Hi Marie,
It's nice to meet you! I am going home for Easter and I will show your post to my Grandpa so he can help me figure it out. I know the names of his parents and sister, but he will be able to tell me about Jens and Lars.

Talk to you soon!

Sarah

I believe I am a relative of yours. My grandmother grew up in the Kenyon-Wanamingo area and her name is Jeanette Barsness Olson. Her brothers are Lars and Jens Barsness. Sisters Martha, Ella, and Nora Barsness. (All of these people would be 100+ years old if still living).

I accessed my county library web site from home and using my library card number viewed the censuses at Heritage Quest online. Ancestry.com has more censuses online than does Heritage Quest.

Dawson is in Lac Qui Parle county, MN.

In the 1900 census for Hantho township, Lac Qui Parle county, MN

John P. Walstad, 51, farmer; wife Gunhilde, 49, (born abt 1851) plus children are named with their ages and birthplace
shows 1865 as Gunhilde's year of immigration
shows 1869 as John's year of immigration

1910 census for Hantho township
John P. Walstad, 61, born Norway; wife Gunhild, 59, BORN NORWAY; married 37 years (married abt 1873), 11 children born, 6 living. Olina, Ella and John listed
Maybe you'll find someone who is researching them/their children and learn more. Good luck to you and remember to use the censuses. They are immensely helpful.

My husband comes from the Alexandria area. We have info about the Urness side, but I am trying to find out about Bothilda Thue, who married Ole Urness. Ole is my husbands Great Grandfather. When Ole died, she married Erich Thorsen. Is she related some how to You? The only info I can find about Thue in Alec is Lars H. Thue and Martha Thue and their 8 children, but Bothilda is not one of them.Bothilda was born in 1859. Thanks, Kathy Urness

Gunhilda Ugland Mikkel Barsness

Curt,
We definetly come from the same family. My great-grandmother, Maria, was the oldest child of Gunhilda and Mikkel. Your great(?) grandfather, John, married Louise Temp and they had two children: Raymond C. and Ardell S. right?

We just had the Barsness/Bjoraker Family Reunion last weekend in the Kenyon/Wanamingo, Minnesota area. The group has become rather small but the Bjorakers and Voxlands are represented mostly. Right down the road from the park that we picnic at is the Holden Lutheran Church which is where Gunhilda and Mikkel are buried. Last year the families took a tour of the old family farms - some of which are still in family. What a neat experience that was.

In another one of your posts you mention a book that your mother has. I'm wondering if I don't have that same one titled "Vikehim Viking Saga: Sogndal Norway to Goodhue County Minnesota." It's pretty much my bible when it comes to genealogy.

Love to hear from you to see what other family history you may have that I don't have.

Kay (Bjoraker) Wiegert
kay.wiegert@roch.edu

Thank you, Linda, for filling in a number of pieces in our puzzle.

Do you know where in the Town of Vermont Ole Andersson Barsness farmed? Do you know in what church he and Johanna were married?

I'm in Madison, Dane County, and should be able to get more information from church records, the Wisconsin Historical Society, and the Naeseth Center.

About Johannes Olson and Karen Sandstad: According to the Family Search Ancestral File (Mormon web site) KSS3-MD, they were the parents of Johanna Johannesdotter Urness, and Ole Nielsen was Johannes Olson's father. I also found Ole Nielsen listed (#4641) in Burials in Hafslo 1755-1920 at http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/.

Your Johanna Urness is the same as our Johanna Johannesdotter from Kreken, a part of Urnes and was known as Johanna Olson. She emigrated to America in 1862.

She had a child from a previous marriage. His name was Johannes or John Urness, son of Johanna and Johannes Christenson. He emigrated to America with his mother.

OIe Andersson was born Mar. 28, 1822 married a widow Ingeborg Bertine, known as Bertina Knutsdotter. They settled in Barsnes in Sogndal and then emigrated to America in 1855. Under the names of Ole and Bertina Barsness, they settled as farmers in Vermont Township, WI.
Bertina died about 1862 (not verified yet).

