Sam, I am not familiar with those names. I just found out from my brother, Bart Baranco, that Salvatore did not come with my grandfather (Frank Baranco) to the US from Cefalu; rather, Frank came over with two older sisters, either sent by Salvatore or sent by other relatives after Salvatore died, likely because of the hard times in Sicily then.

My father, Don Baranco Sr, graduated from LSU about 1928. He was born in Houma, LA. Don

Hello, cousin! My grandfather, Joe, was Uncle Philip's little brother. (They looked so much alike!) Both gentlemen passed away about a year apart in the early 1960s when I was a very little girl. I recall Aunt Mildred as being a very nice lady. My father often mentions cousin Carolyn. Please find me on Facebook at www.facebook.com/veronica.barranco.marks.

Sam, my brother, Bart and Connie Baranco, of Everett, WA, traveled to Cefalu about five years ago and were able to access the town registry and talk to some of our relatives there. He told me that there apparently was a clerical error when our grandfather (Frank Baranco) and his father (our greatgrandfather Salvatore Barranco) came through Ellis Island. It is believed Salvatore thought it would be easier to spell(and more American sounding!) with one "r", and never had it corrected. Don

Greetings, Donald! Would you happen to know why the second "r" was dropped from your surname? Is that a typo? My family also is from Cefalu, but we've always had two r's. My great grandfather was Dominic Barranco. One of his sons was named Frank Barranco. They lived in Pine Bluff, Ark.

Re: Baranco Surname

So here's what I have in my notes:
The surname Barranco is derived from the Spanish word meaning "deep break made by mountain floods; cleft; glen."
Once everyone was known by a single name. As the population increased people traveled and mixed, found others with the sames names and overcame the confusion by taking an extra name to identify themselves. These were adopted in accordance with fairly general principles. Thus a man named John who lived in a glen or cleft in the hills might be knows as "John (of, at or in the) cleft or glen" - i.e. John Barranco, in order to distinguish him from others of the same Christian name. In the course of time the cognomen became hereditary in what we now term surnames, ceasing to have any reference to the bearer's place of residence.
Arms which may be described heraldically as Vert, between a rock issuing from each flank, a Saracen's head proper, on his head a turban striped argent and gules, ornamented at the front with a crescent argent, in chief issuing from the sinister flank an arm in armor embowed holding a sword argent, are those of a Castilian family named Barranco, of the district of Vaillarcayo, Burgos, who proved their nobility in the Royal Chancellery of Valladolid in 1549, 1630 and 1755. Writers in the past have attributed symbolism to the tinctures and charges of heraldry - thus argent (silver) is said to denote Peace and Sincerity; gules (red) Military Fortitude and Magnanimity; and vert (green), Hope, Joy and (sometimes) Loyalty in Love; whilst the term "proper" means that an object is depicted in its natural colors. The rocks are intended as a cant or pun upon the surname (an ancient and favorite heraldic device) for they, or rather the space between them, represent a cleft in the mountains or a glen. The Saracen's head probably alludes to the wars against the North African Moors who occupied large areas of Spain in the Middle Ages and the arm in armor with sword is an obviously martial symbol.

- no idea where my grandmother got this - their is no source documented or date.

Mike

My great grandmother was a Barranco from Cefalu (Salvadora, daughter of Stefano, son of Stefano)

Story from my grandmother was that the Barrancos left Spain due to "problems with the Church"

When she and Giuseppe Scalco arrived at the Port of New York in 1901, they came with a large group from Cefalu - including what I suspect were cousins

About a third of these were headed for Baltimore, according to the document I have a copy of

Our Barrancos made it to Port Arthur, Texas - where there was a large Sicilian population

Futher family stories suggest they left for Louisiana to get away from social problems in the Port Arthur community

Interesting note on the "gate that surrounds the church"

I have a yearbook with the name of Wilbert Victor Baranco. Could this possibly be one of your relatives? The book is from McKinley High School Baton Rouge LA. It has much history and I know someone out there probably has relatives in the book. It is the first time a yearbook was published for this school and is dated 1928. It is currently listed on ebay. I will be happy to look up names for you also. Please let me know if you are interested. Thank you.
My great-grandfather, Dominic Barranco, was from Cefalu, Sicily. In the early 1900s, he and his brothers entered the United States through New Orleans, La. I've been told they were grocers and scattered throughout the South. I am not sure of the number of brothers or their names, but understand they settled in Beaumont, Texas, in and around Greenville, Miss., and in New Orleans, La.

Dominic was married to Sarah Battaglia Barranco, also from Cefalu. They had several children, but a couple of them died when they were very young. Those who reached adulthood included: Frank, Angelina, Santena, Phillip, Mary Grace, and Joseph. The family lived in Pine Bluff, Ark. They were members of St. Joseph Catholic Church. Most are buried in the family plot in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery.

I believe your husband very well may be my paternal cousin, a couple of times removed. When my great uncle on my father's side died, his wife remarried and her new husband adopted their young children.

My great uncle's parents were Dominic Barranco and Sarah Battaglia Barranco of Cefalu, Sicily. He had several siblings, including Angelina, Santena, Mary Grace, Phillip and Joseph. His youngest brother, Joseph, is my grandfather.
My father is from Mexico and migrated to the states and settled in Pennsylvania. There is only few more here, and were all family. I know of some in NYC, my aunt, and in California, also family.

There is a Benedetto Barranco who came to America in 1902 and traveled with two of my relatives: Giuseppe and Pasquale Valenziano. Benedetto's destination was Chicago, Illinois where he was to join his uncle, who he said was Pasquale Valenziano (not the same person he was traveling with.) I believe the person he was joining is my Great-grandfather.

Also, I am particularly interested in finding out if anyone knows why so many people left Cefalu around this time.

Would love to communicate with anyone who is interested in the same people & places.

lgvtalk@gmail.com

Hi;
My name is Jose Diaz Barranco, The name comes from my mothers (Denise Barranco) side. Her father Virgil Barranco was born to Virgil Barranco Sr. and Amelia Tomassette; He (my grandfather) was born in Europe; did some time in the British Navy, Migrated to Dominican Republic where he died in 1988. My son is working on a family tree and he and myself thought it would be a good idea to try and contact some family and keep contact via email; maybe even meet at some point in time. We live in New York, U.S.A. My son is 12 and I myself am 34.

Thank you for your time
Jose.

I'm sorry but I do not have any information or known connection to Mercedes Leon Bazan. I am also at a loss to explain how my own G4grandfather (Cipriano (Ciprian) Barranco de Leon) came to have the 'de Leon' portion of his name. Neither his parents nor his Grandparents family names included 'Leon". Cipriano Barranco was married in Havana and died in Puerto Principe. Do you, by any chance, have birth or marriage information on your Mercedes Leon Bazan? I have one other source to check, but it would help if I knew the date and place of her birth(or baptism) and marriage.

Stephen Barranco

Hi Fernando,
SInce my original response (Nov 1999) I have not found any information relating to Barranco line in Columbia or South America. I am now able to take my Barranco line back to Habana 1666, but have not found the Barranco passage from Spain to Cuba yet. I will keep a lookout for your Ofelio Barranco born around 1880s or 1890s and also for Maria Manotas de Barranco.

Regards, Stephen Barranco
