you can help, I would be forever indebted.

Thanks in advance...

Barney... barneyb@salisbury.net
I suppose we should start a support group of some kind as it seems to be a problem with all Barnhart lines...haha
Anyway, I noticed a William Franklin Barnhart pop up in some of the posts and although it is a different area I also have a William Franklin. I do know the Barnharts like to pass down names so I just found it curious.

Charles McDOUGAL/McDOUGALD 16 Apr 1879.

IGI's have a birth & baptism in 1813 for Jacob Redford BARNHART in Cornwall, Stormont, Ontario and cite his parents as Jacob and Catherine BARNHART. Other IGI's cite a marriage for Jacob Redford, c1835 to a Julianna ROMBOUGH and christenings in Cornwall for the children of Jacob BARNHART & Julianna ROMBOUGH including Wm. Oscar 1837, Peter James 1839, Maria Catherine 1840 and Marcus George 1845.

I believe Jacob is related to my GGG-Grandmother Mercy DAILEY nee BARNHART, b. c1800 in Stormont Co., Ontario. The name Redford appears in Mercy's family with a son Jacob Redford and a grandson Asaph Redford. Mercy, often mis-spelled/mis-transcribed as Mary, died in 1872 in St. Croix Co., WI at age 72 according to her headstone but her age varies from 1805+/-10 in censuses. Mercy's parentage has not been determined as yet. Mercy's daughter Jane E. DAILEY married Ebenezar BARNHART about 1840 and they lived in Osnabruck, Stormont Co., Ontario.

I interested in learning what connection there is between Mercy and Jacob Redford BARNHART. I am also interested in learning more of Jacob R.'s descendants. Thank you for any assistance you can share!

Do you have any record of a Jacob Barnhart b. in Vermont, in early 1800's? Married a Phebe Sedore. (Her family originally was from New York.) Had two sons, Noah and Williams b. 1844, 1846 who were born in Canada. Jacob died in the spring of 1853 in Canada.

Any information would be appreciated.

I am looking for any information on Christiana Barnhart. I know very little about her other than what I placed in the subject line and ...

- she eventually relocated to Clarence, New York where hse had a son, Jeremiah Barnhart (b. 1833) and possibly a daughter, Esther Barnhart.
- I do not know if Barnhart is her maiden name or a married name as I have not found a marriage record.
- she had two more children with John Winn: Silas D. Winn (b. 1838 in Port Colborne, ON) and Elizabeth Winn (b. 1841 in Port Colborne, ON).
- again, I am not sure if she and John Winn were married or not as I haven't found a marriage record for this 'union' either.

If I could find a starting point for this woman, it would be great! If anyone has any information for Christiana Barnhart, I would sure like to hear from you. My thanks in advance.

Regards,
Heather Holdgate
Whitby, Ontario Canada

George Barnard (Dorset, Bennington County, Vermont)

I am the first Barnhart from my line to travel west (1971) as far as I can tell. My recent descendants all were from Wisconsin (5 generations).

I believe that my family name was "Barnard" in Vermont and was changed to Barnhart when George Barnhart (1828-1858) and a group of friends from Vermont traveled to Wisconsin to obtain land through the Land Grant process in 1850. I have traced George the Wisconsin pioneer back to Vermont, and believe that he is the son of a George Barnard who lived in Dorset, Bennington County, Vermont (1800-?).

I find the name change puzzling, and can only speculate why the name was changed. The name Barnard seems to be British and considering George lived in a time and place (Vermont) where the British may have become despised --the Revolutionary War and the War of 1812 -- perhaps a good German/Scandinavian name was chosen by George when he left Vermont. Another possibility is that the group of pioneers he was surrounded by in Wisconsin was Scandinavian or German and his name was spelled Barnhart by his neighbors and he decided to keep it? Perhaps George the Wisconsin census person in 1850 spelled his name Barnhart (instead of Barnard) and George decided to keep this spelling for his name. I am seeking birth and marriage records for George and Henrietta Woodard (his wife) in Vermont that will verify my contention that a name change occurred. I also am seeking more information on George Barnard (Senior) in Vermont. I believe that he was born in Vermont around 1800, but have no records to show his birth or his parents names.

Any thoughts or information to assist me in my search would be appreciated.

Kenneth Barnhart
I'm looking for the parents of George Washington Barnhart b. 1823 d. 1880 in Pa. Buried at Orrstown. He married Sarah Ann Harvey b. 1830 in Franklin Co., d/o Mr.? Harvey Mrs.? (Stake)Harvey. I know that they lived in an area of Amberson Twp, Franklin Co known as Mill Run. According to a series of books (Harry Foreman Collection " Conococheague Headwaters of Amberson Valley" book #5) George and Sarah were the last Barnharts to own land there in 1858. There were 3 other Barnharts that resided at or near there before George. Peter wife Rachael Barnhart were the first around 1800. Then John Barnhart was included in the 1804 tax list with Peter Rachael. In 1816 there was a Daniel Nancy Barnhart that were listed as land owners at or near the home place on Mill Run. There's also mention of a Susanne Barnhart marr. to Thomas Sheilds, a Anne Barnhart marr. to John Lewis. A Barnhart Weirich who lived at Ft. McCord was a relative. ( of who I have no idea). Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Jeff Sweger
November 20, 1880, he married Ellen E., a daughter of Levi and Mary Becker, of Jackson Township, the result of the union being four children: L. Nevin, Vertie (deceased), Daisey, and Mabel Matilda. Mr. Barnhart has been a member of the American Mechanics’ Association and is adherent of the Lutheran Church.

