I’ve just made a very significant discovery for this early Bashaw family. The parents of the first William Bashaw’s wife, Sarah Garrett, are Thomas Garrett (well documented) and Sarah Knight (this report).
Sarah Knight( - 1701) is the widow of Thomas Kingwell ( - 1665). Thomas and Sarah Knight Kingwell apparently immigrate to Northumberland Co., Va. about 1662, and he dies just three years later. Thomas and Sarah Kingwell have two young children, Thomas and Helen. Young Thomas Kingwell is placed in the care of John Essex of Northumberland, in a form of apprenticeship. Helen’s fate is not yet known.
Thomas Garrett is made administrator of the Kingwell estate and marries widow Sarah Knight (Kingwell) by November, 1655. Her maiden name is given by her signature in the document of apprenticeship.
Kingwell - Essex assignment: (“Northumberland County Virginia Apprenticeships 1650 - 1750", W. Preston Haynie, 1993; p 5. - “20 November 1655 - Know all men that I Sarah Kingwell doe freely bestow my Sonne Thomas Kingwell unto John Essex or his heirs untill he be 21 years of age in consideration of his bringing up This 15th day of September 1655, ye mark of Sarah Knight, Test James Hawley, Jno Bardon, Novemb 1655 this writing was recorded.”
Thomas Garrett becomes administrator of Thomas Kingwell’s estate Nov. 20, 1655, having marrying Kingwell’s widow Sarah: (“Virginia Colonial Abstracts”, Beverley Fleet, Vol I, 1988; p. 363) “Tho Garratt Admr of Tho Kingwell ‘The Court doth order that Tho Gerratt who marryed the widdow and Relict of Tho Kingwell decd shall have a Comisson of Admr of the Estate of the said Kingwell hee putting in an Inventory and security to the Court for the Same’.”
