Following on the Vernon County, Wisconsins aspect, I am looking for info on Charles J Barrett, b abt 1871, and family. I found him in the 1920 US Census in Whitestown Township, Vernon County, WI, as a widower with children Francis C - 22, Florence E - 20, Coral R - 18, Doris - 16, George R - 14, and Helen M - 10. I believe the mother of these children is Anna Brown. I have a Ferrol b 1925 who believes she's also his dtr. I have found a Helen C (last name unknown) as another wife for him who could have been his wife in 1925 but Ferrol believes her mother's name to be Edna. Below is the info I have . Ferrol gave it to me so I assume it's fairly correct.

Descendants of Charles J Bassett

1 Charles J Bassett b: Abt. 1871

. +Anna Brown

...... 2 Florence E Bassett b: Abt. 1900

...... 2 Coral R Bassett b: Abt. 1902

...... 2 Doris June Bassett b: Jun 03, 1903 in Vernon Co, Wisconsin

.......... +John Theron Elliott m: Jan 01, 1926 in Janesville, Rock Co., WI b: Sep 01, 1895 in Richland Twp, Richland Co., WI

...... 2 George Roosevelt Bassett b: Abt. 1906 d: 1977 in Vernon Co, Wisconsin

...... 2 Helen M Bassett b: Abt. 1910

...... 2 Ferrol Bassett b: Sep 16, 1925 in Ontario, WI

.......... +Private

*2nd Wife of Charles J Bassett:

. +Helen C Unk m: Bef. 1930 b: Abt. 1906 d: 1991

The George Roosevelt looks like a version of family tradition as I see you have a George Washington.
Yes, I received a copy of this letter (that you quote in your above reply), written by the widow of John Spencer Bassett, from the Duke University Library archivist.

Richard Bassett (father of Richard Baxter Bassett and Lucy Bassett Daugherty, wife of John Fenton Daughert) is documented in the information on the site below:
http://research.history.org/ewilliamsburg/map.cfm
(click on the map showing "Ewing House."

Mutual Assurance Society records: "In 1860 John F: Daugherty insured the property thus: "…I the underwritten John F. Daugherty residing at Williamsburg in the county of James City do hereby declare for Assurance in the Mutual Assurance Society against Fire …my Building on the south side of Frances Street now occupied by myself situated between the property of David S. Cowles on the West and that of R. H. Graves on the East, in the said City of Williamsburg and in the county of James City …Dwelling A at $1200…2 stories high Walls & Roof - Wood…""

Mrs. Victoria Lee recalling Williamsburg in 1861 had a few remarks about the Sweeney house [formerly Ewing]: "…The present Sweeney House, which stands next to the Roper House, had at that time no porch. A family by the name of Daugherty occupied this house. …"1

There is mention of THE EWING HOUSE
Colonial Lot #604
May 15, 1939

Mrs. Victoria Lee in her recollections, Williamsburg in 1861, states: ...The present Sweeney [Ewing] house which stands next to the Roper house, had at that time no porch. A family by the name of Daughterty occupied this house.
Being situated in James City County, a county of which the great majority of the records were destroyed during the Civil War, no further information regarding this property has been uncovered.]
http://research.history.org/ewilliamsburg/map.cfm
I have not yet figured out if this is true, but the following comes from the papers of John Spencer Bassett, noted historian.

(handwritten at top of page: Gift of Oct 21, 1943 Mrs. Bassett, 58 Pomeroy Terrace, Northampton, Mass.
Typed as original (misspellings included)

John Spencer Bassett

SOON AFTER the war of 1812, in Virginia two young Bassetts, William and Richard, became heirs of their father’s plantation near Williamsburg, called Eltham, and a small property of their mother’s, whose maiden surname was Spencer. They decided to divide and settle up their possessions. Richard left the ancestral home, bought a few slave carpenters, and opened a contracting business in Williamsburg. His son, Richard Baxter, continued his father’s business for a time, but later moved to North Carolina.

Williamsburg, although the home of one of the oldest societies in America, was then and still is, a place where there is the greatest amount of equality. This mingling of the good people of the town made a deep impression on the plantation-born elder Bassett, and the democratic idea waxed greater in his son.

