Abigail Barrell, b. 1853 Morgan Co., OH, wife of Uri Hurd Brown, lived Pine Co., OH

I have an original postcard photograph of “Hurd Brown and wife – Stockdale [Pine Co.] Ohio – Aug 17, 1913”, which I’d like to get back to descendants or family members. Each of them looks to be around 60 years old.

Searching for Hurd Brown took me to “Find a Grave”, where his burial was in Zanesville (Muskingum Co.) OH, along with a wife (2nd wife) Harriet Delaplane Brown, who died in 1955. Ancestry Public Member Tree shows that Uri Hurd Brown died 27 Aug 1936 and wife Abigail Barrell died 14 Feb 1917 (so it was she who was the wife in 1913 when photo was taken). OneWorldTree shows that Uri Hurd Brown was born 27 Nov 1851 Deaverton, OH. 1900 census for Zanesville (Muskingum Co.) OH shows Uri, 48, birthdate Nov 1851, and Abigail, 46, birthdate Dec 1853 – and they were married in 1873.

Get back to me at margerice@prodigy.net if you are related to Hurd Brown or Abigail Barrell Brown.

Hi there

I think I might have solved your mystery. Do you have a copy of his birth cert? If his mother is Eliza Barrell, then I think he appears as Alexander JB Smith in some of the census records. I was thinking it was the same person, but without the birth cert can't be 100% sure.

His mother Eliza Barrell married William Smith (of Grundisburgh) - they are my great great grandparents via Alexander's sister/half sister Harriet Eliza.

I hope this is a help. I'd be really interested to hear any other info you have on the Barrell family.

Nicki

Hello....I have noticed your post and I believe you may have tried to contact me....I am in the Bootman Family and come from the Charles Marshall Bootman....we think his Birth last name was possibly Duffy? We are in the process of researching if his parents that died abt 1832 could have been part of the Ghosts of Duffys Cut Project.and..the adoption records in PA might have some answers if we could get them opened. The records show Bootman/Duffy or Mcduff but the Bootmans need the connection to the Duffy family by state law unless we can petition the courts. Rebecca

James Barrell

I am researching James Barrell dob abt 1805 in Vermont. He married a Caroline who was born abt 1829 in Delaware. I am researching him becase either he or most probably his wife was possibly related to Mary Elizabeth Herbert who married a Charles Marshall Bootman. In 1850 Mary and her brother were living with the Barrells in PA.In 1860 they had Wm & Ellen Herbert living with them in MI.In 1870 they had two Bootman children living with them. The relationship is not known. In 1850 and again in 1870 there was a Mary Mode or Moon living with them. This Mary was living with Mary Elizabeth Herbert & Charles M Bootman in 1860. Back to the Barrells- Caroline in 1900 was living in Lamoni IA and living with her was her "neice" Esther Bootman dau of Mary E and Charles Bootman. I am looking for a link, if there really is one between the Barrells, Bootmans and/or Herberts. I would appreciate any help one might have. Susie

I am descended from their daughter Abigail (b. 1830 in Sudbury). She married Levi Goddard Kendall, who moved west, ultimately settling in Wisconsin. After Abbie's death, Levi married her sister Louisa. I am particularly interested in any letters that Abbie or Louisa may have sent her mother or siblings back in Massachusetts.

Thanks,
Bruce

I would love more. I have mary's ancestry through the Benedict line (which is my relationship.) if there is more on her line through the Barrells and Hornbys it would be great. I have the names of her 2 children and some of her siblings. I have heard from the descendent of one of her siblings. Mary's maternal uncle, Howard Melville Benedict, was my g-g-grandfather. Are you kin?
I am also interested in finding out who, if anyone, has her papers. She was, I understand, a journalist and did some genealogical research, so I suspect that she kept quite a bit of stuff. We have copies of letters that she wrote to her cousins in Nashville before WWII that reference letters written by them to her. I thought that if those exist somewhere it would be interesting to put copies of them together.
Jim in Nashville

Barrells of Grosmont and Orcop / Garway, Herefordshire

I am looking for information on my Barrell ancestors who lived at Grosmont, Monmouthshire and Orcop and Garway, Herefordshire.

I believe that my g-g-g-g-grandfather, James Barrell (1788-1846), was born in Herefordshire in 1788. He married Ann and moved to Momouthshire where he lived at Grosmont Wood Farm, Grosmont. He and Ann had at least seven children - George Barrell (born 1820), Phillip (b.1823), William (b.1830), John (b.1832), Thomas (b.1836), Ann (b.1838) and my g-g-g-grandfather, James Barrell (1823-1896). Ann Barrell (snr) died in 1840 and James Barrell (snr) died in 1846, they are both buried at Grosmont.

My g-g-g-grandfather, James Barrell, moved to Orcop, Herefordshire, where he married Elizabeth Hill in January 1849. They later moved to nearby Garway Hill, where they kept a farm and a shop. Elizabeth died in 1894 and James died in 1896. They had nine sons - John Barrell (born 1850), Allen Barrell (b.1857), William Barrell (b.1859), James Barrell (b.1862), George Barrell (b.1867), Charles Barrell (1873-1896), Jack Barrell, Walter Barrell and my great-great-grandfather, Amos Barrell (1852-1933).

Amos Barrell married Alice Elizabeth Rooke in 1880 and lived on Garway Hill until the 1920s when he moved to Blaenavon, Monmouthshire and later to Gelligaer where he died in 1933. He is buried in Orcop Churchyard. He and Alice had at least eleven children.

If anyone can provide me with further information in regard to the Barrell family, I shall be most grateful.
