Its ok I will be going to Manitoba Genealogy Society in Winnipeg, they have a library of books I want to look at. I may need to purchase the book from Mossey River Muncipality. There is supposed to be some dictionaries of ukranian settlers Yours and mine(relatives) may just be listed in that book. I was just looking up Steven Basaraba and came up with: http://search.ancestry.com/iexec?htx=View&r=an&dbid=...
It spells Basyraba and 29 20 1 in mossey river municipaltiy
I have joined a group in yahoo groups
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/GaliciaPoland-Ukraine
there is a Gary in the group who has done a genealogy search pay for service and came up with info on his Basaraba family

I scanned all the pages into my computer, but am having trouble getting them to attach to this. Do you have a fax number or address I can send them to? My husband is Ron Basaraba, father John and grandparents Stephen and Annie, who came to Canada in 1899. Am having trouble accessing any records back to Austria, etc. To my knowledge at this time, we are not related to Dymetro and Annes's family, but who knows.
Sharon Basaraba
shayron@mymts.net
204-548-2240 Gilbert Plains, MB

There is an article in the Mossey River history book about Dymetro and Anne Basaraba. They had four sons, Mike, Steve, Bill and John. They came to Canada in 1910. If you need more info contact me at shayron@mymts.net

Sorry this took so very long, I haven't visited this site in ages!
Yes, the surname Basarab and all it's derivatives seem tot be from Vlad Tsepes; the kingdom of Bessarabia was in the region of Wallachia (Moldova/Romania). He is a folk hero there, as he saved the people from the tyranny of the catholic church and the turks!
I am trying to get the link back myself - and seem to have hit a block at a great grandfather - I guess we're distantly related in some small way!
:))

William and Annie Basaraba - Manitoba

Annie Wyrboweski was born in 1898 Gilbert Plains, Manitoba, and married William(???) Basaraba,(Sifton MAN) ... Their kids were Johnny (b.1919), Anne, Frank, and perhaps Helen.
There was a migration to Kamloops BC at some point in the late 20's or so, but I'm not sure if the father (William)was still alive. It appears he was a war vet, but supposition only; maybe he died in the war? Or after?Any help with this geneology would be greatly appreciated. I am interested in the preceding generation, and when the families originally moved to Canada.

Do you still have that message?

Hi Heather,
Thanks again for all your help. The friend I am helping is named Amy. She was born in Surrey Hospital in Feb. 1967.
She was adopted shortly after. She has tried in the past to research her history but the records were sealed. She has no ill will, I assure you. More a desire to know her nationality, any health concerns, etc. Although there is always hope of a positive outcome, as we know that isn't always possible. It does seem that "Bev" might be the person she has been seeking, although Bev may not wish to be found. Amy naturally wonders about the circumstances of her birth and from what you have said, it sounds as if it was a well kept secret, for whatever the reason. Amy's intent is not to bring difficulty to anyone, but rather to have some personal history, some resolution and have some of her blanks filled in.
Since you know your sister and she seems like the best lifeline at the present, your advice in this is welcome. I don't know how much your sister is willing to tell you, but of course any information is important to Amy. And it does seem as if you two are relations of some sort, as well!

Thank you again and we will wait to hear more from you,
Terri

Hi, again!
My name is Heather Basaraba ( daughter of John and Erma Basaraba), b.t.w.!
I ran the story by my older sister, as it was an amazing coincidence, re; dates and times of births.

To be honest, I thought maybe my family had been withholding another dramatic story, as it almost seemed definite that this would be a child from our family, as there were no other Basaraba's in Surrey during the time you speak of. (I hope that clears up one or two points?).
My sister informed me that during the time, we had a young woman, Bev Basaraba, come and stay with us, for the sole purpose of having her baby.
From what I can garner from the info my sister provided, her father was Peter Basaraba, and for whatever reason, she was sent to us from Alberta, to have her baby, and then go home.
As I was 2 years old at the time, I can't offer any other insight. However, I do recall hearing her name mentioned in some past conversations,... but that is the extent of my involvement.

I would love to tell you if we were cousins, or some such details, but I can't. i didn't have that kind of family! lol
Plus, I came along when Mom and Dad were almost 50; lots of the family stories had been shared by that time, and I'm afraid I missed out.
If you have other questions, I can contact my sister; she is not too interested in getting involved elsewise.

Thank you so much for this information. I am not sure I understand it, so if you can clarify, that would be great. Was Bev Basaraba a relation to your family? Why was she sent to live with your sister? Is there anything at all more your sister can tell me about Bev? I wonder if this is my friend's birth mother? I would be so grateful for any further information...anything at all is more than we have now.

My great grandmother (Katarzyna or Katyryna) came to Canada in 1909 with her daughter (Nastasia "Nellie" Huska) and son-in-law (Piotr Jaciuk). At the time she was a widow for the second time. Her first husband was a Mr Huska; they had two children: Nellie and Bill. Her second husband was a Mr. Jaciuk; they had no children. Her second husband was also the father of her son-in-law. When she was about 68 yrs she married a Mr Basaraba, about 1930's. Mr Basaraba was a lawyer (so I am told). He died about 1 yr after they were married. I am looking for any information on these people. Thanks.

Ok, I will send you the information that I know. I will gather more for you as I can.
Wasyls children that I am familiar with:

Stephen (born a twin, twin died of pneumonia at an early age)Steve married (I am unsure of wife's name). He had two daughters, Cathy and Vicki.Stephen emigrated to the US

Olga, married to Paul Pratchen. Children of this lifetime marriage, Victoria (Smith) and Ronald. Victoria's children are myself (Lisa) and Ronald Lee Smith. Ronald Pratchen had 3 children, one adopted son, Andrew James and natural born children Paul Mark and Marianne. Olga and family emigrated to the US in 1952. Lisa had 3 children. Andrew James had 2 children, Paul Mark had 7 children and Marianne had 3 children.

Mathilda-Two daughters, Sandy and Donna (all Canadian residents)

There were actually a total of 19 children. One son disappeared in his late teens and was never heard of again. One son died in his teens of some illness, and then the twin boy that died quite young. That leaves a total of 16 living to adulthood. Wasyl and Tekla eventually had 15 grandchildren. I don't know how long it will take to come up with additional information, but I will send it as family replies to my emails.
