They didn't deliberately change their name, it was an evolutionary change: Spanish Basques/Vasquez to Bascus, Bask, Basco. Blame the French and English. In one census, they are listed as Tubasco.

One and same pronounciation. If your ancestor was naturalized citizen or had social security numbers than you can request those forms which do have a place of birth. If not naturalized but lived pass 1940 then there is an Alien Registration Form.
Larissa,

I found a post of yours from a few years ago where you mentioned that you could trace the Basco line back to the 1600's. Ambroise and Marie Dervan are as far back as I can go. I would love to have anything that you would be willing to share about the family. I have a great-great aunt that married a Basco (and other distant marriages too) and I am very interested in the family's history. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated.
Thanks and keep in touch!

Brittaney Kerry

Thank you so much! I have a hint as to when they Naturalized.. but I'm not sure where (either in PA or NJ as they were in PA in 1910 and NJ in 1920 and the census says they naturalized in 1913 or 1918). No social security numbers that I can find.

I will figure out how to hunt those down. Do you think that my great grandmother's forms would have them on it? She had 2 sisters who also naturalized over here, so I might luck in with one of them, it not her. Did those who naturalized with their husbands fill that information out?

Thank you so much!
-andrea

p.s. http://www.flickr.com/photos/batchoalbum I have some old photos from PA and Hungary and I'm on Hungary-General board trying to figure out the medals and anything about the photo from Hungary.

Bacso great-grandfather

Hi. My great grandfather was Janos Bacso. He came over, around 1884, changed his name to John Batcho, and settled in Windber, PA, married Zsofia Bado, had kids, and then moved to Manville, NJ.

He was born in Hungary in 1875, married approx 1898, and died in 1949 in Manville. His children are: Andrew William Batcho, Alexander L. Batcho, Joseph Batcho, Nicholas A. Batcho, Margaret Batcho Tasnady, Steven Batcho, John (J.?) Batcho, and a Lizzie Batcho (b.1910 we think she might not have made it to 1920).

We don't know much beyond that (Ellis Island has his ship's manifest as 'missing'). Perhaps his brothers came over and are Bacho's?

thanks,
-andrea
andrea (at) andreabatcho.com

Re: Basco "Baschko" Hungarians.

Some corrections to that post:

I said I thought Joseph and Michael were the oldest based on order of death. I might be wrong because I noticed Joseph's possible birth date I have makes him younger than John who died first. And second I said Joseph had the last name Baschko in the paragraph at the bottom. I made a typo and wrote Joseph instead of John. There are just too many Josephs and John Bascos to go around in all the types of Basco families I have found.

Basco's unraveled.

Okay here is what I know and have found out about all different families of Bascos out there.

First I descend from Hungarians Michael and Sophie Baschko who had loads of kids and settled in the Cleveland area and I think only 2 sons changed their last names to Basco. Peter Basco and Joseph Basco.

There are two Joseph Bascos from two different families that people have been doing research on. There is a Joseph J. Basco that is one of the brother's I just mentioned above. Then there is a Joseph D. Basco who is from a different family (They possibly could have been related, they could have been some kind of distant relatives or even cousins. I don't know this and haven't found anything linking the two.) and the posts say he and his family settled in Pennsylvania and I think they said they also moved on to Ohio. I have confirmed through records that there were 2 Joseph Bascos. Like I said a Joseph J and a Joseph D. Both of these guys who are unrelated for now supposedly came from Hungary/Austro-Hungarian Empire.

Now where it gets even more fun. There are loads of Bascos out there from Spanish Portuguese and Southern France most descend from the Basque Region in Europe and I have noticed a lot live in Lousiana and west of the Mississippi. From what I have read their name Basco came from Basquez obviously from people from the Basque region.

Also you might notice there are also Filipino Bascos out there as well. They obviously inherited their last name from the Spanish because they did control the Island for some time.

I was way wrong. I finally found some records.

Hungarians who settled in Cleveland area of Ohio.

