I've traced my Family back to the Christening of William Barnsley as of 03 Apr 1785 Great Barford, Bedford, England.

His parents were listed as Jn (John ??) Barnsley and Eliz (Elizabeth ??) in the IGI Individual Records.

Marriage of William Barnsley & Rebecca Spittle as of 07 Nov. 1807 @ Saint Peter or Collegiate, Wolverhampton, Stafford, England ( IGI Individual Records)

My father, Cecil Barnsley born 1930 had lost all his relatives by 1946 except for his younger brother Harry. I noticed that a Raybone Family Tree member - A “granvilles25 has a public tree on Ancestry that includes a Henry Joseph Cornelius b. 1 Feb. 1907 in Woolwich and who died there. Tree name is Raybone Family tree. I wonder if this person is connected to you. We have found many Cornelius's living in Woolwich but as of yet don't have information on this Henry Joseph b. 1907. I am currently doing some research on my mother's side of the family ie. Barnsley.
I have only just discovered Walter & Gertrude Barnsley but they both appear in my family tree.
Walter was the son of John D Barnsley born 1851, who was the son of William Barnsley born 1819. My Great Great Grandfather John Barnsley born 1822 was the brother of William Barnsley. I have a lot of information if you would like to contact me.

I've since read your other message on the Barnsley board where it seems that your William John is the son of John and Sarah Ann Barnsley, so perhaps not the same as mine after all?

How do you know the names of these parents?

I can tell you that I think that my William Barnsley born around 1872 was the son of Joshua Barnsley and Margaret (possibly nee Robinson), and had siblings Joshua b 1869, Arthur b 1876 and Sarah Ann b 1878.

I must emphasise though that my information is not verified by certificates - it's simply what I've gathered from the censuses.

My William is not a direct ancestor of mine. My family tree software tells me that he would have been my 1st cousin 3 times removed. He was my great great grandfather's brother's son. If you can follow that!

Sadly the name Dorothy Bessie Barnsley doesn't mean anything to me so I can't help you with her.

Perhaps we're making connections that just aren't there. It was just the date of birth plus the Arthur connection, and the fact that my William was still unmarried in 1901 that made me think they might be the same person.

Perhaps one to keep on the back burner just in case.

Thanks for your reply. I might be likely that the William Barnsley you have may be the same person. It seems logical that fathers call their sons after either themselves or one of their family members.

Because William John never married Louisa Ada Broomfield, I am finding it very difficult to establish where he was born.

I have got details of a Dorothy Bessie Barnsley, buried very close to his plot in Walmer, Kent. I have sent for her death certificate to see if they were attached in any way, maybe wife before Louisa, or a sister maybe.

If you have any details of other siblings, would you let me know please. I will keep you informed if I find anything. Regards, Lynne

I have a William Barnsley born Sheffield around 1872 in my tree, which would fit with your William's age at death. His parents were Joshua and Margaret (possibly nee Robinson).

William was still unmarried in 1901 which would also fit with your William who presumably didn't marry until later in life if his first child wasn't born until 1918. My William was a wire worker in the censuses. He also had a younger brother called Arthur, which is the name of your William's son.

Do you think my William and yours could be the same man? I don't know if my William had a middle name of John though.

I wonder if you have information regarding William John Barnsley born ?1882 or ?1874. Originally, I thought he was born in Walsall, Birmingham, however, the more I learn, the more contradictions arise. i.e. his birth date.

I have a death certificate from 1946 stating he died age 74, however, I'm not sure if that is correct.

He had 7 children with Louisa Ada Broomfield (born 1887) in Dover, Kent.

The first child Arthur W. born in 1918 in Wolverhampton, the other 6 were born in Deal, Kent.

Can you tell me anything about their marriage, as I am struggling to find any information.

I have just seen this message, which is now several years old, hope you pick up on my reply. I was interested in the Leicester area connection. My great grandfather, William Peter Coulsey, married Ada Mercy Barnsley in Little Bowden, Market Harbrough (where she was born) in 1887. This was the second marriage of William Peter and he had no children with Ada - so I am only "loosely" connected to the Barnsleys and have never met anyone from that side (and clearly have no knowledge of any fallings out!!). However, from the marriage certificate, Ada was living in Great Bowden and her father was Charles Brook Barnsley, a Currier. The witnesses were Emily Hetty Barnsley and James Barnsley.

