The document about the manor of Patrington is not the last will of Thomas Bylith Baron. He did not die until 1871-2 when he was about 90. I have a copy of his Will which I got from the Office in London. It is very useful for family history because it gives lots of names of cousins etc. He had no children himself.

Baron's in Lancashire

I am looking for any information on my grandfather (Michael Clifford Baron - b.1930 d.1999) and his parents. I have his mother as Geraldine Betty Baron (nee Tomes) b.1910 d.1991 but nothing on his father who I only know from relatives to be Leslie J Baron who I believe died around the 1950's.

The only other interesting piece of info I have is that he was brought up in Kirkland Hall Preston with three Aunt Spinsters (sisters of Leslie J). These Aunts were May, Gertrude and Alice Baron. But alas I can not find any information on them.

Any guidance would be much appreciated.

Thanks for your reply, Nancy. Since last year when I left that message, I actually succeeded in finding the cousins in question - it appears they had been looking for my branch of the family, too. It's curious that several names match with your relatives, but it has to be a coincidence. I wish you luck in your research!
P.S. I have encountered several instances where the Jewish name Baron ended up as Barron upon immigration to the US. I wonder why.

Some of the names I'm running into are the same, but I don't know if they are the same family. My grgrandfather is Jacob Baron. I believe he lived in Lithuania. Married Pauline Jacobs about 1880, had two sons:Abraham and Moses(my grandfather.) Jacob and his family left the old country in the 1890's eventually settling in St Paul Minnesota. I had been stuck trying to find Jacob's family until very recently I obtained his death certificate which listed his father as David Baer Barron. As far as mother's maiden name, it said "unknown." Moses was born in 1883, Jacob in 1855, David in 1834.I've found some ship manifests that show several Barons traveling together to the US in the 1880's 90's & early 1900's. There seem to be several brothers, or cousins in Moses generation: Berel '78;Israel '86;Mendel '87; Chaim '73;Berl '68; Nachman'68. If any of this fits, let me know & I'll get it to you-if you can tell me how. Nancy Barron

Looking for a Baron who immigrated from Moscow, Russia in 1921

Hi there. I am looking for an ancestor whose first name I'm afraid none of my family members remember, but whose last name is Baron. He was born in Zhitomer, Ukraine, around 1900 and was an anarchist. He was put in jail, but managed to escape in 1921 and leave by boat. He went either to England, or the US; none is known for sure. His father was David Baron. He had many brothers. Among them, Mikhail Baron, Jakow Baron, and Semyon Baron, my great great grandfather. I know chances are very slim, but I still thought I'd try to find some info. Thanks.

I never knew that Etta was a step child until I was an adult. I simply knew her as my great aunt. She had no children. My Dad and his brothers knew she was not a Baron but didn't tell us. I believe she used the name Baron until she married. They told me the last name of her real father (which I can't think of at the moment) and they believe that Myrtle was married to him but I can't find any record other than their memories to prove this. My Dad went to Plainfield High School. My Mom did go to Joliet Township. Her name would have been Joyce Attaway during high school--perhaps you knew her. May I ask your name?
Wilma did live in Joliet on May Street, near a pharmacy that was on Plainfield Rd. I assume that is the pharmacy you mention. She was living in that house when she passed away.

Myrtle was my Mom's Aunt by marriage. My Mom never talked about her or your Grandmother Wilma. I wish she were here today so I could ask her about them.

In the 1930 census it listed Alfred 52, Mrytle 42, Wilma 17, and Etta 24. It didn't mention that Etta was a step-child. I don't know anything else. When did Etta die? Did she have children? I thought maybe your Dad or one of your Uncles would know something about her, because her children would be their first cousins.

I noticed Charles Gibson Baron died in 1900. He was probably 12 years old. I don't know what caused his death.

When I was young I asked my Mom about her relatives. She said that most of them were dead by the time she was born.

Did your Dad graduate from Joliet Township High School?
He and I would be third cousins.

Did Wilma live in Joliet by the Plainfield Avenue Drugstore?

I have searched the cemetary too. The man was not helpful but I found info at the Plainfield Library. Myrtle is there but she does not have a stone. You are absolutely right about Myrtle-that's what I get for working late at night-I read the wrong info. Myrtle Hendricks Baron died 12/26/1976. Her daughter Wilma, my grandmother, died 8/12/1988. Wilma was married to Dale Wilson Smith. Together they has three sons, the youngest of whom is my father. When Dale died, Wilma married again and they had one more son. So Wilma had 4 sons in all. Myrtle also had another daughter before Wilma, but not with Alfred. Her name was Etta and I am having trouble finding information about her father and if there was a marriage or not. Do you know anything about this story?

