BASS-HILL North Carolina>South Carolina>Arkansas

I have been digging for information on the Bass family that came to Arkansas around 1859. There is a William Bass living with a William Hill and family in the 1860 census in Roane, Lafayette County Arkansas. I believe this is the same one found living in Fairfield South Carolina in the 1850 census. Does anyone know of a connection or have information on the William Hill family.

I see they have moved your message from where you posted it...

You may already be aware of this, but at this web site
http://www.ingenweb.net/randolph/

Under the topic Black History, then hit Greenville, there are many photos of the Alexander Cemetery, as well as transcription information. Maybe you can connect to some of the names.

I think you may already have the census information? In 1880 in Randolph county IN, Isaac and Elizabeth Alexander have a granddaughter, Virginia Anderson age 1, as well as there own kids Ednetta 19 In, Andrew 16 IN, Nancy 14 IN, Isaac 11 IN. In the 1870 census their oldest child is another daughter, whose name I can't make out, but seems to end in -etta, age 10. She must have married a Mr Anderson.

I'm not related.

Without some dates, I feel that your John Basse is the son of Nathaniel Bass. John was the third son of thirteen children, ten boys and three girls. He did marry Elizabeth, the daughter of the chief of the Nansemond Indians. There are those who believe that her name was Keziah Elizabeth Tucker but it has not been proven to my satisfaction. She was baptized, most probably with the Anglicised name Elizabeth at her marriage to John Basse.

As to Aaron Bass, without more information; birth, marriage, and or death dates, wife's name, and/or parents names it will be difficult with just the primary name to decipher who he is. I have ten or more Aarons in my data base.

Bert Bass, Monino6@cox.net
I neglected to note below the two additional surnames mentioned in my earlier reply.

Mary L. Bowers married James J. Orcutt, He died in 1864 at Drewry's Bluff, Va. In 1866, she married Tom Bass in Utica, NY. The children from both families seemed to have gotten along fairly well.

I have input the full gamut of surnames that should have been noted earlier, below. rb

1860; Census Place: Whitestown, Oneida, New York; Roll: M653_825; Page: 313

Ephraim BUSS, (BASS rb) age 33, b. England, occ. carpenter
Helen, 38, b. NY
Thos., 18, b. NY
Wm H., 12, b. NY ****
Dalbert, 8, b. NY
Chas., 6, b. NY
A. J., 3, b. NY
------------------------
Buss = Bass (I've seen my grandfather's last name typed as 'Boss' )
------------------------
Ephraim Bass' yob is variously reported, the most common being 1802. I believe he was born on or about 1822, in England. His wife was Helen Homer (born Cooperstown, NY 1822/1824 and died in Adams, MA 1879.) The children were all born in the Utica, NY area (presumably in near-by Whitestown, NY.)
------------------------
I believe that Ephraim, William and Thomas above all served in the 3rd NY Artillery during the Civil War. Eph died in 1893 in Adams, MA, Wm in 1917 in Iowa, and Tom died in the Soldiers' Home in Bath, NY in 1920, after a 14 year stay (1906-1920), following his wife Mary L.(Bowers/Orcutt) Bass's death in 1905. He witnessed the births of three of his grandsons (including my father in 1905) before he left for Bath. He died an estimated 250 miles from family. Perhaps, at this point, his fellow veterans were his family. rb

Sure. I think some of the information further up the tree might be in the wrong order, but here goes. I'm related to Rebecca and Thomas on my father's side.

This information is according to my aunt who got the information from the genealogy in the family bible. My mother and father are Ralph J. West Jr. and Loretta DeTetta. Ralph's father is Ralph J. West Sr and his mother is Dorothy Shute. Dorothy's father is Charles Shute and her mother is Sudie Duke Kirby. Sudie Duke Kirby's father was Albert Henry Kirby. Her mother was Louisa Humphries. Albert Henry Kirby's parents are Albert Mclin Kirby and Eliza Duke. Albert Mclin Kirby's parents are Thomas Kirby and Rebecca Bass.

When I was searching my parents' names a while back, I noticed you had my grandfather, Ralph J. West Sr. in your tree.

I've added more images to the Sermon Book section of the Polemic. There are maps of Basse's Choice. One is thanks to Curtis Bass. Through excellent detective work, he has plotted the exact location of Basse's Choice from the old records.

Another image is the original of this transcription from the W&MQ:

PATENTS GRANTED, ETC., 1626. (1) Warosquoiacke [Warrasquoke] Plantation contayneing downe ward's from Hog [Hogg] Island xiiijteen miles by the River side, in wch are these patents following, vizt.:
John Carter, 100 acres
Christopher Daniel, 100
Adam Dixson, 100
John Berry, 100
Thomas Winter, 100 by Pattent
John Pollington, 600
Thomas Poole, 100
Anthony Barham, (2) 100
Capt. Natha. Basse [York], 300, planted
Giles [Gyles] Jones, 150, planted

I believe the W&MQ transcribed this record incorrectly. Having seen the original, it appears to me that "Capt. Natha. Basse, 300, planted" should actually read, "Capt. Natha. York, 300, planted." I've added my corrections to the above record in square brackets. Nathaniel Basse is not listed. This means he did not receive an additional patent in 1626.

Stephaun Paul

I've added a "Sermon Book" page to the Polemic with original images of John Basse's Sermon Book.

Please note that the totality of my research has been published in my Polemic. I don't have any further information on the descendants of Nathaniel Basse. That has not been the focus of my research, and I don't foresee taking that research on in the near future. There are others better equipped to answer such questions. I have only been interested in clarifying the issues surrounding Nathaniel Basse. It has been my hope to provide others a firm base for their own research into their relationship to this man. I would also hope that a clearing up of the Deposition issue will provide the Nansemonds their legitimate connection to the one and only Nathaniel Basse and smooth the path for their tribal quest for federal recognition.

Stephaun Paul

The last one is for a John Bass who lived in the 1700s, and, to my knowledge, no one has been able to place him in the family. I'm sorry I have no information on your Aaron.

Best of luck,

Stephaun

the Aaron Bass I'm related to was born 1710 in Bertie Precinct, Albermarle County, and died aft 1790 in Dobbs County, NC. He was the son of John Bass (DOB 12/4/1673 Nansemond, Norfolk, VA - DOD 1/19/1732-Bertie Precinct, Albermarle County, NC)Mary Love Harris (DOB 1677-Nansemond, Norfolk, VA - DOD 1/18/1731 Bertie Precinct, Albermarle County, NC). This person's nickname was "Lovey" and she bound her illegitimate child to a neighbor, George Anderson, who was probably the father. see www.freeafricanamericans.com. John Bass's father was William Basse who married Catherine Lanier. Is this the same John Bass in any way?? Or are there 2 Love Harrises.

Re: "NATHANIEL BASSE: A POLEMIC" is back online

I've read read your entire site. Wonderful but I'm confused. Somewhere there is mention at the very end of Aaron Bass. I think he is related somehow but I don't know how. He is one of my direct relatives so I'm not too sure I'm related to Nathaniel Basse. I have a JOhn Basse in my lineage but I have that he married the Nansemond Indian and that can't possibly be correct. If you can shed any light, I'd appreciate it. Thank you.
