Not a descendant, but I am researching this line in relation to my husband's McPherson-Smith line. Hugh b 1865 married Elizabeth Smith b 1878 who was the sister of Marion Smith b 1876 who married Charles McPherson b 1877. Were you looking for info or just to make contact?

Would you recognize Hugh or his wife Elizabeth in a photo from 1948? I have a photo from the 50th anniversary party for Charles McPherson & Marion Smith and there are two people that my mother-in-law cannot identify anymore. She knows they're relatives, but not their names. I'd love to be able to ID them for her. If you can view the attached photo, it's the 2 people seated on the right side. Sadly, the woman has her face turned & as far as I know this is the only photo we have.

Thanks

Jack,
I would like to know what you have found.

I started this thread but has not been on this site for long time. So far, I have only discovered a possible connection--Alexander Barrie (JM's grandfather). He had a brother named John. It is possible that my greatgrandfather, John Barrie (married to Isabelle Meldrum, whose father was Jack Meldrum), may have been an Uncle to JM Barrie. This makes my grandfather, John Barrie, JM Barrie's 1st cousin. The time period fits. My grandfather was married to Nellie (born Thompson) Bond Fletcher.

I found the link to is Alexander Barrie's (JM's grandfather) family tree on this website:
http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&d...

Jeanne Barrie Cramer

Thank you that is very intersting. i ewill have to look for that book., No, ny gradnmother's name was not Cynthia. So far, I have found that JM Barrie had an Uncle John, which could be my great grandfather. soit is possible that my grandfather also John barrie may have been JM Barrie's cousin, but I have not confirmed that yet as I have not found a connection with JM Barrie's Uncle John Barrie yet (I don't know the names of his wife or children).

Jreanne Barrie Cramer

Hi Pat,

I've just re-read my email and I have put the wrong name in one spot.

It should read Gerald and Kathryn, not sure of the spelling for Kathryn, I only ever knew her as Aunty Kathy.

Gerald and Kathryn's youngest son was named Gavin, so yes there was another Gavin on the family tree, but two generations later.

Yes, it would be great to correspond. You can reach me on mrcbarrie@y7mail.com I've only ever been able to track back to Robert Campbell Barrie from Greenock, but no further on the Barrie line.

Hi Mark - how exciting to find another piece to the jigsaw puzzle! I have Robert on the family tree but with no further details.

According to the information I had been given Gavin (b 1890) died as a child in India - c1897 - was there another Gavin? I would love to correspond with you.

I am compiling the family tree from the original Robert bc 1767.

Regards

Pat

Hi Barbara,

Robert Campbell Barrie had another son, Gavin's elder brother, named after his father ie Robert. His son also named Robert married Anne Esther Bell in India and had 5 children (Barbara, Dudley, Gerald, Bell and Zena.....The last two were twins).

Dudley was my grandfather. He immigrated from India with his family, as did his brother and his family and his mother (Anne), to Australia during the 1950's. Bell and her family followed later, but Barbara and Zena migrated back to the UK.

Gavin and his wife Kathryn put down roots in Sydney, while my grandfather and his wife Rose made Brisbane their home.

Gerald and Kathryn had 4 children, Robert, Lloyd, Dawn and Gavin, there is a large contingent of Barrie's in Sydney.

My Grandfather Dudley Noel Campbell Barrie and my Granma, Rose, had 3 children, Margaret, Gordon and Roxanna.

Gordon is my father.

I'm Mark Robert Campbell Barrie. I also have three children now, not so coincidentally, one of them is named James.

I'd be interested in corresponding to fill in some of the blanks in the family tree.

Cheers,

Mark

Thanks Pat for such a prompt reply.
This is definitely the same family I am looking for. There is a question mark about the date of birth for Robert which varies from 1853 to 1857. If he put his correct age at the time of marriage, he was born in '53 but his death certificate puts his birth in '55. Of course both could be a couple of years out. Robert aged 16, is listed living with the family in the 1861 census. I haven't found any evidence of a David Barrie either. Robert Campbell Barrie had a son Gavin born in Ceylon who died aged 9. I wondered about Janet Campbell's parents as I have a question mark against them being a James Campbell and Elizabeth Ballantine. All their children carry the family names, but of course if his brother was the above Robert, the names would be similar.
Would love to make contact with other family in NZ and share info. John lives in the Blue Mountains in NSW and although he has a computer still writes by hand rather than using emails. You can contact me at blgurney@iinet.net.au
Regards
Barbara

Hi - I have not established any direction association with the Campbell's of Loudoun Castle but my ancestor, Robert, and his wife Jean lived at Hindberry Bank which was part of the Loudoun Estate. In the 1841 census Jean was a farmer and in 1851 her daughter Mary had taken over - farmer of 15 acres.