Parents: Michael and Sophie Baschko

Children:
Michael
Joseph Baschko
John Basco
Peter Basco
Mary Braut
Anne Hintz or Anna Hintz
Sophie Zoffian
Vera Scott
Betty Sopata

It looks like only 2 brothers changed Baschko to Basco and I have found no records of Basko. So I assume whoever told me it might have been changed to Basko was wrong.

We are not African American but heard that there might be some in the family. The Basco family that we are decended from lived and some still do around Gorum/ Flatwoods area which is just a little north of Alexandria. We live in Colorado now but lived in Otis, also outside of Alex, for three years. I met my husband in Ca and we lived there most of our married life. Anyway, I think it would be really cool if we did have African Americans in the family so I hope we can work together to find the connection.

The lady who replied to this is my aunt. Hi aunt Debbie. I talked to my grandmother. Joseph Basco's father was John Basco. His mother, who's name may be false, was Mary Elizabeth Nicholas. The family came over somewhere between (My estimate) 1900-1915 Joseph was the oldest. He had a couple brothers including a John and a sister named. John and Mary fleed from the Austria-Hungry area do to political reasons and as stated was believed to be a extremely high rank in the military. He could speak seven languages. All pictures of Mary were burned to prevent future reprecusions to the family. But the family has a picture of John. We also have a picture of Joseph and two of his brothers around 1941-45

Bryan-I'm a Basko, of Austrian-Hungarian descent, however, not related to the Ohio Basko's as far as we know. My great grandfather, John Basko came to us in 1888, first to PA, then moved onto Wisconsin. He had his wife, Elizabeth and 3 children with him. Family members speculate the name was changed from something else after they came to the US, which confuses things. They came from Salgotarjan, Austria (which is now Hungary, and also confuses things). Their town in Austria was a big mining town; my grandfather was a miner there, and was a miner here (in the US). I do not know if my great grandfather had any sib's, but he may have. My great grandfather Basko is as far back as we can go. I don't have his b-day with me right now, but I know he was born in the 1850's. My father (who is 89) knew him, but said he didn't talk very much (I figure he probably didn't speak English very well). So that's my Basko story. I am trying to find out if my gg Basko had sibs, and if so, who were they?

My great grandfather was John Basko (1853-1948), who came to the US in 1888, from Salgotarjan, Austria (now Hungary); he was married to Elizabeth Korischar Basko. I do not know anything more about my great grandfather--if he had any siblings, if he changed the spelling of the name, etc. (which we suspect someone did along the lines). Any info would be helpful.

Azaillie Basco who married Sifferan Coutee is the younger sister of my husband's great-grandfather Jesse Basco. If you think this is the same person I have her family history back to 1739. She and her husband are buried in the Gorum cemetery and the info I have is that she was born 7/13/1893 and married 9/18/1914 and died on 7/6/1970 this is probably from the tombstone. Please either post a reply or email me at Sn2bavet@aol.com
If I have already given you this please forgive me I forget who all I have talked to
Hilary

BASCO FAMILY IN LOUISIANA

HILARY, I was being curious and tapped into these files. My grandmother was Azelea Basco Coutee and was born in Gorum,LA. My mother, Ollie Coutee whom passed in 1987, was researching with a cousin of mine. They went back as far as the late 1600's. They found that our family immagrated here from northern Spain/southern France. My cousin has the files and sure that I could get a copy. This might be of help to you as we know that this group of Basco's tie in together at some point. If you think this might be of help, email me at LMCOBURN@AOL.COM.

Basco Family

I have been researching my husband's family the Basco family. I believe you could be related to him. His Grandmother is Agnes (Basco)Hensen and lives in Chopin La.She has given me a lot of info but seems to not want to talk of some things. She had a sister named Patricia but says she died at 1 month of age. She named my Husband's mother Patricia also. If you have info please respond to this and I will get it. Also I have back to 1739 to Ambrosio Basquez(the family changed the name in early 1800's)
Thanks
Hilary
