Hello: I was doing a search for Joseph Barone and saw your post. I was born July 30, 1940, with the name Rosemary.
My mother was Betty Meyer, so some spelling thereof. Her real name was Hiendlmayr, and I don't know when she began using the former.
She gave me up for adoption in 44 or 45 to Sycamore, IL.
Could I be your relative? My name was changed when I was adopted to Rosanne. I was just married to Don Hillock and am now Rosanne Hillock.

Barone living in Manhattan, 1901

I am trying to obtain information about Gasara Barone, possibly Baron, born in Italy around 1875, and living in Manhattan N.Y. in 1901. His parents are listed as Francesco and Peppina. In 1903, he had a residence, maybe a second one, in Cleveland Ohio. I wish I had more personal information to post, but I don't. Any information would be most appreciated.

  Yes, we have the same Nick. I am thinking back, it was in the 90's that he told me he had met someone, I am guessing it was you. He said we look similar! Blonde, short,cute??? Nick and I were not really serious, he would just pop in and out of my life,  just a fun guy.  I remember --- I knew him when he was much younger-- then did not see him for a long time-- then he came back---he said he had a stroke, or maybe a heart attack, I forgot which. He was still the same great guy, but it took a lot out of him, looked older, not so much spring in his step.  I would like to stay in touch with you--- after all, maybe we are aspects of each other!  My private email is s7111@prodigy.net.mx  {I am living in Mexico}

Nick and I were married in '96 and he died in '99. We had a wonderful marriage but the air of mystery about him still bothers me. Met him in Palm Springs. He had a private investigation company and worked quite a bit for his age. After his death I have tried to find his family with no luck. I knew about the so-called mafia ties but never knew if that was a little stretched. He was very good to me but, as you said, he sorta had a false image he tried to portray. You are the only person I have ever talked with that knew him as long as you did. I once found some paperwork of his that listed a son, Dino. Have not been able to find the right Dino, however. Thank you so much for answering.......

Oh, boy, this is turning into a real mystery. Are we sure we have the same guy? The story I got from him had mafia family in New York. If he had a wife and 10 kids, I sure did not know. I don't think so beacause he was always traveling. I assumed he was born in the states, he had no accent at all. Nick Barone was his real name, and I remember he told me he was assuming a new name, he found someone in the obits who fit the profile, and I even helped him by putting him on my credit card, under that name. Then he did not pay the bill, which consisted of limos and flowers in Las Vegas{ he also went there a lot}, so I told the American Express his real name, and they did not charge me!!! Sorry, I just can not remember that name. He was quite a charactor, like I said, a con, but you could not help liking him! Were you related, or another girl friend? Just curious. Oh, yes, about incarceration, there was a time I did not see him for a long time, and when he re appeared, he said he had been in a Mexican jail! Said they thought he was involved in drugs, and he had to pay a lot to get out. But, this was not in the 50's, more like the 70's. Keep me posted, this is getting good!!

Told me he had six children and 10 brothers and sisters. Can't find anyone. Also said he came here from Italy at the age of 3. Said his parents and all siblings moved back to Italy. I know he was married but cannot find an ex-wife either. Someone in his family should at least know that he has passed away and where he is buried. What a mystery he was. You mentioned a name change....what was his real name, do you know? There was also some years that he was fuzzy on (the 50's) and now I wonder if he was incarcerated during that time. Hope not, but am beginning to wonder about everything. Thank you for your reply.

As far as I know, no children. And from New York, so maybe some family there. He seemed to not want to talk about the family much, and when I gave him a lead on getting a new client, he said he would not take the job if this guy was Italian!! What ever that means! He dated Zha Zha Gabor, and me, at the same time, how about that!! Said he wanted to take us shopping together.

I used to date Nick occasionally, when he was in San Francisco area. He was a private detective, liked to work on high profile cases. He often went to Baja California, Palm Springs, and had an office address in Beverly Hills . From New York. Good looking guy, and a bit of a con artist, but I liked him anyway! If you ever find him, I would love to see him again. I am Sunshine. Good luck, hope this helps.

