Joseph Barnum b. 1796 in CT -- related to PT Barnum?

I have traced my ancestry on my grandmother's side back to Joseph Barnum, born in CT in 1796 and later came to Ohio. Family lore says that our Barnum line is related to the famous PT Barnum, but I can find no connection. Joseph lived in CT around the time P.T. was born (1810), but I can find no records of Joseph's parents. Does anybody have information on his parents or other family?

Thanks,

Steve Jameson
steve_jameson@verizon.net

I seek: parentage of Gideon BARNUM. Gideon died 1818 Danby VT. Barnabas BARNUM, son of Gideon, born Danby VT 1775 or 1783 (online confusion). Barbabas' sibling Rhoda b. 1780 here? (Danby VT). Gideon BARNUM believed born Bet. 1716 - 1723, but it's not in V.R. of Danbury CT. Some say Gideon's father is John. Online it looks like Ebenezer (1682-1755). Gideon married 1739, 1757, 1768. I am tracing the 1768 Kent CT marriage with Elizabeth MERRY. Looking for answers.

Thomas Barnum's gravesite

Has Thomas Barnum's gravesite been found? Elsewhere on the site I read about the project to transcribe tombstones in Danbury, but didn't see if our immigrant ancestor's has yet been located.

Also, apparently since proof has not yet been located to link Thomas Barnum with Sir Francis Barnum and Lady Elizabeth Lennard, I'm assuming no one has been able to prove up the lineage to be accepted into the Magna Carta Society. I would like to hear from anyone who has tried, or who has any ideas how to "breach the gap" in documentation.
Samuel Chester of Groton/New London, CT); d. 29 May 1929, Bonfield, Kankakee, Ill.

Also I purchased the genealogy titled "The Barnum Family of Stratford, Connecticut" The descendants of Thomas Barnum circa 1660-1780. This doesn't appear to link with my lineage, but if anybody out there could use it, just let me know.
Emily, Talmadge, Elijah and Polly Barnum - Franklin County, NY

Hello from Winter Park, near Orlando, Florida.

I am working on a connection to the Barnum family with a brick wall of sorts. Most of my Lee family roots are in Franklin County, New York, and as you know, there are many Barnums located in the North Bangor cemetery there.

My Great Great Grandfather’s (Newell F. Lee) grandmother was an Emily Barnum, b. abt 1813-1815 and married in 1836. The following statement I culled from the Franklin County Marriages info on the NYGEN page online

“ Barnum, Emily Oct. 19, 1836 Robert Gibson he was a farmer from Bangor ae 28; she was a cook from Bangor ae 22. Witnesses: Elijah Barnum, Talmage Barnum, Polly Barnum, and Sophronia Parmelee.(Sophronia is a family member of the minister) (she lived 1814-1871 and is buried at North Bangor)”

Although there are several Emilys, Talmages and Elijahs in those parts, I cant deduce who belongs to whom, and figure out who Emily’s parents were, who Polly is (a sister or wife of either gentleman.

Thanks in advance for any assistance you may be able to offer. I suspect the answers are staring me in the face and I just need another cup of coffee!
I would be happy to share any additional information about my tree from Emily’s line.

Chris Lee
Winter Park, Florida
OLD SETTLER DEAD BY HIS OWN DEED
James M. Barnum, Seventy-Eight Years Old, Found Poisend At His Home.
WROTE THAT HE WAS TIRED OF LIFE
And Leaving this Note In a Trunk He Swallowed a Big Dose Of Morphine
James M. Barnum, aged seventy-eight years, a farmer living in the town of Newark, nine or ten miles northwest of Beloit, committed suicide by taking morphine. The other members of his family were away from homeduring the fore part of the night and were surprised on trying to enter the home to find the doors all locked from the inside. When they succeeded in gaining an entrace they were horrified in finding the lifeless body of the aged Mr. Barnum lying on the floor.
Poison Found in the Room
Investigation showed in the room a paper containg a little morphine, and any doubts of self-destruction were dispelled by the finding in the old gentlemen's trunk of a letter in which he said he was tired of life and would end it by taking poison. A coronor's inquest returned a verdict in accordence. Deceased has resided at Newark nearly fifty years.
Janesville Gazette dated Thursday, January 21, 1892. G.O. No.: 59, 22 June 1865. Citation: Barnum served on board the U.S.S. New Ironsides during action in several attacks on Fort Fisher, 24 and 25 December 1864; and on 13, 14, and 15 January 1865. The ship steamed in and took the lead in the ironclad division close in shore and immediately opened its starboard battery in a barrage of well_directed fire to cause several fires and explosions and dismount several guns during the first 2 days of fighting. Taken under fire as she steamed into position on 13 January, the New Ironsides fought all day and took on ammunition at night despite severe weather conditions. When the enemy came out of his bombproofs to defend the fort against the storming party, the ship's battery disabled nearly every gun on the fort facing the shore before the cease-fire orders were given by the flagship. Barnum was commended for highly meritorious conduct during this period.

