If you are still puzzled by the Bascom branches, I may be able to help you. Eliza Bascom Backensto was a sister to my great, great grandfather, Schuyler Stone Bascom. Schuyler and Eliza had 4 other siblings and their father was Gaius Bascom. Gaius was born in MA, then was in VT, moving to IN where he died in 1822. Please contact me and I'll be able to get you headed in the right direction.

My mother's maiden name is Bascom. Her grandfather, Harold Bascom, came to the US from the Bahamas.(Unsure of the date but my grandfather - his son was born in NY in 1923) He married a Gladys Pennington also from the Bahamas. Anyone that has any information regarding either of these families it would be great to hear from you. I am trying to put some information together for my mom and unfortunately my granfather passed away in 1979 - so not much info from there.

I can be reached via e-mail at ladyjenya@gmail.com.

Thank you

With the awarness of Bascom as a French name Eugene fits as well. He was born in 1852.
Bascom(b) origins

Dear Marsha,

I found on the Ancestry.co. message board that in 200o you were enquiring about the origin of the Bascomb name. Were you succesful?

It seems that in the early 15th century a man called Gilburtus left the town of Tartas in the south of France, the French Basque country, and migrated to the extreme north of France. His family was not the only one to do this. The family of another man, Jacques Calwel, did the same.Maybe others too. I suspect they were involved in some religious difficulties, which was common in that area at the time. The Calwel family later emigrated to Scotland and are now know as Caldwell. Apparently Gilburtus was referred to as the 'Basque Man', or in French, Le Bask'homme - hence the orgin of the Bascom name.

Perhaps you have found this out already.

Gilbertus Bascom (b. 1382, Mondort, France) - married Jehanne De Mons (b. 1386, Montfort, France)
their son Guillaume Bascom (1410-1490) married Marie De La Croix
their son Guillaume Bascom (1443-1511) married Adelaide De Chabanne
their son Jean Bascom (1470-1562) married Suzanne Barbey
their son Robert Bascom (1499-) married Marie Dornant
their son Jean Bascom (-1617) married Margaret Barber - they had at least six children
their second son John of Fordington Bascom (1570-1625) married Jane Beaumont. They had five children.
their second son (third child) Thomas Bascom emigrated to America.

My interest in the Bascom family history is because I am descended through my grandfather, Frederick William Bascomb, from Jean Bascon and Margaret Barber, grandparents of Thomas Bascom, who emigrated to the USA and from whom the American Bascom(b)s are descended, and of William Bascom from whom my family is descended.

Frederick Bascomb and my grandmother, Maud Smith, lived together for many years but were never married. Frederick's family seem to have been instrumental in breaking up the relationship (he was already married to someone else) and in the unpleasantness associated with this my grandmother changed her name, and her son's (my father) to Baker. As 'Mrs' Baker she was able to achieve a level of respectability (this was in the 1920s) and to distance herself from the Bascomb scandal! My father said he was about 14 years old when he last saw his father, which was very difficult for him.

It is interesting to know that there are so many Bascombs (of various spellings) in the USA. There are also a number in UK. The relationships must be very distant!

If you trace the ancestory back, beyond Robert Bascom who came to England from France in the early 1500s, you can find an amazing and fascinating landscape of European history, going right back to the early Vikings - people alive at the time Jesus Christ was a young man. I was intrigued to discover that Antoine de Chabannes, father of Adelaid de Chabanne who married Guillaume Bascom in 1469, fought with Joan of Arc. Antoine's wife, Marguerite of Naunteuil was Count of Dammartin in her own right, and descended from William I of England (William the Conqueror) - whose ancestory can be traced back to Njorth the Wealthy who died in 20 AD.

Following another line through Guillaume's wife you come to King Alfred the Great of England (b. 849) and many other distinguished folk. A third line includes French and German nobility, including King Robert I of France and the Haspengau dynasty.

Following the Bascom name takes us back only as far as Gilbertus Bask'omme, born in 1382 in Montfort in the south of France. But, of course, we are as much descended from our mothers as from our fathers, and there may yet be more interesting lines of ancestory to be discovered!

