Your Edward could have been the eldest child born after their marriage in 1800. John Barter was a Journeyman/ropemaker so his son could have had maritime connections.

Have just found handwritten family tree of some of the Barter family. J.Howard (born/1876d.1956) had 7 brothers & sisters including my grandmother. They were the children of George Saunders Barter and Zoe Constance Whitfield who married in1870. George b1840 was son of Eliza Barter b1821, husband unknown (family rumour has it she never had one). Eliza was daughter of John Barter & Mary Coleman who married in Portsmouth in 1800. There is no mention of an Edward at this point but a note says that John & Mary had more children than shown on this tree. Don't know if this is of any help to you, can give you full details if you would like them.

I have a mass of family papers to sort through, if I find any details of J.H. Barter's family, I'll let you know - I may have my grandmother's birth certificate somewhere and that could show her parents (and therefore J.H.'s). She and several members of her family lived in Cowes before the war.
Fingers crossed,
Jill Simpson

Some Barters With Maine Connections

I have no connection to any of these families. I am just posting info. I have come across while volunteering at the historical society. This is by no means a complete list, only the ones I was able to obtain. I have discovered the hard way that within a certain span of time, if you don’t have the date and place of death, it’s hard to track someone down.

Some of the names that appear to be maiden names may very well be married names and the other name given be the maiden name – at least it tells you a date and place of death – a good starting point. This is all the info. I have on these people although I do have a number of vital record books for the Knox County (Maine) area and would be willing to do a quick lookup or two. I am typing in literally hundreds of these entries so please be as specific as possible if you need a lookup.

Amos Barter died May 30, 1887 at Rockland, Maine at the age of 67 years, 6 mo., 12 days.
I believe that this was Allan L. Barter, son of Amos & Betsy Kempton Barter. Thanks for the new info; will follow up on deeds for that purchase.

I just found another "blurb." This is from the March 12, 1901 issue of the Rockland (Maine) Courier-Gaette in the "Talk of the Town" column:

"Allen T. Barter, who has just bought a quarry on Thurlow's Island, Stonington, was in the city yesterday endeavoring to charter vessels to carry cellar rock to Boston."

Here's what I've come up with for Florence (Stover) Barter. She was born June 16, 1885 in Rockport, Maine, d/o Ross and Flora (Stinson) Stover. She died April 10, 1955 at Owl's Head, Maine. She is buried at the Achorn Cemetery in Rockland. Oh, her husband's name was Pearl Barter.

For Frances, she died June 9, 1936 in Salem, N.H. at the age of 40 years, 1 mo, 23 days. She was born in Stonington, Maine to William and Anna (Rumney?) Barter. Her last place of residence was Salem, Mass. Her husband's name was Harvey Cohn.

Hope this helps!
Cindy

Barter Families in St. George, Maine - 1895 Town Census (#3)

I have no connection to this family but wanted to share this information as this would be impossible to come by and I know personally how helpful this can be. It is from the book "Vital Records of St. George, Maine". Included in there is an 1895 Town Census. In most cases they give ACTUAL birth dates AND also in most cases, they give the wife’s maiden name. Apparently they’re not all in alphabetical order, so I may be adding to this, so here goes:

p. 511

Barter
Lewis C., b. June 11, 1870
Ernestine (Kirkpatrick), b. Jan 18, 1875
Gladys Belle, b. June 9, 1894

Barter
Emmeline (Gilchrest), b. Oct 16, 1840
Edgar, b.
Hi there, sorry for late reply; been away. My father in law's brother was Jack Andrews and he married Lorna Smith, daughter of Walter Rupert Smith and Clarice Wiggins. I had been trying to piece together some information for her in relation to her ancestors. I would be grateful for any information you have that I can pass on to her.

Kind regards
Josie Andrews

Thanks for your most generous offer! I have almost all of the names you listed in my family but lots of missing vital records. The only two people that I'm not sure about are Florece L. Stover and Frances C. Cohn, Barter wives I suppose but not sure which are their spouses.
Other names that are connected with Barters for the same time period (and some before) are:
Annis, Babbidge, Bickmore, Collins, Coombs, Carleton, Foster, Gardner, Rich, Robbins, and Wilson.
These families were intertwined with the St. George and Deer Isle/Isle au Haut Barters.
Appreciate any info you might have.
Hi Janet: I will certainly keep my eyes open. Is that the only name you are looking for in this area? I have a LOT of other stuff about a lot of different names that I have already typed up from the computer. So let me know any names you are looking for and I'll see what I can find for you. Take care, Cindy (I bet it's not snowing THERE - lol) We just had our first snow of the season tonight and I don't even have my tulip bulbs planted yet. lol

Hi Cindy,
My name is Janet and I live in Tobago as in Trinidad and Tobago, a small island near South America.
Isn't the internet amazing? I didn't expect to hear from you as if we were doing a live chat! Anyway, I certainly couldn't get into the historical society until maybe next year so I certainly appreciate the post. I have been doing family (Barter) research since 2001, mostly from whatever I can find online. It's great work that you do; if I lived there I'd be doing the same. I'd appreciate anything else Barter related that you might come across. Thanks again.

No it isn't. I volunteer a lot at the Rockland Historical Society and they have all of the old newspapers in their possession. As I have gone through the old papers to make copies of important articles (because the papers themselves are getting so brittle), I try to get typed in any obits or anything that I find. I figure I would like someone to do this for me if I couldn't get to a place where some of my ancestors were. Where are you located? Cindy (megsateennow@aol.com)
