Re: I am trying to find my family "The Barstow Family"

I too am searching for Chuck Barstow who was the eldest of four boys. The father passed away when all the boys were quite small and their mother died as well when Chuck was about 15 yrs. old. They resided in the area of Port Huron, Michigan. My family made attempts to adopt these boys, however a woman placed a claim on them using them to work her camp grounds area. Chuck worked for Wonder Bread delivery when he was in his late 20s. Does this sound like the same man you are searcing for? Besides Chuck, two twin boys Geri & Teri (the 4th I cannot recall his name)

Hello David
My great grandfather was Barstow Rhodes, b. 1847, Hunslet, Leeds
His mother was Charlotte Barstow, b. 1802, Leeds or Wortley, Leeds.
According to the LDS IGI, Charlotte's father was Samuel Barstow who married an Elisabeth Wauls b. Dec. 6, 1770, Leeds.
It appears that Samuel's father may have been John Barstow, b. abt. 1750..but I can't be sure.
I am wondering if you or anyone knows anything about the siblings or ancestry of Charlotte Barstow. (I think she may have had a brother John b. 1800 and a sister Elizabeth b. 1804, Leeds.
Thanks, in advance. Carole

Hello Nancy,
Thank you for replying to my inquiry back in Apr 2007. At that time I had just started to research my ancestors and Florence BARSTOW was on my father's birth certificate. Since then I've found that her name was BAIRSTOW no BARSTOW. Also, found that her mother was Ann CLAVEN or CLAVIN and she was born of Irish parent's in Wales. Florence's father was ROBERT BAIRSTOW born 2 Dec 1839 in Wilsden, Yorkshire to WILLIAM BAIRSTOW and SARAH MERCER. So it doesn't seem that there is a connection between our families, at least from what we've found. Who knows what happened 200 years prior to that! Thank you for your response. Best regards, Dot

My Barstow records to back to my great grandfather, Rev John Smithson Barstow, born in Bramhope, Yorkshire in 1846 and died in Aslackby, Lincolnshire in 1915. His 2nd child, my grandmother, Maud Mary Barstow was born in Aslackby in 1884 and died in Kelowna, BC Canada 1985.

My grandmother talked bout the family home being Garrow Hall in York. My research found a quote from a book called - Walks through the City of York, publisher Chapman & Hall Limited 1880, by Robert Davies. Page 100 - "The gallows of the Abbott of St Mary.....not far from Lamel Hill, probably upon Garrow Hill (a corruption of Gallows Hill) where Mr Barstow's house is built"

I also found a publication with the Yorkshire Archaeological Society called - Garrow Hill, memoirs, with pedigree and dialect notes (MS1756) by Elizabeth Barstow. I am trying to order a copy from them.

There is a mention of Miss FLORA Barstow, Garrow Hall, York in a website called "The Ilam Anastasic Drawing Society, dated 1864.

In the Register of Marriages:

July 31, 1734 - John Atkinson married Mary Barstow, Holy Trinity, Goodramgate, York.
Mary-daughter of Michael Barstow, gent., brother of Benjamin Barstow, sheriff 1729-30 from whom the Barstows of Garrow Hill are descended. May, his 2nd wife (widow of Nathan Barstow)(ancestor of the Barstows of Garrow Hill) and daughter of Robert Foster, sheriff of York in 1691-2. She was buried at All Saints, Feb 4, 1741-2.

Aug 21, 1716 - James Barstow & Marie Barstow
James Barstow, mercer or grocer (son of Thomas Barstow of York & Sarah Poole. Apprenticed to Thomas Barstow, mercer, March 4, 1686-7 - admitted to the Merchants Company in 1695, Sheriff of York in 1716-17; buried at All Saints North Stree, March 1714-5. His first wife, Mary died in childbed, as was buried in St Martins, Coney St, November 19. 1706.

July 5, 1881, The London Gazette "John Arthur Barstow Esq, Garrow Hill, York"
I don't know what that is referring to.

1848 - Subscribers to "Isle of Man" (magazine?)
Barstow, G. Esq - Garrow Hill, York.

My sister and I are going to York this year and would like to hear your ancestry information. Are we related?
Please email me

Nancy Miller bnmill@telus.net
I have not been on this site for a while, and I just now (May29th, 09) got this message.
The Fred Barstow I have an interest in lived in Washington, D.C. in 1942, and I am pretty sure he worked for the government. He had 1 or 2 sisters that lived on Foxhaul Road in Northwest Washington D.C. near McArthur Blvd.
If any of this connects to any of your research, a response would be deeply appreciated.
Seeking Anne Barstow, b. Approx 1774, Leyden, MA

Anne Barstow m. Hugh Stewart in 1795 in Leyden. She's marked on the record as being "of Leyden". I've looked, and there appear to be a lot fo Barstows in that area at that time. Hezekiah has at least 4 sons who could potentially be Anne's father, and an Anne Barstow died in 1773 in Leyden, so it's a good guess that she was named for an aunt who passed.

Thank you for any information.

I'm looking for information on my grandfather, Fred Barstow (married to Janna Hagen). This is my paternal grandfather, my father's name is Michael J Barstow. I know my grandparent's lived in Wisconsin until at least 1956, then they moved to Arizona due to my uncle having a medical problem. At some point, Fred's family's last name was not Barstow, it was something else, but I'm not sure when the change was made, it could've been by him, his father, or grandfather. Any information would be appreciated.

Hello,

Does anyone know the names of Mary's children with Alpheus Wickware/Wickwire? They were married Oct. 21, 1746.

It would appear that Alpheus died in late 1758 or 1759 as she is named as the administratrix of his estate in CT records, looking for some help with selling real estate to pay off the artisan who made the memorial for Alpheus in Norwich.

Thanks for any help,
Jan Hart

I know that my fathers name is Stanley Rex Barstow, I had an Uncle by the name of Chuck Barstow, and a grandparents by the name of Jack and Diane Barstow. I have heard that I have an enormous family and I don't know any of them. I am 28 years old, I have been a widow for 4 years, I have two children and I would really love for my children to know their family. I have been told that most of my family lives in Texas but I am not sure which part. My Uncle Chuck Barstow was the only family member that I ever knew, I havn't seen him in over 10 years and I would really like toknow if he is still alive. Thank you so much.

Re: Barstow Ohio cousins

I am helping a friend with Davies and Barstows in Ohio. He had David Davies born June 1876 in Gallia County, Ohio who married Carrie Barstow. Her sister Adda married David's brother, John D. Davies. I believe the parents of Carrie and Adda were Levi Barstow and Sarah Lane.
Separate from that, I have a death certificate that does not belong to our line of Barstows if you are interested.
Carrie Barstow, born September 6, 1888, in Pittsburgh, PA, died Dec 30, 1917, in Lake County, Ohio. I cannot read the name of her father, looks like Andrew Ziwe_____ born Germany, Mother Emma Lewis, born Colorado. Informant was George Barstow of Willoughby, Lake County, Ohio. If this Carrie Barstow belongs to your line, I will be glad to send it to you, no charge.
