Jane BARR, daughter of Robert BARR and Jannet PETTIGREW

Seeking information on Jane, who married and died in England. Her married name is unknown to date.

Does anyone identify with this couple? See narrative following:

"Mr. Barr comes of sound Scotch stock. Now, at the age of seventy, he is a very well-preserved man. He is one of a family of twelve children, all of whom lived to the age of twenty-one years, and six of whom now survive. He was born in Renfrewshire, Scotland, June 21, 1825, son of Robert Barr and Janet (Pettiker)[PETTIGREW] Barr. Robert Barr was a joiner, and supported his family in Scotland by working at his trade. Becoming discontented there, he made a preliminary prospective trip to New Brunswick, and soon after, in 1827, he emigrated with his family, then consisting of four children, to a farm in Lower Canada, in a new and wooded country. He was a poor man, and sought a cheap home. On the farm he thus settled he lived through life, and died aged seventy-five years, his wife surviving to the age of eighty-six. Their family was as follows: Janet, now Mrs. Gilmour Danskin, of Iowa county, Iowa; Jane, who married and died in England; James, subject of this sketch; Mary, who married and died in Michigan; Robert, of British Columbia; John, who died in Lower Canada; William, of Indiana; Margaret, widow of George Maxwell, of Lower Canada; Elizabeth, who married and died in Iowa; Isabel, who married and died in Lower Canada; Peter of Lower Canada; and Allan, who died in Lower Canada.”

Commemorative Biographical Record of the Upper Wisconsin Counties of Waupaca, Portage, Wood, Marathon, Lincoln, Oneida, Vilas, Langlade and Shawano. Chicago: J. H. Beers & Co., 1895. pp. 130-131
Thanks, David. No, we didn't know any of that, and yes, our Barrs were Catholic. I don't think anyone in my husband's immediate family has been to Buncrana in about forty years, though we're considering going up there the next time we're in Ireland visiting family. It's always fun to learn something new about the family.

Maureen

I don't often reply to the threads about the Barr family because they tend not be related to me however your message did, although I am sure looking at your name there is no connection apart from the Barr family I am related too come from Buncrana, County Donegal, my family of Barrs originally came from Derry and moved to Buncrana in the 1930's, so it was interested to see the Barrs from Buncrana mentioned. the reason I am sure we are not connected is my Barrs were staunch Protestants and I imagine (Doherty are Catholic) your family of Barrs were as I just mentioned Catholic, I know that the two families although not connected were all good friends, Barrs the butcher has long since gone from the main street of the town but the shop still remains and up until last year the Barr name was still above the door, opposite was the Plaza cinema and dance hall also owned by the Barr family and in the middle of the town was a buildings merchants shop again belonging to the Barr family, maybe you already knew all this,,, hope you find this of interest, David Hathaway

Hi, I've done extensive research on my husband's family. His grandmother was a Barr, and most of the men in her family were butchers. However, they were all originally from Buncrana, County Donegal, and also lived in Derry and Glasgow at various times.

Are you sure your Barrs are from Antrim?

Maureen Murphy Doherty
New Jersey, USA

This information on Atwood Barr is consistent with my research and I believe his father was James Barr born about 1834 in Ashland Co. Ohio and there my trail runs dry. My assumption is James and his wife Harriet both died young and thier children (Atwood and Dora) were raised by James' sister Mary Purdy (as you stated). I have more history on Harriet Smith, however I'm running into dead ends on the Barr side. Does anyone have any information on James Barr (parents/siblings)? This was an old thread and I'm hoping my question finds some new answers. Thanks everyone, and good luck in your research!
Thank you so much! Respiratory problems have affected several memebers of this family. This information is great. A lot of information I have been able to discover has been that this is the same family. My oldest brother was telling me that our grandfather told him once that our last name was Bare, but he (and I reckon his siblings) changed their last name to Barr. He couldn't remember why our grandfather said it changed, but there was a serious reason why they started using Barr instead of Bare. This was Grant Judson (Bare) Barr.

While browsing around rootsweb, I found some information that will take you back another generation. I am forwarding the information although I can't verify it myself. I think that the Barr's and Bare's of Ashe co. NC are all related based on what I have been told. They are most likely the descendants of Henry Bare born about 1753. You might consider having a male Barr descendant in your family DNA tested to see if they match those proven to have descended from the Ashe co. NC Barr family. Good luck on your search.

Jordan Grant BARR was born on Feb 9, 1894. He died about Feb 1979 in Virginia.

INDIVIDUAL NOTES:
- Given name was 'Grant' Parents: Matthew Barr and Ellen Leona Henderson
Spouse: Pearl Brewer.

Matthew BARR was born on Jun 29, 1859 in Ashe County, North Carolina. He died on Apr 18, 1915 in Washington County, Virginia of Asthma or Emphysema. He was buried in Washington County, Virginia.