My father never spoke a great deal about any of his family (most of whom were dead before I was born), but Ada is the one person he did talk about - she nursed him through scarlet fever, apparently. I think I looked up some earlier census returns for the Barnsleys, but I cannot find them at present (they are probably in some obscure directory that I set up for. no doubt, very good reasons??). However, if my memory is correct all of the returns had the family living in the Market Harborough/Leicester area.

If any of this sounds familiar I would be interested to hear a bit more about the Barnsley side - of which I know almost nothing.

Hello, Am looking for information on a Lady Jane Barnsley. Family legend has it that she was disinherited after marrying a common butcher with last name Dougherty. They lived in Philadelphia. Her second marriage was to a Mr. Bradnack. They were the parents of a William Henry Bradnack. Time frame mid 1800's. Any help would be gratefully appreciated.

I have been researching the men who worked for Vickers Steelworks in Sheffield, England. Can anybody tell me more about Harry Barnsley. I know very little about this man apart from his military details. There is a Harry U. Barnsley from the Sheffield area, who married in 1912. I believe he was born in The Ecclesall Bierlow area of Sheffield in 1891. This could be my man, but I'm not sure.

Saw your message today while searching for other things.
Sorry to say the church was demolished some years ago due to re-development of the area. As I remember it was a beautiful building that nowadays would not be allowed to have been touched by developers. Some of my fore fathers were married there as it was the main church for the town of Barnsley. I would imagine the records are kept at the Archives Dept. which is situated at the local library on Shambles Street.

I too can trace my Barnsley family back to the Handsworth area. My tree includes a Thomas Henry who was b.1846. In 1851 his family were living in Marrowfat Ln, Handsworth. His parents were Henry & Mary and they had several other children.

Is anyone related to the following?

Matthew Barsley was born in St. Georges, Shropshire around 1849 and died in Manchester in 1899. Matthew was a bricksetter.

Matthew was married to Mary A HILL who was born around 1850 in Hill Top, near West Bromwich, Staffordshire. Mary was the daughter of David Hill born 1822 in Wednesbury, Staffordshire and Harriet Rowley b. 1823 in Wednesbury also.

In 1881 Matthew and Mary were living at 22 Malpas Street, Bradford, Manchester (near where the Commonwealth Stadium stands). They had two daughters Mary born 1875 and Sarah born 1878. I'm not sure of any more children, Sarah is living with her mother in 1901, also with her grandmother Harriet and cousin Jane Cowle b.c. 1884.

If anyone is related to any of the above, I would be happy to hear from you.

My Mother was a Barnsley(Hilda) her parents were Clara & Alfred Ernest, I can go back several generations to Thomas & Elizabeth Barnsley Living at Soho Street Handsworth in 1851 census.(Thomas born West Bromwich about 1775)
They married at St. Martins B'ham 25 Nov 1798 their children were - Joseph, Elizabeth, Jane, Mary Anne, Ann, John, Eliza, Thomas Henry.

I am looking for information on my Great grandparents, Walter and Gertrude Elizabeth Barnsley. My grandfather never talked about them at all, but his birth certificate shows he was born in 1906 in Leicester to Walter and Gertrude Elizabeth Barnsley (nee Parkinson). He was a groom. Greetings, I am looking for info. on an Elizabeth Barnsley, that may have married a Mr.Rose in Eng. pre 1885, they had a Daughter Marian. Elizabeth re-married a Thomas Fellows, and they came to Canada abt. 1885. Seems that Elizabeth's dad was a Minister.

Hi my name is Laura Barnsley, searches i have done before shows that the majority of Barnsleys are in Birmingham. I know my aunties and uncles and nan in Birmingham, but i do not know cousins or 2nd cousins etc. I am desperately trying to find out about my grandfather whose name was THOMAS BARNSLEY and he died around 1950. My dad does not know anything about him because he was only 1 when he died and he did not talk about it. I live in Wiltshire in the south west of england. thanks.

William BARNSLEY married Mary MOSS at St. Georges Birmingham on 8/1/1834 (info rec'd from David Taylor, according to the IGI)
They apparently had 13 Children.

I have a family tree from the Barnsley family
that goes as far back as 1779. Not far enough
for you but I would be interested to know if
you had found anything. My mother was a Barnsley,
born, Diana Barnsley in 1949. She is the daughter