However, a grandson of Robert Barrie and his first wife, Margaret young, married a Campbell. John Barrie's (1800 - 1875) son John Barrie (1825 - 1927) married 1846 Janet Campbell do Robert Campbell and Margaret Gebbie. I have not explored any more about her parents.

They had a son Robert bc 1855 (I have not yet found his birth record). He was living with his parents in both the 1861 and 1871 census records at Holm St, Moffatt in Dumfries. I have no further records of him. I do not have a brother David for him though but he did have a brother Gavin, who went to New Zealand.

You may have already done a search on the 1861 census. I have just had a quick look - there are only 6 Robert Barrie's listed when a did a search for males aged 1 - 10. One is on my tree aged 6. There are two 7 year olds both living in the Dundee area. I then did a search on a David Barrie using same parameters and have come up with one at the same place. Curiosity got the better of me so I checked the actual record - parents are Robert Barrie and Jessie, all born Dundee. No Mention of 2nd names.I searched Dumfries for marriage or banns without luck. To find out Jessie's maiden name I look for a birth certificate of a younger child - Sandeman - so that is of no assistance.

Where in Australia does his descendant live? I am in South Australia.

Good luck with your search.

Regards

Pat

I'm related to this family. You can search my public tree. Just look for Ann Hepburn Barrie born in Perth, Perthshire, Scotland in 1843. I've worked pretty hard to fill out this tree using origins.net. So you may want to go there if you haven't tried it. They have free Scotish Origin searches. Let me know if you've gotten anywhere. It's very tricky because the family is so huge and everyone has the same names.

My GG Grandmother was Ann Barrie, daughter of John and Isabelle Barrie. John (born ~1802, Rattray, Perthshire) was the son of John (born ~1784) and Agnes Barrie. Perhaps Jean/Jane Barrie and John were brother and sister?

My GG Grandmother Ann Barrie supposedly said that we were related to JM Barrie. I did quite a bit of research to figure out how. I couldn't quite make the connection, but I think it is likely that JM Barrie was a First cousin once removed from Ann, which would make your Jean/Jane either the grandmother or great aunt of JM Barrie. I think my GG Grandmother viewed him as a nephew of-sorts in the large extended family of Barrie's in that area.

Let me know if you find out anything more or if you know anything more about John and Agnes Barrie because I've hit a dead-end there.

Isobel Barrie b. Coupar Angus

My gggg-grandparents Isobel Barrie and John Keay were married in 1809 in Forfarshire. Their children include: Margaret, James, John, Isabel, Andrew, Ann, and Andrew. My line is through James, who immigrated to Illinois,US, c1855.

Isabel appears on the 1841, 1851, 1861, and 1871 censuses living in Kinnell, Forfarshire, and is the Myre toll collector. (Her husband had served in the army before becoming a toll keeper, but does not appear with her on any of these censuses.) In 2 of the censuses, she lists Coupar Angus as her birthplace, and I found an Isabel Barry born to James Barry and Christian Small on November 12, 1786, in Coupar Angus. Is anyone related to this branch of the Barries?

I have been trying to find a connection with JM Barrie. I am thinking that maybe my grandfather, John Barrie, born in 1883, I think in Dundee. He came to upstate NY in about 1909. He may have been a cousin of JM Barrie's. How does JM Barrie have a grandson? I thought his marriage was childless and he never remarried? I couldnt find any recordss of his brothers haveing any descendants either, buth then maybe I didn't know exactly where to look.
I am in the U.S.
I would like to find out more. Thanks

Sophia Barrie

I'm trying to find out more about a Sophia Barry/Barrie who married a James Hughes. They had a son James Reginald Hughes who was born c. 1849 in "England" (as recorded on various Scottish census records). James Hughes junior moved to Edinburgh, but my understanding was that the family originally came from south Wales. On the death certificate of James Hughes junior his father's profession is recorded as "Captain Royal Navy". I have significant doubts about the truth of this though. I haven't had any luck tracking down Sophia and James at all...any help will be appreciated.

Thanks,
Andrew