Ole was married again to Johanna Johannesdotter on April 8, 1863 in Dane County. After a few years of farming in Vermont Township, they moved to Naples Township (boundry lines were changed and this became Mondovi Township).

I am confused on who your Johannes Olson is and Karen Sandstad, Ole Nielsen. Please clarify this info. a little better for me.

Thank you

The Barsness family you mentioned matches mine completely. Inger Bertine was known as Bertha Barsness and she married Samuel Swiggum. My husband is a direct descendent of the Swiggum family. I am trying to locate more info on the Barsness family.

We are probably getting close to making some sense of all this.

Our people moved from Wisconsin to Goodhue County Minnesota still listing themselves as Oleson. My Great Grandfather Jens, who was born in Norway came to the United States with his mother Marta and his siblings. He married Maria Larsdatter Thue in Wisconsin and had some children in Goodhue County and then moved to Urness Township up around Alexandria for a time before moving north further toward Walker and Bemidji, Minnesota.

My neice Cheri at longcj@hotmail.com is the family expert. Give her a try for more information. She is in communication with Norway sometimes and has info on origins.

Could the Maria Barsness whose grave you found be the same person as the Anna or Anne Maria Barsness that was a sister of my grandmother? Anna Maria was born Oct. 30, 1877, in the Town of Naples, near Mondovi, Buffalo County, Wisconsin.

She was one of 10 children of Ole A. Barsness (6 Mar 1820-1898) and Johanna Urness (24 Oct 1835-1914 according to my father's notes; Family Search Ancestral File lists them as December 10, 1834 - June 1914.). Ole and Johanna both were born in Urnes on the Lyster Fjord, Norway, and immigrated to this country.

The children were John, born 9 Aug 1863; Louisa, 30 Sep 1865; Moncena (Monsine), 17 Mar 1867; Christina (Kristine), 14 Apr 1868; Julia, my grandmother, 30 Jun 1869; Inger Bertina (Bertine), 25 Jun 1871; Ole Andreas, 10 Aug 1874; Samuel, 7 Mar 1876; Anna Maria; and Martin, 2 Dec 1879. I don't have any of their death dates; Julia died in about 1957. I also don't know about any of their marriages except Julia, who married Halvor Kittel Barstow. They lived in Mondovi.

I'd love to hear from anyone who knows more about the family.

The farm is near Sogndal in Norway. This is similar to Sogn in Goodhue, Co., Minnesota. Nerstand, Minnesota is similar to Berstrand, Norway where I think Maria Thue's family originated. Jens Barsness and his wife Maria had two daughters and many sons. Their son Melvin, my Grandfather and Cheri Long's Great Grandfather was born in Goodhue co. He later moved with his parents to a lake area west of Alexandria, Mn. and then on to Hubbard Co. on a farm Southeast of Bemidji, Mn.

Barsness in Dane Co. WI

Dane County is SW of Door County. It lies in the South Central part of the state. I don't know if there is a connection between My Barsness's and yours. However, it seems funny that some of My Barsness's ended up in Minnesota as your did. I have'nt had the opportunity to check Jens Barsness or Anna Thue in my mothers book. There is names going back to the 1600's. I had them all on my computer but lost them. I need to put them back in. My Barsness's (John Hermundson Barsness) arrived in America in the 1850's. Do you know when yours arrived? Also since Norwiegians often took their name from the Farm they originated from. Their is such a farm in Norway in the Sogn area. Can get more details if you like. Also I believe the book in my family has some photos. Will try to help if I can.

I have beautiful pictures of the Urness church in Norway and of Urnes Norway itself...very old pictures. Many family pictures as well.
On your side it stops with Julia Barsness B. June 30, 1869. There is no record of her marrying and there is a note in the book that states that all inquiries to that side of the family came back with a note from a Joe Todd in Wisc. saying that all of the members of the family were too old to be interested in corresponding. I dont know how to access your gencom file yet and I dont have any of this information online yet...I just got the information yesterday. But if there are any specific things I can look up for the time being please let me know and I will do that right away. I am hoping to start working on this today. Im so happy to have found you.
Kathy Murray Butterfield
