Joseph Porter Bateman

Hi. About 3 years ago I purchased an old antique bible off of e-bay to compliment my antique decor. The other day my father gave me my family bible. I was just about to post the old bible I purchased, back on ebay when I realized that this old bible belonged to a Joseph Porter Bateman and wife Mary Jane Benn. This bible was presented to them on their wedding day. Inside the bible (which is very worn and somewhat falling apart), lists the births, deaths and marriages of the Joseph Porter Bateman family. Considering I know the difficulty in tracing my own ancestry, I would like to return the bible to the rightful descendants of Joseph and Mary Jane, rather than post it for sale on ebay. Please respond if you are interested in this very old and worn, but wonderful treasure.

Looking for info on Bateman families of Cecil County, MD or Kent County, DE in early 1800's. A Bateman daughter may have married a Sheppard Barratt around 1800. They lived in the area of Port Deposit, MD in 1810. Sheppard Barrett died in 1814 leaving wife with small children. One son may have been named Bateman Barrett born about 1810.

Bateman origens

Ladies and gentleman,
Please be aware that there are at least two national origens for Bateman. Although I am American, my own line is Irish, although the English line probably has a broader population.
I'm not going to mention names, but it get's confusing when you don't specify origens, as in "old country" or when requesting the coat of arms (there is at least an Irish AND English version, both different). And if mentioning any noble titles, please mention of what, as in Lord Bateman of [whatever], that helps tracking too.
I don't want to sound like all I'm doing is complaining, but maybe this will educate as well. I mean, if there're Irish and English Batemans, there very well could be Scot and Welsh Batemans as well.
Just something to think about.

OHIO, Nelsonville, Athens Co, Hocking Co. OHIO

Hello all,
I would like to add information to my orginal message.
According to the IGI my great great great grandparents were John Bateman and Jane ROBINSON married April 17, 1873.

I'm not sure if this is correct, because I know that my ggggrandparents are Lance BATEMAN and Hannah ROBINSON married April 17, 1873 in Athens Co. OHIO.

Now, they might have changed their names, but I find this hard to believe. Could this be a coincidence? Both Bateman and Robinson married on the same day, in the same county?

I also have the following information about some of the rest of the family...
1910 Miracode Index Ohio, Hocking Co., Logan
Lance L Bateman 34
wife Mayme E 30
Daughters Chrystal S 12, Ruth L 10, Come O. 5

Same index
Scioto Co
Lance Bateman 58
Wife Hannah 59
Son John E. 19
daughter in law Lovina M 18
grandson Elson R b. 1905, eventually married Mona McManaway

Children of Lance and Hannah
Daniel W b 1874 married Effie
Lance b 1875 married Mayme
Jennie b 1879 married Benjamin LANTZ
Edgar b 1883
Florence b 1888
John E. b 1891

Children of Daniel and Effie as I know them
Hugh Bateman b. Sept 12, 1914

Son of Elson Bateman
Charles G. Bateman b July 30, 1920 Athens Co, Ohio
married to Virginia SHAW

Most of this family is buried in the Greenlawn Cemetery, Nelsonville, Ohio.

**Other sources** Obituaries Ohio
Hugh Bateman, Charles G. Bateman.

Would like to know if there is a connection to Parry Bateman, Ronald Bateman, Robert Bateman...

John Bateman married Isabella and then Elizabeth.
John and Isabella had a son named John Bateman the middle name I been given and the one I've seen in census don't match one is Edwin (found in census) one is Edward (given by grand aunt) Info given to me by two Batemans has him dieing in 1908, and he has no kids. Where this came from I have no clue but might be right I was told he died in his 50s. No sources were ever given for this. In 1891 census John E Bateman age 38 is married to a Ann J age 27 they have 2 kids Ann J age 3 and John E age 1. In 1901
John E age 42 is married to Eleanor J age 34 kids Annie J age 13 and John E age 10. The son I have seen been given the name James. There was another daughter May but I believe her to be Eleanors daughter. The son John E (Edwin) is my Great Grandfather he went to England in 1914-15 married my Great Grandmother Margaret Hannah Slater they later came over to the US in 1924 on a boat my G grandfather help build in Barrow in Furness, Lancashire, England. John Edwin was said to have lived with an Aunt Christian Bateman after his step mother died during child birth. Any help would be much appreciated .

