I have a Robert Samuel Sheppard Bartram, who married Sarah Esther Sheen in London in early 1840s. Both born in 1825. He was always known as Sam. They had a son Robert John, who was my G.Grandfather. They almost certainly had other children I am not aware of. Any help? The most famous Sam Bartram played football for England in the 1940s - but I don't know your time scale.
Geoff

Hello Sue. Interested in your names, but cannot directly connect yet. My ancestors were Richard Bartram who married Hannah Bircham on 7/10/1793 in St Peter Mancroft Church in Norwich. They had a son Abraham Bircham Bartram who is my multiple great grandfather. So far I cannot get back past Richard and Hannah - altho I think she remarried around 1798 which I guess means Richard died quite early.

The origins of the name are actually Jutish or Viking and come from Bheor Tram or "Bright Raven" the sacred bird of Odin. it is still around in Northern Germany. The Norman invasion brought at least one with them, but remember they were Norsemen not really French. There was an influx of Jutes many years before 1066.Always interested to hear what you have to say.
Geoff Bartram

My family were around Uttoxeter (which is in Staffordshire, next to Derbyshire) at the end of the 19th century. My Great Great Grandfather, David Bartram, was married there in 1878. He had several children: Charles (my Great Grandfather), Richard, Elizabeth, William, George, Annie, Harriet, Edith, Emilly, David, Frank and Tom. The family later moved to Smalley in Derbyshire. My Great Great Great Grandfather, William Bartram, moved to Staffordshire during the 1846 Irish Potato Famine from the Bass family estate in Ireland. The family weren't Irish but from Northumberland. It would be great if we could find a link.
Hi - I have only heard of the Bartram Branches book. My husband, James Carter, is connected through Joseph Bartram b 1850 in Boyd county, Kentucky and his wife Mary A. Meyers/Myers? Bartram. Their son George Harrison Bartram, born 14 Oct 1881 in Boyd county, Kentucky, is my husband's great-grandfather, biologically speaking. George Harrison Bartram, married 1) Bessie Ann Hobbs on the 5 Aug 1902 in Cabell county, WV, and had a daughter, Alvena Inez Bartram on 4 May 1904. The marriage was annuled on 7 March 1905 in Mason county, WV. This is my husband's line.

George Harrison Bartram later married Sophia May Smith on 11 March 1911 in Cattletsberg, Boyd county, Kentucky and had 4 children, of which one is still living.

If you would like contact information with George & Sophia's family, I can let them know and have them get in touch with you. At one time, a descendant in California was very much into keeping track of the Bartram family.

Good luck with the update

I believe the correct last name of Eunice is Sturdevant. The Bartrams lived in Fairfield, Franklin County VT as did the Sturdevants. Although much of the Bartram information I have is not documented, I show Jonathan born 07-27-1799 in Weybridge, Addison County VT, son of Joel and Martha LNU. I show that Jonathan married Eunice Sturdevant. Three brothers (Joel, John, and David) all born in Redding, Fairfield County CT sons of David Bartram and Phoebe Morehouse relocated to Vermont and then to the midwest. I am descended from Joel's brother John.

There were three brothers (John, Joel and David), sons of David & Phoebe Morehouse, born in Redding, Fairfield County CT in the 1760's.

I show the children of this Joel to be [1] Jonathan, born 1799; [2] Sally, born 1802; and [3] David, born 1804. They were all born in Weybridge, Addison County VT; and I found them all in the Vital Records of Weybridge VT 1760-1884.

I show Jabez Burr Bartram as the son of David and Mary Burr; however, I don't have a source for this.

I am descended from the brother John and his 1st wife (unknown), through his son, Joseph Homer and his wife, Orilla Hull; their daughter, Elizabeth who married Byron Hill, on down.

I have been to Northern Vermont several times and this family has been a real challenge to trace. I have found the burial site of some of the Bartrams in Fairfield, but very few of them. On my trip north this summer, I plan to stop again at the DAR Library in Washington and want to see what I can find there.

If I find any more information to share, I will share.

