Classification: Query
Proof has been found recently from a very reliable source in England, that the parents of Mary Elizabeth/Elizabeth Mary Bassett b. ca. 1634 England, wife of Joseph Foster & sister of William Bassett b. ca. 1630 Newport?, Isle of Wight, England is not the
Mary Roper who married a James Bassett
as that Mary Roper b. 1530's, daughter of Wm. Roper & wife Margaret More, married 1st Stephen Clarke & 2nd ca. 1555 James Bassett, 3rd son of Sir John Bassett of Umberleigh, Co. Devon, only had 2 sons by James Bassett & they were Phillip b. ca. 1556 & Charles b. ca. 1558.
James & Mary (Roper) Bassett had no daughter Mary who could have married Joseph Foster.
The above James Bassett married 1st Mary Clarke & he & his 2nd wife Mary Roper worked at the Court of Queen Mary & King Phillip. Their 1st child was named after King Phillip who gave them a wedding gift & a christening gift when their 1st son was born.
James Bassett made his will on Sept. 6, 1558 when Mary was pregnant with their 2nd child, Charles & it is probable that James did not live to see the birth of Charles as James died on Nov. 21, 1558. Mary died on Mar. 20, 1572 & they only mention Phillip & Charles in their wills.
Charles went to the English College in Rome in 1581 and became a Jesuit & he died in Rheims in 1588.
Little is known of Phillip, but it is thought that he married a Miss Verney, but no proof has been found.
Even if James Bassett & Mary Roper had had a daughter Mary, she would have had to been born before 1558 & our Mary Elizabeth/Elizabeth Mary (Bassett) Foster was born ca. 1634, way too late.
So please take note & do not copy this wrong info. out there on the internet, into your Bassett/Foster lineage.
Thank You
