Re: decendents of Captain Nathaniel Basse
Generation No. 3

5. JOHN4 BASSE (NATHANIEL3, HUMPHREY2, WILLIAM1) was born September 7, 1616 in Middlesex Parrish, London, England, and died April 2, 1699 in Norfolk, Nansemond, Virginia. He married KEZIAH ELIZABETH TUCKER August 14, 1638 in Nasemond Indian Tribe, Virginia, daughter of ROBIN THE ELDER. She was born 1618 in Nansemond Indian Tribe, Virginia, and died December 4, 1676 in Norfolk, Nansemond, Virginia.

Notes for JOHN BASSE:
John Basse came as an infant with his mother and father to the New World of Virginia. Jamestown was founded in 1607, nine years before John was born. According to genealogist, Alyene Prenn, the story related to her by Justin Bass, at the time Chief of the Nanesemond Tribe, was that John was the only survivor at Basse's Choice of the Good Friday massacre in 1622. John's father, Nathaniel had returned to England as presumably had his mother since she died in England in 1630. John was rescued from the carnage by Nasemond Indians and was taken to raise by them. John married a Nansemond Indian girl with the unusal name, for an Indian, of Keziah Elizabeth Tucker. Keziah's father's name was Robin the Elder. He was the "King", or Chief (Weroance) of the Nansemonds. Keziah took the name Elizabeth at her baptism, a not unusual occurrence at the time.

I the Linda Clement file on Ancestry.com, she cited New World Immigrants, Volume 1, pages 1 & 2, by Tepper, 1980 as quoted in an e-mail from Winette at gnw@rose.net 20 Aug 2002 and posted on the Rootsweb.com Bass list: Nathaniel Basse, age 35, arrived on Basses Choyse in Virginia aboard the ship "Furtherance" in the year 1622. William Barnard, age 21, was also on board." I've also seen ship names Marigolde and Bona Nova associated with Nathaniel Bass and other records that show his arrival in VA much earlier.

http://www.saponitown.com/forum/showthread.php?167-Bass-Fami...
John Alden's daughter married John Bass (1630-1716) on 03 Feb 1657/58. This John Bass is the son of Samuel Bass (1600-1694) and I think the grandson of Humphrey Benjamin Bass (1565-1616) and Mary Carkin (1525-1616).

If this is correct was there a connection between the Jamestown Colony and Plymouth Colony?

Thanks for any help or information you might have.

Debra - Don't know if you'll see this but Bertha Basse was a child of Claus Basse and Helene Kuneke Basse of Weehawken, NJ. Claus was the brother of my gg-grandfather, Barthold Basse who married Catherine Von Dohlen. I have learned over the years THEIR father was also a Barthold Basse and their mother was Marie (Maria) Scheid (also Scheild in some references). If you google "Claus Basse" and "Weehawken" together, you'll get several sites with historic information that was not on the web even a couple of years ago. Maybe that will help you piece together your Bertha's life after childhood. Bertha was my g-grandmother's first cousin.

My grandmother is part of the lineage of Benjamin Bass who died as POW on March 4, 1864 in Rock Island, IL. Her name is Ethel Bass and her father was John F. Bass. She is currently in the hospital with a broke hip, but she can fill in alot of the newest information. I kept researching fathers of all of the children and found that Captain Nathaniel Basse was one of the first ancestors. I also have a very distant cousin, Steve Bass, that said he traced our lineage to a Basse that brought immigrants over. I would love to hear from you. The Bass family is quite large in our small area of Jasper, Hamilton County, FL.

Have you searched the Nathaniel Basse link with Samuel Jordan? Some records indicate that Anne Marie Mary Basse was the daughter of Samuel Jordan who came to Jamestown in 1610 on the Sea Venture. Nathaniel Basse's twin sons were named Samuel and Humphrey. In 1623-24, Samuel Basse living at Basse's Choice would have been the twin who survived the 1622 massacre.

Samuel Basse and Humphrey Basse

From the sources I have searched from all over the internet the accepted idea is that Samuel Basse or Bass of Norfolk, believed brother of Nathaniel of IoW, is son of Humphery. I agree that this makes the most sence because there were not vey many Basses in England and the ones there were came from France orignally. There were no Basses in the US before Nathaniel Basse, and a record in IoW says that Nathaniel at Basse's choice had a Samuel Basse living with him from about 1623-1624. Also the fact most of Samuel's children have many of the same names of Nathaniel's children. So it does not seem reasonabley possible to say they are not related. My question is did Nathaniel any of his brothers or sisters, children or grandchildren mention any of Samuel Basse's descendants or Samuel Basse himself in their wills, land grants, etc. If so we can prove for sure 100% that Samuel is Humphrey's son because a DNA analysis was done for Nathaniel and his desc. and they all proved positive for being related to Humphery. Any tidbit would be welcomed.

Chris

P.S. also posted on BASS forum
I have much information on the Bass (e) line. Nathaniel Bass (1589 - 1654) is my 10th Great Grandfather. I have some info on the Good Friday Indian Massacre in 1622. I have excepts from John's Sermon Book which related the marriage of Keziah in 1638, and also his various appointments to the House of Burgess 1st Legislative Assembly in 1623-24 and 1631-32. The was a polemic of Nathaniel Bass extending 107 pages long. If interested I can mail a copy to you. (at no cost to you).
I would be very interest in seeing what you have in you files on the line and also would like copies of your lineage, as much as possible. I can send out the same on mine.
I want to also point out that Samuel Bass 1598 - 1694, brother to Nathaniel, is the line associated with Pres. John Adams and John Q. Adams. They are both our cousins from Braintree, MA. I have the ADAMS line back to 1422.

Colby Kingery
San Bernardino, CA
Kingeryhistorian@yahoo.com
Then moved to Franklin County, Ark., Where James is buried in Houston Cemetery, Franklin County, Ark. They had Florence Ethel Holt, who married Ernest Luther Holloway, who had my father-in-law, who had my husband. Where I get lost is who is Ephraim's father. I seem to have lost a generation between Ephraim and his father. The best I can do is finding Jeremiah who was born about 1724.
I also cannot find where Nancy Miranda Bass Holt Martain is buried. We think she passed in Oklahoma, where my husband's grandmother is buried. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.
