I am hoping to locate a source where I can obtain copies of photos/portraits and other information concerning the family of Henry Bastow who migrated onboard the Ship Roxborough Castle which arrived in Melbourne December 1857.
I am particularly keen to obtain a copy of a photo of his grandson, Charles Percival Bastow, Private in the 46th Battalion AIF who is buried at Amiens (Longueau Military Cemetery.
BASTOW - Newfoundland to Pennsylvania

This is an update to an earlier posting in 2004 for John Albert Bastow.

I now know that John Albert Bastow left Newfoundland perhaps as early as 1891 and died in Pennsylvania before October 1905. He may have moved to the US with his brother-in-law James King and his sister Isabella Helena Bastow, wife of James. James and Isabella were living in Armstrong County in the 1900 census and in Pittsburgh according to the 1910 US census.

Thanks for any help

Hello,

I am Jowett Bastow's great grandson and descend through his son, Jowett Bastow Jr. and his granddaughter, Cleo Bastow. Our family history says that Jowett Sr. made more than one return trip from Ringgold County, Iowa to the UK, and on his final trip, World War I started and he was afraid to return because of German U-boats. He died in England in 1917 and was buried at Morcambe.

Richard Austin Bastow is my great grandfather. I also have a copy of the discharge certificate.

The family story is that he eloped to America with Catherine Broadbent and then served in the American Civil War because he wanted to help abolish slavery. However according to their marriage certificate, they were married on 17 November 1862 in the presence of Catherine's parents William and Mary Broadbent in the parish of St George's, Hulme in the County of Lancaster, England.

To my knowledge, there was no way that the Volunteer Force of Canada took part in the American Civil War. In the discharge certificate, Lincoln refers not to Abraham Lincoln, but to the town of Lincoln, Ontario which is near St Catherines where the certificate was written by Lieut Comdg Parnell.

Their son, Austin Bastow was born in Cleveland, Ohio on 19th October 1867.

Cheers

Maurice Fowler

thank you for replying to my message.

I had a letter some time ago from a Mr Edward Lewarne about his uncle William that left to go to Australia after the first War, but had no other information other then that a Lewarne came over in the RAF in the second War but he had no names. Also I wrote for for some time to his sister Pat Spicer.

I found Eliza on the 1911 cencus, but the children are too young so am having trouble in finding out who they married so any help in that direction would be helpfull. I have also sent off for Davids death certificate as I was told that it is possible that he shot himself.

My Lewarnes are from Croydon, but I have done lots of research on the Bermondsey family too, as I research all references to the name.

I believe we did correspond several years ago when you were researching Eliza Welsford and Eliza Vigurs (wives of David John Lewarne). I have lots more research now if you are interested.

Hi
Looking at my name you may wonder why I am appearing on the Bastow web site. Jowett Bastow was my Mother's Father's Sister and as far as I can tell moved to Ringgold, Iowa in the 1850's. He appears as a farmer in Mount Ayr in the 1860 census. I have managed to find his childrens names and would be very intersted to see how this links together.
Richard Austin Bastow-Volunteer Force of Canada-1867

Today I received a copy of the discharge document of my great great grandfather from the Volunteer Force of Canada No 3 Co. 19th Lincoln Bttn V.Inf

The date was 11th March 1867 and the name was Private Richard Austin Bastow. The document is signed by E.S.Parnall Leit.Camdg.

He married in 1862 in England and his son was born in Cleveland, Ohio in 1867.

I was just wondering where I could find out more? Are there any migration lists that he could be on that would show when he arrived in Canada? Or any other online records about him?

A family legend says that he fought in Lincoln's Army in the Civil War but I have never found his name on any lists for either the Union or the Confederate Armies but today I found out that he was in the Volunteer Force of Canada. Is there any chance that Canadian Battalions fought in the American Civil War?

Thanks in advance.

Regards
Geoffrey
BASTOW -Yorkshire/ Durham England

I would love to speak with anyone researching the BASTOW family history. I am finding it hard to find further information before 1815. I am a decendant of Nathan Haley Bastow (born 1856, West Hartlepool Durham and married Esther MUSTARD) who's parents are Paul BASTOW b approx 1815 Bradford and Jane ?? born approx 1814. Paul's father was Jeremiah Bastow (?Bairstow) and we think his mother is Ruth.

Nathan Haley Bastow b approx 1824 is Paul's brother and the only sibling I know of. Anyone with information who could contact me and share what they have I would really appreciate it. I can be contacted by email on zandraann@bigpond.com.au

Hi, I would love to talk to anyone in this group of postings as hopefully we may be able to help each other. My ancestry includes PAUL BASTOW b approx 1815 Bradford married to Jane ? Paul's parents are Jeremiah (Jerimiah) BASTOW. Paul's bother is John Jeremiah born 1869 and I have good information from then on, particulary around NATHAN HALEY BASTOW. Other surnames include MUSTARD and CAIRNS.
I can be contacted by email zandraann@bigpond.com.au.

Mike, This is a little off topic, but is one of your ancestors Charles S. Muscroft, who served as surgeon to the 10th Ohio Volunteer Infantry during the Civil War. The 10th was an Irish regiment out of Cincinnati, Ohio. If so, I would be interested in speaking with you.
Thanks
Jerry

Hi my name is Stephen hope and I use to live in a place called Boston Spa, near weyherby about 12 miles from York. I was trying to get in touch with a good friend of mine called Micheal Bastow who also was from Boston Spa. I see that you where inquiring about a person from York and wondered if you knew the name Micheal Bastow. It knew Mike from about 1964 - 1977.
Look forward to hearing any news

Born in St. John's Newfoundland in June 15, 1852. Son John Bastow and Jane Henneburry. Purported to have moved to Western Canada, possibly Saskatchewan, before 1913. Probably a farmer and possibly married a second time to a woman from the Ukraine. May have had a limp or a problem from a farm accident.

Looking for any information at this stage.
