I am researching my grandfather, Jens Julius Froyland who migrated to Australia at the age of 18 in 1872. His father was Jens Jorgen Froyland who was born in Norway, Bergen in about 1835. Do you think that there could be any links with your Froyland?
Elaine

Barstad's from Norway to Canada

I'm doing a family tree and I've hit a wall. I've noticed some surnames change depending on location and father's first name in Norway.

ei: Sven Johan = father of Ivan Svensen = father of Ludvig Ivansen = father of Helen Ludvigdatter

Their lastnames sometimes take the fathers first name plus "sen" (son) or "datter" (daughter). They even add the town they come from sometimes.

ei. Sven Ivansen Bergen, Sven Ivansen Barstad

This is my problem. I have traced my ancestor Tollef Barstad (41), wife Bertha Barstad (39, who's maiden name may have been Young), sons Eyvind (12), Olaf B. (9), Terje (3) and daughter Borghild (7) to arriving in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada on April 30, 1927.

When I try to search to find them in Norway, I come up empty. I don't know if they changed their lastname when they came to Canada to reflect their town or what. I'm at a loss. My family tree has been put on hold until I can get more info.

Anything anyone can offer to help me, would be appreciated.

Thankyou

Jim: Your gr-uncle Wilfred and I gave your grandmother a copy of the Barstad family tree back several years before she died. It goes back to around the 1550s in Norway for both sides of their family. If you will get in touch with me, I will try to make a copy for you. Not sure if you will remember me, but we lived in Woodburn, OR and often visited your grandmother.

Barstad's from Norway

The Barstad branch of my family came from
Urdal, Sokndal, Norway. Amund Jensen (1783 -
1848) was my 3xg grandfather. His son was
Jens Amundsen Barstad (1817 - ?). And his son
was John Severin Barstad (1858 - 1938). John
married Martha Johnson (1864 - 1945). Martha
was the daughter of Amon Johnson (1858 - 1938) who also was
born in Urdal, Norway. Amon was a famous Lutheran
pastor who founded an number of Norwegian Lutheran
churchs in Wis. and Iowa. Does this help?

Barstad family tree

I am looking for any relatives of my grandfather, Arnie Barstad of the northern California area. He probably died in the 1950's, was married and had 3 children. Their names were Nona (deceased), James (living) and Martin Roger (deceased) who is my father. I think my grandfather was born in Norway and may have had several brothers.

Do you have a birth date for Olaus Barstad. My great grandfater John Barstad had a brother Ole Jenssen Urdahl Barstad who was born in Norway, November 27, 1850. Following are my notes on John Barstad:

"John was born in Huage, Sogendahl Parish, Dalene, Stavanger Provence, Norway the sixth son on September 16, 1858. This is the same small area of Norway from which his future wife's, Martha Johnson, father was from and they were first cousins once removed. He was baptized in the Lutheran Church in Sokndal Kirke, built in 1803 and where his father-in-law, Amon Johnson was baptized. He came to America at the age of 21, he was married on May 21, 1883 in Aurelia, Cherokee County, Iowa to Martha Johnson, and became a naturalized American citizen on September 16, 1886 in Sioux City, Woodbury County, Iowa. John had a store when he first started in business, worked a year as a clerk in a haberdashery and then set up in business for himself. When he took his family out west in 1902, he dealt in real estate, first in local city real estate, then in timber lands in Canada (around Vancouver, BC) which timber lands he sold to Eastern interests. John was engaged in this work most of the time when in the Pacific Northwest, until World War I made it difficult to get into Canada. He built a house at 2704 Manito Boulevard, Spokane, WA on a lovely corner lot. The house still stands today, in 2001. Here his children grew up and attended school. After his daughters married, John and Martha left Spokane, WA and moved to Moscow, Idaho near their married daughter Josephine Barstad Nordby and later, spent their declining years in Missoula, Montana. He was a good husband and father and encouraged his girls to pursue education. All four of his girls went to college. He died April 14, 1938 in Missoula, Montana."

We believe our Barstad relatives came from the same area of Norway. The first one we know of in this country was Olaus Barstad. He was a farmer in southwestern Minnesota. We are just starting to look for his relatives in Norway. We believe he also had a sister here named Sena Barstad who we think was never married. Other names associated with our family from the same area of Norway are Remmen, Lee, Fronsdahl, Lande. We have substantial information on our Barstad relatives in this country but very little from Norway. If anything I've mentioned rings a bell please reply to keltract@rconnect.com
