This sometimes happands as I'm sure you know, dit names are often the cause of this as is the fact that people at least early on aren't always literate, etc.

I'm having a hard time tracing my Barre line. See my last post. I found a record of a man named Antoine Lefevbre de la Barre and wondered if their was a conection.

Has anyone found a time, etc when the Lefevbre named changed to Barre?

Thanks

I do not yet have any southern BARRE connections. Seems like they are pronounced like BAR and may be more French. Ours is pronounced like BEAR, and some generations ago was spelled BARE. Mine are from the German-French border region, but I think were most likely German. (Although Germany as a country did not exist then). Some did migrate out west during the gold rush, and I am not sure I have accounted for all 3 brothers yet though. One of which I think was John so there's a slight possibility. ( I have at probably 4 named John, a couple close in age.) Thanks for replying, and keep me in mind if something comes up again.

Wilfrid's father was Solyme Barré married to Geogiana Bessette (both of Richelieu). Solyme had at least 2 brothers who moved to the U.S. from Quebec, one of whom was named Prospère.
Isaac Barre/Richard Barre 18th c; Barre MA, VT, PA

Hello all,
I've done a little surfing lately and discovered that Barre, MA; Barre, VT; and Wilkes-Barre, PA were named after Col. Isaac Barre. Isaac was of Irish descent, and was a fairly high ranking officer in the British military during the French and Indian War. He was with Gen. Wolfe on the Plains of Abraham. Subsequently he became a member of Parliament, and became famous for coining the term "Sons of Liberty" when he sided with the colonists in the debate in the British Parliament over 'taxation without representation' prior to the start of the Am. Revolution. See:

http://www.famousamericans.net/isaacbarre/

Does anyone have any more information, especialy ancestral info on Isaac? I am curious because Richard Barre(Barry) from whom several of us are descended was also of Irish descent, was born around the same time as, and came to Canada around the same time as Isaac. I am trying to obtain information to determine if they were related. (Or, at least, to determine if Richard came to Canada as part of the military.)

Thanks/Merci to all,
Donna Barré

My mother was born in Marcelin in 1919 and around 1925 they moved to The Pas, Mb where ten years later they both had died. Lydia in 1934/35 and Dorima in 1935/36. It is Lydia, Dorima her parents Georges and Eugenie that I am searching for.. If anyone out there can help me I would surely appreciate it..Thank you...

According to the data I have, his father, Paul Barré, was born in Montreal, Canada in 1698. Paul's father was Jacque Barré who married in Montreal, Canada in the year 1688. Jacque's father was Jean Barré from Normandy, France.

I am always interested in learning more about my BARRÉ/BARRE ancestors, and their siblings.

Barrs and Barre Surnames

Does anyone have information on the following:

I have been told by genealogist in England that Barrs is the English translation for the French Barre and that the Barre first came to England from France in 1172 to fight the Irish and for one reason or another never got back to France. Apparently they migrated to England and Scotland. There is a bay between Irland and Lanchashire named Barrs Bay. I have traced Barrs to Warwick, Worstershire, London and to America in 1768.

I have located the town of Barre in France. I have found many Barre in France even today.

Does anyone have any history on this line back to 1000's forward?

Thanks,

Al Barrs
albarrs@wfeca.net
END<<
