Hello Tracey,
This is one of the Richards families that I am interested in -
John RICHARDS who was born in 1816 at High Ham, son of Joseph RICHARDS & Elizabeth TATCHELL. John married Tryphena REED in 1840 at Bristol. Tryphena was born in Weston Zoyland ca 1813.
After their marriage John & Tryphena lived in Weston Zoyland where they had five children. The youngest was Frank RICHARDS born ca 1855. Frank died in 1932. Frank married Matilda, nee RICHARDS in 1885. Matilda was the daughter of Alfred & Pamela RICHARDS. I do not know when Matilda died. Do you have any details for this couple and their family?
Desley Hardy

Dear Ken,

I was very interested to read your treatise on the origins of the name Barnstable (with all of its various spellings.)
You may be interested to know that a friend suggested the seaport of Barnstaple evolves from old Norse - and I am spelling this phonetically as it has been some years - Birnstopl - meaning a mooring place for (war) ships.

Gail

Not sure if you got the reply that the Charles Payne you mentioned is my great grandfather. This MIGHT be her.

You may e-mail me at my private e-mail, if you want. wackerg@ccf.org

Gail

Jay Glanville's alleged research is not to be trusted. He appears simply to pick up and use stuff from other people. I am peripherally connected to the Barnstables of Middlezoy. Nudged by that slight link, he has evidently collected much of my on-line information and transferred it to his own web pages. I know this because his material contains a misspelling about my mother's place of death. That misspelling appeared in an earlier version of my genealogical web page. I have since corrected it. He has not.

Re: Barnstable surname, Somersetshire, ENG

Thank you for your query.

On Jan. 3, 2006 I posted at Ancestry.com's message board my findings regarding Charles Barnstables' father Thomas changing his surname from Bastable to Barnstable.

Charles father was baptised at the parish of North Pehterton, Somerset County Nov. 26, 1755. He and his three brothers were baptised with the surname Bastable.

I have extracted from the North Petherton Parish Register male Bastable given names that form a continuum from Thomas' baptismal to the marriage of Edward Bastable and Alice Ross in 1664. (I have granted you permission to look at my family tree posted at Ancestry.com. to view these names).

The Bastable surname first appeared in North Petherton Parish Register in 1559. I am of the opinion that the surname is of Norman origin.

The Dictionary of English Surnames credits a Richard de Bardestapel for the origin of the Bastable surname. He was recorded in the Feet of Fines (court records) for Essex County in 1219. The dictionary also mentions a Ralph Barstaple who was recorded in the Somerset County Subsidy Roll of 1327.

As best as I have been able to determine, the surname name Barnstable was drived from the a market town in north Devonshire. The town was given a charter in the year 930 AD by King Acthelstan. The spelling of the town name was Barnstapel identical to that of the sea port nearby.

Greetings. My wife is a Barnstable descendant of Charles B. and Elizabeth Eddington, the circa-1860s immigrants to Illinois. As you know, the roots are in Middlezoy and environs. I have often pondered how and why the surname surfaced there when it appears to be associated with the Devon town. I had concluded without evidence that an ancestor wandered thencewards across the moors. Would love to be in contact with you.

Ann Gould, baptised at HiHam, Somerset County, England April 14, 1734, married Robert Bastable November 3, 1753 at the parish Bridgwater. She was the mother of Wiliiam, Thomas, James and Robert Bastable who were baptised at the parish of Puriton in the years 1754, 1755, 1757 and 1762 respectively.

Ann was the daughter of Richard and Alice (Young) Gould who were married at the parish of HiHam October 31, 1725. Richard was burried at HiHam March 14, 1752.

Alice was burried at the parish of Puriton February 27, 1761.
Hi, Gail,

I haven't had a chance to digest all the information from Ken and Jay yet. Ken states that some of Jay's information is incorrect. I'm not sure where the information goes astray. Do you?

I have a copy of the Western Union that was sent from CA about Charles Payne's death 16 Oct 1944. It was sent by a cousin, Alice Hagerty. Do you know who she is? Somewhere, there is an Alice Babcock in the family.

My husband, Bob, whose family this is, and I saw the grave of a Charles Payne in Waukegan, Illinois, many years ago. I am going to have to go through my notes again to see what cemetery it was in. Perhaps this was the son, Charles Alexander Payne and not the father? In my notes the son is called Al.

Nice to hear from you.
Nancy

I can verify that Charles Payne was indeed the brother of Eliza. He was born in 1864 to John Payne and Minerva Lovibond Barnstable, who married in 1862. He married Amelia Isaakson (spelling varies)(born in Sweden 1865 +- 5 yrs). They had a son, Charles Alexander Payne, born 1889, then a daughter, Alice, born in the mid to late 1890's. Their marriage was reputed to have been tempestuous at best, and they at least separated, probably divorced. I believe that Charles may have remarried. In any event, he died in California in 1944, and is buried at Forest Lawn.
Gail
Their first son was Charles, b 1864, from whom I am descended. Charles was my great grandfather.
Please feel free to e-mail me - wackerg@ccf.org.
I have an original Cabinet Card photograph of “Alice Barnstable Bock (Mrs. H. Bock) and Annie Kelly Brown”, which I would like to get back to family members of one of the two. Photo was taken in about 1895, in Burlington (Racine Co.) WI, and each of the women looks to be about age 25.

I found Alice Barnstable in Antioch (Lake Co.) IL in 1880 census, as age 13, daughter of Thomas and Ann, and found Herman and Alice Bock in the 1930 census for Antioch (Lake Co.)
Nancy:

My mother's mother's father was James Joseph Barnstable. He was born July 31, 1857 at Avon Township, Lake County, Illinois. He was the son of George and Sophia (Hucker) Barnstable of the parish of Middlezoy, Somerset County, England.

