I have just started to research my sister-in-laws family tree. Her ggggrandmother was a Mary Barrowman according to her son Joseph Waddells death cert. Mary was married to an Alexander Waddell, and then to a Cowan. She was still alive at the time of her sons death in 1867. I wonder if you have any detail of the Barrowman family that might fit with Mary?

No there is no connection to myserlf - my Borrowmans or Barrowmans the name chnged presumably due to pronunciation - came from Airth. Your Ancestors do appear on the Births 1700 -1800 list so if you'd like a copy please let me have your e-mail address - send to info@garrion.co.uk. On this list my ancestors are listed immediately above yours.

I'm not sure whether this site is still active. Anyway, a great-great-grandmother of mine was Alison Borrowman (b. 1798, died between 1834 and 1837). Her parents were James Borrowman (b. 1748 Lasswade, Midlothian; d. 1784 Humbie, East Lothian) and Elizabeth Vallence (b. 1768 Kilmarnock, Ayrshire).
Alison and her siblings (all of whom were born at Humbie) were not consistent in the spelling of their names. They were:
James Barrowman (1785-1861; died at Dreghorn, Ayrshire)
Agness Barrowman (b. 1787)
Marion Borrowman (1789 - 1850?)
Thomas Barrowman (b. 1791)
Elizabeth Barrowman (b. 1794)
Mary Barrowman (b. 1796)
Alison Borrowman (b. 1798)
Richard and John Barrowman (twins, b. 1800)

Alison married my great-great-grandfather, Adam Clark of Pathhead, Crichton Parish, Midlothian in 1829 and had 3 children -- Christian, George and Adam -- but died soon after the youngest was born.

I am searching for Jennet or Jessica Barrowman from Donegal, Ireland, born around 1880. She married William James Maxwell in Dec 1909 in Stranolar and then moved to Belfast, where she died in 1965. She is my great grandmother and I am interested in tracing her side of our family tree. I'm grateful for any replies.

Hi sorry I missed your post, My wife is related to Barrowmans through her GGrandmother Mary Barrowman, born 1858 Wisconsin, M. John H. Smith Sep. 15 1878. They had a daughter Hazel Margaret Smith B. 1893 Mahaska County, Ia. Died 1957 Fort Dodge Ia. M. Earl Shugart 1915. Mary Barrowmans parents were William Barrowman B. 1823 Scotland and Agnes Kinnon B. 1825 Scotland. William was James Brother I believe. Note from oral family history:
William Barrowman's mother died giving birth to him. He was raised by his uncle, Bill Barrowman and his wife Maude. William's dad kept the two older children, Eugene and Thomas.

The names William and Thomas I am very familiar with, but Eugene is a new one to me. I may be back a generation. My grandmother's brothers Bill and Tom Barrrowman were born in 1887 and 1892 in Braidwood Illinois. Bill's wife was named Mae and their son was named Robert. Tom Barrowman had a wife named Ada, then a wife named Ione. He lived in Ohio. Not as familiar with his descendents though. See if your friend can go a little further back. The Barrowman's are pretty much all related if you can go back far enough. It isn't too common a name. Lynn

I'm also interested in the Barrowman family from Chicago area (particularly Joliet). William Barrowman married Margaret E. Kelley who was born 6 Dec 1915 in Jefferson Co, IL. I believe William had brothers named Thomas and Eugene and probably others. Any info you can provide would be appreciated. My cousin married into this Barrowman family and I'm trying to research the family for her.

In 1866 a Daniel Barrowman, miner,who was my gr gr gr uncle married a Margaret Longmuir in Bridgeton, Glasgow Scotland. My line of Barrowmans came from Airth in Stirlingshire, moved to the Glasgow and Rutherglen areas and then scattered. Given your ancestor's middle name i am pretty sure you will have a connection with this barrowman/Longmuir family

Wonder if anyone can make a connection With William Barrowman Born Eastmuir, Shettleston Dist Near Glasgow June 4 1841 in Scotland Died March 25 1922 Lehigh , Webster county Iowa. and William Barrowman From Oskaloosa Iowa, William born Apr. 9 1823 Rutherglen, Scotland died August 18 1895 in Oskaloosa Iowa. My wife is related to the second William but we live by where the first William lived in Lehigh. Been to both graves. I have second Barrowmans Parents as John Barrowman born 1781 to 1858 and Jean Shields 1790 to 1867 Would appreciate any help also have obit from first William and be glad to get other info for anyone needing it.

