Greetings, I have reviewed this group of Barto postings and have seen reference made to the Barto line being traced back to the 1600's. Would it be possible for me to acquire that line? I have it traced back to Elijah Barto who was married to Annar Smalley. I am connected through Elijah and Annar's son Freeman Barto.

I have also heard that there is a Native American link but have never heard any specifics. I would also be interested in any information on that subject. Thanks, Bill

A lady e-mailed me at verusl@centurytel.net with the following information and I replied as best I could that her gg grandmother bears the same name as my own, except that my grandmother married Norman Barto LANGHAM and thence became known as Jennie N. Langham....I have crossed this trail before and thought you might like to have a go at it..maybe she is a relative of yours; she wrote: My Great Grandmother also was Nancy Jane Barto----Married to Alfred K Miller----She died at the age of 103 in Viroqua, Wisconsin and is buried near Richland Center , Wis. I know it for a fact as I buried her. I always just knew her as Jane Miller----My grandmother Ella Miller-----my father Alfred Fosdal and myself Jeannette Fosdal--------Thank you-----Jeannette---Ohhhhhh I have always been told that she was native american but now that I am looking up our family tree-------I cannot find anything about that. Her e-mail address is poopsi@frontiernet.net. Regards..er, ah, is this by any chance Jan Schuenenman found elsewhere in this thread?

If you contact me on ancestry.com, my daughter will talk with you and possibly let you see our tree on Indian Roots. Yes, we have Native American Blood. That is why you need to talk with her. I gave her control over who sees our tree, this way no one can find me, only her. We are very serious about this. I have people trying to find me to train me in their ways, which are not of God. That is why you only see me on the tree, which we guard very carefully, my children don't want to lose me to them. Search Lottie Barto, Lottie Charlotte Barto Kilmer.. They mixed up alittle on her name. You are the smart one. Find her and you will find me. Search Theresa Kilmer Provancher she is her daughter and my mother. Search Julius Kilmer and you will find some documents. Please talk with my daughter, she is a gentle soul as I am.

Good morning I just read what you researched and you did find my grandmother. Praise God. I hoped when I wrote to you, that you would find her. Her mother was Saraphine Barto, someone put Sarah P. That is not correct. Yes I can't tell you how much this means to my children and I. We needed to know, where the people are. They don't even know we are out here. It is good to have family. I went to Lake George this weekend and I attended a Pow Wow At Whitehall NY. For the first time in my life I felt free and at home. It just is in my blood. Again, anything you can find will help me find them and correct the wrong. See, my grandmother didn't get to see her brothers and sisters to much because of the Kilmer Family. My grandmother knew I was the one and she put morals and how to fight the spiritual battle that this family has. I am the one the Kilmer's hid me. No One really know about me just you and the people that are contacting me. I have to be very careful of where I walk. I have been worned by my Uncles and Aunts.Spiritual danger awaits and I was their answer. I was trained very well. Grandma spent alot of time with me. I walked across the street every morning when they made me leave her. She moved to where I was to continue to help me accept complete strangers. MY mother and sisters. So, maybe you hearing alittle of my heart will make you understand I was made to fight spiritually not physically. I am a mighty warrior. I just have to find you and then I can help. I am here and yes they are my grandparents. I miss her so much.

Charlotte....I just did a brief search on Ancestry.com under the name "Charlotte Barto" and found one piece of info that very well may be a lead for you to check out. It was on the "Public Member Trees." It is particularly interesting that this tree is listed as having "Indian Roots." I have cut and pasted the info below.

If you have an Ancestry.com membership, you can access more detailed information. If you do not, you can get a free subscription for two weeks and if you want it to go longer they have different payment plans.

You will note that her father is listed as Charles Henry Barto and her mother as Sarah E. Barto. If this is your grandmother's family, I do have more information on that line. Does that match any of your knowledge of her parents?

Here is what I found:

"Indian roots"
Public Member Tree
1 attached record, 1 source
Preview
Name: Charlotte D Barto
Birth: dd mm 1891 - Connecticut

1 attached record, 1 source
There's more to see
All the people in this Family Tree
and things like:
Birth Place & Date Marriage Place & Date
Death Place & Date Parents
Children Brothers & Sisters
Stories Photos
Residences
Sign Up Now
Charlotte D Barto
Birth: dd mm 1891 - Connecticut

F: Charles Henry Barto

M: Sarah E Barto

Charlotte....I did check my database using both the Kilmer and Barto last names and nothing came up. I would need the names of her parents or siblings in order to make some headway. Do you know her birth or death dates and locations? Have you performed census searches using the census records on Ancestry.com? This may reveal her parents and sibling names. Perhaps if you did get this information or do these searches it would give you a lead that I could then trace in my own database. Sorry I cannot be of more help! God bless you too!
Yes, my father Joesph Provancher Provencher, worked as a roofer when he was young there. It is on my birth certificate. Believe me they where my grandparents and lived in Oakville when I started school. I lived right next day the them and Aunt Rita (Provancher)Provencher, Galluo. They use to speak French in front of me and my father would tell her to speak English to me. I loved her very much. So, maybe this information will give you what you need to know who I am. My Step Father Was Armand Provancher. We lived on Eustace St Oakiville CT