N. You have answered some questions for me, and even if you are making some speculations at least I have something now to move forward with.

Thanks for the information on Jonathan and Eunice's marriage date, I didn't have that.

I would like to delve into more Civil War records now that I know what they contain however, it is very expensive. I will have to plan that one out.

Meanwhile, if I find anything of importance I will pass it along.

Robert, I did have someone in Roseburg, Oregon take pictures of Daniel P. and Maud Bartram's burial location. The pictures were posted on Findagrave. Neither one has a headstone. Will the military put one up for Daniel for his service in the Civil War? Where does Daniel fit into the family line?
Hi Nancy. I recently received Edwin Bartrams Civil War records. His father is listed as Jonathan Bartram and mother, Eunice Sturdevant.

I have these children listed for David Bartram and Phoebe Morehouse; Hulda b. 1759, John 1774, Joel 1799, David 1805, Jonathan 1806, Hope, Phebe, Matilda, Lucy, all with unknown birthdates. I have that David and Phoebe both died abt. 1806.There seems to be quite a gap btw. Hulda and John and John and Joel. Also, maybe my Jonathan is not Joel's son, but Joel's brother?

Found this info online:
The Sturdevants and Bartrams lived next door to each other in 1820 census records Addison Weybridge Virginia.
John Strudevant, Abner Sturdevant, Festus/Justus Sturdevant
FamilySearch™ International Genealogical Index v5.0 North America
Family Group Record

Speculation:
Perhaps Eunice Sturdevant
Perhaps born Aug 28, 1804
Perhaps Addison Weybridge Vermont

Search Results | Download
Husband
SAMUEL STURDEVANT Pedigree
Birth:
Christening:
Marriage:
Death:
Burial:
Wife
PETHETA Pedigree
Birth:
Christening:
Marriage:
Death:
Burial:
Children
1.

Hello Bartram researchers:
As all of the Vermont Bartram researchers know, it is quite frustrating at best. Paper trails seem to be scarce or non existant. My line follows David/Phebe, John/unk Sturdevant?, Willis/Mandana, Daniel/Almira Sturdevant, etc.
That being said, gathering as much information about the three sons of David/Phebe, (Joel, David, John), may start to fill in some of the gaps. I will not ignore Jonathan (4th son), as his line is well documented. This is the information I have, some speculation, some with documentation. Jonathan remained in CT. John removed to VT and died sometime in 1833. Joel and David removed first to VT and then to NY. Having talked with a researcher from NY, she said that Ontario Co., was a major migration site to the Midwest. As we all know, the Bartram's removed to Michigan and Illinois.
David b. 1735, d. bef. 1800 Fairfield Co. CT. Phebe b. 1744, d. 31 Jul 1806, Brookfield, Fairfield Co., CT. (Son Jonathan living in Brookfield at that time).
Joel b. 1766-1770, d. aft. 1840 NY. (Married a Martha Unknown). 18 Oct 1799 - Joel signs a petition for the removal of dams at Vergennes Falls, VT. Children of Joel/Martha: Jonathan b. 27 Jul 1799, d. 27 Aug 1850 in Springfield,Sangamon Co.,Illinois. Sally b. 11 Feb 1802,
David b. 14 Jun 1804, d. 26 Apr 1894 in Springfield,Ill.
Joel's residence: 1800-Weybridge,VT. 1810-Fairfield,VT.
1820-Weybridge, VT. 1830-Phelps,Ontario Co.,NY. 1840-Phelps,NY. Jonathan (Son of Joel/Martha) residence: 1830 -
Phelps,NY. 1845-Palmyra Twp.,Lenawee Co., MI. 1850-Springfield,Ill. Children of Jonathan/Eunice: Edwin b.1822,VT. Ezra b.1823,VT. Both served in the Civil War.
David (Son of Joel/Martha)married first Mary Unknown. Children: Wells b. 1832 VT.,d.12 Oct 1863 Beardstown, KY from Civil War wounds. Ward b.Apr 1837 VT.,d.2 Jan 1925, Springfield, Ill.
David b.7 Feb 1768, d.aft.1840 NY. Residence: 1800-Fairfield,VT. 1810-Fairfield,VT. 1820-Phelps,Ontario Co.,NY
1830-Phelps,NY. 1840-Manchester,Ontario Co.,NY. Marrried a possible Burr. Children: (1)Jabez Burr Bartram b. 1797 VT. Son of Jabez - David Burr Bartram b.1823 NY. d. 23 Jun 1864, Nashville, TN. Civil War wounds. Married a Miranda Beard(Baird). I belive someone is following this line.
(2)Pitts C. Bartram b.1810 VT. d. 1865-1870,Shelby, Orleans Co.,NY. Married 1st. Lydia Lusk Mason. Children: Willis M. b.1838 NY. d. 15 Jan 1855, NY. William Henry b. 1839 NY., d.26 Jan 1889, NY. Married 2nd- Sarah Emeline LNU. Children:
Carroll Southerland Bartram (Male) b.Nov 1852 NY. d. 11 Apr 1920 Lincoln, Washington Co., Minnesota. Carroll was an editor for a newspaper in Minneapolis for many years.
I believe I have become quite wordy. As stated earlier some information is speculation and some documented. I have tried to piece together the three brothers in hopes of finding information on John of Vermont. Maybe as the puzzle comes together someone will find the missing links. Hope some of this information helps. I am sure it will raise many questions. This is how I have pieced the puzzle together so far. Stirring the pot is what I am after, proving me wrong is even better. It only helps to fill in the gaps.