BATEMAN/BATTMAN/BATMAN - C15th-C21st Kingswood & Bristol Area (ENG) also S. Wales

Reminder of my Bristol / Kingswood Local One Name Study is available on my website
see http://www.geocities.com/gracefiles
if you have notes to swap

in three parts:
Part 1: The Early Years (C15th - Late C17th):
Roots traced back to William BATMAN, a Husbandman of North Stoke, a village east of Bristol. He left a Will dated 25.3.1586 which suggests he may have been born c1482.
William is my 12xGGF.
[Understandably the relationships in this period are somewhat difficult and unreliable, so any additional insight to those presented would be appreciated.]
Part 2: The Later Years (Late C17th - C20th):
Dozens of confirmed linked lines and hundreds of relatives connected to the researchers listed below. This includes hundreds of other related families for the Bitton/Kingswood area, some of which are also listed in the Genealogical Index.
Part 3: The Risca Clan, Wales:
Emigrant coalminers who moved from Mangotsfield to Risca, Glamorgan now part of Gwent, South Wales. Descendants of Isaac s/o Abraham BATEMAN and Hannah LUCAS who, during his marriage to Sarah BENNETT moved from the Kingswood area to Machen and Risca. Their fifth child was born there in 1810. Several BATEMAN families were living in Bateman's Row in 1861, a street most likely named after the mining family.
Is the Welsh rugby union player Alan BATEMAN a descendant of these families?
Reference listing for other BATEMAN families in Gloucestershire.
Thomas Bateman, wheelwright, fl. 1625 - 1658

Hi! I am doing research on merchants and craftsmen who in 1642 supplied the city of Londonderry in Northern Ireland with ordnance and munitions. Thomas Bateman is listed in records of the London Great Companies as the wright who supplied the gun-carriage wheels wheels for the cannon sent to the City. He appears to have been the father of the first Wardens of the Guild of Wheelwrights.

I would be most grateful for any further information which will be fully acknowledged when the work is published.

Best wishes

Kelleen
__________

Thomas Bateman who lived in Whitechapel, near to the Tower (of London) became the Ordnance wheelwright in 1625, a position he held until 1658 when his son Matthew was appointed. He died shortly after, his will being proved on April 8th, 1659. Thomas possibly was one of the earliest members of the fledgling Company of Wheelwrights that petitioned the City of London for incorporation in 1630. The Wheelwrights were subject to much scrutiny, as were their co-applicants the Coachmakers, on the grounds that some members of both had been involved in the supply of shoddy goods. As a result, there were long delays and then the English Civil Wars supervened. Nevertheless, he supplied wheels and axles for the Ordnance for field and standing carriages and limbers, trucks for naval carriages and general wheelwright services, from earliest days of King Charles, through the Civil Wars and First Dutch war during the commonwealth.

In fact, it was not until 1670 that the Wheelwrights finally achieved Guild status in their own right, the first Master being Matthew Bateman, who took the office again in 1697 (Bennett 1970, 159). Matthew Bateman survived the Restoration and continued as ordnance wheelwright. He also appears to have been in place through the reign of James II and up to and including that of William and Mary. Thus, he would have been in position at the time of the1689 siege.

In 1700, Thomas and John Bateman billed the Board of Ordnance for four pairs of wheels and other accroutrements (War Office 51/60, f721), and Thomas and John are described as ‘captains’ in Ordnance records of 1715 (WO 51/95, f. 76r). John Bateman was Master of the Guild in 1704 (Bennett 1970, 159). Such a concentration of surnames in the affairs of the first years of the Company can hardly be coincidence, and it seems probable that the Thomas Bateman of the 1642 guns was the sire of a line of Bateman wheelwrights. In fact, a Matthew Bateman was still the Ordnance wheelwright in 1760 (WO 51/212, 28r), indicating that the family held the position for over 120 years, at least 4 generations.

Thomas is listed (often in association with the carpenter John Pitt in the early 1650s (Calendar of State Papers Domestic passim) as having received payments both for wheels and whole vehicles. This, in itself is interesting, since John Pitt is on one occasion described as a wheelwright. In fact, it could perhaps be suggested that certainly as late as the 1650s, there was a great deal of overlap in the work of wheelwrights and coachmakers. In addition to wheels, Bateman was evidently involved in the production of whole vehicles, as references references (e.g. Cal. SPD 1650, 572, April 3rd, 1650) to payment for ‘waggons’ and tumbrils (two-wheeled carts which accompanied the troops and carried tools and supplies) suggest. Equally, Pitt produced wheels on occasion. However, unlike Pitt, Matthew Bateman survived the Restoration in post (see below).