Mr Wayne Barto. My name is Charlotte Marion (Kilmer)(Barto)(Provancher) Apicella. I was told you were the one to talk with about this information. I was told by my Uncle that the Barto's are everywhere, even here in Waterbury. Let me explain something and than you may understand. My grandmother was Lottie (Charlotte) Barto Kilmer. Check your information. You may have to check both names. My grandmother's grave says Charlotte Barto Kilmer. There may be a mixup somewhere. I am sure you are family. Maybe you will understand, I am Half Native American. My grandmother took care of me. We moved between CT and NY. Finally both families the Kilmer's and Provanchers bought land in Oakville and we all lived together on one dead end street. It was a nice childhood, but everyone has moved or died. I am my grandmother's pride, she put special things within me. I truly hope you search her more to see if you truly are my grandmother's relative. It would mean so much to me. I don't know why the Kilmer's and the Barto's seperated and I really don't think that is necessary now. For most of the orginals are now gone. God Bless you and your whole family. It was nice of you to respond to me. Names change as the tree goes on because of mistakes. I am still able to correct my knowledge of this tree.
PLEASE SEARCH FURTHER TO SEE.

My father changed our spelling of our name when he built our home. If you could help me with my Grandmother's family I would be so thankful. I am search for family. I know there is a Provencher Highway in Canada. I was wondering if any where still there. Thank you and God Bless You.

I honestly would love to help you; however, it is not within my memory that any of the persons you've mentioned would have lines to my grandmother, who hailed from Clymer, Pennsylvania. She was a BARTO but I've not researched beyond her parents names (and that was on a very narrow thread - furnished to me by Wayne Barto, a highly knowledgeable person where the Barto family is concerned). You should try to contact Wayne...he's savvy and very anxious to share his data base with anyone...I have found. Good luck, and if you do find we converge in the tree you are forming up, do not hesitate to inform me.

I am hoping to flesh out and verify this information with some source data - if I recall, the info that Wayne had on my Bartos was from given to him by somebody else.

Barto family of Picture Rocks, Montoursville & Williamsport, PA

Hi Barto researchers:

Does anyone have any information on John Barto (b. 14 Aug 1826 - d. 17 Feb 1892) of Picture Rocks,PA? He married Katherine Conrad (b 1 May 1827 - d. 17 Feb 1899)and they had at least 10 children: William C. (married Alice Dewalt) Herrold, Eliza A, Horatio Nelson, Mary Ann, Rebecca (married Joseph Snyder), Ruffina, Thomas H, Harvey, and my Great-grandfather, Edward Perry Bardo (b. 1867, married Minnie Catherine Shafer). Several died young; two are buried with their parents in Montoursville Cemetery but I can't find the rest. There are a few John Barto's of relatively the same age in the same area and I've been unable to sort them out. I know very little about John Barto other than what I've written above and that he was a blacksmith and a farmer. Any information about this family would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Unfortunately, the dates don't line up quite right for your Eliza to be my Eliza, who was born around 1851. I have not been able to find anything regarding John Barto's parents, partly because of the many public records destroyed by floods in Williamsport. I am fairly certain that Catherine's parents were John Conrad (b. 1802) and his wife Elizabeth (b. 1805); they are found living next door to John and Catherine "Bartoe" in Muncy Creek Township in the 1860 census. Also living nearby is the Dewald family, into which William C Barto will marry; John Conrad will pass away in the Dewald house. John & Catherine are buried in the Montoursville Cemetery, along with Thomas H Barto and Horatio Nelson Barto. There are several empty graves in the plot, though I know there were other family deaths while they lived there. I will have to look at Sand Hill Cemetery re your tip. Montoursville is such a small place that I'm sure there must be a connection here somewhere. Wish I could be of more help.

You and your husband are included in a GEDCOM I have that was compiled by the late Stella MAUGERI Blackwell, who I corresponded with a lot.

My connection to you is distant. Your 4th ggf, Enoch Blackwell, was the step father of my gggm, Ann CLINCH Campbell. I also have a number of Tomb cousins. In any case, I try to include all of Enoch's descendants in my database (as you probably know, there are many Gamble-Blackwell-Callahan-Tomb interconnections)and I have visited the Blackwell-Clinch-Lugg "stomping grounds" in Gloucestershire.

Currently I am doing my family tree and have it some road blocks.
I come from the Provancher/Kilmer lineage.
I have traced from Joseph O my grandfather who was married to my grandmother Theresa (Teresa in Canada) Kilmer, to his father Julius (Julies in Canada) who was married to Lottie Kilmer (which her real name was Charlotte).
Julius's father was Wilfred Provancher (Provencher over in Canada) which married Edith Champagne.
I am at a stand point there. I have saw some research that states his father might of been Charles E Provancher and his wife Margaret. I have not confirmed that.
The other block I have is that I am looking to find out who Edith's parents were and cannot find anything on her.
I was wondering if there was anyone out there that might be able to help me out.

