This is also my family. Henry Clay was my dad's grandfather and Claude was my dad's father, although I do not see him on your list of children. Claude was the twin brother of Clyde. I can fill in some of your spots if you're still researching.

Elijah Winfield Barnhill - b. 1872

My great grandfather was Elijah Winfield Barnhill and was born November 9, 1872. His father was John Jefferson Barnhill and was born 1844, in Guys, McNairy, TN. He married Amanda Clark of Marthaville, LA. I have a family tree, reference book that was put together by family members and sold or given out at a family reunion in Marthaville around 1995. This book has a section on Henry Clay's family, along with many others. Do you have this Barnhill reference book or have you seen it?

Re: James Barnhill18 aug 1780

Josiah Boone, Jr. was born 1758 in Berks County, Pennsylvania. His first wife’s name was Persis Henton. She was born 1754 in Chester County, Pennsylvania. Two of their children, Hannah Persis and Ruth Ann married two Barnhill brothers, James and William. Hannah Boone was born November 1, 1786 at Fort Boonesborough, Kentucky and Ruth Ann was born February 10th, 1788, probably at Fort Boonesborough also. James Barnhill was born 18 August, 1870 at Quaker Creek Settlement in Orange County, North Carolina. He married Hannah December 13th, 1804 in Shelby County, Kentucky. William was born October 4th, 1785 in Orange County, North Carolina. He married Ruth Ann on February 22, 1810, also in Shelby County. Both of these Barnhills were sons of Robert Barnhill (b. June 11, 1758 in Quaker Creek Settlement, Orange County, North Carolina. He died February, 1819 in Henry County, Kentucky and is buried in the Barnhill-Bayes cemetery at Ballardsville, Kentucky with his wife, Rachel Ann (Hooper) Barnhill. James and Hannah had nine children, Rachel, Mary Ann, Persis, Persis Hannah, Elizabeth, Robert, Jeramiah, Joseph and James. William and Ruth Ann had seven children, Rachel, Deborah, Hiram, Nancy, Mary, Sarah, and James. James and Hannah Persis Barnhill are buried in the Barnhill-Boone cemetry in Philpot, Kentucky. William and Ruth Ann Barnhill are buried in the Barnhill family cemetery in Oldham County, Kentucky. The aforementioned Josiah Boone, Jr.’s second wife was Eleanor Ellender (Bryan) Linville Adams. She is the sister of Rebecca Boone, Daniel Boone's wife. She was first married to William Lineville at the age of 12. After the death of her husband and son, she then married Hugh Adams. They had five children, One of which was named Alice Francis Adams. After the death of Hugh Adams, Eleanor married Josiah Boone, Jr. Information presented here comes from a direct descendant (and certified genealogist) of Alice and Robert Barnhill, Jr. a brother of James and William. Robert and Alice were married April 6th, 1811 at Painted Rock, Boone’s Station, Shelby County, Kentucky. FYI The three brothers mentioned here had a fourth brother named “Joseph”, who married Rebecca Hopkins.
As a result of several common factors between William Barnhill, father of Robert Allen Barnhill, and Hardin Roberts Barnhill, it appeared that the latter was his father. However, after a fresh look at the limited information on William Barnhill, I'm now skeptical. So, the question remains as to whom was William's father. In reviewing information on Family Search (LDS), it was discovered that a Peter Barnhill was married to a Ulisa Harper in Marshall County, KY on Apr 20, 1850. William and Rebecca were married there a little later on Jul 24, 1851. While I've not been sucessful in identifying the parentage of Peter Barnhill, any information discovered on him might eventually help determine the parentage of William. It has been reported in this forum that William may have lived in Claiborne County, Tennessee prior to moving to Graves County, Kentucky. I vaguely remember seeing an early Barnhill listed in a book or record of Claiborne County. However, Barnhills in Claiborne County have been basically non-existant, except for me. I'm a transplant. If I find anything in the records here, I'll post it.

Regarding William Barnhill and Rebecca Haley, they were probably married in Marshall County, Kentucky (rather than Marshall County, Missouri) as it is located next to Graves County, Kentucky. They are the parents of Robert Allen Barnhill of Mississippi County, Missouri. William, and some of his brothers (James, Thomas Hardin, and George Washington), had moved from Hickman County, Tennessee to Graves County, Kentucky. Later, some of them relocated to Mississippi County, Missouri. It appears that William's parents are Hardin Roberts Barnhill and Margaret Shelby of Hickman County, Tennessee. The parents of Hardin Roberts Barnhill are James Barnhill and Winnie Roberts who moved to Hickman County, Tennessee in about 1806, after living for a while in Georgia having moved there from South Carolina.

