Yes it could be. I have found records that spell Barratt with both an "at" and "et"

I have found that Sarah Barratt was the two children's (Mary Jane & George) stepmother. On the death certificate of Mary Jane it lists the mother as 'Mary Brown'

William Henry Barratt is my 3x Great Grandfather which makes Theophilus Barratt my 4x Great Grandfather.

Hihannah, just read your post with interest on the Barratt sweet factory,my mother worked there during the late 1950s up to 1966,her name was Elsa Borrill and lived in woodgreen,my biological father worked there too,his name was Bert stratford he was a engineer there,i am keen to trace any info about him,i had never met him although he apparantly paid for my upkeep until i reached 18,i dont know to much about him,no idea what he looks like, what i do know is he passed away in 1992,and he had family and i believe i have step brothers and sisters some where, i wonder if you have any info on record or factory photographs of employees which he might be on,or know anyone who might be able to help me also. regards Gary Borrill

Dear Hannah

I have just seen your post and wondered if you found any info out?? We have been tracing the Barratt Sweet history the past few months since we discovered our Evans and Edwards ancestors were working in the sweet factory and heavily involved with it - quite possibly married to the Barratts.
Have you traced your family tree back - did you find any info? There is a video on the barratts sweet factory in wood green by a david evans on a hornsey / haringey council website. We could be related. It also is possible it goes back to the browning / barratt family who held a sugar plantation but at the end of the slave trade they had to go into sweet manufacture to continue making money.

Would love to share information with you and share tree info.

Do get back to me or send me a message

regards

Vasilia

I think it's so nice to have things like that to link you to the past.

I don't think the Arthur I saw was the right one then as it was an 1881 census and he was married to a Harriet Barratt with a Florence as a daughter aged 12. Harriet had died by the 1891 census though as he was down as widowed.

The family tree maker programme sounds good - I'll have to look that up. I don't know of lostcousins.com I'll have a go on that later.

I am on facebook, not twitter though, I think I can be found on it with the email address rgallagher001@gmail.com although I use rebeccagallagher@hotmail.co.uk as my main email address. Please feel free to contact me either way - it would be great to keep in touch.

Kind Regards,

Rebecca

Actually I did not know that Arthur was in the Boer War until my aunt gave me the banner, as well as an old postcard with a picture on the front of a group of soldiers; he was apparently in it somewhere. I think he had sent it to my great-aunt but it was not completely legible. I have only found him once in the census, 1881, but found Jane, his wife, in the 1901 census, listed as head of household; that is probably when he was away soldiering. She died in 1903, and the youngest daughter, born in 1899, was raised in the Barnardo Homes. She was my great-aunt; I vaguely remember meeting her at least once when I was a child.

And I understand nothing about first cousins or first removed :) my Family Tree Maker program told me that, haha.

Do you know about LostCousins.com?

Are you on Facebook? I am. I am also on Twitter, although I have never actually sent one to anyone; I basically just get stuff from different news outlets. :)

My e-mail is canadianxstitcher@yahoo.ca

Beth - ;)

Hi Beth,

I'm impressed you know that we are 4th cousin's once removed I would not know how to work that out!

I should have George O the second on my family tree as I did know about him, but I don't think he is for some reason. I will add him now though.

I think George O the second and William Frederick were brothers.

I found an Arthur Barratt who was a boot manufacturer in Bethnal Green by accident. I know you've learnt a lot more about him now since you first started this thread, but I can find it again if necessary - I'm sure you've researched it all properly by now though!

That's really interesting that you know you had relations in the Boer War and even better that you had a banner from it :)

Thank you so much for all your information and help.

Kind Regards,

Rebecca

Hi again Rebecca, not Chris, but according to my FTM, the first George O would have been your ancestor, as he was mine. The lines diverged from there, my ancestor was George O the second and yours was William Frederick, father of William Henry. Wlliam Henry married Catherine, who may have been Irish but was apparently born in Bristol.

I think, according to my FTM, that you are my 4th cousin, once removed.

BTW, my paternal grandmother married a man named Gallagher. He was not the father of her children however; she married him later.

Beth - ;)

Actually Arthur did not emigrate to Canada but his daughter Florence did - she was my grandmother. She moved to Ontario, where I grew up, but now I am in Alberta. I can find no record of him after his wife Jane died in 1903. And definitely with the name Onesimus, we must be on the same track. :) I know that Arthur was a soldier and was in South Africa during the Boer War, as I have a banner (long scarf-type of thing that my aunt gave me) that says "Relief of Ladysmith" on it.

Not sure how I would view your tree, but will poke around a bit.

Beth- ;)

Hi Chris,

Thanks for contacting me.

My Grandmothers maiden name was Gladys Vera Barratt b.1929.

Her father (my great grandfather) was Herbert Barratt b.1889 and his father was William Henry Barratt b. about 1854

I'm not sure if this means anything to you at all, hopefully you can see my family tree and might recognise some of this.

We were always told that William Henry fell in love with the "Irish maid" and despite being sent on a grand tour by his family to get him away from her, upon his return they went off and got married. Because of this William was supposedly disinherited from the family business. How true this is though, I'm not very sure!

Please let me know if there is anything I've said that rings a bell (I didn't want to list everyone as it may not be relevant.)

Whereabouts do you fit into the Barratt line?

I currently live in a place called Cheshire in England after I left my home town of Nottingham in England. My mum moved to Nottingham from Bristol.

I think I found Arthur who Beth referred to previously in one of the census' in Bethnal Green. Not sure if that is familiar at all?

Kind Regards,

Rebecca

Hi Beth,
thanks for replying so quickly. I can see that we have connected to the same tree, although my search, or talks to my Nan, have not shown that we have any connection to an Arthur who emigrated to Canada. I do have George O I & II in my tree, and with a name like Onesimus, I'm sure we must be all on the right track.
I'm new to ancestry, are you able to view my tree?
Thanks again for the reply
Rebecca

Thanks for replying Rebecca. I have learned more about my great-grandfather Arthur's family since my request but I am sure there is more that I do not know. I do know that his father was George O. II, born 1830, his grandfather was George O, born 1808 and that John and Sarah were his great-grandparents; John born abt 1781 and died in 1849. Someone sent me a printout of many of the Barratt's, but did not know anything about Arthur, not even who he married. I think Arthur was a career soldier but that is all I know.

Beth - ;)

BARRATT family from Burslem, UK.

My Barratt ancestors immigrated to Australia in 1840. William Joseph Barratt married a Mary Ann Holland in London and returned to live in Burslem. He died at the age of 36. He left three children - William James, Frederick and Ann. Mary Ann remarried a Robert Higgins and the whole family left for Australia.
I am particularly interested in finding references to William Joseph's father. All we know is that his surname was Barratt and that he married a widow and was a farmer in Burslem where the family had lived for several generations. He was taken as a recruit to the Napoleonic Wars and survived. On his return his wife had remarried (name unknown) so he left for places unknown.

Any help would be gratefully received as our whole family has come up against a dead end in this research.

It is quite confusing and have searched for hours on end with no luck. If you find anymore out then please let me know if you don't mind.