INDIVIDUAL NOTES:
Personal records of Zane Barr, dated August 1997:
- Buried 21 Apr 1915
- Respiratory disease has affected several of his descendants
Spouse: Matthew BARR and Ellen Leona HENDERSON were married about 1884 in Grayson County, Virginia.
He also wrote the History of the Barr Family. I am wondering if there is any place to find a funeral sermon he did for Isaiah McDowell at the Springfield church on about Dec. 21st, 1882. Isaiah died Dec. 18th, 1882 in Wolf Creek, Pennsylvania. I am looking for the genealogy information this sermon could contain.

Thank you.

I know that this is probably a very long shot, but here goes.

My ggg-grandfather, David Barr was born in Scotland about 1794. Where? I don't know.
However, what I do know is that he lived at least one year in Port Glasgow, Scotland before emigrating to Mactaquac, otherwise known as Scotch Lake Settlement in New Brunswick, Canada.
He left Port Glasgow in October 1815 and arrived via the ship, The Favourite in St. John, N.B. in 1816.
Thus far, I have had no luck locating David Barr before his departure. I know of his living in Port Glasgow as I have seen a petition for land records that made that statement.

Thanks for any help. As I said, it is a long shot, but who knows?

Ben Barr
Years ago my father showed me a copy of a poem he wrote.
barrs in Glasgow

Hi, I am trying to determine who the parents of Marion Barr were. Marion married James Barr (occ. mason)in 1825, Barony, Glasgow.
I believe they had 5 children: Margaret 1826 Barony, James 1828 Barony, Barbara 1831 Barony, John 1834 Gorbals, John 1838 Gorbals.
James (senior) is with Margaret, James (junior), and John in the 1841 census.
It is possible that James (senior) remarried in 1842 to Jane Moffat and had further children. The will of James senior gives all to Jane and Jane's will mentions her eldest and then concentrates on her youngest children.
Interestingly one of the 2 witnesses to Jane's will is Mary R McMillan, the daughter of Margaret. Also, the 1851 and 1861 censuses have a John Barr - son - living with James (mason or builder) and Jane, and the age of John is consistent with being the John of James and Marion's marriage.

If anyone has any further information about Marion, or whether the James Barr that married Marion is the same as the one that married Jane Moffat, or haev any information about John Barr born 1838 to James and Marion Barr, that would be greatly appreciated.
I have to agree this is one mixed up family! I have a Samuel Barr b. 1796 in Ireland listed as coal digger - no surprise there. He married Martha Mary Smith b. 1806 in Ireland. Their son David, my ggrandfather, b. 1850 in Ohio left home to work. At 14 he returned home to find his family was gone from Jefferson County Ohio or Pennsylvania. He moved west to Prarie du Chen, Wisc. then to Minnesota.

Re: Barrs from Ballymena, Co. Antrim, Northern Ireland

Hi there,

I have read the various comments about the "Barrs" with interest. The following may assist some of you. My maiden name was Barr. My father Samuel Wylie Barr was born in Glasgow, his father John Barr was born in Ballywatermoy, Agohill, Ballymena, Antrim. John Barr was one of five children the others were jane, Agnes, Samuel and Martha. John was the only one to marry. John's parents were Samuel Barr and his wife Jane. Jane's maiden name was Millar. Samuel's parents were James Barr and his wife Jane, maiden name Wylie. You can see how my father ended up with Wylie as a middle name. My father was called after his uncle, who in turn was called after his father.
I was in my early 20's when my great aunt Martha Barr died in her late 90's and she told me that the family had moved from Antrim for employment reasons. Samuel, Jane and their five children all appear in the Scottish census returns of 1901. I am aware from conversations with my late great aunt that they had many relatives in the states. Until several years ago I did have a press clipping from presumably an American newspaper which listed many members of the Barr family attending a Thanksgiving dinner. I have misplaced this paper, but live in hope that I'll find it one day! I know that my great aunt Martha Barr was born in Ballywatermoy on the 1st September 1885 and she died on the 19th April 1982 age 96. Ballywatermoy was a very small place and I suspect that all the Barrs in the area were closely related.
I also understand that my grandfather's family were Brethern. I'm not and I do not know much about that side of things as my grandmother was not of the same denomination. it may be that the Barrs were of a different Presbyterian faith. Irish and Scottish family names do tend to follow naming patterns and I can see this quite clearly from my own family tree. Incidentally my grandfather John Barr had three children, my father Samuel and two daughters, Jane and Margaret. This latest Jane was called after both her grandmother and great-grandmother, the Margaret was named after her maternal aunt. I hope all this info helps someone.
Regards
Alison (full baptismal name Margaret-Alison Pryce Barr)