Below I have pasted-in a document showing the lines of ancestory I have mentioned above, which I hope you will find interesting and useful. I was able to get the information mostly from www.familysearch.org, but I have cross-checked with other sites and with historical information whenever possible.

I have found out so much in my researches but there hasn't been time to document it properly. I hope one day to write a book about it all and about all these fascinating characters, and if possible to visit the relevant places in Europe. However, that might have to wait for my retirement. As I am 57 now maybe it's not to far away!

With very best wishes,

Philip Baker

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1

Njorth the Wealthy of Vanir b.?
Re: Moses Bascom, b. 1736

I have done quite a bit of research on this family, and am a descendant myself. The interesting thing is all the birth records will indicate Deerfield MA, but one needs to understand that Deerfield in the 1730's was a huge land area that including the present day towns of Greenfield and Gill. The family lived north of the present day Deerfield. I have found and photographed the grave stones of several of this family if anyone is interested. (Moses, Elias, Joseph, Mrs. Ezekiel.) I am searching for the grave of Ezekiel Bascom. Please contact me if anyone has specific information on Ezekiel.

Brad Bascom
Acworth, NH
see the full Thomas Bascom genealogy at www.sover.net/~bbascom

George Bascom b. Oct 8, 1809 in Decatur NY, is included in the genealogy "Thomas Bascom and his Descendants" by E. D. Harris which was printed in 1870. Harris wrote that in 1866 George was living in Alleghany, NY. Harris may have corresponded with the family, as he did with most branches of the Bascom family over the course of a few years before publishing. In any case here are the records below. He listed 2 wives and 8 children. If you have new information I would like to explore it. I collect digital photos of Bascom grave stones, but have not been to NY. I have photos of the graves for Aaron and Samuel in this lineage, among others. --Brad Bascom, NH.

GEORGE BASCOM (JAMES7, AARON6, SAMUEL5, SAMUEL4, THOMAS3, THOMAS2, THOMAS1) was born Oct 08, 1809 in Decauter, NY.
I don't have any Stanleys. My Andrew Bascom Robinson was born in Houston County, TX to Wilson Robinson and Sarah Bynum in 1859. He named a son James Bascom Robinson who was born in Atascosa, TX in 1909. It is an unusual name. Good luck on your search.

I've climbed Bascomb Hill many times on the UW campus. It's a landmark and if you haven't seen it, you ought to. I have memories of it in the 70s at the height of the riots w/ the national guard lined up shoulder to shoulder right up that hill with the bayonets on the guns. Well, that's another story.
I have a very short limb in my tree and it's always been a puzzle. My mother's family goes way back to the 1600s in this country too, and Bascoms are part of the family but I cannot seem to trace it. Here's all I have. Eliza Bascom was my gr gr grandmother who married a Benjamin Morris Backenstoe 25 Oct 1832. Probably in Augusta Co., Va. She was born in VA and died in 1897, Loudon, Fayette Co., Illinois. I've seen her stone in a little graveyard in southern Illinois. You have to wade through water to get to the old grave yard which is on land donated by her husband and herself. They also donated the land for the little church there. Her father was born in NY and his name was James Garnis Bascom. His wife was Martha and also was born in NY. I'm sorry that this is all I have. Obviously for awhile at least James Garnis and Martha Basom must have lived in NY and there is a farm owned by Schuyler Bascom near the Backensto place on the platte map in southern Illinois. I've been perplexed by this one for years. It's about the only "short" branch of the family left. Help?

One of their sons, My great grandfather Alfred was married to Rosa Flanders in 1898. She left him and supposedly died. He remarried someone named Della and had more children. I would like to know any info on Alfred that you might have from churches records. Thank you.

Re: Origin of Bascom name?

Found your thread this morning and am a Bascombe by birth. My understanding of the origin of our name is as follows: GILBERT 1375 was from the Basque region of France and moved for whatever reason north and became known as L'Homme de Basque or the man from Basque. L'Homme de Basque was easily turned around by the English as Basque Homme and then simply to Bascom. Sometimes with a b and then with a b and an e.

Hope this has been of help.

If anyone out there has any research on the parents of THOMAS BASCOMBE 1786-1849 I would be so pleased to hear from you. I can trace the family from him forward to my Dad but not backward at this time.