Robert

Researching Jabez Burr Bartram born 1797 VT, moved to New York, had son David Burr Bartram who married Miranda Baird daughter of Isaac Baird and Olive Southwood. Moved to MI 1854. Jabez was in MI with David and Miranda, before they moved to LaSalle County IL. He possibly died in MI. Does anyone know who Jabez parents were ? I think there could be a connection to the Connecticut Bartram' but can't find how/ where.
There was a Sarah Bartram who died March 1850 in Williamson Wayne county New York age 55 born Virginia. Was she the wife of Jabez? Does anyone know her maiden name ?
Can anyone help ?
Stuck in New York with the Bartram line.
Thanks

Patti,
Just looked at a few more posts on this site, Joel can't be the father of Jabez, if Joel was born in 1799. Jabez was born in 1797.
Unless there is another Joel.

Hi Patti,
Thanks for posting back right away.
We have corresponded before about these illusive Bartrams.
Do you have any hard evidence putting Jabez with Joel Bartram ?
I have never found anything that gives his parents. Anita Siewiert has a post on Rootsweb.com
putting Jabez with David Bartram, and his grandparents as David Bartram and Phebe Morehouse of Connecticut.
I need to contact Anita and see if she has proof of her posting. I have always thought he must connect to Connecticut, but could never find the missing link.
In Jabez family he did name his son David Burr, and then David Burr named his son David Burr. But that isn't proof that Jabez father was named David.
After 25 years of research, it would make my day to finally put him with a family.
Thanks again.
Hello Anita,
Thanks for response concerning Jabez Burr Bartram.
I first found your posting on Rootsweb, but hadn't gotten time to send you an e-mail.
I understand there is no source for Jabez being the son of David, but wonder if you have some source for Pitts and Jabez being brothers ?
I tried to e-mail you directly, but was not able to send the message. Could not using the address on Ancestry or the one on Rootsweb.
Will you e-mail be directly so I can respond, then I will have the right address. Looking forward to knowing what information you have on this Bartram line, or at least your thoughts on how they fit together.
Thanks
Marilyn
grammac5@comcast.net
Thanks Nancy,
All of this makes perfect sense to me, since there were so many Bartram' in New York at the same time Jabez was there.
It is just making the right connection. I have always felt that somehow he fit into the Connecticut branch.
If you don't mind would you e-mail me directly so we can continue this conversation.
I don't belong to Ancestry, therefore have to post instead of sending you a message directly.
Thanks
Marilyn C.
grammac5@comcast.net
