Joseph Barnum b. 1796 in CT -- related to PT Barnum?

I have traced my ancestry on my grandmother's side back to Joseph Barnum, born in CT in 1796 and later came to Ohio. Family lore says that our Barnum line is related to the famous PT Barnum, but I can find no connection. Joseph lived in CT around the time P.T. was born (1810), but I can find no records of Joseph's parents. Does anybody have information on his parents or other family?