I know your main line is the Roberts, but I would like to share some information with you and see if what I have that was passed down by word of mouth mostly, matches what you show to be children of Robert Allen BARNHILL & Rebecca w. JONES, or shall I say one in particular.

Do you have any kind of documentation about Luther Talmage "Luke" Barnhill? I know from my grandmothers bible that she and Luke were married in about 1908. Their children were Robert Allen who only live a few days (dob: 12/25/1910; died 12/30/1910) per Bible record.

Robert Allen Barnhill
Birth: 25 Dec 1910
Death: 30 Dec 1910
Walnut Ridge, Lawrence, Arkansas, USA

Luther Talmage Barnhill
Birth: 1890
Anniston, Mississippi, Missouri, USA
Death: 13 Feb 1911
Walnut Ridge, Lawrence, Arkansas, USA

Timeline
1890 Birth, Anniston, Mississippi, Missouri, USA
1908 Age: 18 - Marriage to Nellie Mae McMillen
1910 Age: 20
Residence: Campbell, Lawrence, Arkansas
* 1910 United States Federal Census
Death 1911 Feb 13 Per Bible records. Age: 21

This is my uncle:
Almos Edgar Barnhill
Birth: 10 Feb 1909
Charleston, Mississippi, Missouri, USA
Death: 3 Apr 1991
Decatur, Macon, Illinois, USA

I am attaching a picture of him and my grandmother. I do not know what Luke looked like as my grandfather (2nd marriage for Nellie) was VERY jealous of any mention of Luke. In fact my grandmothers father & mother raised Almos with their younger children.

Please let me know if this information might match with something you have about Luke.

Carolyn Ramsey
jramsey74@comcast.net
The following information is what I have on the Carroll Co., Ohio family of Robert Barnhill, Jr.
1.Robert Barnhill - b.?, d.1819, Henry Co, KY; Married to Rachel ?
2.Robert Barnhill, Jr. -b.1/12/1774 in Ireland,
d.4/18/1852
in Fox Twnshp, Carroll Co., Ohio; Married to Elizabeth
Carter, Jefferson Co., Ohio 1/20/1807 - b.1782 in Germany.
3.1 Mary Elizabeth - b.1804(?)in Carrollton,
Carroll Co., Ohio d. bef.1850; Married to John
Masterson Bruce on 4/3/1828 in Jefferson Co. Ohio.
J.M. Bruce was born on 9/5/1804 in Ohio and died in
Spencer Co., Indiana 12/3/1880
3.2 George - b. ?, d. ?
3.3 Robert - b. 3/3/1813
3.4 William - b. 1819
3.5 Uriah - b. 1821
3.6 James - b. 1823
3.7 John - b. 1836(?)I believe this should be 1816 -
John Barnhill is listed in the 1840 census as being
20/30 years old - George & J.M. Bruce 30/40 years.
The parent, Robert Jr. listed as 60/70 years with 3
children 20/30 years and 1 15/20 years at home. This
would account for all of the sons listed above.

John Masterson Bruce and Mary Elizabeth Barnhill had 6 children all born in Carroll Co. Ohio. They are:
1.Robert M. - b. 1/7/1829
2.Nancy Ann - b. 1/18/1832
3.Thomas Carter - b. 6/22/1835, d.11/29/1914
4.John R.- b. 1/22/1837
5.George D. - b.1839
6.James Robert - b.1842

Thomas Carter Bruce moved to Warrick Co. Indiana and indications are that some siblings and Barnhills moved there as well.
Land records can be found for both J.M. Bruce and some Barnhills in the 1830's & 40's in the Jefferson Co. area of Ohio.
Some of this information has been verified through census, marriage and land records and some has been found through web research and message board postings.
I am a descendant of this family from my mother back paternally through Thomas Carter Bruce. I am currently researching J.M. Bruce and trying to substantiate his lineage.

