I hadn't heard of Elisha Barns, but he interests me because I have a Barns line in Northumberland Co., Ontario from 1822 up through my ggrandmother, Amarilla Barns (1849-1936). I'm looking for where they came from but can't tell if they were "settlers" or received land as a result of some military service.
Amarilla's father, John Barns, was born about 1822. He married Matilda Phillips.
There are other Barns in the vicinity:
Thomas Barns/Barnes b. about 1760 in US is on Conc. 3, Lot 22 in Haldimand Twp., Northumberland Co., Ontario in 1826. He was earlier granted land in Emily Twp., as were John and David Barns.
Gilbert Barns is on Conc. 3, Lot 21 in Haldimand Twp., Northumberland Co., Ontario in 1826. A Gilbert Barns is granted land in Mariposa in 1825.
John Barns in the 1820 Census of Haldimand Twp., Northumberland County. His household shows an additional John Barns.
David Barns in Haldimand Twp. in 1826 and 1835 land records.
Here is what Haldimand Twp. census has (from Cobourg Library records)
Census Haldimand Twp. for Thomas Barnes:
1816 Thomas, 1 female 16-60, 1 male under 16
1817 Thomas, 1 female 16-60, 1 male 16-60 (so the male under 16 of 1816 was born about 1801)
1818 Thomas was not found by me in this census.
1819 Thomas Barns appears but data is illegible
1820 Thomas is over 60, 1 female over 60 (total of 2 in household)
I've seen a citation of an 1866 marriage record for an Eldridge Barns and Olive Hubbell - Michael Stephenson's database - not sure where the marriage took place.
None of this may interest you or be relevant, but I thought I'd float it out there just in case.