I have his corrections records from 1953 to 1962 in California where he has a birthdate of 1895 in Missouri with a wife and child noted but not named. My mother was born in 1953 in San Francisco. Would love to know where this man comes from and a bit of family history. Can't locate him on census information or anywhere else. He had a noted alias of Lazzeri and when I look at Giusseppe Lazzara or Joseph I get hundreds of names but the dates don't match to what little I have.

Joseph Ross Lazzara or Giuseppe Lazzara or Lazzeri??

My maternal grandfather's name was Joseph Ross Lazzara. I have an alias of Lazzeri and have some old corrections records from 1953 to 1962 in California. We know nothing of this man or where he comes from. Can't find him on any census information with his only known birthdate of 1895 in Missouri. I always thought he must have come across from Italy or Sicily. I believe he had a sister named Rose but did not know his wife or childs name. My mother was adopted and illegitimate.

This is for Nancy Barone. I read your post, Nick sounds like a guy I knew back in the 70s, 80s and 90s. He said he was a private detective, worked mostly in the Beverly Hills area, but often went to San Francisco, also to Mexico. Said he was from NY. Tall, handsome guy, charmer, But kind of a con. Was in the mist of changing his name, when I last saw him. He would be maybe 88 now. If this rings a bell, get in touch, I sometimes wonder if he is still alive.

Barone Family - Castellammare Del Golfo, Sicily to Ellis Island to San Francisco

The story that's been passed down to me:

Angelo Barone came over first aboard the steam ship Madonna, perhaps undocumented. (Though the docs. do not support this) and then sent for his family 15 months later. Maria (maiden name Curatolo), with her daughter Rosa and two sons, Antonino (Tony) and Giuseppe (Joe) left Sicily aboard the steam ship Argentina in March 1921. During the voyage, Maria was befriended by a young man (passenger #8) named Antonio Caravella. Antonio arranged for the family to stay with his uncle (and sponsor) Benedetto Gambino at 157 Mulberry St. in N.Y. until Angelo Barone was able to bring them to Endicott N.Y. where he was living.

Sometime after that, the family moved to San Francisco and had two more children, Frank and Peter. Peter is my grandfather. He had three kids: Ronald, Kenneth and Carolyn. Ron is my father, and he lives in New England currently, while my aunt and uncle still live in the bay area. In the early or mid eighties, Pete and Tony were on the east coast visiting my father, and they took a trip to Schenectady, NY and apparently found aunts/uncles/cousins.

I'm looking for any information about Angelo and Maria's brothers and sisters and their families.

Thanks,
Tony

Dear Dr. Cavallaro,
Thank you for taking the time to reply. I admire you for understanding there are important stories to be told (empirically) and doing it properly. Research is my passion (& degree) so I feel kind of honored, to have grown up in Poughkeepsie with so many beautiful Italian people and heritage. The Italians worked very hard collectively (& with the Church), to educate/build Mt. Carmel (Cataract) Square and beyond. Thank you very much, for clarifying Cataract--I 'thought' it became Mt. Carmel Square, but I have a need to "verify". Not many people then had the time (working so hard) to tell this story nor connect the transitions...

I started out with a family tree. Then many beautiful stories, then community history and so forth. Personally I felt that the Italian Migration into Dutchess County (& periphery across Hudson, etc.) was much bigger... It seems more recent generations have a little more time to contemplate mortality and that's when I thought a Museum would serve the generations--NOT realizing that I do not feel alone in this... In fact, with all humility--I even thought that some "Statue?" in Mt. Carmel Square may also befit its name--forgive me if reaching, it is only a thought, meant to honor those before us...

I'll check your website, and would love to see your Documentary when ready. I will contact Mr. Morabito, yes. After amassing thousands of records and personal Ancestral Artifacts (for Pok Italy Museum) I want be ready to Catalog, Cite Source, Create questions for Interviews to shape the research--Of course, a Trip to SICILY & ITALY are evident. Currently I work for 2 Libraries (in Lake County, FL) & belong to Pastfinders Group [Geneology, etc.].