Selina BARNUM & Samson SMITH

My ancestor Samson SMITH (1847-1925), b. Neversink, Sullivan Co., NY,, was married first to Louisa KEOGAN (c1846-c1877), and then in 1878 to Selina BARNUM, daughter of William and Eliza BARNUM, who lived in Denning, Ulster Co. in 1875, and in Grover village, Bradford Co. in 1880.
At the BARNUM website database she is shown as Selina F. BARNUM, daughter of William Harrison BARNUM and Eliza THOMPSON, so this is probably the right one, but my Selina is shown as "Selina SMITH" in 1880, "Julia S. SMITH" in 1900 & 1910, and reverts to Selina SMITH in 1920 & later.
I can provide some dates and information about her whereabouts if anyone is looking at others of this family.
There does seem to be a little interest on the web in her brother Millard BARNUM.

Looks they may have stopped in Penfield on the way there.

If this helps, please let me know - I'm related to Armstrongs and Barnum with Covey cousins.

I am researching info on Eva Barnum , born 1863, who was my great grandmother. I recently found out she was born in Canada. I have found the family in an 1870 Census in Michigan. The head of household first name I cannot read but the list shows Julia as his wife, with children being Henry, John, Hattie, & Eva.
Would greatly appreciate it if anyone has any info to share.
Thanks, Jane

Barnum in Lockport, NY

I haven't posted in a while, so I thought I'd post a new message, and since there haven't been any new messages lately - here goes!.

My grandfather was Frank/Francis P. Barnum. He told his daughter that he was born in Lockport, NY in Oct. of 1888. He said his father was also Frank Barnum, and he was a canal boat tender on the Erie Barge Canal. Supposedly, my grandfather was born on the canal boat.

I've been to Lockport, NY with no success. My grandfather married Ethel Lockwood in New Jersey in 1916 and settled in Whippany, NJ and worked for the Whippany Paper Company.

His children were his daughter Frances, and sons William Raymond, Thomas who died at 2 years old from pneumonia, and George - my father.

There seems to be an obvious error on Page 32 of the Barnum Family Book compiled by Eben.

It clearly shows Silas born 1775 (actually18 Dec 1774) before his father. Anyone have any insite on this? Who is Silas' real father? It looks like Ebenezer Benedict Barnum b. 1781 could not be his father.

Silas' headstone shows he was born in 1774 (by calculation). Some people have manipulated his birthdate to "fit" but didn't take into account his other offspring. I believe his dates are right and his father is not the right person.

Has anyone done work on this problem?

Descendants of Edgar LeRoy Barnum and Carrie Dunmire

Dear cousins et al,
I'm the GGranddaughter of E.L.Barnum and Carrie Dunmire, who resided in Parkersburg, West Virginia and are buried here as well. My Grandmother Mildred Virginia Barnum was a 3rd cousin to P.T.Barnum, and always received free tickets to the Barnum & Bailey Circus when they came to town. Her siblings included the following: Robert LeRoy "Pete" (sports fans), Ethel, Evelyn, Eugene "Gene" (more sports fans), Hazel Barnum Guthrie, Leonard "Feets" (Pro sports fans as well), Mildred Virginia "Midge" and Geraldine "Gerry". I believe that's the birth order correctly. Only Hazel is still alive and in Minnesota at last notice. Mildred married Edward Grover Webster in Parkersburg, West Virginia and had 3 children: Edward, Jr., Robert Daniel
and Nancy Jane Lavandero. Nancy married Manuel "Mannie" Lavandero of Bronx, New York residence: they have two daughters: Diana Adams (son Rory) and Karen. My dad is Bob, who married Marilyn Kathleen Kerns of Parkersburg, and died in 1985. There are four of us still around: Jennifer Elaine (me), Jeffrey Lynn, Joanne Denise Pflug and Jon Patrick. Jon is the only one with children: Robert and Ryan; his wife's maiden name is Rumiela (Miel) Dala of Point Pleasant, WV. They live in Hurricane, WV at this time.
I would love to hear from other Barnum cousins, especially if they have photos and/or family charts, etc. Is anyone aware of any Native American bloodlines running in the mix? We have some from the Dunmires, and possibly a GGrandmother from Jackson County, WV. I'm still not sure about Dora Mae Greathouse - supposedly full-blood Native American and adopted from one of the Trails of Tears. I'm digging in the courthouse for any info I can find.
Hope to hear from y'all.
Sincerely yours,
Elaine

