Surnames: Barriere, Champagne
My great-grandmother was Rose Marie Barriere, b. 1860 d. 1947 (Auburn, MA), who married Joseph Champagne (b. 1854 d. 1926, Auburn, MA). According to U.S. Census records, she came to the U.S. from French Canada in 1865 and was an "alien" (not naturalized citizen). In the early 1900's my grandfather went to LaColle, Quebec, Canada, with his cousin, to visit some relatives. My grandmother told her daughter (my aunt) that they were Indians. Both of my grandparents spoke French at home, and their children (my father, aunts and uncles) spoke French until they started school in Auburn, MA. I have just started researching Canadian census records etc. for the Barrieres (as well as Joseph Champagne), with particular interest in finding any documentation of Indian heritage / tribe. Anyone interested, contact me at thurber_etal@hotmail.com or harrisonswitch@gmail.com.