Taken from the book, “History of York County, Illustrated 1886” by John Gibson, Historical Editor
John Clymer Barnhart s/o /Samuel & Marey Martha Barnhart

I recently posted a message regarding John Clymer Barnhart - well I found him as the son of Samuel Barnhart and Mary Martha Byers. The problem I am having is when I get further back in this line. Samuel to John and Elizabeth Row; then William (b. 1781) and Catherine Rumbaugh - the information I have found shows William as the son of Johann (b. 3 Mar 1746)and Anna Schmidt but when I look deeper he is not listed as their child and I cannot find any documents to verify it. Can anyone help me?

Charlotte C. I believe Rebecca, born in 1820, was Charlotte's daughter. Rebecca named her daughter, my G Grandmother, Charlotte, presumably after her Grandmother. Naming girls for their maternal grandmothers is a tradition in my family.

Any Information about Charlotte C.

Have census evidence (1900 Westmoreland Cnty, Hempfield Twnship PA) of a Clymer Barnhart, a widower, living with his father Samuel and mother Mary and family along with his sons James (possibly my grandfather) b 1893, Edgar b 1896 and Sam b 1898. According to the information I have Clymer changed his name to John C. Barnhart and moved to Colorado in the late 19teens with his son James leaving the rest of the family in PA. Trying to verify that this is my line - the names and birth dates are right. Am looking for information regarding Clymer's wife, the mother of his sons and the rest of the family. There appears to be some sort of rift with the rest of the family because no one appears to want to lay claim to this branch of the Barnhart family. Can someone help me?

Several years ago, I posted the following information. I am still searching and reposting in hopes that some researcher has diligently kept looking for their ancestors and found a match with my search. Thank you, Betty

Interested in your Hemphill-Barnhart connection in Butler county, PA.

Have info of where Alfred B. Barnhart and brother Harvey Barnhart were in the household of Gabriel Pontious and his wife, Mary Barnhart Pontious in the federal census of 1850 of Butler county.

Found where Abraham Barnhart married one of their daughters, Catherine and have to presume that she died and the grandparents had the boys at least in 1850. The 1880 census lists a 'Sarah', age 20, sister with a brother on Alfred Barnhart's enumeration in Venango county, Oil Creek Township, Sherman Well post office.
Alfred later marries Percila (sic) abt 1864 following his service in the 62nd Infantry Regiment of PA. Hemphill is found on the marriage application of one their daughters' Susan A. Barnhart in Frontier county, Nebraska. Am quite sure that they are the one and the same. The information that I have researched supports my conclusion.

Do you have additional info on the Hemphill connection that might reveal the parentage of Percila/Percilla/Priscilla?
William - Mary Barnhart --- Ohio

William Barnhart b. ABT 1821, in OH. It is noted that his father's name was also William Barnhart.

I was down in Ohio last summer and did extensive research at both the OHS Library in Columbus, and the Washington Co. Genealogy Library in Marietta.

I was able to obtain a marriage certificate from the Washington Co. Probate Court that shows:

Mary Johnson (from Salem Twp., age 19 yrs. old) married William Barnhart (from Lawrence Twp.) 24 Feb 1842, Washington Co., OH (Mary b. 30 Dec 1823 d. 5 Mar 1921)

They had the following children: (plus, 2 children who died in infancy)
William and Jasper (twins) born 18 Jan 1845 (It was Jasper's obituary that listed his birth place as Monroe Co.
William d. 18 Mar 1915 (married Lydia S. Haney 14 April 1869)
Jasper d. 3 Jan 1916 (both served in the Civil War) (Married Elizabeth Shuster 18 March 1874)

Rebecca b. b. 1848 d. 27 Jan 1907 (married Henry Perry 7 July 1864)
Mary Jane b. 18 Nov 1849 d. 15 Aug 1909 (married John Emge 13 Aug 1870)
Elizabeth (Betsey) Ann b. ABT 1853 d. BEF 1921 (married Jerard Rife 18 Mar 1967)
Sylvester b. ABT 1854 d. BET 1870 - 1921
Sarah E. b. ABT 1856 d. BEF 1921
Caroline b. ABT 1858 d. BEF 1921

According to Mary's Obituary:
William died, in 1857. "Killed when in a fight on the Ohio River above Sistersville. He was struck on the back of the neck with an oar and died instantly."

(Mary eventually, moved to the Adams Twp. area, Washington County upon William's death, and remarried - 1860 Robert McCormick -- probably in Monroe Co. OH)

I have found a William Barnhart listed in the 1820 OH Census for Salem Twp., which could be William's father. I do not find him in Salem in 1830 - there is one listed in Grandview in 1830. I also do not find William and Mary Barnhart in either the 1840 or 1850 censuses. Mary shows up a widow in 1860 in Grandview Twp.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Julie Witkowski (jfwski@hotmail.com)