Thank you for remembering the Barone & Beni families as well. You are doing wonderful work!!
Grazie e Ciao,
Lisa Beni *********** Pls. See Attachment !!

Hello Lisa
Cataract Square was renamed Mt. Carmel Square after the
church and school were built in 1910 and 1935. I used to work in Nick Beni's Restaurant making pizza many years ago.
There are still many relations of the Barone family in Linguaglossa which I go to see every few months when I visit there.
There is a group which meets at Caffe Bocca (14 Mt. Carmel Place where I used to live over the store) to develop a Little Italy museum. Contact Eric Morabito the owner he would be glad to hear from you. I always say hello to the relatives of the Barone family when I go to Linguaglossa.
I go often because I have written three history books on the First World War in Italy and lecture in Italy, Germany and Australia.
My web site is www.worldwaronehistory.com. The books are available in the local library. I am now making an eight hour TV documentary on the samne subject for a prominent cable company to be narrated by myself and European professors of history. I have been to Rome and obtained
original combat film from the Italian Army and also from Vienna.
Best wishes
Gaetano V.
I am researching Phillip Gervaise. I believe his father is Anthony Gervaise and mother is Maria Barone, both from Valderma Sicily. I found a census record where both Lena and Josephine were mentioned. It says Phillip was born in 1914 so he was a year younger than Josephine. If you have any information or especially family pictures, I would really appreciate it. If you want to see my tree, just let me know. Thanks. Ardis

Dear Frances Schneider,
Thank you for taking the time to reply. I wasn't sure if there would be a reponse so I didn't check back promptly. After this post, I found so much Barone info (in Pok)--such the original 3 Barone Bros. incorporated 1915 & started their Produce business. Also found out that these 3 Barone Brothers (from Linguaglossa) had 20 siblings plus their parents in Italy. A few more Barones migrated here.. Bartolo Sr. was the 2nd oldest--the oldest stayed in Italy.. I'm trying to get as much info by research, so I can then have more relevant questions to discuss with family elders to honor them and further shape this story.

Ultimately I would love to write this beautiful story, including Poughkeepsie's Little Italy Community--and add family momentos plus artifacts I have to donate to a Museum for future generations. My degree is in Research. When we're all gone, at least there will be a noble, documented reference starting from over 100 years ago.

Thank you so much for your reply--if you think of anything other direction, please let me know.
Ciao,
Lisa Beni

Thank you so much Dr. Cavillaro. I am doing Family geneology including Artifacts. After this post--I found a "PokJournal article" dated early 1920's stating (if accurate) the 3 Barone Brothers (Bartolo Sr./Carmelo/ Antonio) came from LINGUAGLOSSA (Catania) Sicily, yes--leaving their parents & 20 other siblings behind. The article stated there was a total of 23 Barone siblings....

Another document states "Barone Bros." incorporated in 1915. Can you clarify a street for me please? WHERE is "CATARACT Square/Street"?? Was it pre-Mt. Carmel Square before Our Lady of Mt. Carmel School was built? It doesn't seem to exist in current records.
...I believe you may have been my mother's GI Physician. My mom (passed away, rest in peace) is Rita BARONE Beni, a great lady. My goal is to assemble/chron this beautiful Poughkeepsie Italian History and maybe find a Museum to share for generations to come.

Anything you can suggest (or people to call/interview).
Thank you and feel free to keep in touch.
Ciao,
Lisa Beni

I can't give you statistics, but I lived next door to
Bart and Anne Marie Barone. I remember your mother and
your Aunt Francesca always dressing very elegantly.
Your grandmother was dressed somewhat better than the
other Italian ladies in the community.

Did anyone tell you that the front of your grandfather's
building, over the restaurant, had a huge window viewing
room of Mt. Carmel Place. Also your Dad's restaurant
was extremely popular with the people visiting their
daughters at Vassar College. They loved to come down and
eat the Italian food.

