i was born in southern ontario in 1957. at that time, everybody with the same last name was related to me in some way. since then, clearly, things could be different, but it was true then.

(as an aside, i have travelled canada and each time in a new city checked the name in phone books... not so common.
i was intrigued when the first "baskett" appeared in my local phone book since i'm not there (cell phone only).)

i have heard varying stories regarding the introduction of the name into canada, most of them too romantic to believe, therefore i would enjoy any information you have to share on this subject.

for example, you could be in "somecity, someprovince, canada" and say, "that's not true! there have been baskett's here for ages!". i don't expect to see this.

my claim: baskett in canada originated civil war time at the now detroit-windsor border.
