I found this information on a message board from 1997, but the email that went with it no longer is working. Looking for someone that is familiar with this story and if there is anyone has found anymore information on John Edward Barnes or Elizabeth Pruitt who are my GGG Grandparents.
Would like to know where this story came from. Also I according to census records John Edward Barnes was born in North Carolina not Illinois. So here is the message I found:

Am searching for info on BARNES. I have John Edward BARNES b. in Newton County,Ill (?) m. Elizabeth Pruitt. Children : That I know of is:Lucinda,Joseph,JohnP,Solomon,Sarah,Thomas,Edward and a couple that died
during the war.The children were born in Mo. Lucinda in 1841. John
Edward Barnes left home when he was 9 years old because he hit a black
woman and he thought he killed her. He never contacted his family again
but remembers having older brothers. Later he heard through friends that
he just knocked the woman out. That's all I have on him would like more
info on him. I have a lot on his children, civil recs Thank you Carolyn