I don't know how you can trace your family tree, but I do
know the Barone Brothers came from Linguaglossa, Catania,
Sicily. Of course, there are tons by that name in Linguaglossa. You may want to look up Anne Marie Barone
in Pleasonton, NY or Pleasant Valley, NY I'm not sure
which (I think that's where she is) and see
if she can help any. My mom Carmela ( Melina) spoke often of an uncle who at the age of 14 left Cosenza for America .
From what my mom told me these siblings were orphand , Nonno Biagio was a 17 yr old at the time , he was the eldest . Zio Bennedetto , whom I had the honor of knowing, was but a toddler left in my grandfather's care . Zia Maria married and left for Uraguay . My mom asked many times to try and find out what became of her uncle . What a small world. Nonno Biagio married Rosina Porco they had 4 children
Arcangelo Barone , current;y in Fiumefreddo
Teresina (married Luigi Marcellino ) lives in the Bronx
Assunta ( Married Vincezo Frangella) also in the Bronx
Carmela , Melina ( married Egidio Porco) my mom currently in Montreal Canada

This is so wonderful If you could share any Pictures my mom would be so happy
Rosella Porco
Hi - just curious - My family has a Vincenzo & Vincenza Bellanca from Valledolmo. Vincenza came to the US with (I think) 8 children, and Vincenzo stayed there in Valledolmo with his son Charles. Unsure who he married. The sister you mentioned who also married a Bellanca - do you know her name?

Re: Barone, Dunkirk, NY

Perhaps we know one another? I am Marcia Barton (Barone) I My grandfather's name was John (Giovanni) and i believe his brother was named Luigi and that his father was Rosario - from Valledolmo. I cannot find what i think is a correct listing on any manifest either. I remember that his brother lived on Deer Street in the 1950's. I think that was Louie - he had daughters named Lucie and Mary (Notte). I think he was 17 when he came here in about 1901 - 02. There are so many Barone's from Valledolme. Maybe it would help to piece together what we have in Dunkirk and then go back??

"The Barone Brothers"--from Sicily to Poughkeepsie, NY

Hello. I am also doing a Barone Family Tree. Here's a little timeline:

my maternal Grandparents
Antonino Barone (aka Antonio/Anthony)-Born Approx. 1887
married,
Antoinetta Trabasso (born 1899 in Wappinger Falls, NY
near Poughkeepsie, NY)
1) Antonino called Antonio married Antoinetta and they had 10 children--6 survived: Carmelo, Fransceschina, Angelo, Rita, Marilyn, and Tony

2) Antonino supposedly came from Sicily WITH BROTHERS and THEY built the "1st Ward"/Little Italy approx. 1900...
This 1ST WARD was in POUGHKEEPSIE, New York and was in the MOUNT CARMEL SQUARE CHURCH block--which they helped build and support.

3) Grandpa ANTONINO owned 2 Delafield Street (later became Nick Beni's, and currently Pippy's Restaurants).

4) I believe Antonino's brothers were BARTOLO (son Dr. Bartolo Barone--Notre Dame, INDIANA + daughter ANNE MARIE) and CARMELO (married ROSARIA/Dozata/Aunt Sarah with children Jean, Fran, Frankie).

5) One of Antonino's daughters named RITA BARONE is MY MOTHER, who later married NICK BENI...my father

Therefore my parents are Nick Beni & Rita Barone Beni.

I am trying to piece together the period from MIGRATION from SICILY---if they migrated together, when they REGROUPED.
--Antonino owned a little Restaurant and obtained GRAPES from across Poughkeepsie's Hudson River from Highland and made homemade wine for his Restaurant

--Uncle Bartolo was a Banker

--Uncle Carmelo owned a Liquor Store

They all lived in the above mentioned Poughkeepsie's 1st Ward, Mount Carmel Square, Little Italy--their business not more than 1 1/2 miles apart from home base (they lived only blocks away from eachother).

2 Delafield Street, Poughkeepsie is located almost underneath the Poughkeepsie Railroad Bridge (not defunct) and a few blocks from Poughkeepsie Railroad Station--also known as THE MID-HUDSON VALLEY.

I KNOW THIS IS A LOT--HOWEVER, I AM A RESEARCH MAJOR, AND IF THIS INFORMATION CLICKS WITH YOU, YOU WILL KNOW...