I had talked with a man fom the Plainfield Cemetery. He said that an Alfred W. Baron died in 1947, and that his wife Myrtle A. Baron died 12/29/1976. I don't know what year she was born.
You said that Wilma died 12/26/1976. It sounds as though mother and daughter died several days apart.
Herbert(my grandfather) and Alfred W.(your great great grandfather) were brothers, which would make Wilma and my Mom first cousins. Wilma would be my second cousin, and her children my third cousins. I have no idea how many children she had, and when they were born.
Wilma and my Mom didn't keep in touch with one another, so I didn't know Wilma or her family.
Herbert Baron married Evalyn (Eva) Cordelia Hartley. They were my Grandparents. He died before I was born. Yes, they had a daughter Dorothy Hartley Baron born in 1908. She died in January 2010 at the age of 101. She was my Mom.

From the 1930 census it shows that Alfred Baron's wife is Myrtle. Their children were Wilma and Etta. The census didn't show his wife to be Olive Hendricks Baron.

My parents and grandparents didn't take too many photographs. I think I have 1 or 2 of Laura Baron, but they were taken at a distance.

We lived on Williams Street near Plainfield Road.

Did your Grandmother Wilma live near the Plainfield Avenue Pharmacy?

I have Herbert marrying Eva C., whose maiden name I do not have, and having a daughter named Dorothy H Baron in 1909. So it this correct, is this your Mom? By the way, my name is Robin Smith Lif. I don't know any stories about Baron relatives in Joliet or Plainfield. I grew up in Joliet, and my grand mother and great grandmother were both still in Plainfield at that time. Alfred died long before I was born, but I have many warm memories of his wife Olive Hendricks Baron, who would be my great grandmother. I have asked my Dad if he remembers the family members you have mentioned. Maybe the names will jog a memory for him.

He and my Grandmother had one child who was my Mom. My Mom and your Grandmother Wilma were first cousins.
If your Grandmother lived in Joliet she and my Mom didn't communicate very often. I don't remember her.
I have a picture and newspaper article about Charles G. who my Mom referred to as Uncle Gene. He was coming to Joliet from California for a visit.
In 1882 George E. was born in Illinois. My Mom called him Uncle Ernie. We went to Planfield to visit with Uncle Ernie and Aunt Abbie quite often. They moved to South Gate, California to be near their sons.
They were married January 11, 1870 in Scarborough, York, England. She died in Bempton, York, England May 9, 1874.
They had a son - John George Baron born September 28, 1870.
He died September 17, 1875.

Are you a Plainfield-area person?
I have most of the info on Jordan and Laura back to England, including Jordan's parents and (I think) grandparents. Do you have any info on Jordan and Laura back in England beyond that?

I am trying to trace the birth of William BARON, born sometime from 1827 to 1829 in Gibraltar to James Baron and Margaret MURRAY ( married c. 1822). I would be most grateful if anyone can help.I am quite sure that they were not in Gibraltar as part of the Forces, and were in England, Blackburn, Lancashire for the birth of John Baron in 1823 and Thomas Ashton Baron in 1830.

I can't believe that your relatives were opera singers!
My aunt won a scholarship from the Metropolitan opera
to study in Italy. My grandfather played the cornet in the Czar's orchestra and sang professionally in the U.S.as did
my father. His sister played the accordion and his mother
played the Balalaika. There was only one uncle who was
a "listener".
The Benjamin tribe ran away from the other Israelites before
the diaspora and assimilated into the Franc and Norman
tribes. They had problems with the other tribes who tried
to kill them. There was no discussion about their near
or distant Jewish ancestry but it was acknowledged. No one
practiced any specific religion on that side of my family.
They married everyone. As children, my cousins and I
had no formal religion. There were wars in Europe
and records were burned, the communists changed the name
of towns. My dad had platinum blonde hair and looked
nordic and his siblings appeared very western European. I
was discouraged to visit churches or synagogues with my
friends who thought it was odd.(I was allowed to attend
a Lutheran church for the first 13 years of my childhood(?).
Very strange, isn't it? My dad mad fun of me when I had
a TV program on and was listening to any clergyman. I don't
think We'll ever find out since the name is internaional. My
Great grandfather landed on Ellis Island around 1903. His
son-in-law wasa Baron (my grandfather). He was extremely
enigmatic but what a voice.!

