My name is Katherine (known as "Barni") Barnswell & my grandfather's grandfather was James Barnswell from Jamaica. I reside in Maple Ridge, a suburb of Vancouver, Canada. James came to Canada (as I've been told) in the early to mid 1800's & was a carpenter. Many of the buildings he constructed are still standing, today. He married a lady named Mary Lowe who travelled on a ship from somewhere around the Caribbean. That is all I know about that (Mary's) side of the family - tho would love to learn more.
I've met a few distant Barnswell's, from the States - as far south as Florida, at reunions held in Victoria (Vancouver Island), BC Canada where James settled (Barnswell's are considered one of the "Black Pioneers" - being one of the first black families to settle in the area) when he arrived in Canada (& where the next several generations were born & lived & many still do live on Vancouver Island & the mainland, like myself).
Its been interesting to read comments from other Barnswells'. Even my own known family members like Barb (stepmom) & Stephanie (2nd cousin) have posted some information.
James & Mary had 10 chidren (5 boys & 5 girls) one was lost to illness (Percivel - sp??) at age 6 to illness. 4 of the girls, I believe, married (2 of them married Alexander - brothers) & moved on to the States. Whereas the boys, only 1 produced any children; Jimmy. Jimmy married a nurse & had 2 boys, Albert (my grandfather) & Earl who both excelled in sports (as did their dad & this trait has continued on to this day with many of the cousins playing various sports. Including their own baseball team, played locally). I have a picture of Jimmy given to me by my Great Uncle Earl (Jimmy's son, who is in his mid 90's today), from when he played ball on the local Victoria team. The picture is a framed copy of a newspaper article printed about the team's achievements. This was published over 100 years ago! & he is the only black (proud) person in the picture!! I've been told that if the American League allowed blacks, at that time, Jimmy would have been drafted (the league learned later the value of skin blindness).
I have heard that the Barnswell's are a mix of Jamaican & Scottish blood. Or perhaps, that's just another limb of the family. Curious, as to origin of the name Barnswell. Does anyone have any knowledge of this? Also looking for information on James' siblings & parents.
I can provide more information, for those who are curious about this branch of the family - just not sure if this is the proper forum to relay a lot of details. This being my first search on my family, online.
Barni Barnswell
On the familysearch.org site I found a Balfour Barnswell who was born on 12 April 1906 and died on 12 March 1998. Do you think this could be him?

Daddy doesn't talk much about his father. That is really sad I know. So I have only learnt a few things from him.

I did not know my grandfather lived in America.

Everill

Hello Everill,
Balfour is related to my father, they are cousins. My father's family was also in Panama. In the late 1800 when the panama canal started the French was running the project, they had problems with cost over run and accidents. The american took over and they imported a large group of west indians from Jamaica, Barbados and other islands to do the manual labour. There are several decendants of Jamaicans still living in Panama. I have met Balfour in Kingston, Jamaica, also his relatives were at my father's funeral in 1989.To verify Balfour place of birth you may contact the social security office in Washington, DC. The Jamaica Gleaner published a picture of Balfour in the 1960's where he was wearing an african outfit. My father was just as famous as Balfour anyway that is another story. I explained to you in our last correspondent...Balfour was a shoemaker in Old Harbour before he went into politics. His rise to the mayoral chair was assisted by Wills Issac a party member. Did your father attended his funeral? There are several articles on Balfour in archive in jamaica.Did you know that he was living in the USA?

Hi Bert,

Thanx again for your info.

My father told me that my grandfather Balfour Barnswell was actually born in Panama. My brother believes this was around 1904, which was the same time that the Panama Canal was being built by the Americans.

It also seems that most Jamaican work migrants lived in a settlement called Cristobal, Panama while the canal was being built.

http://www.railroadextra.com/pcbk210.Html

Therefore I believe Balfour's father, my great grandfather, had gone to work in Panama.

Have you any idea how you are related to my grandfather?

Apprently, his father told him of a relative who migrated to Canada to seek is fortunate. I have tried several times without luck to find his decendants. In the 1980's when I was in university in the states, I met a young man with the name Barnswell but he was South Carolina.
Barbara, if you can give me as much detail about James Barnswell, I will try and fit the pieces together. The Barnswells in Jamaica are well known and respected; they are very successful in politics, education and business.
Please keep intouch, hopefully, we will meet.

Best Regards,

Dr.Bertram Barnswell

Robert,

Balfour Barnswell is related to John N.Barnswell. Balfour was mayor of Kingston and St.Andrew in the late fifties and served for three terms. He was very active in politics and was a member of the People National Party (PNP). Balfour was a good speaker with a sense of pride in his delivery. In the early years of the PNP, they were called the lesser lites by Norman Manley, mainly because of the role they had to play in order to develop the party. However, he was no lesser lite to the people of the cooperate area; they elected him several times as a councillor and subsequently as a mayor. All Barnswells should be proud of Balfour for his contribution to the development of the water system and roads in the greater kingston, especially the city centre and Mountain View.
Mr. Barnswell was a great citizen of Jamaica and the commonwealth. He had a sense of black pride with burning desire to improve the people's lives. He exhibits the true Barnswell traits, hard work, dedication, and respect of the individual.
We have seen this traits in all successful Barnswells, like John N. Barnswell, James Barnswell, and Pearl Barnswell.

Regards,
Dr.Bertram Barnswell

His early electoral victory results are on the internet. He migrated to the United Statesof America,NewYork and final settled in Florida,he moved back to Jamaica in his twilight years.Members of his family can be found in Old Harbour, Jamaica. Balfour died in 1998?? in Jamaica. If anyone is interested in his political legacy, they should contact the Jamaica information service or the archive of political records. In my research I discovered that he has offspring living in USA,Canada & UK. I am doing research on the legacy of the Barnswells from 1825-2000.This would cover Jamaica,Canada,USA, Panama,Cuba and UK. I am interested in old records and photographs or pictures of Barnswell who have migrated from Jamaica in the early years.

Claudia,

I was born in Hayes,Clarendon the son of John and Vireta Barnswel. The Barnswell family in clarendon is very large. However, the John N.Barnswell was the senior member of the family. He was a very successful man in animal husbandary; many families in the Hayes and Svannah communities depended on the rich cows milk for their children.

Mr. Barnswell died on July 7,1989 in the local hospital after a short illness. He was 82 years of age when he passed He and his wife were truly blessed, today, his kids and grand kids are making a name for themselves in Canada and England. There are doctors, lawyers, teachers, engineer and articians.

Please e-mail me and tell me about youeself; I would like to know what branch of the family you are from.

Best Regards,
Dr.Bertram Barnswell

I first want to thank you very much for the information you have provided about my grandfather.

My father Robert P Barnswell who used to live in kingston jamacia says that my grandfather used to live in Panama for a time. Do you have any information concerning this matter?
Dad also said that his grandfather worked on the railroad in America for a time and finally moved back to Jamacia to start a Lodge. Do you have any information about this as well?

Thanks again

Everill

I have a James L. Barnswell in my study. He was supposedly
from Wilmington,N.C.,about 1840.He married Hannah Murphy
in Brooklyn New York, in 1868.They gave birth to 3 children:
John,James and Mary. They then traveled to Annapolis MD.
He, James and Mary died of croup and diptheria about 1873,
each only weeks apart.John survived and became the stepson
of J.Leo Paget,since Hannah remarried about 1874.
John joined up with the U.S.Navy,retired and died of a heart
attack in Atlantic City NJ, in November 1927.He had resided
in Philadelphia, when it happened while on vacation.
I have other info if I have your interest on the right track?