I do not follow the Barnhill line - mine is the Roberts line. Just as a note of info, I am so pleased to learn Hardin Barnhill was Hardin Roberts Barnhill and he was named for his grandfather Roberts, who was Hardin Roberts (1740-VA and d 19 May 1789) in Greenville District SC. I show Hardin Barnhill's mother as Winnie Rachel Roberts and that she died in TN around 1850. There is a lot published about the Barnhills but if any of you have any information at all or any folk lore about any of the Roberts, I would be most appreciative. Thanks.

Once your information has been received, you should find a common ancestor and link to my data. Our closest ancestor is Robert Barnhill, born 28 Feb, 1769. Good luck, because this is the only website I have used to share my family information. - Stan

Hello,

My grandfather, Douglas Barnhill of Hickman Co.(TN), died back in 2001 leaving me little to no information about his (my) family. I believe his father's name was George Barnhill, and one of his sister's was named Georgia and the other Danny, but that is really all I know.

I realize I have a lot of work to do, and any help would be greatly appreciated. He was a wonderful man and I am very anxious to find out more about where he came from, etc.

Many thanks,

Rachael Barnhill Bragg

I had found the William in Claiborne county, living as a blacksmith (apprentice?) to Daniel Marcum. I have no reason to believe its the same William except for the fact that the age is correct and he was born in TN. He is listed at 19 years old on the 1850 census dated Sept 18. Probably not the same guy that could have married Rebecca in Marshall County less than a year later.

I'm very interested in your sources. Found some undocumented listings for the following children for Hardin Roberts Barnhill and Margaret, but no mention of William:

Elizabeth (1823-)
Alexander (1829-)
James H (1832-1881)
Susan (1834-)
Jasper (1835-)
Thomas Hardin (1839-1927)
Pleasant (1841-1900)
George W (1845-1938)
John P (1847-)

Census records for 1830 and 1840 don't show names of household members. 1830 census shows Hardin Barnhill right next to an elder James Barnhill, living with one female. 1840 census lists one male 1-5 yrs and 1 over 5 and under 10 for Hardin Roberts. Doesnt match the above very well. I'd appreciate any sources you have.

I agree. Especially since later census records still show William Y. living with Francis. What I am most interested in is finding how William Barnhill (born 1831 in TN) fits into the Barnhill family and who his parents were.

1850 census shows a 19 y.o. William living in Claiborne, TN with 9 members of the Marcum family. This may be him if he was moving north towards KY.

BR,
Scott

Hello. I am Alicia Barnhill. I came across your posting and think we might possibly be relatives. My Father is Joe Allen Barnhill. His Father was Edgar(?)Allen Barnhill (we called him Bouncer. He married a Dorothy Frazier(who had a sister Pauline) in Missouri and moved to CA. G-pa had a brother named Jack Barnhill and both lived in the bay area(N.CALI). G-pa Bouncer had three kids (dad, Cheryl Barnhill-now Botsford and Karen Leah Barnhill.. They were originally from Arkansas and Missouri and moved to CA I think in early 40's or 50's. I know ALLEN is a long time family name and I believe there was a Robert Allen that was mentioned. My brother (Charles Allen) has done a little research, but hasn't found much. Dad was born in 1944(I think).I hope this helps and I would love to hear from anybody who has any more info.

Thank you for the info. For other family members who may be reading this:
The enumerator got creative with the spelling. The "other members in the household" included Ivy Barnhill's mother and step-father, J.H. & Rebecca Cotner (not Cattoner)-- his name was John.

Thank you for the response. I agree that William Barnhill and Rebecca Haley were married in Kentucky which is how I had listed the marriage in my prior note. The information came from The Kentucky Marriage Index on this site. Also, their eldest daughter, Elizabeth, appears to have been born in Marshall County, Kentucky in 1852 which would seem to support the marriage location. I'm not sure about the other children, except Robert who we believe was born in Graves County.
I'm really excited about the possibility of Hardin Roberts Barnhill being William's father. May I ask what led you to the conclusion?

I am not a Barnhill decendant but I believe that Nancy Jones Barnhill and my GGG Grandmother Maranza Jones Manning are sisters. Nancy is listed as living with Maranza and her family in the 1850 Pike County, Al census. Also in the 1860 Pike County census, James Monroe's parents are living two doors down from Maranaza Manning. Maranza and Nancy are both in Santa Rosa County by 1870. I was hoping someone could give me some information on Nancy's parents. I would appreciate anything anyone could share with me.