"tribe of Benjamin" indicates Judaism. Benjamin was one of the original 12 tribes of the Jewish people.

"aristocrat in Russian Georgia but wasn't Russian"
The belief that your grandfather (and or his ancestors) were aristocrats requires additional research to either prove or disprove.

The vast majority of Jews who were forced out of their homelands and chose to go east from what's today Lithuania, Latvia, Belarus, Poland, Ukraine etc (former Russian Empire)did so to escape pogroms, persecution and almost certain death.

www.jewishgen.org is a good place to start your search to learn more about your possible Jewish roots.

The surname BARON and variant spellings occurs throughout the former Russian Empire so more work is necessary to try to determine where exactly they may have lived before "Russian Georgia".

Good luck,
Eden Joachim
esjoachim@optonline.net
New York
Descendant of BARONs from Lithuania and Belarus who were also musically gifted (ggf was a Cantor, gf and his siblings were piano players, violin players and opera singers)

My father's name was Alexander Baron. He must been named
after someone. My grandparents never spoke about the past
or our family history but my father stated that we "started western civilization and on my great granfather's side
were descended from tribe of Benjamin (Jesus's relatives).
I have no idea of my grandfather's(Baron) ancestry. I only
know he was some kind of aristocrat in Russian Georgia but wasn't Russian. I think he was Scandinavian and German.
My cousins are very curious since there aren't too many
of us left. We all want to know who are ancestors really
were. A lot of secrets and misinformation is out there.
I expect that they didn't tell the truth on their death
certificates about their mother's maiden names etc.

a confused Baron
P.S. they were beautiful and artistically and musically
gifted(if that helps)

Have you tried the Polish Archives online? My husband's Baron family lived in what was Prussia until returned to Poland. We went to Poland to visit the cities they lived in and it was such a joy. Here is the URL for the archives. I did find a Martin Baron and Thresa Höhn in Niesiebędowice; Nüssdorf. You also can copy and paste to a translator program but it is written in German and Polish. You also can order the information from the archives. This appears to be land records. I have ordered wills from them. If you think this could be yours and want to order. Be aware that the archives is extremely slow. I do not know if they take paypal yet or not. I had to do bank transfers and the charges by the banks can be a wide range so check several banks before doing it. I have had good results other than just being so slow a turtle looks like a speeding bullet.
Hope this may help you.
Pat
I have found some information off the US Federal Census from 1900. It lists Martin Baron married to an Evan Simon (1862). She immigrated here in 1895 with two children...Teresa (1891 Poland) and Casper (1894 Poland), after her arrival she gave birth to 2 more children ....Mary (1896 PA) and Andrew (1899 PA) before my Grandfather (John J Baron - 1901 Illinois)In 1900 and 1901 they lived on Dekoven St in IL, says they were married for 10 years, so that would make all her children relatives if indeed the information on the census record is correct, but I can not find any information on Eva or her 4 children born before John. They all are listed in the census with the last name Baron. In 1930 Martin Baron was living with John Baron. Any information on Eva(n)or her children would be greatly appreciated. I am not sure the census listed the correct last name for Teresa,, Casper (which might even be Casimir, Mary and Andrew.
Michalina Baron

I am searching for information on my grandmother Michalina Baron. Her first name has several spellings...Michaeline, Michaelina, Michaline. Her Middle name was Frances and alot of people called her "Minnie". She was born in 1902 in Warsaw Poland. The records I have indicate that her maiden name was Gruczewicz. She had two sisters that I know of and one brother possibly. However, the names are all different. I have records for a Sister Stella Mosko (nee Gapszewicz (mother Anna Wojciechowski and Father Frank Gapszewicz)) born 1909 in the US lived in North Hammond, IN, the other sister all that I know for sure is her name was Mary and lived in either IN or IL and possibly married into the Payonk family, as for the brother I have postcards from the 1940's and 50's signed Walter, and 1 was signed Walter G. Walters. Any information on any other these people or my grandmother would be greatly appreciated and would help me straighten out the confusion with the different names so I can continue to locate records such as birth, immigration and parents. Michalina Baron was married to John J Baron May of 1923, she also passed in 1988 in Hammond, IN.