He is a talent where concerns this prolific family and just may be able to enlighten you in ways you'd never suspect. Wayne has helped me sort out much of my own family tree and I have yet to run across the names you have mentioned (mainly due to the fact I've not gone much beyond my own grandmother whose father was James Barto of Clymer, PA.). And Wayne is a person who shares and shares and he is available within the framework of these message boards. Give him a try and tell him that Verus Langham said hello.

Barto is a name not unfamiliar to me as his name figures into my father's lineage. I do not know that this man you have profiled fits into the tree I am concerned with; however, I am interested to see whatever light you may shed upon the man... perhaps he is indeed in some way connected to the branch of my grandmother's family and anything at all you have would then be of vital interest in my continuing search.
I would very much like to help you discover and find your kindred person of interest; however, it is not within my knowledge there would be any relationship with my grandfather, Norman Barto Langham who was married to Jennie Barto...who died in her home state of Pennsylvania about 1948. Grandma's maiden name was Nancy Jane Barto but many times was known as Jennie.........but as far as I am aware all of her father's kin hailed from Pennsylvania and never migrated south or west. There is a fella who may respond to your data search sometime in the future.... he answers to the nickname Bart (he is a Barto and has researched the varied branches of this family tree and is highly savvy of all its nuances....name is Wayne Barto, I believe.). Good luck on your search and should you discover that we have some familial ties, please let me know vis a vis this page...and thanks for your inquiry.

Wayne has helped me considerably in the past and would be most apt to have some valuable clues on this. Suggest you post to the Barto Family Board... just key in "Barto" and you should arrive there; once on that board just repost your first query and put attention to Wayne.

Verus Langham (part Barto)

That is quite true, the data file "passed on" to him by some fantastic benefactor has been of immense utility for my searches... doesn't matter to me at all where he got it... the fact is he GOT IT RIGHT THE FIRST TIME, and I was totally lost BEFORE WAYNE... you see my BARTO's came from Clymer and not Beaver County... Wayne even cited old newspaper articles from the Ancestry archives which placed my GGparents there in Clymer and identified the correct Jennie Langham (formerly Barto).. and eliminated the OTHER Jennie Langham entirely from my ques queries connects and all other sorts of dilemmas. I sincerely hope you discover all you may find... be certain to check that other wonderful feature Ancestry has, "Who Else is Researching this Name"..there is a wealth of information and connections I never thought possible to be gleaned from that data bank.
Eliza Bardo is my Great-Great Grandmother. She was born in 1832 and died in 1903. She married William Hall in 1854. They had eight children - Harriet, George, Katherine, Cora (my great grandmother), Charles, Alice, Frank and Lottie. Most are buried in Sandhill Cemetery in Montoursville. Do you have any knowledge of John's or Katherine's parents?

Well, since my good friend Verus has called me out, I will reply! I did take a look at my records when your post first came out, but I did not find anything or any connections. In order to help to see about possible connections, I would need some additional information on parentage, siblings, etc. Sorry, my records start to "thin out" considerably around 1900 so older generational info would be the most helpful. Good luck with your search! Here are a couple links to check out:

http://www.geocities.com/bartofamilyalbum/

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/bartofamily/

Unfortunately, the author and administrator of this website and message forum no longer seems to keep them active. I have tried to contact her directly, but did not receive a response. It has been awhile, so perhaps you or someone else would have some luck.

Let me do a little more research over the next few days before I send you anything. I was mistaken about the individual you requested the info about. He is actually the grandson of the Henry Disbrow Barto that migrated from Rupert, VT to pioneer the Trumansburg, NY area in the early 1800s. He is therefore the third generation named "Henry Disbrow Barto" as his father also was of this name.

I found an interesting link with regard to the Masonic connection. Apparently his grandfather, Henry Disbrow Barto from Vermont, was one of the original founders of the Masonic lodge in Trumansburg in the early 1800s. This occurred at at time when the Masons were under great persecution in Upstate NY and this was noted in this article. They subsequently went "underground" and met very secretly in one another's homes. I cannot find the link now, otherwise I would share it with you! Perhaps you will have some luck with Google.

I just recently stumbled upon an interesting article in a news archive concerning what I believe is the Isaac Newton Barto of this particular line. I thought that some of you following this thread might find it a very interesting tidbit of history. You can find the news article at this link:

http://www.loc.gov/chroniclingamerica/ndnp:2026926/display.h...

Wayne

I sent a message to your personal e-mail after I saw your post and looked in my files for related information. The message I sent you contains a PDF file which, in turn, contains a descendency chart for John Barteau (born about 1777) of Nova Scotia and also a pedigree chart for John Cleveland Barto (born about 1885). Unfortunately, I cannot answer your question about connections to any Barteauxs in Annapolis and King Counties. However, perhaps the info I sent you be of some help.

I can probably supply you with a substantial amount of detail about this person's ancestors. How much would you like? If you give me an e-mail address, I will send you at least one background file and perhaps more than one.

As a sidenote, his father was also named Henry Disbrow Barto and was a very prominent businessman and one of the early settlers and founders of the Trumansburg, NY area. He was a lawyer, judge and I believe if I remember correctly founded a bank in Trumansburg. There is quite a bit of info on his father available through on-line searching.
