I always thought the name BARRUS was Welsh. This part of NYS has a large number of northern Welsh, who settled in Oneida, Otsego, Herkimer, and Madison counties.
Here is some of the other information I have on BARRUS.
The 1850 census showed an Alvin BARRUS(also written Alvan) (b. 1808), with a wife, Nancy, and two daughters, Theresa and Celestia, and one son, Menzo D., in the Town of Richfield. Alvin was the innkeeper at the National Hotel (later called the Hotel Majestic), located in the village of Richfield Springs. This was one of the grand hotels that was formerly part of Richfield Springs' glory due to the sulphur springs. The hotel was located east of the present day school on Main Street on the north side of Main Street where the Patterson garage is now located. Lake Clements, behind the hotel (where the present day school sports fields are located), had a BARRUS Landing noted on the Richfield map.
In 1860, Alvin BARRUS is shown as a farmer in Richfield Springs, with wife, Nancy, and two sons, Menzo and George (it looks like the daughters had left home by then).
I have gone through the back issues of the Richfield Springs Mercury, the village newspaper. Alvin BARRUS, according to advertisements for the National Hotel, was still its proprietor, as well as running a farm. He shows up in the ads through 1870, as well as in the 1870 Federal Census for Otsego County as living in the hotel. Also listed with him are Mary BARRUS, age 23 (white, female) and Ralph BARRUS, age 1 (white, male), both born in NYS. According to Menzo’s great-granddaughter, Melodie Lane, Mary was Menzo’s wife (Alvin’s daughter-in-law) and Ralph, his grandson. Menzo shows up in later editions of the Mercury as a deputy sheriff.
Alvin BARRUS was also Town Supervisor of the Town of Richfield,1856-57 and in 1864.
Alvin BARRUS was also noted to be a member of the Universalist Church (which held its services in the Herkimer stone church [Union Church] in Schuyler Lake [1838]…the different denominations shared the church, with the Universalists using it the first Sunday of each month. Alvin BARRUS was an officer of the Union Church, one representing the Universalists. (www.usgennet.org/usa/ny/county/otsego/book/exeter/churches.h...)
There is a Timothy BARRIS in the 1800 Federal census for the Town of Otsego, Otsego County. His listing has one white male under age 10, one white male age 16 to 26, one white male age 26 to 45, as well as one white female age 16 to 26. I suspect this is Alvin's father.
Other BARRUS people in the census records include: Joseph BARRUS (b. 1806 in NYS), a hermit in Fly Creek/Schuyler Lake in the 1860 census; and David BARRUS, b. 1796 in NYS, a laborer in Town of Exeter (1850 census) and in Oakville (1860 census).
In the Richfield Springs Mercury, Thursday, April 16, 1925, in the "Town Topics" section, the following mention is made:
"Ralph BARRUS came down from Rochester for a brief visit with his many friends in this village."
In the Richfield Springs Mercury, the following ran from December 1925 to November 1926:
"THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF NY - By the Grace of God Free and Independent

As executor of the Last Will and Testament of said deceased should not render a final account of his proceedings as such executor and why the same should not be judicially settled in said Surrogate’s Court.

Hope this helps some.