I hate to just toss the photo.

Jan

John, I too, would love to have copies of the letters of your g or gg grandmother of Allen & Naomi. A copy of a large family Bible states that Allen McLain married Naomi Bateman "daughter of Isaac Batemand and his wife Anna"
I would like more information on Daniel and Allen's mother Sarah. See so many maiden names given, but no proof.
Also trying to determine who "Ann" Bateman was prior to her marriage to Isaac Bateman.
I descend through Allen and Naomi's oldest son, Parker Bateman McLain (where did the given name of Parker come in?)
Regards,
Brenda McLain

His paper trail vanishes after 1918.

I'd be much obliged for any info.
BATEMAN DNA Surname Project

The BATEMAN DNA Surname Project currently has eight members, and we would like to have many more. You can view the project's Results Chart at:

http://www.worldfamilies.net/surnames/b/bateman/results.html

If you have an interest in this project but have held back because of the testing cost, here is a FREE alternative: the Sorenson Molecular Genealogy Foundation maintains Y-DNA and mtDNA databases, both searchable, and testing is completely free to persons who can provide a pedigree with at least three generations of biological ancestors and with some ancestors born before 1900. Check it out at:

http://www.smgf.org/index.jspx

Please understand that the Sorenson project is different and completely separate from the BATEMAN DNA Surname Project. Sorenson tests for a different mix of Y-DNA markers than does FTDNA for the BATEMAN project. However, there is enough overlap between the Y-DNA markers tested that the markers common to both projects can be used to determine whether a male Bateman who tested with Sorenson has a reasonably close match with a member of the Bateman project. Incidentally, four Bateman lines are currently represented in Sorenson's Y-DNA database, so persons choosing to test with Sorenson will be able to compare directoy with those results.

Be aware that there is a downside to the FREE testing. Sorenson does not report test results directly back to the person being tested. Instead, the person will have to periodically check Sorenson's Y-DNA database to see when his pedigree is posted there and then he can determine his test results. Also, it may take six months to a year or more to learn one's Sorenson test results, as compared to about seven weeks to get test results from the BATEMAN project.

Bill Bateman, Co-Administrator
The BATEMAN DNA Surname Project

Bateman, Ireland, 1600s

I'm hoping someone will recognize some names. I have a very old note about a David Bateman marrying a Deborah Keays in approximately 1677. I believe that Deborah is the daughter of Christopher Keays, who served as high sheriff in Co. Limerick in the 1650s. The information is recorded on old papers we inherited but we do not know where the info came from. I suspect (only suspect) that David Bateman might somehow be connected to the John Bateman who served as high sheriff in Co. Kerry during the same time period that Christopher Keays served in Limerick.

Do any of these names ring any bells with anyone???

Cindy Wood

Bateman - Ryan of Cork, Ire

Trying to find further information on Eliza BATEMAN of Cork, born around 1819-1822. Her sister Mary Ann BATEMAN was visiting her in Surrey during the 1851 census. Mary Ann was then aged 20. (In the census Eliza's age is down as 29 but when she died in England in 1903 it was recorded as 84.)

Eliza BATEMAN was disowned for marrying a police constable, James RYAN, who was also probably Catholic, adding to the family's displeasure! I don't believe she or any of her children were Catholic.

Eliza and James had their first child, Ellen, in Ireland in 1845 but that child died in England 8 years later.

Does anyone know of this Bateman family, or which part of Cork they might have come from? Eliza used to talk of listening to the Atlantic rollers from her home. So I'm trying to find Church of Ireland parishes close to the sea!

Just a thought....

JennyMc
Brisbane, Australia

Hello from Glace Bay Cape Breton Island Nova Scotia Canada. All Capstick families here are related except for two in Glace Bay who originate from Halifax. One of who , Anne Capstick, runs a genealogy site that you can ascess via a yahoo search I am sure.
Our Capstick have benn here since the late 1700's or early 1800's.William Capstick was teh first Capstick that was born here in 1809(m 1839 Elizabeth Strang b1810).
My Grand father John James Capstick 1891- 1960 use to know a Bateman couple, who were a good 10 yrs older then he, here in Glace Bay on our island who were from York area and they use to say that there was a Capstick Bateman relation.
I would like to make that link one day. So we can link our family tree with that over in England.
We were always told we were from Wales but
according to sources Capstick isn't a name from Wales. It may be from Lanchsire area.

Please feel free to contact me if yo wish to say hello.

Kindest Regards;

Paul C