A Christ adopted by Barnum

I am trying to find some information about a ladie (no name) who was married to a Christ he ran off after stealing a horse or something like that and she married a Barnum who adopted her son, I believe Edward Christ, who became Edward Barnum. I may not have the first name right. I believe this took place around the early 1800's but not sure. My family (Barnums) ended up in Texas but don't know where the adoption took place possibly New York. I realize I have very sketchy information but if anyone has heard anything remotely like this I would appreciate any input.

Henry A. Barnum in the Civil War

"Henry A. Barnum (no relation to the famous showman) enlisted in the Twelfth New York Regiment as a private. Before the end of his first day, May 13, 1861, he was elected captain of his company. He led his men at Blackburn's Ford, Bull Run, and Malvern Hill before being seriously wounded.
Captured and imprisoned in Richmond, his name was soon recorded on the death list. Burial services were held and when word reached relatives they arranged for a funeral oration in his honor. Soon afterward, they learned with astonishment that he had been made colonel of the 149th New York Regiment. Having buried another man in his name, authorities in charge of the Confederate prison released Barnum in June 1863."

I am not related to Henry. I am just passing on this information, which comes from a book titled "Civil War Curiosities" by Webb Garrison. 1994.
Joyce

I'm looking for the year when Morgan King Barnum died. He was born 1861 in Fairfield, Connecticut, but spent much of his childhood in Jamesville, Onondaga county, NY, the place where his father, Henry Alanson Barnum, was born on 24 Sep 1833. He was married to Lavina King and died (probably in Onondaga) on 29 Jan 1892.

Morgan was a soldier and naturalist. In 1886 he wrote a book on the birds of Onondaga county. He may have been the one who married Eligia Swain in Floyd county, GA, in 1891.

Morgan died sometime between 1912 and 1922 but the precise year is unknown; anyone who has knowledge of this, please contact me!

Irene A. Taylor Barnum (P.T.Barnum's mother)

I'm searching for information on the Taylor line - I'm related either to one of P.T. Barnum's mother's brother's, Alanson, Edward,or Alanoch, or else to her aunt Jemima Sherwood and uncle Silas Taylor, but so far can't make the connection. I do have quite a bit of info on Irene's Sherwood and Jackson ancestors if anyone is interested. I would appreciate any info on Irene's aunt and uncle's and brothers'families! Cheryl

PT Barnum Historical Document Search

Hello.

I'm looking for a bill of sale in which
PT Barnum puchased 1/2 of the "California Managerie"
from a man from California.

This excerpt was taken from:

"Old Grizzly Adams
and The California Menagerie
from Struggles and Triumphs
or Forty Years Recollections"
by Phineas Taylor Barnum

"I had purchased, a week previously, one-half interest in his California menagerie, from a man who had come by way of the Isthmus from California, and who claimed to own an equal interest with Adams in the show. Adams declared that the man had only advanced him some money, and did not possess the right to sell half of the concern. However, thc man held a bill of sale for half of the "California Menagerie," and old Adams finally consented to accept me as an equal partner in the speculation, saying that he guessed I could do the managing part, and he would show up the animals."

I believe the man who PT speaks of (traveling by way of the Isthmus) to be my 3rd great-grandfather Samuel Emmons Hollister. Thanks for any tips on finding a copy of this document.

--Josh--

Ebenezer Barnum b circa 1715 CT

I have not been on this board for awhile and I am still confused.
Ebenezer married Elizabeth Skiff in Kent, CT in 1745 and I am having problems documentating his parents. My main source, "Genealogical Record of the Barnum Family" by Thomas Barnum (1912) has a ? mark for his parents and skips to his g-father Ebenezer b 29 May 1682. Any help on my Ebenezer in the subject line. Based on the dates it appears that the original source has an extra generation.