As part of my research into my Borrowman/Barrowman ancestry I have grouped all births listed on the Scotlandspeople (GROS) site for the period 1700 to 1800 by mother's name, father's name and place of birth. There are also a few which go beyond that date (they are my relatives so if they are yours too....!). I am happy to make this information available to anyone either as a Word .doc file with the information grouped by birthplace and mothers name or for those with more sophisticated techniques as a .csv file for importing into spreadsheets or databases for more flexible examination. Just e-mail me and let me know which format you wish.

I had heard some where that when the MacGregors got kicked out of Scotland they changed their name to Barrowman to get back in.. or something like that.. I bet we are too! I'll pull my stuff out and look it over again, but I think my Alex Barrowman was from Dreghorn Ayr Scotland, as well. We have had at least three Alex Barrowmans in our family. My grandfather is Alex Barrowman (he is still living) and his father and grandfather are also Alex Barrowman. I know my great-grandfather, lived in the Chicago area and worked for the railroads. He died in 1973, the year I was born so I never got to meet him. Where do you live? We live in Champaign, IL

He was born in Dreghorn Ayr Scotland and married Mary Jane Jack of Bruce Mines Canada. My grandmother was their youngest. Marion Hanney) and the B's in Australia ?

John married Barbara Brown (or Black ?) and
had 3 sons and 6 daughters. First son John
was born in 1817, married Christian Boyd
in 1838 and had 4 sons. 1st son John (b 1841
married Margt. Brown Baillie). 2nd son
Thomas (b 1843 married Margt. Rankine). 3rd
son Joseph was born around 1850, married
Isabella Bennett. John, Thomas and Joseph
all had sons. 4th son Robert was also born
around 1850, married Jane Reid but I have no
record of their children.

2nd son of John + Barbara Brown, Robert, was
born around 1823, married Anna Thompson in
1842 and had 3 sons and 4 daughters.

Third son of John + Barbara Brown, William,
was born around 1837, married Agnes Findlay
and had 2 daughters but no sons.

Mary's father Daniel married Jane Weir at Old
Cumnock, Ayrshire in 1841. Daniel was the first born
to George (born 1821)and his first wife Mary
Johnston. They had 6 sons and 2 daughters.

George later married Janet McCall Eadie and
had 2 sons and 1 daughter. George had 2
brothers, James and John. I think the South
African line may come from John.

John married Ann Johnston (Mary Johnston's
sister ?) in 1842. One of their sons, John,
married Chalmers Cleland at Kilsyth in 1871
and had 3 sons and 1 daughter. One of these
sons, Robert, was born at Kilsyth in 1873.
Possibly he may be the father of John
Barrowman in Port Elizabeth ?

The parents of George, James and John were
Daniel B. and Janet Pollock but I have no
details of their ancestry.

PS If you were to hear the names Borrowman
and Barrowman spoken in a central Scottish
accent, you would understand how the 2
spellings became interchangeable !
This is also borne out in the parish records.

I don't know if this information is any help but my husband's ggg?. grandfather was John Barrowman who married Janet King in1821. Their daughter, Helen (I don't know of any other children as I haven't been able to find out much re the Barrowmans,) married William Hutchison in 1858 and their son David married Elizabeth Hunter in 1882. John Barrowman Hutchison married Mary Welsh Dickson in 1909 and their son John Barrowman Hutchison married Jemima Hunter Patrick in 1945. My husband is their second son but our fourth son is also named John Barrowman Hutchison - so the Barrowman name still continues.
I believe the American swimmer. Mark Barrowman (who still holds the world backstroke 100m? record ) may be a relative.
