I saw my grandfather's name on an ancestry.com family tree. The Bartolo Family Tree. I can not access the tree because I am not a paid member. His name is John Peter Sim, born in 1905, died May 1974, married to Julia Ballweg. He lived in New York. One of his sister's is Mary "Mae" Sim Martin. She lived in New Jersey after she married Tom Martin. Is he on your Bartolo Family Tree too? Then we must be related. He is on my Sim Family Tree.

My grandfather's Emanuel Bartolo(meotti) and his brother can't think of his name right now, came to the US sometime in the late 1800's, maybe in the 1880s. From Trento. They arrive by ship ,I think in Baltimore,Maryland. My grandfather's brother settled in the Pa. coalfields, Maybe Mt.Carmel,Pa.They shorten their name to Bartol, while my grandfather kept the Bartolo name. Emanuel Bartolo married Susan Wiggens, in Barbourville,Ky. Knox County. Their childrens names were Leo, Isabella,Fred, Domminick,Paula &Anna. I found a note book which belonged to my late Aunt Anna, and there was names and address's of Bartol living in Pa. Hazelton was one place, I remember. Lois Bartolo Rice. trl820@yahoo.com

Re: Bartolo Surname

Hi Kristina,
Do you have any information regarding grandparents' names and when they came to US and from where?
My grandfather, Joseph (Giuseppe) Intrabartolo, was born in Petralia Sottana, a small town in Sicily in September of either 1893 or 1895. He came to the US in November of 1910 with his mother Michelina. His father Mariano had died in Sicily and his brothers and sisters were already settled in the US. The siblings I know of are named: Anthony, Leonard, Cucciatina (I have no idea how that translates to English) and Joanne.
The whole family settled in Newark, NJ. At some point the last name was spelled "Entrabartolo" rather than "Intrabartolo." We've theorized that this happened at Ellis Island or when filing some other official documents - "I" in Italian is pronounced "e" and if my grandfather was asked to spell his last name out loud it may have gotten inadvertantly changed. He continued to use this new spelling with the "E" for much of his life but it was always known in the family to really be with an "I." The same thing happened with many of his relatives - some go by Intrabartolo, some by Entrabartolo and others shortened it altogether to Bartolo.
I hope this information is helpful to you. Do you think we might be related? If you can get the names of your grandparents, great-grandparents, etc. we may be able to find a connection.
Looking forward to hearing from you.

Dear Suzanne,
Thank you again for your e-mail. This correspondence is making me log on for my e-mail more regularly, at the end of my working day; it makes a welcome break from the routine of work, interesting though this may be.
I shall list my replies as some of the info does not need any description (SURNAMES in CAPITALS) :
Father:- Edward Michael BORG-BARTOLO born on the 29th September 1926 in Sliema Malta
Uncles (Father's Brothers):- Joseph, John, Victor, Alex all BORG-BARTOLO
Aunts (Father's Sisters):-Lina (now deceased) FRENDO, Marguerite (Maggie) FRENDO , May CACHIA, Dolores (Dora) GALEA , Therese (Tessie) BUSUTTIL N.B. Lina and Maggie married cousins hence FRENDO for both of them
Grandfather :- Paul BORG (?family from Zebbug Malta) Grandmother :- Hilda BARTOLO (?family from Valletta/Sliema Malta)
Apologise have not got dates of birth of Grandparents. Got previous details of family origins wrong in the previous e-mail.
Have some details of Grandmother's (BARTOLO) family, but not with me at this time. BARTOLO family lived in Valletta and owned some property there. I am told by my father that there are some flats called BARTOLO FLATS, previously owned by my Grandmother's family.
Hope this info is interesting. Will give you further details when I write next time. I will try to get some more information from my brother in Malta (I only have one brother and one sister) who researched the two surnames BORG and BARTOLO in the archives in Malta which go back as far as the year 1600 approx!!
Best Wishes
Peter

Dear Suzanne,
Thank you for your e-mail. I thought that I should answer it in short format immediately and maybe get back to you with greater detail later. I have since had a fairly full conversation with my father. I am afraid to say that I got some of the facts wrong. I thought that Charles Bartolo went to California -- at least that was my impression -- but my father says that there were 4 Bartolo brothers who went to Chicago/Detroit, Charles himself ending up retiring in Miami, Florida. His three children have lived there since and my father only saw one of his cousins, son of Charles Bartolo, in the last two or three weeks, when this cousin was visiting Malta to visit family. This may disappoint you in that it does not seem to support any of your information, though it may be a fairly detailed and ready source of information on the Bartolo surname that might help you piece things together. My father's opinion was that the Bartolo ancestry that might have resulted in your line, was probably from GOZO ( Malta's sister island). as many Gozitans did travel to California at the time mentioned and that the Bartolo surname is quite strong in GOZO.
If you feel that you would like whatever info I have please let me know, and I will try to e-mail whatever details of the family tree I have to date.
This is proving to be an exciting and interesting time of discovery for me. I hope you feel the same.
With Best Wishes,
Peter

Hello Peter, Thankyou for your reply. It sounds very promising! As far as we know Charles had at least one brother maybe two one named Joseph and at least three sisters named Stella, Paula and Elizabeth known as Queenie. all of the girls emigrated to England in the 1930's approximately. Their parents were Vincent/Victor or similar Bartolo and Anna Marita Bartolo nee Coreski, We are not 100% sure on the spellings, we understand that they lived in either Sliema or Valetta. Victor?Vincent? was possibly a custom & excise officer or similar and died at sea carrying out his duties, Queenie (my husbands mother) the youngest in the family, was sent to a convent in Italy (we think) after the death of both parents. When the other two sisters were old enough they took her to England with them.
Regards Suzanne.

Suzanne,
Thank you for your e-mail. The only Bartolo I know of in California was a Charles Bartolo who is now deceased. He must have been born in or around 1900 in Malta and emigrated to America quite early on in life as work in Malta was not abundant. I was not aware that he had any other relatives in America, though he did have his own family, I think, in San Francisco. Charles Bartolo was my paternal grandmother's brother, i.e. he was my great-uncle on my father's side. My father's mother (grandmother) was from a village called Zebbug in Malta and married my grandfather Paul (Paolo) Borg from a town called Sliema. Although my grandparents never assumed the conjoint surname (Borg-Bartolo) their children, including my father, 4 uncles and 5 aunts did so--hence the Borg-Bartolo surname in Malta. Since being born in Malta myself 1st October 1956 (now 45 years old), I left Malta in 1977 to study medicine in England and have been working here since as a GP (Family Physician). I also have other first cousins with a more direct link on my mother's side (surname BAJADA) living in San Francisco. As the family is so widespread, I felt I should try to throw as wide a net as possible to track down ancestry, family tree and progeny.
Thank you for contacting me. I look forward to hearing from you whether the information I gave you fits in with any information you have. It is conceivable that there were two or more Bartolos that emigrated from Malta to California at or around the same time. Please let me know. The information you have sent me is very exciting.
Best Wishes.
Peter.
P.S. My routine for answering e-mails is not very good. I apologise for the delay in replying

Last recorded as Bartolo in my family tree, when my paternal grandmother married my paternal grandfather in approx 1920 in MALTA, Mediterranean. Bartolo may be Sicilian in origin or maybe Spanish, both possible.