Richard Baxter Bassett in his building career in North Carolina designed, as well as built, many structures of note in his adopted state. And it was while he was building at Tarboro that his second son, John Spencer Bassett, was born, December 19, 1867.

The son has this to say of his father: “My father was unlike anybody else I have ever known. He was as pure-minded as a woman. I never heard him make an improper or profane remark. He was strict in his household, but never unkind.
.....

Jane, if you are still looking for Daugherty information: Lucy Bassett Daugherty's father, Richard Bassett owned one of the 88 remaining original buildings in Williamsburg, VA - listed as the Ewing House and you can find images online on the Colonial Williamsburg web site. This house is located about a block from Bassett Hall. To date, I have found no documents to connect Richard Bassett to Burwell Bassett who owned Bassett Hall and for whom the house is named. I did find that John W. Daugherty (my great-grandfather), son of Lucy Bassett and John Fenton Daugherty was born during the time they lived in the house. Anyone who has any DOCUMENTED evidence of a connection between this Richard Bassett (born: Matthews Co., VA?) and this Burwell Bassett (of Bassett Hall and of Eltham in New Kent County), please post a followup. Thanks! Marilyn

Help Wtih Margaret Bassett born Barnstable, MA 1743

A long distance contact is asking me if I have any information on a "Margaret Bassett" who was born in Barnstable Massachusetts around 1743. That is all the information I have! I don't know if Bassett was her maiden or married name, nor do I know if the date of birth is accurate. Barnstable Massachusetts certainly makes some sense given the number of Bassett's who lived in Massachusetts in the early 18th century.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!!

Newspapers, electoral rolls, limited work records, historical directories, and other resources exist, but without knowing when and where your family lived, and without knowing what resources you've already explored, it's nearly impossible to point you to any other resources.

Perhaps you should take a peek at GENUKI, including the pages for the county in which your ancestors lived. Lots of links to help you there.

Also take a look at Cyndi's List at http://www.cyndislist.com/genuk.htm for many links to resources.

Good luck!

It's not clear what information you're seeking.

If you're looking for immigration information, post your query on the appropriate board under Topics/Immigration and Emigration, and then see the sub-categories under that.

If looking for information about the BASSETT family, try posting on the BASSETT surname board.

If you're seeking more information about Barnardo's,try posting on the Topics / Orphans and orphanages / British Home Children board.

In order for someone to help you, you'll need to post a bit more information. First names, dates and places of events (births, marriages, deaths), a little about what information you already have and what information you seek will be helpful.

Good luck!

I am trying to find out anything about my Bassett family line, I have little information on this line but I am interested to see if there is something that I may be overlooking in my searching.

Besides the census records (I will be checking the 1911 census once I get some money to view the records) plus I have checked the freebmd index, and all the other main things one would think to check. But I cannot find much of anything except maybe that my great grandfather was part of Barnardo's at some point. I have filled out the form to get info there but is there anything I could look at in he meantime that requires little to no funds? Even lists of young people who were hired because of low income? Or an old directory that may list who lived where during the early 1900's?

I've checked many of the normal sites but I would love to check things off the beaten path.

The departure point where my great grandfather left England was Southhampton if that helps.

im talking about other items to search like say newspapers or if there are any work registers or anything, basically about finding out where and how my relatives may have lived or places they may have had to sign up to go to.

Ive done all the basic searches like immigration and all of that (like I said)

Did they vote in the early 1900's? Did people sign up for lists of needing to work? Old directories of where people lived maybe?

That is what I mean. Ive done all the inquiries on the other boards and have found nothing, I am just trying to see if there may be other odd/unusual things or lists people may have found that could be useful.

Hello again!!!! Good to speak to you again. I should have guessed it would be you, it is so unusual to find ANYONE researching London Bassett's.
I should think I haven't moved any further, since the last time we met. Am still stuck on John/Susannah 1780's. Cannot trace where and when he was born. Oh well, it gives me some thing to do with my time, I suppose.
Hope you and the family are all well.
Regards Carol

Hello Jane
Have just read your posting regarding Edward BASSETT and Sarah GOSLING.
They are my great grandparents. They had a son, John, who married Annie Ambrose, who had a son John married to Ellen, who were my parents.
Good to make contact with you, our line of Bassett's, are very illusive.
How are you conected to Edward and Sarah?
Regards
Carol (nee.
