Seeking any connections to the Bartel/Barthel families from eastrn Ohio, western PA. Here are a few of my notes:
Antoine Barthel left FRANCE in the early 1830s and traveled to America where he took up residence in the Township of Canton, County of Stark, Ohio. He may have met Mary Madeleine Rantz in Ohio; in the 1830 census there were a number of Rantz families in Wayne, the adjacent country to the west of Stark. Possibly, Antoine even met Mary Madeleine on the ship en route to the U.S. Mary Madeliene's passport suggests that she came to America in the early 1830s as well.
Barthel was not married when he left home because we have a copy of a letter written by his father, Antoine, to the son asking for the name of his wife and children. Also, extant letters from Antoine's father (also Antoine), dated 1837 and 1846 were addressed to his son Antoine Barthel in Stark County, city of Canton, state of Ohio.
The 1840 U.S. census of Stark County, Canton Township, Ohio appears to list the Bartel family as the name Randle. The 1840 census index is probably in error. From the handwriting, on the census documents, it is very likely that the indexer for the census misread an "R" where it should have been a "B" - same mistake was likely made for the "n" and small "r" - changing the real listed name to Bardle. the sexes of the individuals as well as the dates of the younger children match with Antoine Barthel's family. A page-by-page browse of the 1840 census did not yield any other names that could be mistaken for Barthel and all indications placed these Barthels in Ohio at the time.
A certificate from the Canton, Ohio Court of Common Pleas dated April 6, 1840 confirms that Anthony Bartel, a subject of the King of France, appeared before the Court on Monday, September 17, 1838 to request naturalization as a citizen of the United States, having previously appeared April 15, 1835 to apply for naturalization.. As of September 1838, Andrew Sothammer testified that Bartel has lived in the Unites States for at least five years, and at least one full year in Canton, Ohio
In 1850, Antoine Barthel was farming in Green Township, Erie, PA. His family is listed as "Bordell" and his name was written as Anthony. Five of the 6 living children are listed as being born in Ohio. The fifth child, Magdalena, was born about 1845 in Ohio; the sixth child listed, Antoinette, was born about 1848 in PA. Thus it is likely that the family moved east to the Green Township area between 1846 and 1848.
In 1860, Anthony, Mary and 7 children farm a property in green Twp.
Anton Bartel's cemetery record says he was 70 years old at death in 1880. This would make his birth 1810, which is off by 7 years from his birth certificate. Age may be wrong on cemetery record, he may have been 77 when he died.