Yes, I am aware of the information on the Barnstables in Jay Glanville's pedigree. Unfortunately the pre 1750 information is bogus.

In the 1960's my sister engaged a respected Somerset County searcher to trace Barnstable/Bastable lineage from the year 1800 back to the 1600's. The result of the searcher's effort is as presented in Glanville's pedigree.

Through films available through the Family History Center of the Lattar Day Saints Church I have found entries in the parish register of North Petherton that negate the findings of the searcher.

Prior to the year 1800 the surname Barnstable was not present in parishes around Bridgwater, Somerset County. The Robert Barnstable, born abt. 1732, as presented in Glanville's pedigree, was a conversion by the searcher of a Robert Bastable, baptised March 15, 1730 at St. Mary's Church, North Petherton. He was the son of Edward and Sarah Bastable for which a marriage date still needs to be found. Robert had two brothers baptised at North Petherton; John April 15, 1731 and William July 27, 1735.

John and Elizabeth (Keirle) Bastable were married at the parish of Othry Sep. 1, 1737. He was the son of John and Elizabeth (Daw) Bastable. He was baptised at Middlezoy Aug. 22, 1714

Eliza Jane (Payne) Thomas accompanied by her husband Daniel and children Mable and Hector, arrived at Ellis Island, New York, Aug. 4, 1904. They made the passage on the ship St. Paul. Their point of embarkment was South Hampton, England. Their last residence was Cardiff, Wales. Their point of destination was 102 Low Ave., Waukegan, Illinois, the residence of Charles Payne; more-than-likely Eliza's brother.

Eliza's mother Minerva (Barnstable) Payne was the daughter ot Charles Barnstable and Mary Lovibond.
The James Barnstable enumerated in the 1911 Canada Ceusus was the son of Charles Barnstable and Elizabeth Eddington who emigrated to Illinois USA from England arriving at the port of New York July 30, 1867. (Detailed information can be viewed through Ancestry.com's Message Board Center. Using the Advanced Search option enter Barnstable in the surname field and select "immigration" in the Message Type field. Then click-on "find".

James" pedigree can be viewed through Ancestry.com's One World Tree database by filling out the One World Tree's questionaire with the lineage information presented. When the Results page appears click-on James name.

According to Illinois marriage records James married a Hattie Russell Sanders at Montgomery County, Illinois October, 1890. The Ann whom appears as James' wife in the 1911 Canada Census may be a second marriage. Also James' pedigree as presented in One World Tree is incorrect pre Thomas Barnstable/Betty Kelloway. (For detailed information go to Ancestry.com's Message Center. In the Message Type field select Biography.)

There was a James Barnstable listed in the Canadian Census for 1911. He was born in 1863 (died in 1951) and his wife was Annie born in 1873. They had eleven children born between 1891 and 1910.
Records (Ancectry.com One World Tree) indicate that he was married in Illinois and by 1911 was living in Canada.
Does anyone know from whom this James was decended?
I know that his children knew of and visited family who moved from England (Frederick Barnstable) in the early 1900s but have since lost contact.

It appears we are related through Thomas Barnstable. James Barnstable (1823) was the brother of Thomas Hucker Barnstable(1809) as well as Elijah Barnstable (1818). Thomas's daughter Emma (1844) married Elijah's son Lot (1843). Their son Lot was my great, great grandfather. His son Frederick emigrated to Ontario, Canada along with two of his sisters (Dorcas and Minnie) sometime after December of 1901. Our family name became Barnstaple sometime after 1905 or 1906.
I am trying to determine how and/or why the surname Barnstable does not appear in either the Bishop's Transcript or Parish Register within those parishes until 1782; two hundred and thirty-two years after the Church of England began maintaining such records. .........Ken

There are LOTS of Ba(rn)stables in the Othery parish registers. If you want me to look any up, let me know. I am sure some are from Middlezoy, if I remember correctly. I have access to the Othery registers and can look things up pretty readily.

Amy in Denver

Bastable Surname, Middlezoy,, Somerset, England

The orgin of the Barnstable surname emanating out of Middlezoy, Somerset Cty., England to the state of Illinois, U.S.A., traces to Thomas Bastable who married Betty Kelloway on April 8, 1782 at the Holy Cross Church in Middlezoy.

From 1792 until his death in 1824 Thomas appeared in the Somerset Land-tax Assessment Rolls under the surname Barnstable. His use of both surnames between 1792 and 1824 is evident from children's baptisms entered into Middlezoy's Holy Cross Church parish register.

Thomas and Betty had four sons. When they married each was married by the surname Barnstable even though he had been baptised by the surname Bastable.

Validation for Thomas' baptismal surname can be found upon the Marriage Bann Certificate between him and Betty Kelloway. When signing the document he spelled the surname " Bastable ". Attestment to the baptismal surname can be found on the Marriage Bann Certificate issued to his brother James and Joan Day on April 15, 1783 by the Holy Cross Church of Middlezoy and to his brother Robert and Martha Palmer on August 19, 1783 at Huntspill Parish, Somerset Cty., England. Both signed the Marriage Bann Certificate spelling their surname " Bastable ".
( Transcriptions of these parish entries can be viewed at www.familyhistoryonline.net.)

Thomas had nine grandsons, one granddaughter and one great grandson emigrate to the state of Illinois, U.S.A. under the surname of Barnstable. Over the next several months I will post at Ancestry.com their vital statistic emigration data.
