I am not aware of these names in my Bartz line. My Bartz' came to the U.S. around 1860, quite a few years before yours. I wounld not be surprised if there were not older children left in the Germany that may have married and later came to the U.S. My g-g-g-grandparents were well into their 50's by the time they arrived. I know of at least one daughter that was already married before they made the trip.

Let me know what you find out about her parents' names.

Karen

I am a descendant of Wilhelmine Bartz who arrived in this country in 1875 and settled in the White County, Indiana, area. At the time of her immigration, she was married to Gottlieb Gess and they later moved to Berrien County, Michigan. She was my great grandmother. She was the daughter of Christoph Bartz and Christine Lehmann. They came from the area of Chodziez, Poland, but were German.

There is always a chance that we can connect the dots on the Bartz family.

My direct family line (grt-grandmom) came to Chicago in 1911 from Galicia (now Ukraine).
Here's a twist: the ship manifest listed the last name as "Butzy".
They met relatives who were already in Chicago ("Karol Butzy", as per the manifest).
By 1926, when my grandmother married, the last name was "Bartz".
Not sure when, how or why the name changed.

As far as my grt-grandfather, I'm told he was born in Italy but died and is buried in Galicia (probably Skole, the last known residence before the rest of the family came to America).

My grandmother died in early 1990's so that source is gone.
I do have some documentation about her sisters and brother.
Most lived in the Chicago area, save for the brother, whom I understand moved to Wisconsin.

Any connection?

There are a lot of BARZ and BARTZ in the WI, MN, IL, IA area, and probably more in ND, SD, and MI. Among our ancestors, both spellings were used. Do you know the names of Minnie's parents ? Our line had several siblings that came in early 1880s from Pomerania Poland/Prussia. They settled in Joliet, Will Co. IL, which is just a little southwest of Chicago. Our family was also Lutheran, but that was a common protestant faith at that time among Germans.

If you know to which church they belonged, presumably Lutheran, there may be ledgers available where you can see births, deaths, marriages etc. I was very fortunate to locate these and for a small fee, received many xerox copies of pages in those ledgers. There may be godparents and witnesses listed, who may be possible family members.

If you can connect your line with Joliet IL or even Chicago, please get back to me. I have info on ancestry and you should be able to find it by putting in "Tricia M." and mostly "BARZ". Also, Robert/Bob U. is a cousin. He probably has more info on our line listed in these message boards. He is searching for info in Europe. Our Grt-grandfathers were brothers.

Fall City is in Eau Claire County, WI. I found alot of Bartz records there at St. John's Lutheran Church and St. James Trinity Church. Their site lists church records on-line. Our Bartz-Moldenhauer relatives lived there, then moved to MN and SD before settling finally in AB, Canada where I was born. I now live in WA state, but most of our family still lives in AB Canada. Thanks for this info - I think it will help greatly with my research. You can e-mail me directly at lynnsteck@hotmail.com

obit - Marylou BARTZ Burns, 1929 Ca. - 2006 Ca.

(not related - for board info only)

Burns, Marylou (Bartz)

BURNS-Marylou (Bartz) Burns, passed away July 8, 2006 at home in Pasadena, CA. She was born November 26, 1929 to Rupert and Mary Bartz in Palms (Culver City), CA. Growing up in Los Angeles, she attended USC on a work scholarship, graduating in 1952. It was at USC where Marylou met architecture student Jim Burns. Jim and Marylou married on June 10, 1955 and enjoyed the experience of living in Japan in 1956-57. Settling in the Hastings Ranch area of Pasadena, they raised their children, Patty (Burns) Bennett and Peter Burns. Marylou was a devoted stay-at-home mom for Patty and Peter affording them the riches of always having a parent to come home to as well as providing various after school activity opportunities. Patty is married to Eric Bennett. Peter is married to Tami (Stewart) Burns. Marylou is survived by her devoted husband Jim, her two children and five grandchildren, Jason Bennett, and David, Jennifer, Jonathan and Elizabeth Burns. Her activities included the Women's Architectural League, PTA, being a charter member of the Gamble House docents, Wandering Foot Quilt guild, Tuesday Stitchers, and for many years, a member of Faith Lutheran Church in Pasadena, CA. Marylou followed her beloved USC Trojan football team through thick and thin. Jim and Marylou loved their many travels and especially their world cruise in 2001. Her faith in her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ sustained her and gave her eternal assurance. One of her greatest gifts was to raise her family in the Christian faith and live as a wonderful Christian example to us all. Marylou thanks Jim, her dear husband of 51 years, plus relatives and friends for the devoted care and support they gave her for over 2 years in her battle with cancer. Her loving family will miss her greatly but look forward to being reunited with her in heaven.
Published in the Pasadena Star-News on 7/12/2006.

I am looking for any information on Charles Bartz, born around 5/27/1885 in the Chicago area. He may have had brothers named John and Bernard and a sister named Bertha "Lin" and J.W. O'Connor, all of whom lived in the Chicago area. Charles Bartz moved to the Bancroft/ Buena Vista, WI area in the mid 1900s before marrying Maggie Koplinski in 1911. They lived in Stevens Point, WI until his death in 1944. Also, he may have had some relation to Anna Bartz-Wallner, who lived in the Bancroft area as a child. I believe his parents immigrated to the country in the mid-1800s but unfortunately, I have not been able to obtain any records of his birth. If you have any additional information, please respond.

can someone help me find my grandpa W.J. Bartz?

I am trying to locate ANY information on my maternal grandfather, William Joseph Bartz b. nov. 1921 d. july 1966 in Kalamazoo, Michigan. I believe he was adopted, he was raised by a woman named Emily Bartz who died in Sarasota, FL in 1943. I have his SSN, but it comes up as never issued/no such number in the SSDI. I would really like to find this information for my mother. She only met her father one time. He is buried at Arlington National Cemetery. I have found different documents listing at least three different birth places. He served during WWII in Alaska with the US Navy. My mother remembers someone saying (long, long ago) that his name might really have been Buchanan. Any ideas? Thanks!
